I daily carry my Springfield Operator 1911 and love it. Probably the only thing I want to do with it is fine tune the grip safety and the extractor. It's a dead-to-rights accurate gun out the box and it runs really reliably.
A decade ago a friend of mine bought a TRP from them. I was very impressed with it, it was 90% as accurate as my Les Baer Premier II SUPER TAC at half the price.
Very useful information without the hype. Thanks. I've been getting AARP membership spam in the mail so, I decided to join club 1911 with a basic A1 Gov't model.
Picked up a Springfield TRP a few years ago. Couldn't afford a Wilson Combat but the TRP isn't what I'd call cheap either. Been using a leather pancake from Urban Carry for a few years now. I do find it reasonably comfortable with little to no printing but at my age let's face it... It is a heavy piece. My backs pretty messed up from years of roofing. Thinking about scaling down but I love the 1911 platform. Especially in a full size model. It's hard to beat a fine tuned 1911. Much appreciated for the video.
I also have the TRP model along with a Series '70 Colt GCNM and the SA RO Compact. I carry the RO Compact when I opt for the 1911 platform mainly because I'm almost 62 and it's just easier to carry. Fits and conceals well in a Jackass rig, and IWB Crossbreed, or an OWB Galco. The TRP occupies space on the nightstand most of the time. The Gold Cup is strictly a bullseye target pistol. If I'm not carrying the RO Compact then I opt for the SA XDS in .45 ACP. Easier to clean, keep clean, and is surprisingly easy to control. The trigger can't compete with a 1911 but it's still better than the Glocks I've shot.
Enjoyed your video. I carry one of two Kimber Govt size in .45 everyday. For me, a leather IWB holster strongside works best. The Kore Essentials gun belt provides the support I need for an all steel 1911 weight gun. The slim size of a 1911 conceals well in any season. I recently bought a new Springfield Armory Mil-Spec in stainless steel as I really wanted a series 70 that I can use as a base gun to modify only slightly as a new carry gun. Living in a 10 round max state, having 8 rounds and one in the chamber with a spare mag on my weakside belt works for me. Thank you for your excellent content.
My Ruger SR 1911 Commander (4.25" barrel) has been flawless. While I think the recommendation for a 5" is spot on, I've been impressed with the 4.25" Ruger, which is slightly easier to carry.
I have multiple firearms and always wanted a 1911 but I didn't want to pay eight hundred dollars for a gun that I will not carry or use it too much. I saw a Tisas 1911 A1 service government for 349.00 and I bought it. That pistol is absolutely 💯 reliable with any 45 rounds even hollow point. I have shot around a thousand rounds with no issues.
I have a couple 1911 and picked the one that never fails to function. My carry 1911 is mid-range brand name and happens to always function. I learned that by shooting the heck out of them. I learned about crap in the pocket and new shirts/coats being in the way of a smooth draw. Not for everyone but I carry hammer down instead of using the safety. In a panic which happens when you are threatened I expect to instinctively thumb a hammer back quicker than fiddle with the safety lever. All of my magazines work from stock '70s era Colt to new Wilson Combat 47s. Then again I am a big fan of standard hardball... the ammo the gun was designed to function with. 45 is a huge bullet and does not need to expand when hitting something.
I would offer that you actually *try* to thumb the hammer back under pressure and at speed - not at your own pace, but on an electronic shot timer. In addition to removing the dangerous practice of lowering the hammer on a loaded chamber, the thumb safety is demonstrably faster and a more repeatable mechanical motion than breaking your grip to thumb a hammer. Ball ammo in any handgun caliber is going to be inferior in terminal ballistics to any JHP round from the last several decades. I appreciate your viewing the channel and hope that you can get yourself out to some training classes and matches to continue to build your skill set and knowledge base.
@@108Performance Much appreciate your quick and thoughtful response. I get what you are saying and would not put forth that my way is better. I do what works for me. Qualified as an expert with the M16 if that puts a date on my experience. I was fairly quick when I was young and probably not bad even now. I like listening to what guys have in mind when they work with their guns and appreciate you thoughts and input.
Your posts on the old Modern Service Weapons site had me first wanting a good 1911-type... Then not. Still nostalgic, but even after a couple 10-8 Performance enhancements, I'm just not that good or that dedicated to mastering the 1911's foibles. As much as I wanted to love it and as easy as it carried back when.... Especially because I'm not a big guy. C'est la vie, I guess.
In a future video, perhaps you can cover drop safety and the Series-70 style action. IIRC, you did some drop safety testing years back, which prompted me to change to titanium firing pins and extra strength firing pin retaining springs.
Did not know about LAS Concealment holsters, especially the availability of an IWB for mounted lights. My current favorite for carrying a full size 1911 IWB is the N8² Tactical holster; by far the most comfortable holster out there in my experience. I've always had the same dislike for ambi safety on CCW 1911's for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. Therefore I find that LAS Concealment holster advantages.
Great overview of the 1911 I carry the RIA .45 with the 4.25 barrel I also have one in 10mm, I agree with everything you said I carry just in a plan Galo leather holster.
Very informative video I learn more and more on my 1911 I have a colt but series 80 but still love it and I have 3 sprinfield questions can you make a video talking your 5 most important modifications to do in a regular 5 inches government 45 to make it a next level or make it more reliable 1911 please will be great and thanks from Los Angeles California
Good vid.. my 2 cents.. I bought a colt mkIV series 80 in Tx in 1989 for $686 ( I will never forget), it was not uncommon to stove pipe (alot). Over the many yrs, there were always better defensive guns to aquire. Once my " preference" goals were attained, I entertained and scratched the vintage itch with the Tisas govt 1911. For $400 let me just say I absolutely love it! I have just over 800 rds thru it without issue, uncleaned or lubed, from factory. To shoot it hallway distance, I will just say I am playing with concealed carry of old slab sides again. I dont think one has to spend big money on a "45" anymore, to get and enjoy a good one. Again, just my 2 cents, good vid brother.
Just picked up my 4.4” girsan mc1911 influencer. Red dot ready tac rail 8+1 45acp. It’s awesome. My first 1911 there’s like no reviews on it cause it’s so new lol
I just bought my first 1911 which was a Springfield Operator 4.25 AOS 45acp. I put some VZ Hydra grips on from the TRP series. I was thinking about changing out the stock recoil system to a DPM system. I'm just not sure if their as reliable on the 1911 platform. I also ordered a few Wilson Combat 8 round magazines and a legacy IWB holster
Good Evening 10-8. I've owned a few 1911's over the years. Colt's, Kimber's, a Remington Rand service issue pistol and now a Couple Springfield Armory pistols. My favorite of those being the Garrison in blued steel. No it's not an edc but it's a good range gun and nightstand firearm. I really enjoyed your thoughtful review and am a new subscriber. I look forward to seeing more from your channel. Take care and be safe.
I’m rocking a Springfield 1911 Loaded 45 5 inch Parkerized. Without a doubt very nice it’s a NM prefix serial number gun. Made in USA hand fitted and tuned in Springfield Custom Shop. Apparently when slow in the Custom Shop they build some Loaded models all other Loaded models have a foreign stamp and serial number starts with N. Anyway for 749.00 new it’s well worth it.
Hilton, have you ever played with the Sig P-210? As an avid 1911 fan and gunsmith myself, I really like them. I actually use a target verson (210a) as a LE duty gun. It took the place of my .40 1911.
Won a bid online for a Remington R1 and have been very pleased with it. Has an ambi, as I am left handed. Got the sights changed to an XS set - popsicle sight. Don't have a big budget and this is the only .45 I have. I suspect I will never part with it.
My next 1911 will be a Tisas, or a 5.7 oistol if ammo price comes down. The full size 1911 conforms to the body better than the shorter models, from what I've read.
Hello, Really enjoy your videos. I decided to acquire a Springfield TRP based on your detailed performance review. What is your opinion on a Colt Defender in 9mm? Would very much like to see you put it through your performance tests…
Please don't roll your eyes but I see more and more of the 1911s coming out of the Philippines at the range. How about some of your excellent guidance on what seems to be an evolving event?
First time viewer and I'm impressed.. this video was well thought out and great presentation. I liked and subscribed. If you haven't already done a video on 1911's in .45 vs .40 cal. Thank you.
I just read your article in Springfield Armory magazine… great story! Just found your channel… I have a SA TRP 5” full rail… any recommendations on holsters? Looked at the LAS… but they don’t have full rail ones.
Thanks for reading! For my TRP Full Rail I use the LAS Shogun for 5" Staccato or the LAS Saya 2.0 for Staccato 5" with X300U (assuming you're using a light).
I have had super good luck with the Springfield PX9109LP. The parkerized Loaded model. I have had several MC operators and loadeds. To date I have had no malfunctions with any of them. They seem to eat anything I put in them. Dont know if this makes a difference or now but I always make sure the are the NM serial numbers. Maybe, maybe not. Side note, I carry in the t-rex arms side car.
Great video! I checked-out the LAS Concealment Web site to see if they made one of those Shogun holsters for a Kimber Ultra Carry II size "1911" pistol (I really like the idea of something inhibiting accidental release of the safety when carrying in condition 1.) Sadly, it appears that they only offer them for 5" and 4.3" 1911 models. Are you or any of your readers aware of something similar for the smaller sized pistols that they would recommend? I have NOT had good luck trying to find a decent holster on Amazon for any of my pistols!
Wilson Combat government issue 1911 appendix carry, with a red dot ,surefire X300U-B light with side car holster . Any recommendations .Absolutely love the channel
I carry S&W PC1911 bobtail 45, or my DW ECP 45, or sometimes SA EMP Bobtail 9mm, They all have bobtail aluminum frame and are commander size. They all work well. More recoil then government size, thats the trade off. Now Cabot makes the "full cycle" design Gentleman's Carry commander and Wilson Combat has the "Wave Rail" design on the Experior commander that are supposed to make them even more reliable, which are expensive but not sure if aluminum frame.
Still researching my first pistol. My main need is bear defense. I have a small farm and the black bear in our area are getting predatory in their behavior. I’ve always had long guns, but it’s getting such that I think I need a side arm. I’m thinking 10mm, but idk if that’s an entry level round….
10mm is not easy to shoot , and as your first pistol, i dont recommend it. Is like your first car, you want a V8 turbo with 1000 horsepower. also not much pistol are really design for that caliber , those manufacturer like glock, or some 1911 manufacturer just put that caliber in their existing handgun. A magnum revolver is more suitable and shoot-able. If you want a 1911with 6 inch barrel 10mm, your accuracy, recoil, and muzzle flip is going to be out of the window.
@@The_Referee yeah, I figure you’re spot on. Thanks for the feedback! Right now I’m just saving up the money, not just for a gun but all the accessories, ammo and training etc. I figure the first thing I’ll do is hire some time at a range with a trainer to get advice and try lots of different guns before I buy anything. I suspect I’ll need to shoot 1000s of rounds with a 9mm before I can think of solving any problems with a 10mm. In the meantime, I got ahold of two replica BB guns, a Glock17 and Colt 1911, just to work out safety/no-safety, carry options and practice safe handling. Anything else you think I should be looking at?
@@brocknspectre1221 get a trainer for 1 or 2 range session is enough, learn the basic from them, and you can explore on your own. Rent and try out different handguns, hammer and striker fire and see which one fits your hand and which trigger you prefer, like shoes, you need to try them on before buying them. Watch guntuber and practice the stance and grip at home with your BB gun will also help. No need to worry about hitting the x (bullseye) at first, get the feeling of the trigger pull and how the handgun goes BANG. Don't get a small or cheap gun as your first gun, you won't be enjoy shooting it. Good luck and have fun shooting.
@@The_Referee THANK YOU! I appreciate your feedback! While I have been watching tons of gun videos, I hadn’t found guntuber yet. I’ve got some recommendations for a trainer and in the spring there’s a big shooting event at a local range where you pay one fee and try out many different guns just for the cost of ammo. I figure I’ll go and try out everything I can and hopefully make a purchase. I expect to be able to spend $800-1000 on the gun itself and hope to have as much more cash set aside for holster, ammo, lockbox, mounted light (because I’m forever going out to the barn at night to see what’s making all that racket!) and maybe a sight upgrade or red dot, idk. As it is, I’ve been practicing much like you’ve said, working on stance, grip and sight alignment. I think I like the 1911 over the Glock. On these BB guns at least, the 1911 sights seem to come better to my eye (cross dominant 🙄) and I like the grip. Also, because I imagine in the future I will probably be in situations where I’m walking with the weapon drawn and could fall down, I think I want the manual safety. Thanks again and I hope you have a great thanksgiving 🙏
So I'm new to CC.. I just bought one of the Rolls Royce of 1911's... a Nighthawk Councilor with the RMR cc red dot... $5700... I want to get the most comfortable holster possible, and put it in the most comfortable spot.. so as not to be discouraged from bringing it always.. That said, I've tried 3 holsters IWB in Appendix and 3'O Clock... and I find it still obtrusive and slightly uncomfortable.. am I just too sensitive?
Just got an Alchemy Classic Carry in 9mm. It runs like a sewing machine. How much grip safety movement do you recommend for a carry gun before the trigger is disengaged? On the Alchemy you have to press it about 2/3rd of the way. I'm thinking of sensitizing it closer to halfway.

Have a Remington/Rand 1911a1 since 72. Added Hogue grips and modded rear sight. Best piece I've ever owned.
Thanks! Went w/ a LAS and used your code.
My carry rig for the 1911 is a leather 1912 flap holster with leather mag pouch and drop leg strap. Works for me when I'm in the saddle.
Thanks for the video and recommendations. Wilson Combat and Dan Wesson 1911's. Solid EDC's, sir! I've had good luck with my Colt Defender .45 as well.
I just grabbed a few magazine base pads highly recommended them! Check em out and junk the stock plastic ones
Excellent video. I just purchased an OWB Mernickle extreme high ride leather holster and it works really well. Good advice all the way through.
In a future video, perhaps you can cover drop safety and the Series-70 style action. IIRC, you did some drop safety testing years back, which prompted me to change to titanium firing pins and extra strength firing pin retaining springs.
Great information I’ll be looking at the LAS holsters. I like the safety guard.
Great Patriot 10-8 God Bless....🇺🇸✊
How about a carry 1911 maintenance schedule video? What to do and how often
Most people who own a 1911 typical recommend every 500 rounds is when you should breakdown and clean
Even more often when you're carrying it
Great overview of the 1911 I carry the RIA .45 with the 4.25 barrel I also have one in 10mm, I agree with everything you said I carry just in a plan Galo leather holster.
I just bought the Tisas Service 1911 5 inch. I love it . Great shooter. Accurate and very well made.
Great video on the 1911!
Well thought out, executed and informative video. 👍
Great channel and awesome tips. Really like the LAS holster but they do not show it in red?
Would love to hear what you think of P210 C. LOVE MINE!
Not quickest reset but egos and accuracy terrific.
Hilton, have you ever played with the Sig P-210? As an avid 1911 fan and gunsmith myself, I really like them. I actually use a target verson (210a) as a LE duty gun. It took the place of my .40 1911.
that LAS Shogun paired with a Phlster Enigma would be legit! it takes all the weight out of the 1911.
In case anyone was wondering the LAS Shogun also works well for strong side carry....
Won a bid online for a Remington R1 and have been very pleased with it. Has an ambi, as I am left handed. Got the sights changed to an XS set - popsicle sight. Don't have a big budget and this is the only .45 I have. I suspect I will never part with it.
I've gotta get some of those pants.I noticed Dickies has some type of holster pants.Great video
Great recommendations, excellent delivery.
Great stuff as always Hilton
Love my Kimber Custom TLE 2 TFS
My next 1911 will be a Tisas, or a 5.7 oistol if ammo price comes down.
The full size 1911 conforms to the body better than the shorter models, from what I've read.
Hello,
Really enjoy your videos.
Thank you.
I love my Ruger sr1911 lightweight commander I use a pancake holster on my days off.
When at work a p938 in my front pocket..
I use a Vedder IWB with a claw and a Bravo Concealment holster. When I do carry a 1911 it's either a light-weight Commander .
Good content. I like your channel. Does the Springfield operator have any MIM parts in it?
Thanks for the video, good stuff
Great video! I checked-out the LAS Concealment Web site to see if they made one of those Shogun holsters for a Kimber Ultra Carry II size "1911" pistol (I really like the idea of something inhibiting accidental release of the safety when carrying in condition 1.) Sadly, it appears that they only offer them for 5" and 4.3" 1911 models. Are you or any of your readers aware of something similar for the smaller sized pistols that they would recommend? I have NOT had good luck trying to find a decent holster on Amazon for any of my pistols!
tried to conceal a 1911 just does not work, so I just carry a S&W SD40. 1911 is a badass weapon, love it for range gun.
While I agree the 1911 in 45acp is a good choice my Rock Island is a very good and reliable 1911 it was less than 500 dollars
Thanks for the video.
How about some "Only Performance Counts" shirts?
Great info, and great videos, just got a new sub!
Wilson Combat government issue 1911 appendix carry, with a red dot ,surefire X300U-B light with side car holster . Any recommendations .Absolutely love the channel
Sweet video 👍
I have a ronin 10mm love it. Building a hiking rig for it
I carry S&W PC1911 bobtail 45, or my DW ECP 45, or sometimes SA EMP Bobtail 9mm, They all have bobtail aluminum frame and are commander size.
Hilton, have you given thought of a full-size 1911 in .38 Super?
Great video
Anyone who’s looking to get an affordable and quality 1911 check out Rock Island Armory . They make awesome 1911s at a reasonable price .
@@The_Referee Hmm, I saw an alert that you responded, but I can’t find the comment. Maybe it was deleted? Anyway, thanks for your input👍
I know you’re not keen on them but would you do something on 9mm 1911s? Best of, that sort of thing.
I do have reviews of the SA Ronin and Emissary 9mm, pls check them out.
I notice on your VZ grips you run the super scoop, how come as opposed to the regular thumb notch? Is the super scoop actually useful?
Thanks very good. What’s your thoughts on the Vickers 1911 magazines from Willson ? Do you see any reason to buy 7 vs 8 round magazines ? Thanks
How has the LAS treated the finish of your guns?
No different than any other Kydex holster
Hey there. Do you make the grips without the signature inlay on them? I Love the grips, just plain with no inlay...
I would love your opinion on a Colt Delta Elite 10 mm stainless, made 1985 -6?
So I'm new to CC.. I just bought one of the Rolls Royce of 1911's... a Nighthawk Councilor with the RMR cc red dot... $5700... I want to get the most comfortable holster possible, and put it in the most comfortable spot.. so as not to be discouraged from bringing it always.. That said, I've tried 3 holsters IWB in Appendix and 3'O Clock... and I find it still obtrusive and slightly uncomfortable.. am I just too sensitive?
shoulder or owb are the most comfortable ways to carry, never iwb
Have you ever owned a updated infinity 2011 or 1911?
Q: Do you remove the chambered round every day when you come home from work and uncock the pistol?
Just got an Alchemy Classic Carry in 9mm. It runs like a sewing machine. How much grip safety movement do you recommend for a carry gun before the trigger is disengaged? On the Alchemy you have to press it about 2/3rd of the way. I'm thinking of sensitizing it closer to halfway.
Halfway or less
@@108Performance Thanks. I'll shoot for that.
@@rlovell383 You might also want to watch Ep69 from a few weeks back, all about the grip safety.
@@108Performance Thank you I will! I've learned so much from your channel. Keep up the great work. I'd love to take a training class someday.
4 1/4” railed 45 acp is my jam. I mean my favorite flavor of 1911…….fuck.
Just curious on how you feel with the LAS holster a year later. Are you still carring it? Thank You in advance!
I'm looking to buy my 2nd 1911 soon. I'm torn between a trp and a vickers. Any opinions?
I just got my first 1911
Welcome to the club.
So, should I just assume that every out of the box 1911 is just an unreliable range toy until you pay someone to swap out a bunch of the parts and customize it? BTW, what do you think about the Ruger 1911's? 🤔
Thank you
1911 is a solid go-to. Reliable down to dirt and mud. Its the AK-47 Kalashnikov of handguns. In my own opinion, to say the least.
