Waiting for the End is just a masterpiece. Everything about this song is perfect in every way possible, and it's not just Mike Shinoda's favorite LP song but also mine. Hearing it live at the concert in Hamburg for the first time was an emotional rollercoaster.
Listening to Emily sing waiting for the end hearing the emotion in her voice man that got me. Waiting for the end is by far my favorite Linkin Park song
This album has become a fan favorite over the years but a lot of people hated it when it came out lol. Also about the urgency thing... We as a society didn't think nuclear war could be on the horizon back in 2010. I think this album was meant to be retrospective and also to humanize the people who experienced nuclear or chemical warfare. It's asking for forgiveness but the album also serves as a reminder that love and compassion beat hatred. The album addresses negative feelings like anger, frustration and loneliness in a plea for us to let those go or to hold onto hope that things get better. Idk how to describe it but it's like they took that overarching theme of nuclear warfare to tell us to do some introspection. Cause if everybody did that we hopefully won't go down that route again as humanity.
The mark of successful art, in my opinion, is the ability for it to be kairotically reinterpreted based on the time and place of the experience. A Thousand Suns, in its myriad reinterpretations over the years, absolutely succeeds in this regard.
I loved this album when it came out. I was new to the idea of concept albums in general, but this album literally blew my mind. So when I found out recently that it's one of their more underrated albums, I was shook. How could this masterpiece of a band's evolution and maturation be so disliked? I'm glad people are giving it another go because it's so damn good.
@@steevieg Could be that perpetual search for the next high. Their first several albums had so much intensity, and this had little. It asked us to think, rather than headbang or cry. A lot of people turn to music for the emotional catharsis, rather than reflection. I think for that reason, it's appreciated more once people have already processed the lessons.
You gotta check out a live version of When They Come For Me from the A Thousand Suns tour. Brad and Chester are playing percussion on stage and Chester hits those vocals at the end WHILE PLAYING THE DRUMS. It’s absolutely incredible
I am part of the fans who really love that they experimented so much with their sound and always tried to reinvent themselves while still being Linkin Park. I loved that Album. Still remember how I ran into the store to get it right on release.
Same! I was 15 and on vacation in Italy when they dropped the catalyst as the first single prior to the full release and I remember being so hyped for it. At that time, I didn't have any roaming and I spent half the day trying to find free WiFi to finally buy it on iTunes ... Good times 🥹 at the time I didn't really get what the album was about and I only got it many years later 😅 sick record!
14:02 In "When They Come For Me" Mike says in a verse, "I'm not a robot, I'm not a monkey and I will not dance even if the beat's funky", and the song which follows is titled Robot Boy. This album's a really well crafted story
This album is the one that took me back to Linkin Park again, surprisingly the songs in here helped me a lot in entering my adult years, love the journey from the start to end. Definitely the best Linkin Park album to date for me
This album has been my favorite LP album since it dropped. LP is my favorite band and has been my whole life. Number one band on Spotify year in review every year lol. But I remember when this album dropped it was very hated by fans and critically acclaimed. I love seeing people come around on this record over a decade later. Waiting for the End is my all time favorite song. It’s so good.
I've been waiting for this one, so happy. You hit the nail on the head when you said they sound removed from the action, like a cautionary tale. To me, that's exactly the point of this album. It's not the sound of someone able to do anything to stop it, it's the wailing cries of those who can only watch, or run, or pray. That's why my favourite song is Blackout. You go through twenty minutes of that distant, airy fairy, Mike does hip hop, Chester goes basically screamless, there's lots of world sounds and ambience, and those tiny sample songs that are only there to set up the worldbuilding of this nuclear hellscape. And then, suddenly, it's someone running for their life with blood in their eyes. It's the hardest song on the album, and it''s placed right on the turning point between the sins of the past, and the repeating of mistakes in the future. To me, it's such a violent sounding song, and then it switches and that angelic sound comes back and beckons to "collect the things you know", and you realise you just listened to someone die. This album isn't great, it's a mess, it's beautiful but so different, and I understand why people disliked it. But it's one of the best albums ever for pure imagery. It's an experience. You feel exactly what you need to feel, when you need to feel it. You get the message, and it hurts. We don't get a choice to avoid the nuke, save our souls, cheat death, etc, but it is still imperative that we do our duty, fight for what we believe in, and hope that when it's all said and done, the grace of god is there to catch us falling. And, obviously, though it needn't be said, all of this takes on new meaning with hindsight. The Messenger ties it all back together - "You're instinct's telling you to run, listen to your heart, those angel voices." Having faith when faced with the cruelty of life. "When you've suffered enough and your spirit is breaking", can't help but cry when I hear that lyric. Thank you for giving this one a listen.
As you said, the album is about nuclear/chemical warfare. The whole album builds up to the catalyst. A catalyst is used in chemical reactions to achieve the energy level needed for the reaction to happen, also in an atomic bomb. This song IS the atomic bomb. The lyrics are definitely pray-ish, since it is from the victims pov, pretty much asking god why such cruelty is happening to them. It is foreshadowed in most interludes that come in the album, e.g. the first track, the requiem, contains lyrics from the catalyst or jornada del muerto being the name of the desert where the first atomic bomb was tested. On the same interlude, the lyrics are saying „lift me up, let me go“ in japanese, which is repeated in the catalyst as well. Also fallout contains lyrics from burning in the skies, which in itself is a warning about what happens when such unimaginable force is unleashed. The songs when they come for me and wretches and kings resemble the people protesting against those methods, which is further underlined by empty spaces and MLKs speech, which come before and after their respective tracks. Robot boy and iridescent are pretty much the odd ones out in this album, since those are more hopeful and dont really have those doomsday vibes to them, although arguments could be made about them being the reminder that life goes on and we should make the best out of it. The messenger as the last track is of course comforting as well, but id say that it a better job with the reminding than robot boy and iridescent. All in all my favorite album as a whole, even though i dont listen to many songs separated because for most of the tracks you need the context and to be in the right mood to fully understand and feel them.
This Album is impressive; however, the biggest issue I have with the tracklist is that they have “Blackbirds” as a bonus track, even though it's one of the most underrated songs on the album and should have been included on the original tracklist. But that's just one man's opinion. As for the review, Awesome review, man!
Blackbirds does not fit the theme of the album in any way; the purpose of the song was to serve as a reward for beating a small mobile adventure game from many years ago called 8-Bit Rebellion, which they later stuck onto the deluxe version of ATS I do agree that it’s underrated though
@@Straw_BreakerI think New Divide and Blackbirds are more of a MTM feel overall. Still can't figure out where Not Alone would fit. And I forgot where QWERTY was supposed to go over the years
@@REYTRACER blackbirds is very MTM, I get the feeling it might’ve come from the same sessions QWERTY was originally a LPU track Not Alone is a bit of a special case given that it was made in response to victims of a natural disaster
Tbh, this album is my favourite album of them all. While the songs themselves are maybe not as strong as many of their songs from Meteora or Hybrid Theory, but as a whole album this is a masterpiece. I spent some of the best years of my childhood listening to this on repeat and I can't help getting nostalgic when listening to it today.
Iridescent is easily my favourite song of all time. Iridescent + Waiting for the End.....People have slept on A Thousand Suns for real. Easily my second favourite Linkin Park album.
When they come for me live had chester and Brad drumming too. Chester also did drumming for blackout live. The thousand sun's tour was the best I saw then play live.
It feels like this album they went out to make an album that tells a story all together instead of individual songs that got put on the same album. This album has some of my favourite Linkin Park tracks.
The Hunting Party was my favourite LP album for awhile but A Thousand Suns became my favourite a little while ago, listening to it on the way to see Oppenheimer and again after seeing all the connections and how it all comes together.
In my opinion, ats and living things are kind of like hybrid theory and meteora. Ht and ats are more raw sounding and very experimental, and meteora and living things take the sound from their respective predecessors and refine it to a more „appealing“ and focused sound. Not necessarily better in every way, but listening to those two gives you a feeling you can describe, whereas for ht and ats, there is no way to quite explain what youre feeling while hearing them
Very exciting to see you reacting to this album its top 3 linkin park album for me It never got the love it deserved even nowadays where its much more appreciated Would love if you checked out the living things and the hunting party album
At first listen I wasn’t onboard with this album but after a couple play throughs, it really grew on me. It’s obviously very experimental but I’m in love with Chester’s clean vocals, Mikes rapping, synths, funky beats and overall message work so beautifully together..I agree, Wretches and Kings is a dope song!
My fav album by them and nothing will replace that. The first time i listened to it, it felt weird and short. The second time though, i didnt follow the tracks and let it play as it is without the mindset of track 1, 2, 3...and i remember being mindblown. Its so much more than a collection of songs.. its all just one massive track. Its a story. Songs are so vastly different.. from structure to genres to everything... and you barely isolate them as songs all together. The little things, even the interludes make this a masterpiece... the way wisdom justice and love turns from clear to static.... like a haunting omen of the decay after a nuclear explosion. Then there is Blackout where everything is turned on its head.. chester raps, mike sings, vocals are rage.. instrumentals are mellow and so on Oddly enough, i think ATS and THP are their best work. They are much more than albums for angsty kids. Better than Meteora and HT.
I remember when I first heard this I as like... woah this is way different than what I was expecting and from what they had done before. It became my fave album of theirs. Also, this album came out at the same time as the Halo : Reach videogame. The Catalyst was used in some fan made game trailers using promo footage cut to match the lyrics and the song fits the story of Reach perfectly.
"when they come for me & blackout" used to be my favorite song to watch in their live performances, because you would see half the band playing drums and their focus was funny to watch :D loved it when they played instruments they werent used to playing
Waiting for the End, Iridescent, The Catalyst, The Messenger. These songs get me every single time. Then you also get songs like Burning in the Skies, When They Come for Me, and Robot Boy. Then you get hit by Blackout and Wretches and Kings to slap you in the face. So good.

I feel like even for linkin park fans this one was an acquired taste. Took me a while but this became one of my favorite albums.
Everyone is talking about Oppenheimer Movie. 👍
Everyone should talking about LP's album ATS. ✅
This ain't a album with different song... Of u see this whole album is a one whole song.. The interludes most the times connects the songs to each other if u listen carefully...
How are you able to have the songs in their entirety in your video without getting your video blocked worldwide cuz of copyright?
It actually was blocked for a while, but I disputed the claims and it was surprisingly released!
@davidpwolfe Oh I see, thank you for the reply
Anytime!
If you watch the music videos, they have the consecutive order of an atomic apocalypse
Woah that's cool!
Your reaction to iridescent pissed me off
Best album from Linkin park. For me Hybrid theory and meteora are 1 step below ATS.
Transformer vibe
What do you mean "the catalyst never arives"? Lift me up and let me go dude!
Funny but I like the way Emily sings waiting for the end better than Chester.
Day of the dead is "Jornada Del Muerto"
Listened to this album for the first time when i was a teenager. You ruined it for me, now i notice the upbeat edm style beats and they make it weird.
sorry! 😅
