i have a buddy who sort of lived this, well all 3 of the siblings, it only stopped when i went up to take them some stuff and i saw his sister pass out from heat stroke, i got the farmer who knew me to call his home and get them to call 911, and we got her into the pond... then found the other 2 were in nearly as bad a state, dad was passed out drunk in his "office" with the a/c cranked up... dude woke up before the cops showed and got to the pond in a drunken rage the kids werent working... the farmer was gonna fight him... then he saw my face and "just dont kill him"... and went back to holding nessa.... who was NOT in good shape, it was bad enogh the kids spent 3 days in the hosp.. cops showed up to a drunk adult fighting a teen and getting his ass wrecked... he wasnt feeling it but... he sure did when he woke up in the jail... this being the 90's, the cops didnt even jump in till the jackass tried to grab a pipe as a weapon... they didnt have to do much, i kicked him and the pipe hit the 240v "Weed burner" electric fence around the animal pen and... he dropped the pipe LOL...
dad went to prison for 15 years IF he got good time, mom went for 9 and was released into an assisted living mental health focused community... partially for her good but it also kept her from being around kids unsupervised since she used to say horrific shit to the kids... never one defended them, but also admits the husband never laid a hand on her, she insisted the kids deserved it because he said so.. what we later learned was, despite being from a mormon family they were horrified by her and what she kept saying... and i spent enough time around these people... none of them held the views she spewed... BUT, she started talking like that in highschool and... found a man who liked her views... "the fathers always right"... i actually met one of her doctors and... the whole team apparently agree she dosnt want responsibility for anything on her, and her views rooted from that, after one of her friends got knocked up and married some old guy..
(by choice not force, turned out she got him drunk and jumped him, by her own account... and having known her most of my life.. her and her husband are genuinely a perfect match... regardless of how they got togather.. the man flat out says he would have died alone if she didnt do that and convince him that the only way to avoid stigma and possible legal problems was to marry her... funny enough it wasnt a threat so much as, she knew how the community they grew up in was... its part of why they moved out here... the small OR costal town they grew up in... on the other hand, them getting hitched wasnt going to get more than at most some side long glances and a bit of envy.. from both men and women.. having seen their HS pictures.. yeah.. they could have genuinely been film stars in the golden age of film... he got a job at the papermill in camas and she got a job at the woolen mill in washougal...
anyway... the parents saw their kids, by their own account, as property and farm equipment, not as people, and went to prison... good place for them...
oh, the kids ended up with the fam, the judge had the grandparents take custodial ownership, the fam could produce enough to effectively pay child support to the grandparents who moved back to the mainland from guam to take care of the kids... both were teachers... buddy got to spend summers in guam for the rest of HS, i regret not taking the offer go join them one summer, i didnt realize they were meaning it as in "you dont need to do more then pack cloths, we will cover the rest"... i did get to join them for a trip that looped around WA, OR and a small dip into CA though the next year, we hit up properties they owned including one that crosses the CA-OR boarder.. was a fun trip... we went white water rafting several times... got paid for getting a d8 dozer running and helping repair a landslide covered bit of logging/mining road using it.. and yes it was the teens who got it running, the old folks watched thinking we wouldnt get it working but were having fun.. later he asked if we actually knew wtf we were doing and when all of 8 kids in unison 'well, duh' (it was a thing back then)... and yes, those mad-lad old folks took 8 kids themselves and 4 "adults" who were often less mature than us kids LOL.. (college kids with access to booze and weed during a camping trip... so expected...heh..)... the dozer just needed new plug cables, fluids and fresh fuel and.. once it burned off the "i have sat here for over 20 years without being used"... that things been used yearly since then, if only to show off tourists/campers a genuine WWII military d8... they know if they keep it running and mantained it will out live us all.. like it has its original users/creators/etc...
