That is a really nice lamp 😃 and the lava rocks are super cool inside the bottle 👍 never thought of making my own lamp before. Don't know about the drilling part, but thanks for this, it's a neat idea.
You really did a good job with this video watch your video over and over to make sure I get it right. Going to make 2 lamp have my lamp kits ready to go Thank you for sharing oh by the way love that bottle. Sometimes it's hard to find bottles but I can buy them on ebay people's will not give those bottles up but I do have a few my son friend gives me bottles when he comes across them. Just love your video have a nice day.
James, That should work just fine. You'll need something to hold the lamp stem in place when you put it into the bottle neck. In the video I used the original bottle stopper.
hazeleyes7177, Thank you. The bottle itself, seemed perfectly shaped and designed for a night stand. We did a whole write up about the bottle lamp kits: www.bottle-lamp.com/diy-projects/bottle-lamp-kits-explained/
which would be better a glass of diamond drill bit I'm going to be using a Jack Daniels bottle and a kraken rum bottle and any tips for round bottles? Thanks
Hey Nick - this video was awesome and inspired my wife and I to forgo the pottery barn purchase and make our own lamps (we'll see if that turns out well). We'd really like to replicate the approach you took here, so that being said: (1) what size drill bit did you use for the bottle cap / cork versus what size did you use for the glass hole at the base of the bottle? (2) Is it okay to use a diamond drill bit for both of these applications? (3) Lastly, did you use the Home Depot kit for your lamp, and if so did you have to buy the grommet (for the hole at the base of the lamp) separately? Thanks so much!
Adam Re, I simply matched up a drill bit that would fit the diameter of the threaded rod that came with the kit. For this hole I used a regular drill bit. I wouldn't recommend using your diamond tipped hole bit for this procedure. It would be wasting the drill bit on a material that can be done with a regular bit. In regards to your last question; I have not used the Home Depot kit but I have used different lamp kits and none of them came with the rubber grommet. I would purchase a bulk bag of them. Let us know how your bottle lamps turn out!
They usually come with three varied size holders. Here is my video that shows how to work with the ones that are close but don't quite fill the space: ruclips.net/video/WIsen70_Mlg/видео.html
I would recommend a 1/2" drill bit. If you measure up the size of the threaded rod that comes with your bottle lamp kit then you will have a good idea as well.
The cork in the video had a metal plated top. If you are attempting to do this with just a regular wine bottle cork it will probably be a little more tricky. If your cork does crumble you can use the holders that come with the bottle lamp kit. Use a drill bit that is closest to threaded rod's size.
No worries. Take the one that is closest to fitting inside the bottle neck and add a layer or two of duct tape to the outside of the holder. If you cut the width of the duct tape to the width of the holder it will look more uniform and appealing.
Tony, Great minds think alike! There are some bottles that are just too cool to throw away. The 'ghost ship' on this one was just screaming to be re-purposed. Did you find the right lamp shade?
Nick Jager The bottle is great, the rum though.. bleh. I took the label off and scraped off everything except the ship. I have a few lamp shades but I used one that matched the width. I like to use black lights in some of the other lamps. You can find them at Walmart for about $4-5 and I've found they look better without the shade.
Excellent work. I will make it immediately. Please tell me which is that liquor bottle? So i can buy it and do the same. And please if you know tell me that name of the liquor.Thank you
Actually nice job. Say this, big the thickness of the cable, it could be thinner, since the watts of the led lamps are minimal (low) now. Here in Europe there are lamp holders with couple of rings that holding the lampshade firmly!
Good question (wished I would have shown that in the video). I used a large pair of pliers and let it rest on my work bench while drilling it from the top. The pliers will keep it from turning while you are drilling.

The drilling part just takes patience and constant pressure. It's a practical hobby that I'm sure you will enjoy. 😉
Thank you very much for this step-by-step easy to follow tutorial. It was very helpful.
Your welcome.
Great! These will be part of winter project list. Thanks.
Your welcome.
this is one of the better videos i have seen
Thank you. We enjoy the feedback.
Thank you so much. Amazing tutorial. Just the thing I was looking for.
Glad to hear.
Just curious why you didn't use the lamp socket that the cord comes out of the top instead of having to drill the bottle?
kd4ddp, I like the look of the lamp cord coming out of the base of the bottle rather than the top. A personal preference I guess.
I love it! thanks for the great tutorial.
Thank you. Let us know if you give it a try! :)
Nick Jager will do, thanks.

Thank you for the kind words.
I'm planning on doing this. just wondering could I break up an old lamp for the cord
rather than buying one?
James,

Loved your lamp😀 Thank you for a clear, simple explanation! I will definitely try making one soon. Where did you get your lamp kit?

I would go with the diamond drill bit.
how did you drill it out without cracking the glass?
Michael,
A combination of the 'glass drill bits' and using a slow and steady pressure will prevent the cracking from happening.
Fantastic idea going to try this 😎
Let us know how it turns out for you! :)
Awesome video
Thank you!

What if you have a wider neck jar you want to use that don’t have caps..Do kits come with different sized light fixtures? Thanks for the video!

Nick and Silke Jager thank you! Hopefully this helps with my own DIY lamp 🤗
What size drill bit did you use to drill through the cork????
I would recommend a 1/2" drill bit. If you measure up the size of the threaded rod that comes with your bottle lamp kit then you will have a good idea as well.
How did you drill a hole into the cork without it crumbling? And what size bit will be needed?
The cork in the video had a metal plated top. If you are attempting to do this with just a regular wine bottle cork it will probably be a little more tricky. If your cork does crumble you can use the holders that come with the bottle lamp kit. Use a drill bit that is closest to threaded rod's size.
The holders that came with the bottle lamp kit aren’t fitting, none of them fit the opening of the bottle.
No worries. Take the one that is closest to fitting inside the bottle neck and add a layer or two of duct tape to the outside of the holder. If you cut the width of the duct tape to the width of the holder it will look more uniform and appealing.
Holy crap I was looking into hanging bottle lights and I found this, I made this with that exact same Costco bottle a few months ago.

What kind of rock did you use to fill up the bottle?
I really can't say specifically what kind they are but that they came from Hobby Lobby.
So a regular bottle lamp can’t open?
No. All of the wiring and filler are added through the top and the drilled hole.
@@NickandSilkeCreate Shoot I bought one lamp thinking it can open 😣

Anna, Thank you so much! I got this particular bottle at Costco. It's the Kirkland Rum bottle. Please let us know how it turns out for you.
Is that a Jason Mraz song playing in the background?
Yes it is. :)
Neat! I want to make a Jack Daniels one for my hubby for Christmas :)
Elizabeth, did you make the lamp for your husband?
Send us a picture and we'll showcase it!

Thank you.
FFS people. Wear a good dust mask when drilling glass. Do not want glass dust in your lungs.
slipnpitch, You are absolutely correct. Thank you.
I think these are cool ideas but wouldnt it be easier to just use a corldless bulb??? Lol
@sweetestnectorofSunflowers, It looks like this process has just been outdated!
Reminisce to the days when my old man had hair😂
Ahhhhh the memories!
Yeah good old days. Not that these arent.

So true.

What did you place the cork on when you drilled a hole through it?
Good question (wished I would have shown that in the video). I used a large pair of pliers and let it rest on my work bench while drilling it from the top. The pliers will keep it from turning while you are drilling.
