Finally! A video that makes sense. I have watched so many confusing videos on this process. You make it so much more understandable. I think I can actually do this. Thanks, mate.
I’ll definitely try that! If you laminate two sheets of vinyl together back to back, you can separate them after laminated. The front will remain “sublimatable” while the back will be free from the lamination film, making it more flexible and easier to peel off.
in theory yes, just need to be mindful of the thickness going through the laminator itself. Heat pressing the laminate sheets to the vinyl never gave good results for me.
Considering the ordinary use for a laminator with a heavy cardstock inside the "sandwich," two sheets of Oracal 651, back to back, is certainly not as thick. I only get frustrated with the 651 wanting to coil up inside the pouch, so I never do this when I'm tired.

Two questions for you can you sublimate direct to vinyl then laminate or is it too hot and secondly can you use any vinyl if your using the laminate on top. Look forward to a reply cheers good video.
In testing, sublimating direct to the vinyl produced dull washed out colours. Laminating over the top helped get a shine but the colours still weren't as vibrant. Hi, my profile pic is the Clear Gloss Vinyl Sticker I want to make. Using the 'clear' Oracle 651 vinyl, will I be able to transfer the colour white onto my see-through/clear Gloss vinyl sticker? I notice that your Batman sticker had colour (not white) so I wanted to check. My goal is to achieve my profile pic of the white flowers with a see-through background (background is not brown like the picture, but should be see-through like the 'clear' oracle 651 vinyl !). Thank you Black Cat Productions.
Yes, I had some trial versions stuck on an outside window and they lasted for ages. I can't guarentee years but they certainly didn't fade or peel while I was testing.
Yes and no. I tested one stuck on an outside window. The colours stayed well but the lamination started to peel after about 3 months. These are ideal for indor use. Jars, bottles etc, maybe kids toy boxes or anything not likely to spend too long outside in the elements.
Because they don’t last forever I print family photos. Sublimated lamented and put on my parents head stones. It’s ok they don’t last. We have 4 seasons and family occasions. Now my parents can have a piece of our lives. It may sound weird but to us it’s a very special thing. I first started doing this years before Cricut and sublimation was poppy. I used packing tape to cover my photos on photo paper and inkjet ink. Worked ok. But I think this will definitely look better and Color’s last longer. Thank you
What mil thickness are your laminating sheets? I have the option of 5 mil and 3 mil. I bought 5 mil and it seems a little too thick, but will wait for your answer before purchasing the 3mil. TIA.
My laminator can use thick and thin (adjustment dial on the side) Although it seems thick, remember youll only be using the front. The paper backing and rear of the laminate pouch will be discarded. 5mm or 3mm should work but if you personally feel the 5mm is too thick, try the 3mm.
Shouldn't really mate buddy, the laminate pouches I have came unbranded in a bag (no box) so not sure of the microns. Thinner the better I guess as long as your laminator can deal with slim pouches.
I did try a different brand of vinyl before purchasing the ORACAL651 but it seemed to crinkle under the heat. Definitely worth experimenting with different vinyl brands though.
early tests prove positive. Had a test sticker stuck on an outside window for over a month in sun, rain, snow and ice and still good colours and adhesion.
Hi how do you get around your plotter seeing the registration Mark's in reverse/mirrored after you've heatpressed the image. Mine doesn't cut on the image after I press the image. Thanks for the video you can press straight on the vinyl but that ends up looking matte this way gives it a nice glossy finish.
I wondered exactly the same when I was trialling this method. Fried my brain tbh, but all I do is print and press in mirror but cut in un-mirrored. The registration marks identify the furthest points so mirrored or un-mirrored they stay the same. I know it sounds alien but give it a go.

Just got round to trying this and what I found out was if I cut a symmetrical image I had no problems but if the image is different on one side my plotter would cut the image the wrong way round due to it been mirrored after heat pressing. I hadn't noticed before there is an option in my cutting software (sign master pro) to cut in mirrored mode once I clicked this option the problem was solved and everything cuts as it should. Wish I had seen this option before I've wasted so much vinyl haha. Love the nice glossy images though from following your idea, works really well 👍

@@ccdesign296 hi, yes I am laminating the vinyl into the laminated sheets using the laminator. If I sublimate at 300+ degrees I can get it to sublimate, but it burns the laminate. It is in F as well.
@@heather0479 perhaps try a different brand of laminate sheets. Or try getting laminate sheets with a thinner and thicker micron rate.
@@ccdesign296 ya, that’s what I was thinking. Your sheets do look thinner. Thank you for your advice
Hi there, sorry to hijack this video but was wondering if you had an idea when the full van tour of the t5 camper was coming? Love the layout, just got myself a lwb t5.1 and looking to do the same / similar layout. Did you do the build youself? Thanks
Hi Bob, if on Instagram, go check out @T5FHX, thats the van build/adventures. Drop us a message on there if you need any help or info. Cheers
I see you are using Ink experts sub paper. What ICC profile do you use it on? thank you
Why not print on the vinyl then laminate over that to protect the ink print?
From testing, and as others have found, printing directly to the vinyl gives dull colours and even turns the gloss vinyl matt. Its the poly in the laminate sheet that allows the sublimation.
@@ccdesign296 is it waterproof though after being printed on the laminate? I’d like to start making anima decals for cars* so I need to know if they’d hold up in the sun / rain >.
@@ohayodecals6410 I have had one stuck on the window outside as a trial for over a month now. Wind, Rain, Sun and even Snow and ice and it seems to have held up ok. Colours still good, no peeling. Time will tell but early results are proving good!
@@ccdesign296 wow thanks!!
I having the problem that the laminate pouch didn't stick in the 651 very well .... u can peel the laminate off like the sticker itself. what doing I wrong?
Heat press temps tend to vary so much, I'd try a few different temps and durations. Is the laminate sticking to the vinyl straight out the laminator and before the heatpress stage?
@@ccdesign296 no I doesn't stick on the vinyl from the beginning. trying different pouches, different temperatures and time. now I ordered a laminator, maybe the result is better than with the heatpress. but I don't think so, I viewed other videos they laminated wood canvas and so on. I can't put that throw the laminator 😅
maybe its ok as is, but imo it feels very "loosen" on the vinyl. like a bad sticker.
is the laminate from the vinyl even not resolvable at your process? or how much strength is necessary to separate the parts again?
@@timherold4848 I never had much success heat pressing the vinyl into the laminate pouches, that's why I used the laminator. The laminator smoothes the bubbles out as it slowly rolls through therefore giving a better even adhesion. Heat pressing applies downward pressure so any trapped air isn't pushed out.
hi again.... what thickness laminate are you using? thanks Tony
try various thicknesses, it'll depend on your laminate machine. I just use a standard laminator pouch
Does the colors hold up well in the elements if u put it on a car window ?
It's not bad considering people's comments about it not being uv proof. Never gonna last as long as a proper pigment printed sticker but we are working with a lot cheaper equipment 👍
@@ccdesign296 yeah , I tried one with just my inkjet printer and it only lasted a couple of days lol so I was hoping I could make one with my sublimation printer . I seen where someone said they made using uv protected lamination plastic
I tried different vinyl and the results just weren't as good. Some of the vinyl couldn't take the heat either.
But feel free to experiment, you might get lucky with your choice of vinyl 👍🏼
Hi, my profile pic is the Clear Gloss Vinyl Sticker I want to make. Using the 'clear' Oracle 651 vinyl, will I be able to transfer the colour white onto my see-through/clear Gloss vinyl sticker? I notice that your Batman sticker had colour (not white) so I wanted to check. My goal is to achieve my profile pic of the white flowers with a see-through background (background is not brown like the picture, but should be see-through like the 'clear' oracle 651 vinyl !). Thank you Black Cat Productions.
Please let me know ✨
the color white does not come thru unless you have white ink. Sawgrass has a printer thaat does white I believe
Brilliant video and much appreciated.
What cutter do you have?
Currently a Graphtec CE6000
What if you dont have a lamintor
Grab one locally. As i say in the video, they are very cheap. Using the heatpress doesn't work so you'll need a laminator.
Is this waterproof ?
not sure if you mean 180 F or C because the F is not hot enough or its just not working for me
It's Celsius, turn on captions for more advice during the video
Is it water proof can I use it for car decals ?
Yes, I had some trial versions stuck on an outside window and they lasted for ages. I can't guarentee years but they certainly didn't fade or peel while I was testing.
This is by far the best video ever, I have one question is it water proof
TIA.
My laminator can use thick and thin (adjustment dial on the side)
Although it seems thick, remember youll only be using the front. The paper backing and rear of the laminate pouch will be discarded. 5mm or 3mm should work but if you personally feel the 5mm is too thick, try the 3mm.
@@ccdesign296 Okay, great. I'll give it another go and see how it works then. I appreciate that quick response!
do u have to use laminate sheets
It's the poly in the laminate sheet you sublimate onto so yes.
@@ccdesign296 okay thank you
Can you use Cricut vinyl for this?
To be totally honest I'm not sure as i don't have Cricut vinyl. Give it a go, what have you got to lose?
That’s amazing. Thank you
Its the 180° c or f
Centigrade 👍🏼
Wow this is great. Is it possible to sublimate directly onto the vinyl?
Yes you can, however the heat makes the vinyl go matt and the colours are dull. This way the stickers are glossy and vibrant.
how many microns is the lamination film?
Shouldn't really mate buddy, the laminate pouches I have came unbranded in a bag (no box) so not sure of the microns. Thinner the better I guess as long as your laminator can deal with slim pouches.
@@ccdesign296 ok, thank you!
But didn't you juste waste half the product by using both sides of the laminate?
Thanks for sharing 😊
Nice
Is it the same for the clear vinyl?
Throughout the video i mention its the same process for white or clear.
Great tutorial thank you
Because you are sublimating onto the laminate, do you have to use Oracal 651? Or can you use any vinyl?
I did try a different brand of vinyl before purchasing the ORACAL651 but it seemed to crinkle under the heat. Definitely worth experimenting with different vinyl brands though.
Will these be waterproof doing them this way?
early tests prove positive.
I will thank you for the quick reply. Top job by the way maybe make a video on this and put it in the title I'm sure loads of us have the same problem and I cant find anything on it searching RUclips so it should hopefully get you loads of views. I'm gonna subscribe mate. Thanks again.
Love the nice glossy images though from following your idea, works really well 👍
@@ForwardMovingDesigns ha ha, glad you got it sorted, as I said, I print in mirrored and cut in un-mirrored (which is now kind of what you are doing) Pleased it's all come good for you. Happy Sticker making!
Yes so to clarify things then what we are saying is I mirror my work in the Workspace and you mirror your work in the printer options.
Great video! One question.. will the sublimation be waterproof?
Check out some of the replies, had similar questions. I've had one stuck on a window outside for around a month to test it out. So far so good. Sun, rain, snow and ice and is holding up ok.
You can sublimate right on the vinyl. You don't have to use the laminate pouches at all to make it.
Correct, however the heat melts the shine off the vinyl and you end up will dull matt stickers
I want to know how to do it on a clear and onto a tumbler. what would the supplies i need for it to be permeant?
Creating a clear sticker using clear Oracal 651 is exactly the same process as I show for the white. To create a permanent decal you would realistically need a pigment printer which start at around 6K :o
@@ccdesign296 not particularly. I have 1 a4 sized printer and a a1+ printer running on pigment ink for under 50€ each. Got both printers as "fix her uppers". Then cleaned the heads thoroughly, connnected a ciss, and filled them up with pigment ink. Aliexpress is where i got the ciss systems from.
Is the vinyl used for printing or is it just white vinyl?
Both
Thank you so much
but you can sublimate on oracal 651 white and clear without the lamination
correct, however the colours are extremely dull and the heat makes the vinyl go matt.
@@ccdesign296 then you can add laminate after to make it glossy and weather proof
Now try making work on Oracal 651-091 Gold
I take it the temp is celcius. I tried to convert it to Fahrenheit and my laminate gets all winked. I've gone thru about 50 sheets and still can get it right. I'm trying to make a page of sticker for the grandkids. I'm using 3mil laminate. You make it look so easy. If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks
Have you got captions turned on for the video? It's 180⁰ Celsius. Are you using a heat press to laminate the vinyl as heatpressing doesn't work. Turn on captions and read the notes on the video, it will definitely help.
@@ccdesign296 I think they mean after that, when using the press to sublimate onto the laminate sheets
Would this work and hold up for like an outdoor sign?! Thanks so much for all this info!!
Had some test stickers on the outside windows of the house and lasted very well. No fade or peel
excellent video thanks ;-)
Thank you!
Thanks!!!!
you can sub on 651 without laminate
correct but the colours are dull and subdued.
