He's also one of the few top-tier musicians from back in the day who survived rock and roll. From 1982-2001 this legend drove pantera's sound and lives to tell about it!
I love the sound of just bass and drums under dime's solos. There is no need for another guitar in there when Rex provides that driving force to keep everything locked in and tight while Dime shreds it up on top.
I think he is underrated, when talking about bass to other people, he isn't mentioned much. His playing style is like he is the non-existent rhythm guitar, he near enough does his own solos behind Dime's. Such a great player
rockstribute I don't think he's underrated man, he was nominated as bassist of the year by Hit Parader year after year and kept winning! Just the fact the he was in Pantera makes him stand out there more than other bass players, but everyone is entitled to their opinion
rolando mota Oh I didn't know that! well I just meant general conversation with other Metalheads he doesn't get much recognition (at least in the groups of people that I know) compared to many others
Rex is one of the very few hard rockers who survived being a super star. Though he wasn't without significant alcohol and drug damage, he does go on to talk about in his book how in the final days of pantera the tensions were so high and the band was so drained with eachother that they were touring on separate buses. One can't help but wonder what MUSIC would be like if these men were still all together. Criminally underrated bass player who do his part in the best hard rock band in history.
@@lukeaustin4465 He admitted to doing tons of cocaine in his autobiography but whether or not that's a hard drug I guess depends on who you ask. Mix cocaine and alcohol and that shit is pretty fucking deadly, though.
Songs in order: 0:05: Pantera - I'm Broken 2:18 - Kill Devil Hill - We're All Gonna Die 4:08 - Pantera - Walk 6:30 - Kill Devil Hill - We're All Gonna Die (again)
This dude is my hero. I play all sorts of music on my bass but it was Rex who really taught me that staying in pocket and grooving the shit out what notes you have is the key to success. His bass backings on Floods and Walk are insane! honorable mention to his bass work on cemetery gates
Darren Middaugh Exactly. No Dime equals no Pantera. When those assholes in the press keep dredging up the notion of the surviving members reuniting with Zakk Wylde on guitar, I don't know whether to laugh, be pissed off, or be disgusted that they would entertain the idea of shitting on Dime's legacy that way. Pantera ended for good when Dime died, so they should give it a rest and move on.
A great bass player is always required if you want to be a killer trio. They not only have to keep the groove going during the guitar solo, but also fill in the empty space and keep the bottom end thump going. Rex does all of that and more! Great player.
I've always described Rex's sound as the ballsiest in the business. He's not a flashy, technical player but his style is simple, punchy, and perfectly compliments..and often enhances..the guitar. One of the best bassists in the genre.
The focus was always on Dime and what a sick guitar player he was, but I'll never forget this one part in Watch It Go where it's showing Rex playing bass on stage and I was like, "holy shit"
Rex Brown, Dave Ellifson, Jason Newsted, Mike Inez All 4 of which I have always admired for their ability and that soul crushing tone they can get out there.
Rex has a very good tone with his bass isolated. When it's played in context his bass tone/texture and grit is perfection. He's an easy 11 out of 10 as a bassist. Especially live.
Humble legend!!! Rex rule, Pantera always in my heart, and Kill Devil Hill is such a an outstanding relief cause i love the 90s soun, Rex&Co nailed it with KDH
lol I can totally relate to this dude I used to play tuba and knew bass clef and everyone played guitar when I was learning so I bought a bass and Joined a band as a freshman in high school haha those were the days.
Rex said in Young Guitar(Japanese magazine) that like "I like Michael Anthony, John Paul Jones and I'm not Billy Sheehan." That statement really express how HR/HM bassist supposed to be and his play style.
You get pissed off because the bass is so quiet in pantera's recordings, all you can hear is guitar. Then you go to a clinic to hear some actual pantera bass playing. And then the playback is louder than the bass. :-(
I remember when i saw pantera the thing i remember the most was what great bass tone rex has live... him and vinnie poul was a powerhouse of a rythm section
Just like Michael Anthony when you the bass player next to one of the greatest guitar players in the world you better bring the goods. Rex brought the goods!!!

I've always liked Rex. He's one of the few bass players that really shines during the guitar solo.
being in a 3pc helps tremendously in that respect, I prefer 3pc to 4 personally.
Pantera always sounded good as fuck live because they dont have a rhythm guitarist to cover up Rex during solos
This man understand the music... the flood bass is a movement to take as a reference
nolasludge That’s a fuckin’ bass player right there!!!!

Yeah, it's fucking wonderful. That's one of the reasons I prefer to play bass in a band with only one guitarist. I just think it sounds cooler.
Totally agree with you
-It makes them desappear- at 4:40 solo dime & rex at basss omggggggg
Rex , cliff burton, , jason newsted
My 3 favorite bassist !
Indeed he's like a metal version of John Paul Jones
every note he plays is a punch in the face...amazing sound
Rex reminds me a lot of bassist Mike Inez...he's steady, not super flashy, plays great, his lines are solid and he's an all around great person
i know who you talking about :)
Agree, and both underrated.
...and Rex Brown and Mike Inez played bass on some songs included on Jerry Cantrell's first solo album Boggy Depot.
They are actually friends lol
Oh and they both play Spector basses.
Pantera is a perfect band, with an amazing vocal, skillful guitar, technical drum with a groovy bass
And a racist singer 😂
They really are
Rex , cliff burton, , jason newsted
My 3 favorite bassist !
Same
Me too
You said "Cliff Burton" 🎯💯🎯💯
Replace cliff with duff McKagan and im with you
no bullshit, my grandma used to hang out with he and his ex at the same country club in Arlington,Tx. She said he was a nice guy.

He didn't do hard drugs, he definitely had an alcohol problem though.

happy to see rex is looking very healthy
And happy
Yeah, he quit drinking. Everyone assoc w Pantera was drunk out of their dams minds during their shows.
I was a bit disappointed.😒
His playing is insanely tight! That gets overlooked a lot.
Such an underrated bassist. I love everything about this bass and Rex seems like a nice, good guy
never heard a bad tone from this guy
Rex's tone is so gnarly. Also, incredible how he can make a 4 string sound like a 5 string.
His bass presence has always been amazing, and Harke amps are amazing as well, great combo.

His bass sounds awesome!
His tone is fantastic and he is steady as they get, you can't really ask for more in a bass player.

The closest we will ever get to a Pantera Reuinion..lol
that's not funny.
That will never happen
Darren Middaugh Nah, that's Phil and Rex on stage playing Pantera songs together to this day.
Darren Middaugh Exactly. No Dime equals no Pantera. 6672rock I think most of the people saying zakk on guitar meant as a tribute to dime
They're very few like Rex.... An outstanding positive extremely talented Brother.... He makes me proud to say I was born and raised in Texas.....🤘😊

You should really try Spector basses then, all of the players you mentioned commonly used one in the studio

Nah...Trujillo is 1000 times better....Rex was in the band because the bass is needed, but when you have Dimebag playing bass is obsolete.

thats literally exactly me
***** Low brass for the win!! (trombone player here)
we should all make a metal cover band with just the bass brass section! lol
Alexis Zaragoza OH MY GOD YES!!!!! Just like covering slayer with like a low brass quartet or something. xD
Killer Spector tone..
Hartke Amps, Spector Bass, and all attitude! I wanna be Rex Brown when I die! =)
The only reason he used Hartke was they were paying him $$$$ to use their amps.
Damn, that Kill Devil Hill song sounds a lot like Alice. Need to give them a listen
Had the exact same thought straight away
The crowds reaction when he says “its only got 4 strings on it” lol

steve buscemi looks good with long hair.
LOL
You might be onto something. I always got the impression Steve Buscemi modeled his character in the movie Airheads after Rex Brown.
Fragmenta Official haha i always got that impression too
Fragmenta Official I always wondered if he did that soon as I seen airheads and seen him I thought of rex lol
mysterywhiteboy72 look out we have a comedian over here
amazing sound! his tone is very impressive!

That's the idea, at least the bass is a lot louder than on a studio recording. And the recordings aren't that quiet with a good pair of headphones.
+mkfanforever58 when I say recordings I mean the bass on the recordings.
+TheFabio you can hear the bass if you listen close enough
+TheFabio you can hear the bass if you listen close enough
I'm with you. Yes you can he him with headphones but this is meant to be a bass clinic. Just looked like Rex was miming to the songs.
Rex brown, one of my favorites 🤙🏾
I gained a real new appreciation for Rex after watching his interview with Rick Beato last month.
I'm so glad this is a thing
What a beast! Beautiful tone and killer groove. To be a classic band, all the pieces have to be there in equal measure and fit.
Thankful for hours .months .years .of bliss in heavy riffs .
I was there! I used to go visit Larry Hartke there every week - he has his own little bass section. Nicest guy in the world!
thanx buddy. I'm playing bout with my action. I do set mine low anyway, like that clicky sound it gives me.
saw kyng live with zakk sabbath didn't hear of them before but instantly became a fan that night.
Rex Brown is a beast
dude i swear thats alice in chains around the 3 minute mark!!??
i thought i heard layne scream too
he was good buddies with some of the guys from Alice in Chains i think. pretty sure he said so in his autobiography.
he is so sweet and inspiring!

Rex Brown got me to pick up the bass!
Kill Devil Hill is a great band; especially today, when good riff/groove type metal bands are rare.

I wish he played his bass solo during Floods. He really shines during Cowboys too
KDH, Rex in band pic @ ~ 6:30, dude looks resembles Cliff Burton (or even Lemmy!) a bit!!! Rex kicks so much a$$. Nice upload!
The best Rex's sound for me was Spector bass with Ampeg amp + cabs 👍👍🍺

He was nice and loud live.
those amps are for sale. i saw them in the internet forgot were.
I'm not a Pantera fan, but as a bass player, I am a Rex Brown fan. Dude is awesome
Forever riff love .
T-Rex baby! that tone!
I still can't determine if that 1st fret note in the main riff of Walk is actually bent or not--- maybe it is only a very slight bend if at all?
