I don't think Dave Ellefson gets enough credit and respect as bass player. His bass lines are groovy as fuck and one of the things that make Megadeth so badass.
totally... i think this is because of a stigma that pick-bassists are failures or somthing like that. Dave always managed to to play interesting and relatively complex parts with pick like a boss
Hes consistently considered as one of the top 10 greatest metal bassists of all time by music journalists and people in general, I dont think that makes him underrated... =P
To be fair, I'm pretty sure Cliff could do much more than Dave.. I mean, Dave uses a pick, and I doubt he could do some of the things Cliff could do. Not bashing on Dave, because he's one of my favorite bassist and a big inspiration to my playing, but a lot of bassist can't compare to how Cliff would play. Especially at Cliff's age.
NewVegasMessiah Come on, why would pick playing be easier than finger playing ...? The only thing that pick makes easier is fast playing, like the bridge part on One. But pick makes it harder to control your tone, to mute the strings. And listen to Killing is my Business, his bass playing is exquisite, and he was about as old as Cliff.
Gotta hand it to Ellefson, he's a monster behind the Bass. Anyone who can match Mustaine's riffs on Bass guitar and accent where necessary at the level of perfection that Ellefson delivers deserves a mention in the history books. Megadeth needs to get inducted in the RnR hall of fame already!
+kael tha's ^ this. Nothing against Cliff, I love his work and Rest in Peace (RIP Nick Menza too, so sad), but overall, it's not as god-like as people like to make out, compared to what other bassists can do. He paved the way, obviously, to show what bass in metal could do, but he is overrated.
+Goabnb94 True. As a bassist myself for 22 yesrs, and without saying i am near those pros, i can say that, to me, its most "easy" playing or practice much of the Cliff compotitions than many of Jr. cos he is very tech in what he does, for his jazz roots, i think. Eather way, Cliff was good and ground breaking in his time, pushing the bass to the front in the metal music style...
@@toys4072 jason couldnt even play cliffs lines lol. Ellefson is bad ass on that beast of a bass. No fucking joke. Totally has his own unique style and sound. Anyone trying to imitate him would just look foolish. I don't recall ever seeing or hearing anyone even bother trying. Just seems like he is on a whole different level of expertise. Mad respect for this Heavy Metal living legend
Dave this is totally cool. all focused in on the bass and seeing the the person who wrote these bass parts play them is so enjoyable. Truly a inspiration for me to watch. thanx again
Approximately 40% of the people watching the Holy Wars video clicked to see this Five Magics video... I'm surprised, I guess the other 60% doesn't know whats up. IMO this would be the song I'd ask Ellefson to play haha.
David if you please!!!!! He masters Five Magics!!!!!!! This is sincerely one of the best bass lines in a song ever. I was very lucky I got to see him and Frank Bello at Sam Ash.
^ what the guy above said. I think megadeth has done a really great job of mixing the bass in relation to the other instruments. Cant think of one album that it was bad (not including the atrocious remasters, they were akin to earrape imo). Countdown to extinction though was definitely my favorite in terms of his volume. It was so loud and he was playing some fucking amazing ass riffs, but it wasnt drowning out anything. I also like their old albums, like rip and backwards, cuz he sounded almost like a 3rd guitar that was also bass. Love it
Best bass player in metal. Some guys may be more "skilled," but he knows melodies and songwriting. His leads rule: Peace Sells and Dawn Patrol. Can't beat it.
in heaven god didn't think the world was ready for the best bass player in the universe so he split him into two bassists. In the first named cliff burton he put the best bassists solo skills. In the second named dave ellefson he put the best bassists rhythm and melody techniques.
Maybe He is not super ultra bassist on the planet but He's style so clean and clear It's very same as studio recording back in the days He was at 20's when It was recording now, He's 50 and still rock'n roll on it.
why people pick megadeth over metallica or metallica over megadeth is over my head they are both the GODS of metal And have strong connections, megadeth wouldnt be around without metallica so, dont pick sides they are both great bands

He's sort of like Cliff Burton on the bass but without the extra ability to write interesting things like the intro to Damage Inc.

Dave Ellefson is seriously underrated. There are a loads of fantastic runs throughout his career in Megadeth.
