Bro... You are doing a fabulous job bby making contents on Rex Brown.... He richly deserves and he will go down in history as one top 8 greatest bass guitarists of all time... Bass is not about playing with finger or slapping or thumbing.. It's about creating and making music...
One sign of a great bassist is when a lone guitarist can step out and ake a solo with no backing rhythm track and it doesn't sound like the heaviness disappeared. Rex delivered this like no other. Tim from RATM is another example of this. Many bands record a rhythm track of guitar for this purpose in the studio then when you see them live they sound weak during every guitar solo. Pantera did not have this problem because Rex knew how to craft great bass lines that traveled between the drums and guitar riff while having the heavy crushing tone that held the low end down while having a grinding mid range.
I don't think Rex is underrated. Anyone who knows their Pantera knows that he is a true monster on the bass. Huge tone, lines mean AF and a tight, TIGHT player. Gotta put on some tunes now😎
Man, you guys really don't aspire to be very good at bass huh? :/ I'm reconsidering writing metal music, I would never influence people to do as little as possible
@@dankhill6851 It's very easy for the bassist to overplay and step all over the tune. The greats know when to step out with the drums and push the rhythm or stay in the background and carry the song. Rex liked to compliment the vocals as well with his bass playing, you can hear it in songs like This Love and Floods. Not every bassist needs to play like Jaco.

I can't wrap my head around the change. Because when asked how he thought about Warwick's after being endorsed he went "It joyous it's fucking amazing" lol.
Thank you for your devotion to this special instrument, the Bass! If you are up for the task, I recommend doing a Steve DiGiorgio video. An amazing bass player that have contributed to amazing bass lines in bands like Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, Testament, Quo Vadis, etc, etc. Great videos and research!
Thanks for another informative video. Regarding tunings, it's not always +40 cents like Rex was quoted, it could be +/- 40 or 50 or 25/30/whatever cents. Right now there are many of their songs with isolated instrument tracks available (full Vulgar and Trendkill albums and couple more songs as well) where one can easily determine the tuning in software like Transcribe. For example, Mouth for War is in E -40 cents, Hostile is E -50 cents (right "between" E and Eb), This Love (this is where he used the mentioned piccolo-stringed bass, it's even on separate track) is Eb +30, etc. I have no idea why he said "we always used Drop D", because they used E, Eb, D, C# for sure, not to mention going super low on Underground in America and Sandblasted Skin. And looking at how he plays certain D tuned songs, it looks like not just one string is 'dropped', but all strings are tuned down.
Love this. I always though his bass tone on Far Beyond Driven is one of the best ever. I'd like to suggest Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse for a future video. Great stuff as always!
Great video. I would still really love to see Paul Gray. That said I'd also really love to see Alex Webster, Rob Trujillo (to complete the Metallica trifecta), Frank Bello, and Ryan Martinie.
Great suggestions Kevin, I think all of them are in the top 10 suggestions. And I totally agree with you. I need to get the Metallica trilogy complete!
I believe that tuning printed on the back of his bass that you weren't sure of was tuned to something like G# standard it seems Low to high G# C# F# B E
Most likely, someone did ask about Dime G# tuning so it could match that. Googling it brings up a lot of 7 string tunings, that's interesting. Thanks Joseph.
I know a lot of people have said that they tuned down a quarter step. And it's weird to me to see him confirm that because I swear in an interview, Dime said that (I think it was for Cowboys) the guitar was slightly out of tune and he left it that way because it was more rock n roll than to make it perfect. He mentioned the intro to Iron Man being the same.

Excellent job, as always
Thanks Zephirot, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video Alfie, as always. Would be lovely to see Chris Squire covered in the next videos.
Thanks Aline! Glad you enjoyed it. Chris is a classic, I'll see what I can do!
Wow, I thought I loved everything bass. Please carry on kind sir! Subbed and eagerly waiting.
Thanks Jon, I appreciate that sub! Is there a bass player you'd like to see?
@@WhichBass I gave it some thought. Tony Levin for his different tones and applications of the bass. Or Pino Palladino because he’s hard not to love.
Classic suggestions, I'll see what I can do!
i hope you get more subs man you deserve it
Thanks Cruhg, that's kind of you to say so, I appreciate that.
Very talented underrafed Bass Player 100%
I bought a SVT4-PRO and a PR4x10HLF back in 2004 and still have it. That amp is a monster. I play an early 2000s Zon Sonus (Bartolini pickups, back before they were put in cheap stuff) through it.
That sounds like a beast of a rig, nice job!
@@WhichBass It is. A buddy that had a SVT4 with a SVT8x10he and he was blown away by how the PR4x10hlf sounded.
Loved the video!! Love the Content but you gotta finish the metallica trio with Robert trujillos bass rig. Keep up the badass work
Yes yes yes I know! It's bugging me too. I need to finish the trio! I'll get there one day. Thanks Dankis ;)
Shhhhiiiiii. Been subbed for the longest, homie.
13% represent! Thanks GM!
My 1st bass amp was an Acoustic 370, with an old Mitchell Sand Cab, I was 12 I had no idea what I had. Those Randall amps are really close.
Excellent A.W...keep thumpin..
Mr Fender J, great to see you again, thanks for dropping by.
Wow..this was an awwweesome channel.and a greaaaat video of one of my favourite bassist ever(alongside Steve Harris ;) !!Im a drummer at heart..but also do play the bass when i get the oppurtunity..so this channel may have gotten me onto the path of getting another bass .Thank you ..and of course >>Subbed :) Greetings from Norway ,Stefan :)
Hey Stefan, drummers are bassists best friends! You're welcome here dude. Glad you enjoyed the video. If you do get a bass show me what you got! Tweet me @AlfieWilliamsUK I'd love to see.
Tell Norway I said Hello!
Love Rex's quote about Warwick's.
I can't wrap my head around the change. Because when asked how he thought about Warwick's after being endorsed he went "It joyous it's fucking amazing" lol.
They paid me an enormous amount of $$.. Joke
Subbed. Love Rex’s playing. Love Pantera.
Thanks for the sub Nick, glad to have you watching.
Rex just released a new signature thunderbird bass with Gibson!
I know! I made a video about it!
Bass shown at 2:49 is a Gibson G3, not a Grabber.
Awesome vid, so cool. Suggestion for next time: Chris Squire
Chris Squire
Thanks Maxwell, glad you enjoyed it. Chris Squire would be a great one.
Great episode. Alex Webster would be very interesting.
Great suggestion Richard, thanks for watching.
Rex, Paul Gray and Twiggy are why I started playing bass
That's a great starting point!
Thanks Philisteum, glad to have you watching. Steve is a great suggestion, I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for the insight Gilassp, that's really interesting. It all sounds so convoluted. I just keep my bass in one tuning ... Keeps it simple XD
Excellent work, love your videos!
Thanks Stephan! My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it.
Suggestions
Steve digorgio, Alex Webster, john entwistle, John myung, billy Sheehan
Billy Sheehan made a video today and shows a lot of his basses it on the channel Scott's bass lessons
I like it Ethan, some classics in there too.
If you’d like to know the Real Story, I’m up for a interview!! PM me on Twitter:: REJASFROMTEJAS
Hey Rex, that sounds brilliant! I'll be in touch!
Love this. I always though his bass tone on Far Beyond Driven is one of the best ever. I'd like to suggest Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse for a future video. Great stuff as always!
Thanks David, Alex Webster is second place in my list. Watch this space!
Thank you for this content
Thank you for this comment Edgar! Glad you enjoyed it.
Please Do Robert Trujillo, Nikki Sixx And John Myung.
Great suggestions GM, thanks.
When many were saying "metal is dead" Pantera came into the scene to prove them wrong. It really pisses me off how things ended for this awesome band.
Yeeeahhh you are back:)
Sorry for the wait Heinrich, had some stuff to sort out. But I'm here! That's all that matters.
Can you do a program on Dan lilkner???
Great suggestion thanks Johnny!
I believe that tuning printed on the back of his bass that you weren't sure of was tuned to something like G# standard it seems
Low to high G# C# F# B E
Most likely, someone did ask about Dime G# tuning so it could match that. Googling it brings up a lot of 7 string tunings, that's interesting. Thanks Joseph.
I'm subbed. Your videos are amazing!
Glad to have you Mouth Breather!
What about Paul Grey of Slipknot???
Great suggestion, watch this space Igor.
