PSA Is Deactivating Cleaned Cards😱 | 2024 Heritage Review

- PSA is cracking down on certain cleaning methods. Kurts Card Care had his order deactivated for soaking and cleaning a 1953 Jackie Robinson. In this video we share our thoughts on this situation and what we think should happen. In this video we also break down all things 2024 Heritage. 2024 Heritage is a very tough product to break into as a newcomer, but it can be one of the most enjoyable rips. The Spitballin' team will share their favorite cards to look for and what to avoid.

Best comment on the internet today!!! 100% right.
epic LOL!! lets be honest, we all want to grow up to be like Kurt one day.
Truth! 🤣
So true! And the Good Fella's analogy was to a tee!
I know most people now don't want to collect, touch, or even look at their cards but for me a big appeal of vintage cards is the way they age. The feel, smell, and deterioration.
Chris here - I have to say, the few times I’ve opened an older box (like 87 topps, or 89 donruss) the smell
Immediately takes me back to my childhood. The brain activation is immediate. It’s amazing!
I am vintage collector and heritage is my favorite modern set. I love sorting cards after opening packs and heritage gives me a lot of fun looking for any of the variations.
Chris here - I can definitely understand that. Like I said, I bet it looks great in binders.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I’ve been collecting for about 45 years ,I don’t want to see alternating cards such as cutting or color filling ..but if you can clean cards without damaging the card I don’t think that should be frowned upon..I’ve started getting into comics in the last ten years and what guys do on there is great with pressing and cleaning .they make comics look great and do really change or alter the original comic..
Jeff here: totally agree. Thanks for commenting!
Chris here - and yeah, jeff and I pretty much agree with you here. Adding color and trimming - No.
I think we needed a moment of silence at the beginning of the video for the absence of Philmington here. It just doesn’t seem right, without him.
Chris here - to be fair, we ONLY get moments of silence when @philmington ISN’T here!
Where the hell is Phil? You give these kids an inch they take a mile....
Hahaha - you damn right!
We all miss Phil :(
So true~~!! When the master is away, the kids shall play.
Great topic, and ya, I’m that 60’s collector that rips a lot of Heritage. I have also stashed many cases and hundreds of various boxes/Packs of this stuff. I think the value of this annual set decreases each year because of larger print runs. But they seem to keep it fun because of adding new surprises such as the flip stocks, purple refractors, and new sub sets. But like Scottie said, the ROI is not there, it’s just fun. Still, my biggest card of ripping hundreds and hundreds of packs is a dual red auto of Cepeda & Brock from the 68 style. Also have some blood splatters from the same set, a random Beatles card and boxes of refractors, etc from the early years. Anyway, thanks again guys for a great show. Also loved the variation part of the show.
That dual auto sounds great!
Chris here - yeah it’s not a financially responsible rip, but it’s fun to see the cards with retro designs.
Better to just grab the red ink singles for sure.
Thanks for watching, John!
Print marks usually streak the ink so when you see “marks” streaking on a card it usually from the collating belts leaving built up material that sometimes can be buffed out with a polishing cloth unless the belts have indented scratches in the card . That’s a result of bad maintenance on the machine from changing out belts on a scheduled preventative maintenance program.
Thanks for the info! Not hard to imagine the topps printers need to be serviced more!
The heritage refractors this season are exceptional. They preserve the color and provenance of the original card while bringing the card into the present with the chrome refractor finish. Come high number, I would love to see a Chourio/Yount dual auto, considering their similarities as young debut prospects.
I agree. The chrome refractors look awesome!
Chourio/Yount Dual! 😳😍
I like/collect vintage and modern, and really enjoy heritage every year- especially the RRAs!
The autos really look great this year with that iconic 75 design. Especially the reds!
Another great episode. Always a good day when you get to hear some passionate baseball card collectors chopping it up
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for the great Heritage primer, gents! My son just got a 2024 hobby box for his birthday yesterday, look forward to seeing what he pulls!
Anything decent?
Hey guys! Love the podcast! I actually pulled a 2023 Topps Heritage Real One Red Ink Auto of Nolan Gorman this past summer here in CO. The color match is glorious and I think it’s /74. The SN is actually handwritten on the card.
Chris here - amazing pull!!! Congrats
Great pull! And love the handwritten numbers on the red inks, a very cool touch.
Sorry for the double comments: Heritage has done the labels, color, B&W, Image, Nickname etc for many many years. Tpot...it's not confusing at all, they always label in the same spot for any said year. And flip stock you can see it in hand, it stands out and is hard to miss, what sucks is ebay sellers posting cards in penny sleeves and top loaders, so those shown examples on ebay were hard to see. That should be an ebay requirement. If it's not in a slab, you MUST post a photo of a raw card. Another rant another episode/topic maybe.
Chris here - I like that as an eBay rule. It’s impossible to see the surfaces of chrome cards on most eBay listings. Usually intentionally.
Thanks for commenting!
@@SpitballinCards Agree 100%. I saved time and have a saved text so I can just paste it when I see a card I like. Asking for a couple pics out of the plastic and any surface or corner issue to be noted? If they reply, they are usually worth dealing with.
@@TheCardDeal This is smart, I may have to adopt this method.
Haha. Glad Chris brought up the Pearl Harbor comparison. Not that I was offended by any means, but definitely caught me off guard.
Yeah... Not my best analogy 🤣. I was going for the "sleeping giant" quote which made the us get involved in WWII. Meaning the black wembanyama was the event that got PSA into looking at altered cards more seriously. Thanks for watching Keith!!
@@scottiebcards2354 I wondered why you went the Pearl Harbor route as well when talking cards 🤣 I think the saying “don’t poke the bear” would’ve sufficed lol
BTK was very passionate about his work as well, lol
Heritage should copy what they did with Flagship and simplify the SP's, and make it nearly impossible to miss.
I would not be surprised if they did something similar to that over the next year or two!
Haha - lots of misplaced passion we’ll call it.
Anyone on social media who said is this OK or not is just lazy and a noisemaker in the hobby. PSA has said NO on the website for a very long time. But no one expects anyone to do real research or journalism.
I will add this....I think the card will be deactivated, but not a PSA account. A lot of people buy/sell and aquire cards in many different ways. So not sure how that will play itself out. Good show fellas ✌🏽⚾️🇺🇸
PSA says no, but it seems like they don’t want to actually police the card waxing/polishing - because MANY hobbyists are using it. Just not publicizing it.
Thanks for watching!
PSA definitely has a stance, but they also have a financial interest in letting a lot of things go, so it’s a strange situation all around. The public nature of the soaked Jackie seems to have forced their hand, but I can’t see them being too proactive on the deactivating front when it comes to waxed/wiped cards.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sassy Scott is back!!
😂😂
That’s me, T-Pot! I’m a primarily vintage collector who only collects modern heritage.
Awesome! Thanks for replying! I figured that had to be a thing!
Chris here - yes! We knew it had to have caught on. Thanks for letting us know!
That's ridiculous in my opinion, Hydrating a card is not alteration. Trimming, recoloring , and adding stock are all alterations. Hydrating is not.
Chris here - I think I agree with you. No coloring, no trimming. But cleaning and soaking, I’m ok with.
The Heritage collector base are some of the strongest collectors out there. Usually heritage collectors are on the older side prob bc of the set building mentality.
Totally agree! Heritage collectors are some of the best in the hobby.
And add that to the nostalgia factor of the historical Topps designs - definitely pulls older collectors in.
My favorite card content in the hobby
Thank you for watching. We appreciate it!
Thanks for the support!
Appreciate that! Thanks for the compliment!
Can anyone answer the simple question of how are they going to handle this when so many people buy raw cards?
Are you going to stop buying raw cards since you can't guarantee that they were not waxed? I realize it's fun to take a 'principled' stand publicly, but if you are still buying raw cards and submitting then it is almost guaranteed that you have submitted a cleaned card.
Chris here - there’s just no way of really really knowing for sure.
I’m sure I’ve bought waxed cards. I’ve probably bought cards that were cracked out of slabs, waved but not really improved and then sold again raw.
It’s a cycle. And it’s too more celery to think for even a moment that you’ve avoided it, or will be able to avoid it.
Honestly, I’m fine with it. It’s part of the hobby.
Thanks for watching!
@@SpitballinCards Thanks for the response Chris! When one of the biggest pipelines for $$$ is flipping raw to graded, it's disingenuous/delusional to pretend that you have the HIGH GROUND when really it's just turning a blind eye. If you aren't submitting only pack fresh cards that you ripped, you're part of the "problem".
And to be clear, that is directed at all the sanctimonious goofballs who keep complaining yet benefiting off the modern market. If you are buying raw cards, you're the beneficiary of the thing that you claim to hate. No way around it.
I'm that (a) vintage guy that hoards the red inks..... great convo on the heritage line guys.... THUMBS UP! Heritage is chalk full of variety in many cases still being digested by the hobby... I buy every gold refractor /5 and Red Ink RC I can find.....
You that guy with the Heritage Mookie Red Ink RC PSA 10 right? I saw your stuff on Chris Sewall's High Roller's episode from Chantilly last week .... You have a splendid array of vintage and modern ~ Great eye my friend. Truly a pleasure watching that episode.
Chris here - sound alike you’re targeting exactly the best stuff!!
I definitely want to add more red inks to my collection.
They generally put the flipstock in back to front in the pack. At least they do that with Heritage minor league. Otherwise, the best way is the feel test rather than the magnifying glass code test. It's the braille of the baseball hobby.
Haha - braille of the hobby!
flip stock: the feel test is absolutely right! Just impossible to tell on eBay. Thanks for commenting!
This is the tempest in the tea pots 🍲🍲🍲
I would like to see a comparison between the grade values. How much more is a one grade difference in vintage and modern cards? Love the videos! My favorite
Chris here - you can check sales data on market movers, eBay sold listings and the website 130point.com.
The jump from a 9 to a 10 is significant.
Thanks for watching!
How would soaking be any different than placing the card in a high humidity type chamber…. Same thing. Feels like an over reach by PSA because their feelings got hurt. Add color or trim is a no go, the other stuff doesn’t bother me…
Before 2024. Throwbacks usually had a print run of about 15 copies.
Thank you for confirming that! I thought it might have been lower.
Wow - incredibly rare. Thanks for the info!
I used to love heritage. I just can’t buy it anymore. The last 3 years almost every box I have opened most of the cards were heavily dinged up or had chipping. Ripped 4 blasters last week. Didn’t pull a single numbered card and the few big rookies I pulled had severe damage
Speaking of the numbering going up by 1 every year. What happens to topps flagship black when it reaches 76? Will we have black and independence day cards both numbered to 76?
I would guess so, yes! in 2011 the Hope Diamond was /60 and the black was /60. I think the same would hold true for the /76. Thanks for watching!
I don’t see why not!
Yes! That will be a great pairing for the rookies that year.
Those base cards that get decertified can just be cracked out and resubbed right? Only if PSA starts picking them up without being told beforehand will anything have changed. Otherwise just assume that thousands of cards are being graded every day after having had the Kurt treatment.
They can be cracked and resubbed - although my experience with the new slabs is that they are a tough crack.
It’s possible with some detailed imaging, PSA could identify the Jackie card, but that seems unlikely.
Of course, I agree with your assumption and it doesn’t bother me one but.
There’s a basketball card that PSA graded that’s still active it was also a Kurt’s card I wonder if PSA will do something about that one.
Chris here - I highly doubt it unless Kurt publicizes what he did to it. Specifically.
@@SpitballinCards It’s crazy if money wasn’t the motive to grade I wonder if PSA would have just let theses grades stand.
@@fliplife67I think they only deactivated the cards that were subbed with the Jackie Robinson. No proof any other subs were altered.
I've been using Kurt's card care on thousands of cards (all modern) for over a year. I've also graded around 150+ with SGC and PSA. I've never been rejected. I'm 100% fine with others using it. Ty's opinion is basically mine.
That's the problem
Your opinion is irrelevant. If PSA disavows using Kurt’s juice, then send your cards elsewhere.
@@VinnyVagus1 his opinion isnt irrelevant, he pays for their service and so does anyone else that submits to them. We can choose NOT to. You can hire a private appraiser, someone with credentials. I actually pulled a Matt McLain Gold Refractor #1/5 this year. I was super pumped!
Nice pull! Can’t imagine seeing a gold pop out in one of my packs! 😮
Kurt got what he deserved imho. That said if this is going to be acceptable later on then PSA needs to create a qualified grade slab like CGC does on comic books.
If you’re going to do this stuff, it’s just Marte not to publicize specific cards like that. Duh.
Thanks for watching!
Great video Gents. I love Heritage. In addition to what you talked about, the Image variations and Chrome (/999) are great cards for affortable prices. And of course those Real One Autos are awesome. I also don't think people realize that Topps makes less Heritage than both Bowman and Flagship. And to answer your question, the Vintage guys I know prefer to open a box of Heritage pretty much over anything else. Because this is the 75 set (and the year i was born) I have committed to try and complete this set. Until next time....
Chris here - when you say “complete the set,” how far are you going?
All the image variations? Just the base set?
Base set with short prints. That is good for me

You are correct! 2 years in between!
All the Kurt’s guys will just focus on Beckett or SGC. I think Beckett should make a comeback, as its quality grading is superior.
Jeff here: would love to see Beckett make a return to grading relevancy. Hopefully they are serious about upgrading their online submission procedures and customer service. The name still has a lot of brand equity, would hate to see that completely wasted.
My guy - PSA cannot detect if you clean a card.
The reason he posted it was because he was probably under the impression it wasnt a problem since the 1/1 wemby that went through a similar process that recently got a psa10, even though they knew it got the kurtscard care service beforehand. So why does that card stand yet this doesn't? It's total bullshit and a sham , videos have been out forever about this process and now all the sudden its a problem? Soaking and cleaning isn't alteration , it's cleaning no different than how people pay for old art to be cleaned for restoration to increase its value / longevity. Dudes not trimming cards or doing anything shady , he's just cleaning cardboard and plastic. 🤦
Chris here - I hear the set restoration comparison a lot.
And I get it. There probably need to be limits but I’m not deciding where they are.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the perspective!
You know how lawyers will seek out test cases to get before courts to try and set precedent?
This is that. Boomers with shaky hands have been mad since the hobby blew up - COMPS is a nasty word to them. They did this purposefully to try and force PSA to make a statement. Which worked. But I am not sure that they realize this was entirely performative and completely unenforceable. I will clean my cards and submit them to PSA all day until they prove that they can detect it.
They are the suckers in this whole thing. Nothing has changed.
I asked this on the last blabbin video, but I’ll ask here too. Chris when you say Yordan Alvarez’s “true” gold refractor, you’re talking about the flagship image non auto gold refractor right? Where he’s in orange? I noticed he has an SP, an auto gold, and regular gold. And while I’m at it, do you think 2020 stuff is overprinted and it hurts the top line stuff like Black parallels and gold refractors from that year?Thanks-Bravetrain13
Hey man, sorry if I didn’t get back to you on the blabbin channel.
Yes, when I say Yordan’s true gold refractor, I mean his base image gold - not the gold wave and not the sp gold refractor.
There was absolutely a ton of product in 2020 but I don’t think it hurts the high end parallels like you mentioned - topps blacks, SSP, etc.
if anything it makes them harder to find.
@@SpitballinCards oh no man, it’s not that you didn’t get back to me. I just asked on your blabbin video yesterday. I didn’t know where else to ask until this video came out. Really appreciate the response
Jeff here: agreed that the spike in print runs over the last few years does NOT hurt the top parallels (flagship black, especially), it may make them more sought out.
I DO worry that the proliferation of sets (so many Topps Chrome varieties for instance) make some of the parallels harder to sift through. As we’ve talked about on the Blabbin’ ‘Bout Slabbin’ channel, there are now so many Chrome golds that it is confusing and watered down. For those, I would try hard to stick to the original, main Topps Chrome golds.
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin Appreciate the in depth response Jeff. I always wondered if the saturation may affect the top-end stuff. Good to know it doesn’t. It just seems like Yordan’s stuff is a lot less in price than other guys with similar talent. He is a DH tho.
@@Bravetrain13 our theory is that he needs that fits fully healthy monster season for his cards to really move. We shall see
If there is a definitive way to tell it's cleaned, sure. I just haven't seen exactly how you can tell a card is cleaned. Trimming is easy because there is a very small tolerance to the card's dimensions. IMO, the PSA announcement is just a PR move. It's in their best interest to make an outward announcement when something like this comes to light. Vintage is the number one reason grading is as popular as it is. In reality, how on Earth can they train the hundreds of random graders how to subjectively determine if a card has been cleaned?
Jeff here: agree with this take. The public nature of the Jackie video forced PSA’s hand. But I don’t think they have the capability (or desire, frankly) to police this issue on a large scale.
I don’t see a problem removing unwanted things that were added to cards. The key here is the removal of foreign substances. If I spill coffee on my card & I can then remove the coffee then I don’t see the problem at all. Dirt, gum, mold, etc. All should be fair game. As long as nothing remains on the card. Also, returning an edge & corner to its original state should be fair game.
Whats worth more the stadium club rainbow foil 1/1 Auto OR the stadium club chrome superfractor 1/1 with No Auto.
Chris here - without looking up comps I’d have to say the auto is the more valuable card. People always want autos!
But isn’t the rainbow foil auto #/10?
Even so, I think it would very close with the Superfractor non auto. I’d probably lean auto myself.
@@SpitballinCards I agree. I got the 2020 Stadium Club Timmy 1/1 Auto. I thought it was rainbow foil cause I seen t pot had the same card of different player graded and it says rainbow foil 1/1 on psa holder..And it goes from gold to rainbow as you rotate it.
Are these experts able to confirm that PSA has never certified a counterfeit copy of a big card like a 1986 Jordan or 1952 Mantle? It seems like todays technology should be able to handle a cardboard photo of something made 40 or 70 years ago with imperceptible accuracy.
Chris here - this is where PSA’s guarantee comes in to play. If it’s proven that they have graded a fake card, they’ll buy it back from the owner at current market value (if the real card).
The real question is how many vintage cards were restored 30, 40 and 50 years ago. Do we really believe that ANY psa 9 or 10 of a card from the 70's and before wasn't restored. A piece of cardboard that retained its original color and shine for 50 or 60 or more years. In the 1980's guys bought collections with 5000 cards or more. We dont think that someone even if for benevolent reasons didnt experiment on commons before trying their method on the better names. It would be naive to think that less than half of all cards in 8 or higher holders weren't restored as much as 30 or 40 years ago. Some have been repeatedly conserved. Please. Gimme a break. Everything has been restored. EVERYTHING.
Chris here - I tend to agree with you. Some
Slabbed vintage cards look like they just came
Out of packs yesterday!

Would love to get some opinions on Rookie Red inks vs Bowman chrome refractor autos /499. They have practically the same value, Last Acuna red ink PSA 10 sold for $4,300, last Acuna refractor /499 sold for $4,500. For me I’d rather have red ink and it’s not close. What are your thoughts?
Id go red ink every time!
Chris here - this is a GREAT would you rather!
The bowman chrome refractor obviously came first but the red ink has fewer copies and fewer autos in general with that image.
This one is tough to separate. Like I said, I think the heritage red inks have the chance to really separate themselves from the other ROOKIE autos, but can they compete with bowman first autos???

And of that 50% that claims to not wax their cards, I bet at least half would gladly pay someone to do it for them. The same way people are too scared to crack slabs. When you're old and shaky, it probably seems really, really scary.

Heritage is awful price wise for us . In Australia our local LCS has them at $165AUD which is about $107 USD and way too much for a product which is almost guaranteed to have no more than $10 worth of hits in there - the relic and the variations of non rookies or dud rookies. At $60 USD it's fine. At $110USD it's an easy pass.

@@SpitballinCards Yes, mostly more expensive for American sports.

a very good point was made in geoff's video, psa is responsible for replacement if the juice messes up the card in a decade or what ever. psa could stand to lose a ton if all these 10s turn into 7s and 8s over time 😂

Get off your high horse and grade the card fairly! If you can't tell it didn't happen! So why did the 1/1 Wemby that went from a 9 to a 10 get decertified? The reason is they don't have a video showing what was done to it because THEY CAN'T TELL!!! This is not altering a card! Just my opinion!
Hard to argue with this perspective. While I understand the public nature of the video making PSA feel like they have to do something, it’s a bit disingenuous on their part. They simply cannot tell (nor do I think they really want to…) if the majority of these “alterations” take place.
It’s going to be interesting to watch going forward…
I bought a $50 box of heritage and every single card had rough edges top and bottom. Returned it to tops, received another box same thing, returned that box, third box same thing. Absolutely horrible quality control. I will never buy heritage wax again. Sham I like heritage
Maybe it was trying to be too much like older cards! 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
It can happen with paper cards.
Any decent “hits” in those 3 boxes?
@SpitballinCards no hits, which is what it is, but even if there was a hit it would have graded a 5 or 6 so I'm glad there wasn't a hit.
"Cleaned" cards are altered cards.
PSA is hypocritical in their attitude because they have not deactivated the 1/1 Wemby!!!
Fair point!
1. When a guy is purposefully buying graded cards labeled altered, then he uses his kit and resbumitting it, and it comes back a 6.
What's the purpose of that outside of fooling everyone and making more money? The jackie isn't the only card. Theres dozens if not hundreds of cards now out there labeled as high grades that have been altered. I respect peoples opinions, but he is terrible for sports cards.
It would be a different story if he was transparent about altering cards to the grading companies, but why do that? When you can fool them and make more money.
Imagine saving up for months if not years for a 1953 mantle in a 7. Just to find out the card has been altered. Its been manipulated to soak as much money as possible out of someone.
What a joke.
Bingo 🎯
I personally agree with you. I am not a fan of it.
Great points - although I think you are underselling the numbers, I bet there are THOUSANDS of vintage cards in slabs that have been altered.
While the methods may have gotten more advanced (and publicized), alterations like trimming, recoloring, etc., have been going on for decades. And no doubt many of them escaped PSA’s “detection” techniques over the years.
I would be hesitant to buy any vintage cards in slabs if I was concerned with them being altered.
@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin you're quite right. Thousands are more than likely the more accurate number, which makes it so much worse.
I love the faux altruism. Kurt is just trying to make more money, but we all spend thousands of dollars on cards just for their... intrinsic value? Come on man. Your hypothetical is nonsensical because unless you can prove otherwise, no one, including the grading companies, can detect if a card has been 'altered'. If you feel this strongly about it, I hope you are not buying any raw cards.
any restoration/alteration is gross -- the same people that love this stuff I guarantee are the same people that love McGwire/Bonds/Sosa
Good for PSA! Don't like that "cleaning" crap. I don't even get why people grade comics.
What exactly do you think PSA accomplished with this? And while I've never owned a comic book, I'm going to assume people grade comics because they 1) like them and 2) want to preserve their value. Stop gatekeeping - we spend thousands of dollars on cardboard.
Kurt is driven by greed.
He's running a business? Are you one of those people who pretends that every card they buy is for their PC and you don't care at all if they end up being worth zero?
BEST. CONTENT. ON. RUclips.
Thanks brother! Appreciate the support 💪🏼
Thank you, Dustin!!
I'd be scared if I owned the 1 of 1 wemby😅
I’d have sold that baby immediately!!
