  • The 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout rookie card is the most iconic modern dat baseball card. It is known by all collectors regardless of sport that they collect, and at times even reaches audiences that do not collect. In this episode, the Spitballin' team dives into this particular card to share our thoughts on if this card should or should not be iconic.

Sorry for the missed edit around the 3 minute mark. It is usually up to Phil to catch our errors but he was not on this episode. Thanks for watching!
ALSO, CORRECTION - it’s the COGNAC Diamond parallels they are only available in 2011 Topps Update boxes.

Just because it’s not a super-expensive card, doesn’t mean it still can’t be iconic. It’s comparable to the 1989 UD Griffey, 1989 Hoops David Robinson and 1989 Score Barry Sanders. Those cards came out at the height of the junk wax era, but anyone who collected during that era knows they were THE cards of that era to get. I think the 2011 Topps Update Trout card is the last great Base card just as the 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson was the last great standalone rookie card before Fleer and Donruss came out in 1981. I own a Trout PSA 9 and it doesn’t bother me that it probably won’t appreciate because of the pop count. Iconic is iconic. If pop count discounted a card from being iconic, then nobody would care about the 89 UD Griffey.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  7 месяцев назад +3

I think you nailed it here. It IS an iconic card and the comparison to Griffey is on point.
We just have to wait for the price on the Trout card to settle.
But I like the idea that the Trout rookie is the last great Topps base card. Good line!

Even though I'm a Blue Jays fan, Mike Trout is still my favourite player. He's built like a machine, however, he's also made of glass because everything breaks so easy. It's frustrating for fans that travel to Toronto, Ontario and see that he's day to day. We hope he's in the lineup during a 3-day weekend series, he's never playing.....

Even injuries, Mike Trout has made his mark in the sport & hobby.
2011 update is iconic. As a long term collector I look for those RC's that are limited. Especially now while his Market Value appears to go down is a great time to buy in my opinion.
I just seen today on Fanatics Collect (formerly PWCC) weekly auctiion that ends Sunday Trout's 2011 Bowman's Best Rookie Refractor #d /99 #BBP9 BGS 9.5 GEM MINT only at $52 so far. The base is only worth 100 or 2, but historically the Refractor/99 over $1k. Doesn't come up often. There are not many #d Trout Rookies unlike the current ultra modern RCs.

    • @SpitballinCards
      @SpitballinCards  Месяц назад

@@kellyschauer1175 Chris here - the problem with that 2011 Bowmans Best trout is it doesnt have the RC logo. So it’s not technically a rookie card.
PSA even labels it “prospects” on the slab. It’s kind of in that no man’s land of after the Bowman chrome first and before the RC.

In my opinion, The Trout RC is THE card to get (hobby influenced) but let's not forget some other names that have cards which are in deserving of the title "Iconic". some names that come to mind are Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, I mean, Trout is no doubt a great player and has a very notable resume but let's not forget the fact that the aforementioned players can be included into the discussion of Iconic.

Great video as always guys! Quick question, 6,200 PSA 10 out of approximately 60,000-70,000 print run, still very rare. As there are definitely more than 6,200 serious collectors chasing this card at any one time. Not to mention the flippers. So in my opinion I believe this card is now grossly undervalued especially if Trout remains healthy for any amount of time in the future and/or he eventually gets traded to a contender. Can you imagine Trout in the post season?
Sorry, here is my question…How does your view of this card change for a BGS 10 Pristine (240 total ish) copies and a BGS Pristine Black Label (27 total copies)? Does it then become Iconic? SuperGrail! Casket Card? Long term hold till Moon? Modern day Mantle Rookie? Just wondering. Thanks!

I also felt that the “base” cardboard stock was thinner / cheaper than 2022.
But I’ll give topps / fanatics credit in the sense the base versions of the cards are 🔥🔥🔥
Glad some of those truly beautiful cards (Mariano base ) are not SPs
😅 easier / less costly to enjoy putting on display

Its becoming iconic for the wrong reasons now. Trout has just been average for the past several years due to injury and its not likely that he's going to start playing 150 games a year. He's a HOF player but likely falls short of all time great. Its like he's Don Mattingly with a few mores of peak performance.
He'll always have his fans, are there 6,000 fans that will pay $1K for his PSA 10? I think folks will be just fine owning a PSA 8 or PSA 9.

Crazy to see how cheap it is now 😅 seems like no one wants to invest into an amazing player made out of glass

Chris here - every year he’s injured makes it harder and harder to remember how great he was.

Is the $500 price point y'all are talking about for a PSA 10?

Yes, a PSA 10 of the Trout which is hovering at about $1k now.

Not making a great case for Stadium Club. 😬

      No?
Chris here - and I think it’s worth a rip. No hobby boxes of any product are likely to give you a good return in value, but at least stadium club cards are beautiful and fun to see, talk about over a couple beers.

    Over-priced. Not over-rated.
As career milestones start becoming out of reach (3000 hits, 600 then 500 HRs, 2000 RBI, 2000 runs) the price will drop.

Chris here - I don’t think Ohtani was or will ever be a guy with huge round career numbers. But what he’s been able
To do (and will Hopefully do again) is truly historic.
2 unanimous MVP’s and three seasons (so far) of baseball we’ve never seen before is incredible. Hopefully there are more to come.
      Thanks for watching!

@@SpitballinCards thanks for the reply. My comment was in reference to Trout, but I agree re: Ohtani.

@@BaseballCFG oh my bad!! I should’ve realized that haha.
Re trout, yes you are dead on. Nobody in baseball needs a healthy season more than trout.
