The Real Reason Leaves Change Color In the Fall

  • You've probably heard that leaves of deciduous trees change color in autumn because they lose their green chlorophyll molecules, allowing the underlying yellow and orange pigments to shine through. However, this doesn’t explain why the leaves change color in the first place.

I'm confused about something though, Wouldn't the leaves they drop fall above their roots anyway? So as their break down the ground above them will be fertilised and when it rains (or the snow melts) they could re-absorb the nitrogen through their roots. I'm guessing they probably just do both things to recover the largest % of nutrients they can.

What I love about this channel is that it always tells you something you don't know. It takes a basic question like 'Why do leaves change color in the fall?' and gives you more than the grade-school textbook reason.
You expect some guy to come out and say 'THEY'RE ACTUALLY THAT COLOR ALL ALONG, DIDJA KNOW? DIDJA? HUH?'
But instead you actually learn something new.

Breaking down chlorophyll molecules little by little, in turn gives bright range of color during fall. They still do break down chlorophyll but the reason they do it is to protect itself while they transport their excess nutrients back to the trunk. Clever there (not that trees have brains, but have been programmed to do this).

That 50% recycling of resources in the leaves in fall is merely the direct recovery percentage. Once the leaves fall to the ground, break down into detritus, and are metabolized by the bacteria and fungal colonies at the base of the tree and along its roots, a tree recovers even more of its spent resources, indirectly!

Why would the tree need to take the nutrients from the leaves when surely they can absorb the nutrients back from the rotting leaves that have fallen off?

So, if one of those trees was put on the equator would they still loose the leaves? On the Equator there are no seasons, just perpetual summer.

Oh it may look like that's why they change and fall, but the *real* reason is they don't fall at all, they *jump* off before the squirrels can get 'em!

How does a tree 'know' when to start doing this? Is this a temperature sensor? Or like a measure of sunlight distribution?

Interesting. Wouldn't it be easier to just say the chlorophyll breaks down into molecules that don't absorb as many wavelengths and so those unabsorbed wavelengths end up getting reflected? I wonder what the relationship between the wavelength-scattering due to the changing angle of sunlight through the atmosphere and the color-changes in the leaves/chlorophyll is. It would be interesting to discover a chemical complementarity between scattering-angle and electron-wavelengths within the decaying chlorophyll. Autumn leaves would effectively turn out to be the photochemical analog of a colorful sunset where the colors also change due to the changing angle of the sun as it crosses the horizon.

But why do they begin to reabsorb the P and N into the branches etc. Is it due to the lower of light intensity or lowering temperatures?
