ABSOLUTELY - I saw this show "GODSPELL" back in the 70s - loved it. We need this song "Day by Day" to be released again - to bring people together again and to worship Jesus Christ. "Oh, dear Lord three things I pray, to see thee more clearly, to love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, Day by Day.
This song chokes the air out of my lungs, brings tears to my eyes and creates a large lump in my throat. I was introduced to Godspell in 1974 when a girlfriend of my cousin was in their high school production ~ I was 17 years old. During this song the cast came out into the audience and belted it out several times...I was mesmerized ~ still am....My physiologic reaction comes from believing that was the last time being innocent to the world...I miss it....
I love this song. It gives me chills when I hear it as do most of the songs in this musical. I grew up on Godspell & it such a huge memory of my childhood.
Proudly a teenager in the sixties, the summer/ decade of love! I'm blasting out this song with tears running down my cheeks. Prepare ye the way of the Lord!
This song was part of my moving from agnosticism to belief in God. I was agnostic from my teen years until about 30. From ages 24 to 30, I did 7 ten-day silent Buddhist meditation retreats. It cleared a lot of junk out of my system, and I started to have experiences of God, who wanted to interactive with me. But the Buddhist instructors had no concept of God, so when I went to them for advice on how to interact with God, they couldn’t help me at all and had nothing to say. In the ensuing months, out of the blue this song came into my head and I started singing it out loud to myself. I had never seen Godspell and didn’t even know it was from that. I must have heard it a few times when I was young maybe on the radio or playing at someone’s house. But coming to my mind as it did, it was kind of my first praise or worship song as a new believer. And more importantly, it helped move me forward because it so perfectly encapsulated what intuitively felt like were the three key things I needed to do. See God more clearly, love God more and follow God. It also was my first prayer as a believer. In the months that followed, I started going to church once a month, and eventually weekly. It took about three more years until I started having experiences of Jesus, and connecting with him. And it’s gotten deeper and better from there. This song coming to me was about 22 years ago, and just now did I discover that the song is from Godspell. I saw a RUclips interview of Sara Bareillis on the Craig Ferguson talk show (a very old clip), and decided to search RUclips for her song in JC Superstar. After listening to 2 versions of it, “Day by Day” popped up as one of the next 10 videos. I was excited and clicked right away, and discovered it’s from Godspell ... and saw the original plus this version. Now I really want to see the full play. I love the rendition in this video, and also the original. What an amazing song. Even more amazing is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Nothing better than them.
The lyrics for Day by Day are from the Prayer of St. Richard of Chichester. 12th Century... ❤ when Catholicism was breathtaking. His Feast day is April 3rd.
BRIEF COMMENT (5/19/2023): I STUMBLED ACROSS THSI VIDEO PURELY BY ACCIDENT A FEW DAYS AGO. WHAT YOUR WATCHING & LISTENING TO FOLKS IS MUSICAL HISTORY & A FANTASTIC RECORDING STUDIO SESSION BY THE CURRENT BROADWAY CAST OF "GODSPELL" , THIS IS POETRY FOR THE EARS & THE AUDIO/VISUAL RUclips LIBRARY! FANTASTIC INDEED! THIS CAST ROCKS THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG. GRANTED THE ORIGINAL SONG/CAST FROM 1973 IS, & ALWAYS BE ICONIC FOR THEIR TIME, BUT THIS IS A NEW SINGING GENERATION & THIS GROUP IPITOMIZES THE "NEW SOUND," MAYBE IT'S THE TECHNOLOGY, I DON'T KNOW, ALTHOUGH IT'S LIKELY. I PRAY EACH & EVERY MEMBER OF THIS CAST, AS TIME GOES ON STAYS ON THE STRAIGHT & NARROW & DOES MORE CD'S FOR US TO ENJOY. THAT YOUNG GAL COULD GIVE THE LATE KAREN CARPENTER A RUN FOR HER MONEY! HER VOICE IS TOP NOTCH/SMOOTH. SING ON GOOD PEOPLE-BROADWAY IS HONORED TO HAVE YOU ON THEIR MARQUEE! JUST AN AMAZING MUSICAL RENDITION OF A 1970'S CLASSIC BROADWAY SONG/PLAY. I PRAY FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUCCESS
I remember listening to this song as a little girl in 1973, when it was sung in GODspell. I was so moved and this version is beautiful as well. Much love and respect 😊❤️
I grew up seeing the play Godspell in the early 70's. This song was a hit in 72'. I got the chills every time I heard it. Dug it back up in 97'...still the same chills. Heard THIS version...and instead of just the same chills, I wept. those VOCALS...Beautiful!
Very well done. i actually remember hearing this song on the radio as a little kid. It got right under my skin even then. A beautiful melody and message
I still watch this about once a month. My son was the Judas in his school version of this. Goal to be on broadway. I still think the harmonies are so amazing. I think I have a pretty good ear but I can’t pick out a few. Incredible work. You guys are my musical hero’s.
What a beautiful song sung perfectly..... I've always loved this song, aver since watching the film GODSPELL in 1974 ---75 when I was a child...!!! Now I got into punk rock and SKA ( 2 TONE ) in 78 &79 and now I'm 53 yrs old and still a punk today 🍺😎👍 but I still love to watch GODSPELL , and have a good ol' singsong , day by day is still my favourite..☮️☯️❤️🐟 stay safe world and God bless you all 🇬🇭🇧🇴🇬🇭🌈🌈🌈🌈😊🐟🌈🌈
I am on record for appreciating this version some years back. Revisit it in hope for future of Humanity. Uplifting and generally forgotten 1973 AM Radio "pop hit" gem!
Love you Anna Marie Perez De Tagle .Such a crisp and clear and a beautiful voice. Articulate ,crisp and you are an absolute pleasure to listen to. If you happen to record solo i would love to hear about it. .Best wishes from Robert
This is a fantastic rendition of a classic it even Rivals the fifth Dimensions version which is the benchmark really very talented young singers here and you can see they put their all into it really serving the lord one of the most beautiful songs ever written and most meaningful as well.
Dude, this show is not about "serving the lord." It's a commercial musical, period. Stephen Schwartz (who wrote the show and is in this video) is the opposite of a christian.

@@polara01 Ok, except a fair number of people in this cast (and the director, Danny Goldstein, ... I've been friends with him since childhood - we went to theater camp together @ Stagedoor Manor) are also not christian. So they weren't putting their all into serving the lord; they were singng with feeling because it's their job and these songs - which most people who've been deeply involved in musical theater know well & have sung - are very catchy. @@polara01 Yes, you need say more, because what you said here doesn't relate at all to this discussion. A bunch of these cast members are Jewish, not christian, and have no interest in Jesus at all. Beautiful song. Very simple very easy to sing and remember. I was 5-6 years old when I heard it in the early 70’s on radio air play and now at 52, I still sing it to myself. Robin Lamont had the original beautiful version of it. Love this song! I still hear it once and a while on Sirius 70’s. Makes me smile❤
“Day by Day” was one of the warm-up tunes we played at the all-day orientation we presented for incoming freshmen and their parents at my university. I always liked it as a great way to kick things off for the families beginning a life-long transition.
I have the DVD of the 70's movie. One of its best features is the option to jump directly to any song. And I surely used that feature dozens and dozens of times!

This is a great cover of the song. The show first opened Off-Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has since been produced by multiple touring companies and in many revivals.
REALLY PLEASED they stuck to the philosphy where "Less is More", and held back from overdoing the vocals that so many modern singers think is necessary. Beautiful.
I do think the vocals are too showy for a song whose beauty is its simplicity. But Mr. Schwartz has gone all in on the “beat ‘em over the head with it” in the second half of his career, as the Godspell revival arrangements demonstrate. He did the same to Pippin.
We need a Godspell Revival 2024 to lift peoples spirits

WAtched it 100 times. Still makes me cry

This song never gets old. You could listen to it the whole day and still not get enough. 👍😎
It's stuck in my head, hard song to get rid of >
The idea for it comes from the 13th century - from Chichester in England, Saint Richard - God bless him (as He did)...
Anna Maria’s voice... I have no words. It’s so beautiful, and she does it so effortlessly
So proud of my niece, Anna Maria Perez De Tagle
awsome voice whats she doing these days??????????????
You have a lot of which to be proud, she has a beautiful voice.
She is fabulous!
marisse panlilio - She has a lovely voice! One of my faves as a kid.
Her talent comes from you. You must be a great singer as well.
I thank god that this is part of my childhood. Sometimes you need to cry and sometimes you need to to be happy. You gave me both.

The young girl doing the Robin Lamont part lead vocal is amazing. Great casting on the composer's part.
One thing that fascinates me is people who can sing perfectly in tune!
