- www.playbill.co... Playbill found composer Stephen Schwartz in the studio leading the Broadway revival troupe of "Godspell" in the recording of their cast album, complete with lyrical tweaks and new arrangements. With Anna Maria Perez de Tagle performing the signature song "Day By Day," the cast had their work cut out for them: Equity regulations dictated the entire album be completed in only one recording session! It was a long day, indeed.

We need a Godspell Revival 2024 to lift peoples spirits
This song chokes the air out of my lungs, brings tears to my eyes and creates a large lump in my throat. I was introduced to Godspell in 1974 when a girlfriend of my cousin was in their high school production ~ I was 17 years old. During this song the cast came out into the audience and belted it out several times...I was mesmerized ~ still am....My physiologic reaction comes from believing that was the last time being innocent to the world...I miss it....
❤😢
This song never gets old. You could listen to it the whole day and still not get enough. 👍😎
It's stuck in my head, hard song to get rid of >
The idea for it comes from the 13th century - from Chichester in England, Saint Richard - God bless him (as He did)...
This has to be one of the most perfect songs ever written. The vocals and harmonies fit the lyrics perfectly. it literally brings me to tears. :)
Agreed .. could you please pass me a tissue? :^)
too right
WAtched it 100 times. Still makes me cry
Happy tears.
I can't get thru 'All Good Gifts' without balling like a baby
Anna Maria’s voice... I have no words. It’s so beautiful, and she does it so effortlessly
So proud of my niece, Anna Maria Perez De Tagle
awsome voice whats she doing these days??????????????
You have a lot of which to be proud, she has a beautiful voice.
She is fabulous!
marisse panlilio - She has a lovely voice! One of my faves as a kid.
Her talent comes from you. You must be a great singer as well.
Human beings are really incredible animals. Capable of so many beautiful things. This song is one of those things
I love love love your comment!!!
Mmmm… I’ll take a friendly cat over most people. Seriously.
Her singing is just beautiful!
I love this song. It gives me chills when I hear it as do most of the songs in this musical. I grew up on Godspell & it such a huge memory of my childhood.
This song was part of my moving from agnosticism to belief in God. I was agnostic from my teen years until about 30. From ages 24 to 30, I did 7 ten-day silent Buddhist meditation retreats. It cleared a lot of junk out of my system, and I started to have experiences of God, who wanted to interactive with me. But the Buddhist instructors had no concept of God, so when I went to them for advice on how to interact with God, they couldn’t help me at all and had nothing to say. In the ensuing months, out of the blue this song came into my head and I started singing it out loud to myself. I had never seen Godspell and didn’t even know it was from that. I must have heard it a few times when I was young maybe on the radio or playing at someone’s house.
But coming to my mind as it did, it was kind of my first praise or worship song as a new believer. And more importantly, it helped move me forward because it so perfectly encapsulated what intuitively felt like were the three key things I needed to do. See God more clearly, love God more and follow God. It also was my first prayer as a believer. In the months that followed, I started going to church once a month, and eventually weekly. It took about three more years until I started having experiences of Jesus, and connecting with him. And it’s gotten deeper and better from there. This song coming to me was about 22 years ago, and just now did I discover that the song is from Godspell.
I saw a RUclips interview of Sara Bareillis on the Craig Ferguson talk show (a very old clip), and decided to search RUclips for her song in JC Superstar. After listening to 2 versions of it, “Day by Day” popped up as one of the next 10 videos. I was excited and clicked right away, and discovered it’s from Godspell ... and saw the original plus this version. Now I really want to see the full play. I love the rendition in this video, and also the original. What an amazing song. Even more amazing is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Nothing better than them.
The lyrics for Day by Day are from the Prayer of St. Richard of Chichester. 12th Century... ❤ when Catholicism was breathtaking. His Feast day is April 3rd.
I'm glad her music career at Camp Rock amounted to something
BRIEF COMMENT (5/19/2023): I STUMBLED ACROSS THSI VIDEO PURELY BY ACCIDENT A FEW DAYS AGO. WHAT YOUR WATCHING & LISTENING TO FOLKS IS MUSICAL HISTORY & A FANTASTIC RECORDING STUDIO SESSION BY THE CURRENT BROADWAY CAST OF "GODSPELL" , THIS IS POETRY FOR THE EARS & THE AUDIO/VISUAL RUclips LIBRARY! FANTASTIC INDEED! THIS CAST ROCKS THE HELL OUT OF THIS SONG. GRANTED THE ORIGINAL SONG/CAST FROM 1973 IS, & ALWAYS BE ICONIC FOR THEIR TIME, BUT THIS IS A NEW SINGING GENERATION & THIS GROUP IPITOMIZES THE "NEW SOUND," MAYBE IT'S THE TECHNOLOGY, I DON'T KNOW, ALTHOUGH IT'S LIKELY. I PRAY EACH & EVERY MEMBER OF THIS CAST, AS TIME GOES ON STAYS ON THE STRAIGHT & NARROW & DOES MORE CD'S FOR US TO ENJOY. THAT YOUNG GAL COULD GIVE THE LATE KAREN CARPENTER A RUN FOR HER MONEY! HER VOICE IS TOP NOTCH/SMOOTH. SING ON GOOD PEOPLE-BROADWAY IS HONORED TO HAVE YOU ON THEIR MARQUEE! JUST AN AMAZING MUSICAL RENDITION OF A 1970'S CLASSIC BROADWAY SONG/PLAY. I PRAY FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUCCESS
I remember listening to this song as a little girl in 1973, when it was sung in GODspell. I was so moved and this version is beautiful as well. Much love and respect 😊❤️
I never get tired of listening to this video! The back and forth between the lead vocals and the harmony vocals is outstanding!
Very well done. i actually remember hearing this song on the radio as a little kid. It got right under my skin even then. A beautiful melody and message
Proudly a teenager in the sixties, the summer/ decade of love! I'm blasting out this song with tears running down my cheeks. Prepare ye the way of the Lord!
Amen!
Literally obsessed with this song
The young girl doing the Robin Lamont part lead vocal is amazing. Great casting on the composer's part.
I remember this song of the 70s and still love it!
What a beautiful song sung perfectly..... I've always loved this song, aver since watching the film GODSPELL in 1974 ---75 when I was a child...!!! Now I got into punk rock and SKA ( 2 TONE ) in 78 &79 and now I'm 53 yrs old and still a punk today 🍺😎👍 but I still love to watch GODSPELL , and have a good ol' singsong , day by day is still my favourite..☮️☯️❤️🐟 stay safe world and God bless you all 🇬🇭🇧🇴🇬🇭🌈🌈🌈🌈😊🐟🌈🌈
what a masterpiece...love the whole Godspell soundtrack. Mr. Schwartz, you are a legend, sir.
I still watch this about once a month. My son was the Judas in his school version of this. Goal to be on broadway. I still think the harmonies are so amazing. I think I have a pretty good ear but I can’t pick out a few. Incredible work. You guys are my musical hero’s.
This song can and will speak through the holy spirit. Just feel it.
+Donald Jennings I couldn't agree more.
That is spot on
You nailed it sir. I could not agree more!
you are so right !!!!!!!!! i just found something tonight pull the vidoe for foo fighters the song congregation it also speakes of there awaking to the lord ;];];];];];];]
Amen
I am on record for appreciating this version some years back. Revisit it in hope for future of Humanity. Uplifting and generally forgotten 1973 AM Radio "pop hit" gem!
I used to love this song. Glad to hear this again in this pandemic
Love you Anna Marie Perez De Tagle .Such a crisp and clear and a beautiful voice. Articulate ,crisp and you are an absolute pleasure to listen to. If you happen to record solo i would love to hear about it. .Best wishes from Robert
One thing that fascinates me is people who can sing perfectly in tune!
i agree my man lmao
That's how I feel about people who can play a guitar. It's hard for me to believe that it is the same type of instrument that I own. Lol!
I saw the movie on TV in about 1975. I had no idea what it was about except that it was hippies singing these beautiful songs. I never let go of it.
She sings with a smile on her face and a joy in her heart…❤️
The vocals are heaven . A talented cast . Thanks for the cover version.
Just a fantastic bunch of singers!!
REALLY PLEASED they stuck to the philosphy where "Less is More", and held back from overdoing the vocals that so many modern singers think is necessary. Beautiful.
Do I detect a bit of irony in your comment?
I do think the vocals are too showy for a song whose beauty is its simplicity. But Mr. Schwartz has gone all in on the “beat ‘em over the head with it” in the second half of his career, as the Godspell revival arrangements demonstrate. He did the same to Pippin.
I could listen to Anna Maria Perez De Tagle sing all day. She has a heavenly voice.
Oh praise God! I'm cleaning my apt, and boom , this ding pops into my head and what a beautiful sound do I come to! Thank you
What a beautiful done song, Simple lyrics, They build to a climax, The 70's of coarse !
This is my prayer.
Wonderful comment!
The original is where it all started and has the heart. The follow up is fine and the performers talented but it still is version #2 despite the confetti being thrown. Mind you--fine and worth experiencing but the first version has that 70's charm and raw energy that always gets to me. "Day By Day' was a top 40 hit by Robin Lamont and Victor Garber and Joanne Jonas were terrific.
Definitely has a more "21st century" sound, probably because of the recording technology. And not to take anything away from Anna Maria's excellent vocals, but for me, this will always Robin Lamont's song, and this play will always be a legacy of the 1970s.
Same her. R.L. Sand with more depth and strength. This is good. But doesn't compete to the movie version.
I grew up seeing the play Godspell in the early 70's. This song was a hit in 72'. I got the chills every time I heard it. Dug it back up in 97'...still the same chills. Heard THIS version...and instead of just the same chills, I wept. those VOCALS...Beautiful!
This is a fantastic rendition of a classic it even Rivals the fifth Dimensions version which is the benchmark really very talented young singers here and you can see they put their all into it really serving the lord one of the most beautiful songs ever written and most meaningful as well.
Dude, this show is not about "serving the lord." It's a commercial musical, period. Stephen Schwartz (who wrote the show and is in this video) is the opposite of a christian.
@@sparklemotion101ni3 anybody can interpret music in any way they want and that's how I choose to interpret it regardless of who wrote it or what the original intent is.
@@sparklemotion101ni3 there are a lot of things in this world that the meaning isn't exactly what you would think it would be intended for. For instance, the "Patriot Act"... need I say more?
@@polara01 Ok, except a fair number of people in this cast (and the director, Danny Goldstein, ... I've been friends with him since childhood - we went to theater camp together @ Stagedoor Manor) are also not christian. So they weren't putting their all into serving the lord; they were singng with feeling because it's their job and these songs - which most people who've been deeply involved in musical theater know well & have sung - are very catchy. If you sing these songs, worship whatever you want, but please don't assume your feelings or thoughts are shared by everyone (or anyone) in this cast.
@@polara01 Yes, you need say more, because what you said here doesn't relate at all to this discussion. A bunch of these cast members are Jewish, not christian, and have no interest in Jesus at all. I know them well. They weren't "serving the lord" regardless of what some random boomer who watched & enjoyed this performance decided they were.
Absolutely beautiful singing on this.Wonderful music.
At 1:44 that is the face of: "dammit I messed up and I hope to god they don't use that clip"
Yes 😂😂😂 he was like damn it!!
I have always loved this song so much, ever since I was a little girl😊
A truly wonderful voice that just fits this song like a glove. Well done!
Wonderful rendition of this song!! Love the harmony. Astounding job!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Beautiful rendition thank you Anna Maria Perez De Tagle.
Loved it, lovely version of a beautiful song.
Fantastic Version. God Bless.
I am singing this song in my cast production of Godspell and this helped so much!! Thanks.
I love the version by GodSpell but loving this version just as much!!
Ah that 70s sound ... Love those chords, harmonies, and tight unison. You were all amazing. Add some tambourine and you're all set🎶
You kids have incredibable, your all amazing singers, I did this in 1973 I loved doing it then, and I love your way now, YOU ALL ROCK
What a beautiful tone
What I don't realize is why people are always so surprised when Disney Channel stars actually show off their talents. Disney cast people who can do comedy, drama, sing, and dance a bit. Just because they don't show off all of what they can do, that doesn't mean they suddenly become incredible over night. They were already great.
Not sure which one I love more - the new or the older version of this song. One thing I am sure of: Both the new and the old are AWESOME!
Awesome job from all the singers on a...Beautiful piece of music that...stands the test of time!
i almost had tears. they were so inspiring !
this version sends me to tears ..of joy. so excellent. thank you!
almost makes ya wanna cry..really.
i was 5 yrs old when i first heard this back in 1973
wow man.....where did all the time really go.
there was a cartoon called banana splits that came on every saturday afternoon......and i remeber kids on that show singing this exact same song....
good times back then.
She has such a BEAUTIFUL voice.
Gorgeous voice, Anna Maria !!!!
Wow, what a fantastic version, this song gives me goosebumps every time.
Beautiful song. Very simple very easy to sing and remember. I was 5-6 years old when I heard it in the early 70’s on radio air play and now at 52, I still sing it to myself. Robin Lamont had the original beautiful version of it. Love this song! I still hear it once and a while on Sirius 70’s. Makes me smile❤
BIG TIME,LOVE IT! One of my first albums,1973. Great Performance!!!
This version is exceptional. If you think otherwise then go check your hearing. the vocals are a hundred times better than the original and the arrangement is finally a moving masterpiece. I've seen both versions of the play and this one blows away the first. Real singers and real musicians.
I agree sir. This version is outstanding work!
Unfortunately, unlike the original - - it lacks SOUL.
Not even close to the original. Robin Lamont's lead is far superior to this young lady who does have a wonderful voice nonetheless.
@ Mike Lakefloor, thanks Mike. Just no comparison when I listen to both.
Sorry, this is nowhere close to the original. Excessive background vocals by singers who are trying harder to sound dazzling than capture the simple, soulful sound of Robin Lamont's hit version.
I read most of the comments and almost all have missed the point.
This is a song that is pleading for a heart felt request to be closer in every way to the Lord.
In this case I take it to be our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The harmonies are so WOW WOW.
It does at times bring me to tears.
Thank you Jesus !!!
Absolutely agree. Most miss the point reading the Bible regardlessly.
THANKS I NEEDED THAT!!! 11/25/20 !!! KEEPIN THE FAITH
This is a great cover of the song. The show first opened Off-Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has since been produced by multiple touring companies and in many revivals.
Amazing!!
This version is wonderful! ... I listened to this song in 1998 with DC Talk.
I’m still working on the three things!! Love it. Brings back high school memories!!
“Day by Day” was one of the warm-up tunes we played at the all-day orientation we presented for incoming freshmen and their parents at my university. I always liked it as a great way to kick things off for the families beginning a life-long transition.
Wonderful, just wonderful! What an amazing updated version!
IF THE REST OF THIS CD IS THIS GOOD, IT WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST CD's OF ALL TIME.
Love the harmony
I love it! Thank you kindly for bringing Godspelll back! 😇👑🙌
Beautiful
i love all versions of this song but this is my favorite:}:}:}:}:}
Anna has such an amazing voice. So proud of her

I was in the play Godspell and i was the day by day soloist, It was so much fun
The more I hear the song the better I like it. It puts me in another world-better than this one.
Such a great voice. Great tune.
In the end ......Stephen Effen Schwartz......that's why you love this!
This kids kicked this pieces butt! Old sound with new energy. Edgy as heck.thank you!
wOWWWWW! LOVE it, guys!
Love this version!
When you think about how humans can form words in so many different languages and sing like that using only a small muscle of basically meat, it is a testament to God. How do people deny Him??? 🙏✝️🙏🕊️🙏
very nice. I love this song
Amazing
There are still beautiful things in this world
Wow. Angelic, beautiful voice.
oh to be in that house ! the acoustics !!!!!!!!!
