Take it from me who is Chinese I get mistaken for Korean ALOT and I have a Co-worker who is Korean but gets mistaken for Chinese and this all by other Asians. While I think Asians have a better chance of telling other Asians apart it is no guarantee but it would be the same for Whites. Can Whites tell people from English or French or German apart? How about Dutch from Norwegian or Swede? You might be able to tell if certain stereotypical traits are pronounced but in the end you're not going to be 100% sure.

As a Swede, I cannot really tell anyone apart. Bumped into a girl from Italy the other week, she looked like any other person to me, so I would've just assumed she was Swedish if she didn't speak with an Italian accent. A friend of mine speaks with a really clear standard Swedish accent, but breaks into a Northener accent when stressed or upset, but she's from Bosnia! Wouldn't be able to tell from appearance alone.
I feel like at most I can get the general continent right, but given that some people have mixed heritage you really can't make assumptions.
The Icelandic singer Björk has epicanthic folds, but as far as I know she's not Asian at all.

a few years ago they visited each other's families.
in both countries people could not understand why they where speaking English to each other.

As an Ashkenazi Slavic/Roma Jew and Nordic (namely Icelandic) I can sometimes maybe tell the difference
A lot of Nordic people can tell I'm Icelandic or Finnish which I found funny because not many others can really tell. The Icelandic side has Saami and that's a more distinct look than the average Northern European w/o Saami.

My mother is Korean and everyone thinks she is Chinese, even other Korean people. I have a hard time sometimes telling apart some Korean/Japanese grannies that go to the same spa as me. They also think I am Japanese or Korean. Westerners say Chinese while others say some kind of Asian. I think it's really hard because there is some overlap in History. My Korean family name has a Chinese root.

Tbh whenever you observe certain areas of the world (Europe,Asia, Africa etc.) you'll always find that the scale on varieties of phenotypes within each nations is so widespread that you have a large overlapping between different countries. Only the "extremes" will stand out as "typical looking" although they are the extreme and not the norm. A guy of around 1,80 m, brown eyes, brown hair, skin not too dark not too light and not too prominent other physical traits can easily be Dutch,Belgian,German,French,Swiss, Austrian even Italian etc etc... especially of you change the clothings :-D a lot of time we guess the whole package (behaviour, clothes, etc)...

Funny thing about Thai women is you get tall light skinned ones right through to very short and very dark. Thats what happens when you border with Cambodia and China, you get a big mix lol*

There are a lot of Thai people who are 100% ethnically Chinese if you go back a few generations. Same thing in the Philippines and Malaysia. I'm sure that is true in Korea and Japan to a lesser extent, so you can't really equate nationality to ethnic makeup.

@@otherwords1375 yeh a lot of Thais (the wealthier ones) generally have grand or greatgrand parents who emigrated from China, very true. Hey Jessie... Your videos are sooo fun. You and Amber really play off of each other well and keep the laughs coming.
A couple of things I observed here...
    1. On the questions that said "what kind of writing is this?", they didn't ask "what kind of hand-writing is this" or "what kind of writing is written below"... So the questions (for example) which had Korean type written on the type written on the top line were obviously Korean.
    2. Some Chinese friends have taken these quizzes. They agreed with you that telling Asians apart from each other in still photos can be difficult (even for other Asians)... but as my friends pointed out, we identify people not only from their "static" appearance, but also from "how they move". Therefore, you probably would have scored higher if you had been shown moving videos instead of still images. Would you agree?
By the way, I am American and got a higher score than you and Jessie. So (based on my sample size of one) I can truthfully say that "Asians do not all look alike to Westerners".
    Love your videos!

Don't worry I'm American, (but I've lived in Japan for over 6 years now) I got roughly the same score as you playing along while watching your video, and I also can't tell white people apart when doing similar quizzes about them haha. I think people, by virtue of being the same species, tend to look pretty similar when they come from the same general location, which makes sense. There are some differences, but we can't 100% for sure know if the person was born in the region that their traits are stereotypical for, or if they just have the genetics for that area. I'm over 50% Swedish to my knowledge, and Swedish people have thought asked me if I was Swedish. My grandmother is also very Swedish and once took a trip where she had to keep asking people to please use English with her, because they kept mistaking her for a native Swede. So I think the "big markers" can stay around in the genetics of a family for a long time/many generations, even if the family lives somewhere else. Most white people are from like England and the Netherlands and such too (originally) so even though I'm considered American, I look like people from those parts of the world, because that's my ancestry. Maybe it sounds like a no duh, but basically, I think it's natural for people from a similar part of the world, whose family has lived there for many generations to look similar, and be difficult to tell apart, because country dividing lines are not what is creating the diversity in our appearances, but instead geography, climate, and living circumstances.

    • @Bikebrh
      @Bikebrh 2 года назад

I think that because of the geography of Europe there was a lot more mixing which makes it harder to tell. Generally, you might guess that tall blondes are Dutch or Scandinavian, and that white people with narrow or "asian" eyes in Scandinavia are of Sami descent. (Most famously among Americans, actress Renee Zellweger is of Sami descent and was famous for her "squinty" eyes.)

I would say northern Chinese especially those from Dongbei, Hebei and Shandong looks like Korean. Most of Chinese celebrities that look like Korean are from northern China. Look at Chinese actor Deng Lun, Liu Haoran, Ma Si Chao, Jing boran, Wei Da Xun, Liu Yu Ning. Also look at Chinese comedian Du Hai Tao and Guo Qi Lin. Lastly also Chinese model Zhang Liang and Jin da chuan.
Also chinese idol Zhou Zhen Nan
Northern Chinese actress that look korean includes Zhou dongyu, Bai bai he,
Jiang Meng Jie as well as Xu ruo han.Notice that they are all from northern China and have a northern look.
I can tell northern Chinese and southern Chinese apart very clearly. Northern Chinese look very similar to Mongolian and Korean.

The differences between East Asians are just different style, face expression and body language.
If you know more about China, you would think is very crazy that have 1.4 billion people with Eurasian( Uyghur), Southeast Asian related to Laos (Ethnic Minorities in Yunnan, Guichou and Qingdao), old Mongoloid (Mongolian and Tibet), Hongkongers ( Boat Dwellers mixed with southern Chinese), Taiwanese (Mountain Ethnic Minorities mixed with Hakka and eastern Chinese)
Japan and Vietnam has over than 125.7 millions people that also can find all the type of East Asians face there , but Japanese style is very unique and very easy to distinguish. Vietnamese is a bit difficult to distinguish between the Chinese in west China because people are still poor that do not really used to know fashion and skin care. If they become a developed country then we will find almost of East Asians there too.
There are Only the classic faces are easy to distinguish, or some of area got more some type of faces.

I can also immediately recognize Korean and would not mistake Cantonese or Mandarin for Korean, but if you throw fuzoenese (spelling?) at me, I'd be lost (or any other Chinese dialect). Weird, but learning one (even only just a little) helps you distinguish them from the others. At the very least, you can tell when it's NOT the one you've learned.

And it can’t be about the language since Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese are not related to each other.

    lets start at the beginning.
Chinese is not a single ethnicity ..... there are so many different faces even in China ... the southerners look very different to the northerners.
Then you have the issue that many neibouring countries have ethnicities the same as those on the Chinese side of the border.
Then you have the issues of ethnic mixing thruout the reigon.
As laowhy with many Asian friends from different places, I'd stand a better chance than you ... but .. it can be hard with just a static face
the giveaway is the manerisms and the accent/errors when they speak English.

Southern Chinese people have rounder features, northern ones have longer thinner ones. Amber looks like a person from Northern China. Our hero Jessie looks like a person from southern China. Ha Ha ...... now .......... Can Europeans tell each other apart without social ques.
Here In Au, I grew up surrounded by all sorts of immigrants (we are one , but we are many, and from all the lands on earth we come), BUT, in some cases it would be hard to tell from a picture alone where that person's family came from.
Some Greeks are easy to spot ... ahh yeh .... but try to tell the difference between Spanish, Italian and southern French.
Here in AU we had a comedian, Mark Mitchel, played a character "Con the Fruiterer" . His characterization was so convincing that many people believed that Con the Fruiterer was a real Greek person, others firmly believed that Mark Mitchel was Greek. ...... Truth was that mark had no Greek or Continential heritage.
It can be very hard to tell one nationality from another without social ques, especially when the examples are cherry picked so as not to be easy.
I have a Northern Chinese friend who comes from a few hundred Km north west of Beijing, She identifies as Han Chinese ...... but from a static picture alone she could easily pass off for a northern European.
HA the other thing is hair colour ........ so many Asian and Chinese women ( and some men) dye their hair black from a very young age, so there are no natural hair colour variations.

Pro tip: when an asian person looks european they are almost ALWAYS from japan. Not in every single case, but its a safe bet. And if they look asian but their eyes are super round, they're almost always korean. Not in EVERY case, but the eye fold surgery is CRAZY popular in korea, so you just don't see it as much anywhere else in the asian lands so its a safe bet to call korean.
