With Shadows film debut coming and with his Generations game on the horizon it feels just about right to review this game. It was definitely the edgiest of all of the Sonic games. But I was the right age for it when I played it. So I actually liked using guns on aliens as much as homing attacks.

Quick correction: This game actually replaced the entire English voice cast from SA1/2/Heroes with the English voice cast from the Sonic X anime, who would continue to voice the characters in the games until Sonic Colors in 2010. In particular, Jason Griffith voices both Sonic and Shadow, and is generally considered by fans to be the best voice for both of them. That said, the Japanese cast does return from previous games, as they had already reprised their roles in Sonic X's Japanese dub. Otherwise, great retrospective and an awesome way to capitalize on the Year of Shadow!

This Is Might Be The Most Fair And Positive Review About The Game Unlike Most Of The Videos Bashing This Game For No Reason, Most People Don't Even Being Open Minded When They Play This Game, As Someone Played Every 3D Sonic Games (And I Like All Of Them) I Think Shadow The Hedgehog Is My 3rd Favourite 3D Sonic Game And I Like It More Than SA1 And SA2, That Doesn't Mean The Rest Of The Games On Gamecube Are Bad I Still Love SA1 And SA2 They Are One Of My Favourite Games In The Francise, And I Kinda Like Sonic Heroes Even Its Sometimes Is Frustrating Due To Its An Unpolished Game And The Padding Kill It, But Shadow The Hedgehog Fixed All The Issues From Heroes And Improved Most Of The Mechanics From SA1 And SA2 And Make It In My Opinion More Enjoyable, The Story Is A Step Up From SA1 And Heroes And Equally Good To SA2, The Gameplay Is Blast And Varied, The Visuals Is Unique And The Music Is Amazing, So Yeah I Love This Game Its Far From Perfect But Not A Bad Game Like People Said.

I had this game in my hands multiple times when I was at the convention this past weekend. I didn't end up picking it up and I had found it for both the PS2 and GameCube. It's cool that Shadow has his own set of moves with the aerial roundhouse kick and the three punch combo. Even cooling he is packing heat haha. Interesting that this was the first time in the series where you didn't lose all your rings with a hit. Bummer the multiplayer is a throwaway. I'd like to get this in my collection at some point, it was just a little pricey this past weekend. Great review, GCG!
Haha nice man. I will say, avoid the PS2 version, as it's technically inferior to this version. Shadow packing heat is one I thought was wild lol! This was an excellent review man! I think u did a fantastic job getting into all the plus sides to the game, I think u explained the story really well and eventhough I didn’t beat it, it gave me a really clear view of the characters and story in the game. But even with all the positives u pointed out I think u have a fair and balanced review of the camera, control and combat flaws at points. But overall I think its a really well written, in depth and well rounded review of the game, the story, briefly explaining the history behind shadow and the world of sonic and getting all the main points of the story out without giving everything away. The music throughout was perfect, I think u did good with talking about the soundtrack and how it helped put a more positive spin on the game despite some flaws. Well done man!! It’s really an amazing breakdown and review!

I enjoyed this one! Hopefully Sega will go beyond the top picks and remaster/rerelease Sonic games like this. And great timing for releasing this video the same month as Sonic X Shadow Generations! Can't wait to get the Digital Deluxe Edition for that game! Even asked for a physical copy for Christmas in hopes of getting Gerald Robotnik's journal! Earlier this year I was on my Xbox Series X playing through games where Shadow's playable or has a costume based on him that is worn by a different character in Sonic games which means I played Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Forces (Episode Shadow, Modern Sonic levels that Shadow is playable in and Avatar costume), Sonic Superstars (The Shadow costume they release months ago), Sonic and All-Star Racing Transformed and Team Sonic Racing.
Glad you also enjoyed this one! I’d love to see a remaster for this, add some QoL improvements based on the flaws I mentioned and I think many would give it a look with Shadow’s current return this year! This was a well reviewed video, I spent countless hours on this game in my hayday as a kid. It is funny because playing this before I was unaware of how much you actually had to do to complete this game. I remember trying so hard trying to figure it out, to only find out in my adulthood that its actually a difficult objective based game , which I might add is great with different story paths and picking your own decisions with different consequences. I kind of want to revisit as I still have my childhood copy for PS2. But I am not going to lie, it does seem overwhelming to say the least. Maybe one day I will pick this one back up, but shoutout to SEGA for being so ambitious and strong minded for this project at that time. It is not the most perfect game but not the worst. The ratings do it a great justice. Great work man! Always the deep dives you do into these reviews.!

I will admit, I used to play the living heck out of Shadow The Hedgehog ever since it's initial release, there were only three action stages that got on my absolute nerves, Mad Matrix, Cosmic Fall, and Lost Impact. The biggest criticism despite my deepest love for the game has to with the Story, it takes 326 paths to complement one campaign, but 10 different endings to unlock the Last Story. The good news is that we have the Expert Mode where you can play all the action stages ranging from Westopolis to the Last Way in chronological order without having to do 71 missions (At least to a certain degree).
That's awesome to hear you played this a lot since release! Yeah, the insane amount of paths to see all the scenes is overwhelming. Funny, I never tried Expert Mode, but now I'm thinking I need to give that a look! Thanks for checking out the review!
@@GameCubeGalaxy Good Luck with that, because there are 2 major catches about this mode: 1.) You have to get A-Ranks from all the missions to unlock that mode. 2.) Upon playing Expert Mode, if you lose all your lives despite reaching to the furthest part of the game, you will restart all over again.
I’ve been playing this game for nearly 20 years and I never knew you could change your mission without pausing the game besides running into mission characters
Great video, always nice to see other people like the game as well. Just so you know, there is actually more multiplayer content. If a 2nd controller is plugged in they can take control of the Hero/Dark characters that are following shadow.

This was another one on the Xbox I played, and own. My GC collection is low, mostly all the games that weren’t on other systems and that’s how I collect lol. Like if I have something on PS2 and it’s not an exclusive, do I need it on Xbox too…nope. But yeah I enjoyed this for what it was, was a Sonic heroes fan also and this played very similar. I’ll have to give this another shot. Tried it few years back and controls turned me off. Unfortunately now kinda expensive. Great review also man if your in the eye of the hurricane hope you and your family made it out and are ok
The controls do take some adjusting, but once you grasp it, it definitely plays better. This has gotten pricey sadly, and the GameCube version would easily be the one I recommend of the 3. What a solid review man! Shadow has been on my list of GameCube games to get for two years now. I’ve been trying to find it in the wild and have missed a few opportunities. The only thing I knew about the game prior to watching your review is that Shadow can wield guns. How little did I know…😂. It’s cool that there are so many different game mechanics across all the levels to keep it fresh and high replay-ability. This game is bada&@!!!

There's actually a really in-depth overhaul mod for this game called Shadow the Hedgehog Reloaded that has so many quality of life changes and additions you can barely fit them all on one page. And yea I'm also looking forward to the new Shadow game, it looks really fun.

@@SirClintRockfoot most romhacks are designed around emulators which often have certain upgrades to the (emulated) hardware. They often don't work on real hardware although some do. You tried on a wii? Get Dolphin, it's great.
I probably won't, mainly because there are countless other videos showing the process on how to mod the Wii. However, no question the Wii and Wii U can be ultimate GameCube machines once modded!
I never played Shadow the Hedgehog before, but I’ve always been curious to see if it’s only the story that’s flawed or if the gameplay is as well. Honestly, I can usually have some fun with a bad story. But if the gameplay is solid, that’s more than enough for me. While I can appreciate the story and lore Sega and Sonic Team come up with, that’s not the main reason I play Sonic games. Although I have been wanting to read the Sonic comics from IDW as they apparently have no business being as good as they are.
Honestly, it does a good job with both story and gameplay. While it has its flaws, it’s a game I had a hard time putting down, and always dove right back in for another playthrough. I’d say it’s definitely worth playing if you’re a fan of the series! Thanks for checking out review!
Truth to be told, I always seen Shadow the Hedgehog in a negative light because of the janky camera and I like having good camera control when navigating the areas. I’m not sure if I would like it now honestly. The music and presentation will always be excellent even in the worst mainline series to so Sega still at least managed to keep those consistent….

I still can’t believe I beat this game 100% yes why I was cause I’m insane and I was dedicated to beat all Sonic games in the GameCube and oh brother was a pain especially Shadows own game what a miserable time and enjoyable game
I never understood the hate behind this game. It’s basically Sonic with a gun! Is it cheesy? Absolutely but come on it’s an awesome action platformer with a surprising challenge curve to it.

It's mostly disliked for how monotonous it is to play the same levels over and over to unlock new paths. If the game didn't have the pointless morality system and just had the levels be played through linearly, it would have been a banger.
@alex64gaming The reason it was hated is because it destroyed the legacy that Adventure 2 did so well. The gameplay was also boring. The fact you play the same level over & over again for different story telling, but you have to do all levels to get the true ending of the game instead which the path you followed means nothing is absurd. Not to mentioned the missions are either repetitive or frustrating.
I was never a fan of this game as a kid. For reference, I played and beat Jak 1, Rachet and Clank 2, and Sly 1. Playing Westopolis around 10 times sucked. I traded the game in when I was playing the Maria mission for 3 consecutive days and got nowhere.

This game gets to much hate. Yes some of the missions suck but I beat it again this year with sonic heroes and I wanted to play this more than heroes. Even when I was on my last team I was like do I really want to play this stage again where shadow has some repeat stages it still wasn’t as bad for me. Still like both games though.

The whole idea to use GUNS was doomed from the start. It doesn’t fit the gameplay or characters and narrows down the market. I never enjoyed this game. Shadow is mysterious and cool, but in this game it was TOO MUCH.

1.) You have to get A-Ranks from all the missions to unlock that mode.
2.) Upon playing Expert Mode, if you lose all your lives despite reaching to the furthest part of the game, you will restart all over again.
I’ve been playing this game for nearly 20 years and I never knew you could change your mission without pausing the game besides running into mission characters

Just so you know, there is actually more multiplayer content. If a 2nd controller is plugged in they can take control of the Hero/Dark characters that are following shadow.

This was another one on the Xbox I played, and own. My GC collection is low, mostly all the games that weren’t on other systems and that’s how I collect lol. Like if I have something on PS2 and it’s not an exclusive, do I need it on Xbox too…nope. But yeah I enjoyed this for what it was, was a Sonic heroes fan also and this played very similar. I’ll have to give this another shot. Tried it few years back and controls turned me off. Unfortunately now kinda expensive. Great review also man if your in the eye of the hurricane hope you and your family made it out and are ok
The controls do take some adjusting, but once you grasp it, it definitely plays better. This has gotten pricey sadly, and the GameCube version would easily be the one I recommend of the 3. It’s nice to see someone actually take an objective look at STH instead of mindlessly hating cause “there’s guns in it” the game has flaws but I always thought the game was far better than people made it out to be

What a solid review man! Shadow has been on my list of GameCube games to get for two years now. I’ve been trying to find it in the wild and have missed a few opportunities. The only thing I knew about the game prior to watching your review is that Shadow can wield guns. How little did I know…😂. It’s cool that there are so many different game mechanics across all the levels to keep it fresh and high replay-ability. This game is bada&@!!!

Yeah, there's plenty of other mechanics in place here, but the gunplay definitely give a twist into the formula, and the replay factor is fairly high! There's actually a really in-depth overhaul mod for this game called Shadow the Hedgehog Reloaded that has so many quality of life changes and additions you can barely fit them all on one page. And yea I'm also looking forward to the new Shadow game, it looks really fun.

I tried to play this one recently, but I couldn’t get it to work on real hardware. It kept crashing on me right after exiting the main menu.
@@SirClintRockfoot most romhacks are designed around emulators which often have certain upgrades to the (emulated) hardware. They often don't work on real hardware although some do. You tried on a wii? Get Dolphin, it's great.

I probably won't, mainly because there are countless other videos showing the process on how to mod the Wii. However, no question the Wii and Wii U can be ultimate GameCube machines once modded!
I never played Shadow the Hedgehog before, but I’ve always been curious to see if it’s only the story that’s flawed or if the gameplay is as well.
Honestly, I can usually have some fun with a bad story. But if the gameplay is solid, that’s more than enough for me. While I can appreciate the story and lore Sega and Sonic Team come up with, that’s not the main reason I play Sonic games.
Although I have been wanting to read the Sonic comics from IDW as they apparently have no business being as good as they are.
Honestly, it does a good job with both story and gameplay. While it has its flaws, it’s a game I had a hard time putting down, and always dove right back in for another playthrough. I’d say it’s definitely worth playing if you’re a fan of the series! Thanks for checking out review!
Truth to be told, I always seen Shadow the Hedgehog in a negative light because of the janky camera and I like having good camera control when navigating the areas. I’m not sure if I would like it now honestly. The music and presentation will always be excellent even in the worst mainline series to so Sega still at least managed to keep those consistent….

I never understood the hate behind this game. It’s basically Sonic with a gun! Is it cheesy? Absolutely but come on it’s an awesome action platformer with a surprising challenge curve to it.

It's mostly disliked for how monotonous it is to play the same levels over and over to unlock new paths. If the game didn't have the pointless morality system and just had the levels be played through linearly, it would have been a banger.
@alex64gaming The reason it was hated is because it destroyed the legacy that Adventure 2 did so well. The gameplay was also boring. The fact you play the same level over & over again for different story telling, but you have to do all levels to get the true ending of the game instead which the path you followed means nothing is absurd. Not to mentioned the missions are either repetitive or frustrating.
I was never a fan of this game as a kid. For reference, I played and beat Jak 1, Rachet and Clank 2, and Sly 1. Playing Westopolis around 10 times sucked. I traded the game in when I was playing the Maria mission for 3 consecutive days and got nowhere.

This game gets to much hate. Yes some of the missions suck but I beat it again this year with sonic heroes and I wanted to play this more than heroes. Even when I was on my last team I was like do I really want to play this stage again where shadow has some repeat stages it still wasn’t as bad for me. Still like both games though.
It really does get a lot of hate sadly. It's far from a perfect game, but what's here is really enjoyable (at least I enjoyed it lol). Sonic Heroes is one that I really didn't jive with, as I felt that was such a massive downgrade from Sonic Adventure 2. Thanks for checking out the review man!

This was to me the most bizarre sonic game. And I'm also not a fan of the sonic adventure especially the 3D Games. So I won't touch it. Curiously Sonic Heroes was more fun to me .

The whole idea to use GUNS was doomed from the start. It doesn’t fit the gameplay or characters and narrows down the market. I never enjoyed this game. Shadow is mysterious and cool, but in this game it was TOO MUCH.
