My friend has a 5th edition nurgle army made up of this era of modes, including a large unit if these dudes. It is glorious.
I recently picked up a 32 year old eldar spirit warrior. Basically an eldar dreadnought with a much smaller head very impressed by how slender it is (feels more lithe than a new wraithlord, almost as tall too)
It's 11 years my senior and I am glad to have them
what is the best school? = old skool. I really like the original GW models + should have got more of them at the time. [el'sda2].
So weird, I was just thinking about this model. We’ll, it’s tail. In the old GW conversion guide they made a chaos spawn using that guy’s bugbutt, and I never knew what the original model was. Now I do! Thanks!
I bought that model back when GW was discontinuing it back in 2006. However GW didn't have the whole model available (due to the old bits service) so I'm missing one piece of the eye stalks and his left foot. Luckily back then if GW would give it to you for free if that happened.
the bits service was great. now you have to buy a full box to get the bit you want (ofc theres the aftermarket, but GW would never tell you about that)
The older one is awesome. Has a real evil space slug vibe and feels very nurgle.
Jay, I really liked this format. Learning about the model while you paint it. Keep it goin. My favorite video to date.
I remember the lore had these things as excitable puppies that just wanted a cuddle. Unfortunately these were Puppies of Nurgle which means corrosive slime, pestilence and putrefying breath.
Because of a few youtubers showing older models, Ive tracked down metal space marine capitan with terminator honors, still packed in blister. I want to paint him as Crimson Fist, and have a piece of warhammer history too.
eBay is a great place to find older models, I was recently able to buy the original Imperial assassin and a squat. So far my favourite find is the Legion of the Damned special character, Sergeant Centurius, still in his plaster pack =D
In my opinion that is the best looking version of a beast of Nurgle, the others don't compare.
100% agree
Hey, just as advice from a cinematography perspective id recommend switching the game box of Plants vs Zombies with another game box that is as dark in coloration as the other ones on that shelf. So it doesnt draw attention away from you in foreground and makes the background look more level in feel and not so busy ;)
I love the older models. So much charm, nostalgia and a little mystique to them. A friend of mine has been using the 3rd edition Great Unclean One as a daemon prince in his Nurgle army.
Those scarab swarms are sweet. I actually love each modelling they've had.
New ones are sweet and detailed, but blocky and small chunks work as well
I would love to see a playlist of all your Oldhammer videos so I can find them! They are my favourites of what you do here :)
I love that old sculpt and your colorful paint job! Your thumb nail for this video cracked me up, too! 🤪
"Resale Value" is a term that should never be part of this hobby. Good job getting this old monster back to the table where it'll get the love it deserves!
It's true. I have a couple of metal models from before I was born, most of them have had some filing, drilling, or clipping done to them to make room for new bits and/or green stuff and they look better for it. My Space Marines army had its debut at a tournament last month & won best army (out of 14, not particularly stiff competition), so I know I'm doing a good job with it. Still, somehow it feels kinda wrong to me to mess with something that old.
Super cool model and great paint job.
Ohh the transition got me. Great work, I love to see the brave model painting you're able to get with what seem like achievable methods.
These are my favorites videos you make. Need more retro
I have it too (as well as the other editions), painted "recently" and still spitting in battle :) so yours is not alone !
Excellent work! It's been a long time since I've seen this old model, your painting and proper basing did it justice!
I've been mulling your point about painting being an additive process over the past couple days, and I can't thank you enough.
This thought has been added to 'don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good', and finding a balance between the two has helped me get over the hump and finish up several models.
Thanks again, Jay!
Very cool model although I’m decently new to the hobby I can appreciate a good paint job
Rewatching this because of the thumbnail. Chefs kiss quality
I LOVE HIM THE LIL FLIPPERS THE THE AMOUNT OF Cuteness RADIATING FROM THIS ADORABLE BEAN I CANT HANDLE IT T.T
I'm a proud owner of every plastic genestealer and Broodlord/Partiarch.
Yes, even those from Space Hulks (old and new) and "princes" exclusive to Deathwatch Overkill.
I have this lil guy! I didn't realize that he had such a limited run!
casually throwing it on the table... you monster
So good... I love your appreciation for the earliest of models. ✌😄
Brilliant once more. I love him. In my heart I call him Mr. SlimoBoy.
I love to mix the different generations of miniatures into an army ❤
I think you did an amazing job and that it fits in beautifully into your Nurgle army
Love the history and the painting
Perfect video man! I love how enthusiastic you always are keep it up!
Managed to pick up Imrik the Dragonlord for my High Elves, mini had never been assembled so I spent today working on it, old mini's just feel so much different to work with. On a sidenote, the mini stabbed me a few times with all the spines and claws and teeth on the mini, it's a stabby dragon danger noodle and it's amazing.
Glad you touched on the spawn not looking very nurgly. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to convert them.
green stuff. also I'm sure some bits in the box will have a more nurgle vibe. you get a lot of bits n those spawn kits. they're good to have just for the bits TBH. I was using them for bits to create Tzeentch daemon princes.
Great job bending those tentacles into a natural pattern (if you can call any part of this natural); This model was in and out of production so fast I’ve never seen one in person
Those death guard models look incredible!
I just watched your vid on how you painted them, I love it and eager to give the 'sloppy' base coating a try!
I’ve always loved this model
I have a collection of Bloodthirster models, I have every one they ever released, the original metal mini (which is about the size of a primaris marine lol), the classic metal with the flat face, in both metal and resin, and of course every loadout of the new enormous ones, plus a Skarbrand to top off the collection. I never really intended to collect them all but over the years playing Daemons I randomly ran into these cool old minis from time to time and snapped them up.
I have this model and its 2nd Ed version ..... somewhere..... You've inspired me to hunt for them, get paintin' and get them on the tabletop. Cheers!!!
Complete honest, this is my favorite iteration of the Beasts of Nurgle.
Love the outcome, he looks super mischievous and trolly. Like he'd be browsing through 40kchan trolling space marines xD
That looks really good! 👏
If you've ever seen the video of the puffer fish eating a carrot, that's the noise a Beast of Nurgle makes
Genuinely such a cool model
This video might have the best thumbnail I've ever seen. 👏👏👏
6:47 "I carefully destroyed the resale value of this model." hahaha
Nurgle puppies.. Looks great!
One of my favourite daemon models, stands the test of time very well.
I have a look of thoughts with the modern Nurgle look, they're all bloated and smiles-they feel maybe a little too cartoonist? I really like the older stuff where the focus was on slugs and fly head champions
To be fair it should be a weird mix, but yeah I want more slugs and flies for modern nurgle definitely more stuff like this model
That's a great picture.
Very nice paint scheme. In North America that model was very hard to find even when it was released. I had to make some hard trades to get some of those in the early 90s.
I love this video format, and the mini too - it's a bit derpy but I dig it
The more watch your channel the more im impressed. Thank you for your work
I 3d printed about 1000 skulls in an hour on my Saturn that I used for dozens of bases for my Nighthaunts.
The image of the beast atop the crate really made me giggle.
White Dwarf 119 (which you can find on scribd) has some great nurgle-related artwork from that era
I love having old models mixed in. I've found my armies are all super unique looking because I either add on stuff like banners or find OOP minis! My Black Templar army is a total hodge-podge 😂 Tac Squad I made into a Blanche tribute (with a random guy in mark III armour) next to Primaris guys, next to my HQ (A re-loyalistified chaos lord in terminator armour and a retro captain I tore up to make a 3rd edition model lookalike.) I will also end up getting castellan Draco. But wow! The army is so unique, it really only takes a bit of kitbashing and some unique models 😂
Rogue Trader models are great. If they don't look serious, they look real campy and brighten up the collection.
I don't know what specifically makes it happen, whether the time smoothed out details, the pewter and resin of different qualities, the modern paints on the older models or mix of all those things, but I don't seem to be able to see painters getting the same results as they would've got by painting up modern minis. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean this in negative way whatsoever, it just seem that no matter how hard anyone tries, there is a distinct quality between the results. Like comparing older and newer codex artworks. Every time I see similar paintjobs on models that are 20+ years, no matter how smooth and crisp the paintjob, I immediately can tell that "there's something about it" as if dragged out of 2nd or 3rd Editions or heavily inspired with John Blanche
Metal reacts vastly differently to paints than resins or plastics. It's more heat conductive, so paints behave differently. It's more porous, so primers and paints stick to it differently. You can easily tell an old metal GW model apart from a newer Finecast version of the same sculpt.
@@Velcraft That’s exactly what I’m saying. I’m in the hobby for about 10 years total and my whole experience was plastic with occasional resin here and there. I’m aware of the metal models and got pretty good at distinguishing old metal or resins from the GW’s website quite accurately, but even then the pictures themselves are quite dated so I wasn’t sure if it was that or just “old way of painting”. Also been seeing more and more often RUclipsrs working with metals and in some instances you can get amazing paint jobs but I always wondered is it due to the skill of the painter or not. And today I just couldn’t hold it in any longer 💁♂️
Hmmmmm. Now you got me wanting to look back the the years at slanesshi demons. There's a part of me that would love to get the OLD keeper of secrets sculpt and use it as a chaos spawn/daemon prince
you got the old nurglings? they used to have the bums sculpted on them. I have some old daemonettes as well, which were also anatomically correct.
"Slug-Walrus-Medussa" bahahahahah amazing! Great vid thanks :)
Hilarious 😂 thumbnail!
Ayyye you had some flow going at 2:51 i thought you were about to start freestyling 🤣
Man stuff like this makes me want to actually finish my rogue trader era space marine army
Man, this old beast of nurgle puts the modern one to shame
Super cool video! But I dont understand why there is two identical pictures of Jay on the thumbnail, what's up with that?
I usually don't laugh at the dumb face edit things on youtube but the thumbnail actually managed to get a chuckle out of me despite me being sick today.
when paintinf nurgle there are no mistakes, just happy accidents
Love that model
13:40 You know what I always wanna do? That's right ... our patreons ... sexy sexy patreons
Looking at the model... I'm getting reminded of some Nudibranchs. :)
i think your noise was spot on
Really like your passion, keep up the good job
I still have this model :) There's a big resurgence of 6th edition WHFB in my area which I will be using it for. I'm in two minds as to whether to repaint or leave it in its terrible paint job from my youth.
Freaking love that beast of nurgle, what a beaut.
That OG beast of Nurgle model is disgustingly beautiful. Looks way better than the newer model imo.
Man. Wish I had one of those for D&D purposes. Lucky☆
Would adore to see more classic warhammer models given a new chance in the game today!
i do the same technique for underpainting my trees / dryads and stuff for my woodelves / sylvaneth
I think some gross goopy green slime would be a great addition to the sluggy boi. Maybe with some UV resin
Get your hands on the old, metal, spawn of chaos. A complete copy of John Carpenter's beastie in 'The Thing' when it's screaming a fit, trying to find a former to deal with its situation ie burning to death! Lots of legs and arms flailing out of the slimy ball of a body. Totally says 'Nurgle' 👍☺👌
A beautiful mascot for your team
Now THAT is the kind of "youtuber pulling face in the thumbnail" that I will appreciate and click on.
I miss warhammer. I was never very good at painting (like an honest 5 out of 10, "acceptable" but nothing special). But it made me happy. I really wish I could do it again, but my hands shake too much now with what I have going on.
Nice armies .... but there was no necrons in rouge trader . However there where Zoats which could be confused with the modern day Necrons, but alas they are mere chaos robots ... evil buggers ..
Nercron didn't make their official debut in White Dwarf 217.
And it was 3rd Ed that Necrons had a codex.. so that necron scarab ...you pointed out was from 2002-2003 .
I think you can use beasts of nurgle in a Death Guard army, but the codex doesn't have summoning rules for them. That's in the demon codex I think
Old plaguebearers are great too the first and second ones that are quite similiar, this swamp beast cyclopes with a sword and some funny ones with theres tongue out, the next one where bery different, strange, some are bad, the bum very job, are strange but others are great.
Old tyrannids are great, the only I can play, I hate what came after the 2nd - 3rd edition tyrannid.
Old metal dark eldar and harlequins has a ton of beautiful figs
Oh and too come back to nurgle, the pestigors are OP ! And the first plague marines are great too
Ah, yes. Late 80's/Early 90's Warhammer/40K mini... I still have some unpainted as well. Zoats, 2nd edition Chaos Beast, Lord MaCragge on Throne, several others.... someday, I may actually get to paint them... I hope!
17:17 Jay's ahegao face. LOL😂
Oh man you have to expand that DG army!!
Great video. Scarabs/necrons are new than RT era.
Hey Jay! Check out "The Creeping Terror" and old 50s B movie. I've always felt the first beast of nurgle was inspired by it :)
silly question, Jay, what is that bark you're using for the base?
Also, love the paint job you've done with ya nurgle stuff, using the blue really looks good here.
I think he called them pine nuggets? Idk you could probably try searching for that or wood chunks for basing materials
@@TheRemixGrave thanks, I'll try searching with that, I was hoping for more info to refine my search.
17:14 it looks like a mix of turkey noises+choking cat
I'm old enough to remember when those models came out originally... 😭😱😱😭
Lovely lovely pewter
The first black and white artwork of this model is horrifying for some reason.
Props on that thumbnail.
That thing is a super cutie!
