Ego Mower -- Review after six weeks -- DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

  • This is a short review of the new Ego Battery Powered Mower. This is the Ego Select Cut version. After six weeks, I'm liking it more than I did at first. It takes a while to get used to maneuvering it, but I'm now an expert at making it go where I want. And it's working quite well.
    If you're considering a battery powered mower, the Ego product line is one you might want to check out before making your decision. I'm very happy with this one so far. Except for that DIRTY LITTLE SECRET I talk about in the video.
    If you're a representative for Toro or Greenworks or Kobalt or ny other company that makes battery powered mowers, send me your best choice and I'll do a review or comparison with the Ego and see how it stacks up. After that, I'll give it away to one lucky viewer. I'd be happy to do more than one if I get multiple takers on the offer.

    I ve had my ego for going on 2 years and I always hose the whole mower. I have never had any problems whatsoever. I just always make sure i don't hose it around the battery compartment and i make sure compartment door is closed and I thoroughly clean the bottom to get the grass out and clean the mulching slot. It still is working great. A little water will not hurt it. if I store it without cleaning the grass smells up the place after a few days. A totally amazing mower!! No gas or oil! No spark plugs! No maintenance! I Love it!!

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ruclips.net/user/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    I purchased last year, have over two acres (sod) , however have some hilly area's didn't want the JD tractor to cut (places marks on lawn), works great a year later. Just purchased new blade only $21.00, cuts like new. Battery still charges fully from almost out in 2 hours. Can run the machine 1 1/2 hours before red light appears. Very satisfied . No Gas, No Oil , low maintenance, great for your situation and honestly also mine. Nice product would recommend !

    I have watched countless reviews of this mower in preparation for making a purchase soon. You are the ONLY person who mentioned that it should not be hosed off. Though this likely will not be a deal breaker, that is a minor annoyance that I’m glad to be aware of before buying one. Thanks a lot man. Good job

      EGO's engineers (or someone) made statements in the manual that you shouldn't use water to clean the mower. However, EGO's marketing department, apparently, decided that was too much effort.They'll show you how easy it is to just hose it off when you're done. ruclips.net/video/I6i-oFSk3fc/видео.html

    I've had an EGO mower for over three years - even used it in a downpour (had to finish, in Florida showers just pop up.)
    I rinse it off when I'm done.
    No issues other than replacing one battery after three years. I have about 6 batteries because I have the hedge trimmer, the weed eater, the blower, the pole saw with an extension, the hedge trimmer extension, the edger, the chainsaw - I think that's about it.
    No oil (other than for the chain saw and pole saw), no gas, I'm happy with it.

      Same here - I have the 1st gen version. After mowing, I remove the battery and put it on the charger. I'll then stand the mower up and hose off underneath, and allow the wet grass to collect on the bag door. Flip it back on its wheels, open up the bag door, dump the grass on the lawn, rinse off any remaining grass and then let the mower dry-out in the sun before putting it away for its next use. Once the grass dries on the lawn at a later time, I'll rake it up. No issues with the electronics in three years of ownership, although you quickly find out where EGO cut corners and used low-grade steel.

      I do the same with my Ryobi. I just make sure the battery isn't installed, and try to keep from directly spraying around the battery cover. The mower sits for 6+ days before I have to use it again, so it has plenty time for whatever water might get where it shouldn't to dry out... ;)

    Hi Michael - your lawn has really grown well! And it's a nice green.
    The EGO is quiet and you seem to get a good cut from it. Cleaning the mower is a chore I don't enjoy - I use a handbrush to get the worst off.
    What caught my eye was the NB Miata behind you! I have an 2009 Miata NC Facelift.
    My lawnmower plans have been kiboshed by Corona - I wanted to get an English reel mower (Allett - also available as electric) for my lawn but am currently stuck with the cheapest Chinese petrol deal I bought as a stopgap. It will have to keep working until I can get to the UK again.
    All the best to you & Rosie, Rob

    Great video! I just bought one, and it seems like a quality build, all except that the side discharge shute won’t stay connected. It just doesn’t fit snugly at all. If I put it in the mower and take my hand off of it, the shute just falls right off. Of course, I know that the spring loaded door helps to hold it on. But even Using that, there’s about 2/10 of an inch gap where the side chute doesn’t meet the mower. Is this normal?

    I have had a non-self propelled 21" Ego mower for the last 2 years. I mow a property of 9000sq/ft. The original battery and blade is a joke if you are going to want any kind of clean, decent cut in tall or wet grass and bagging. I put the high lift blade and saw a lot of improvement. I also put the higher voltage battery in and was able to finish and bag in one charge (about 60-70min). I wash the mower AFTER EACH AND EVERY MOW. I have not had a single problem doing this. You just have to keep the deck handle and the wheel axels greased so it doesn't rust out.

    A year ago I purchased the Ego push mower with the 5.0 AH battery and had to purchase a high lift blade towards the end of the mowing season. The reason for this was because the lift was terrible and you cannot mow high. The high lift blade helped a bit but is still not very good on settings 4,5, and 6 and what happens is that the grass ends up matting down. Do the double blades on this new Ego help in that matter?

    • @MagnumVideos
      @MagnumVideos  4 года назад +1

      Yes. I think the double blades to help in preventing or reducing the number of missed blades. My grass was long yesterday, pretty much matted down from 5 inches of rain the last couple of days. I started mowing early and decided to quit and try it late. When the afternoon arrive and things warmed up, the grass was standing up a lot better and the mower took care of it.

    • @steviem5279
      @steviem5279 4 года назад +1

      @@MagnumVideos thanks, its frustrating even with the high lift blade so I'm glad that it seems the double blades actually work. My problem is my back yard, between my hose and my neighbors and along his fence line, what happens is that strip of lawn doesn't get much sun and because my backyard is low lying and traps the moisture and humidity, that area tends to stay wet to damp so the grass matts down. My old gas mower had no problems with that grass and lifted the blades of grass and cut them perfectly, the ego not so much. The areas where the grass gets hit with a lot of sun or in the front of my house where the lawn is set higher and even though its shady, the wind dries it out quite nicely there is no problem with the mow, its just the area I mentioned. Its frustrating for sure and what I might do is either switch over to this new Ego or buy the Toro which they say has great suction.

    I've never had to mow lawn because my husband did it. When it became my task I decided I wanted an electric mower. I don't like gas yard tools because of the mess, smell and maintenance. Having never made those decisions before I set out to shop. I compared all the battery tools and decided on EGO. I bought the mower, blower, and weed eater. In one half charge of the mid size battery I can mow, blow and weed eat. I'm pleased with my EGO and considering the small chain saw and hedger. Competition by Sthil, green works and others will challenge EGO but for this old lady who has had to take over the yard work EGO is my choice.

    Your lawn looks terrific! I'm watching MANY videos on battery mowers. 3 in particular. Ego, Toro, Kobalt. I'm leaning towards the Ego. One concern. Can the Ego be too light? While watching videos it seems as though the front of the mower sometimes comes up off the ground. I'm short so I'd adjust the handle to a lower position and think maybe this might increase the front side pulling up from lack of counter balance in the front? What is your feeling on this? Those who use the mower in the upper position seem to naturally push down slightly. Anyway, your thoughts on this will be appreciated. Thanks & keep on mowing!

    • @MagnumVideos

      Your idea sounds correct to me. I watched a video from the Lawn Care Nut and he mentioned the same thing. My lowering the handle you're going to have a tendency to keep those front wheels on the ground better and make your cut level more even. Good point.

    On my second season using my EGO and do like it a lot. I wanted to know if you clean the underside of the mower after every use? Do you use a double blade setup and/or do you have grass blades that are uncut and missed by the blade?

    • @MagnumVideos
      @MagnumVideos  4 года назад +1

      I usually inspect the underside, but there's seldom anything that needs cleaning. It doesn't seem to get clumped up and all stuck to the underside like my previous gas mowers. I do have the double blades that came installed on it, plus there was an extra blade that I stuck in a cabinet for now. When I'm cutting on the highest setting (7) I do notice a few missed grass blades, when the grass is very tall. On the next lower setting I don't have that issue.

    I just mowed my lawn for the first time with a new ego mower (self propelled new model with 7.5Ah battery) and I kept cutting off on me when I got to thicker areas of the grass. It would bog down and then just shut the blade motor off. Is there something wrong with my unit??

    • @MagnumVideos
      @MagnumVideos  3 года назад

      How much are you cutting off? You don't want to cut more than 1/3 of the blade length. It's possible you're trying to cut too much at a time. Also, if you let go of the bail (or whatever that metal rod is called, it will kill the motor. You have to keep it depressed the whole time or the motor stops. The only other thing I can think of is that it might be overheating. You should get a red indicator light if that's the case. Hope that helps. Let me know what you figure out.

    They should have a mower / power station combo, since they are both better with the biggest batteries. In an outage, run the gas generator a few hours (during the day) to recharge the batteries or have solar, then run the frig and led lights the rest of the time. That is my thought anyway.

    I purchased the original EGO Mower LM2000S, string trimmer and leaf blower back in 2014 and have not had one problem with any of the products. Myself and two neighbors decided to split the purchase (we have small yards and it made sense to share the equipment) as we were spending $20/week/each for lawn service. We never looked back and were very happy with our decision. 7 years later and only one of the four 2.5AMP HR batteries has died just about a month ago. Out of 100 points, I give the EGO Mower 93 points. The only negative I could find was the suction/lift of the mower was slightly less than a gas mower, but this was the first EGO mower.
    Now what I cannot understand about this video is why not being able to drown a product in water is considered the "dirty little secret". Bunch of horsesht IMO. Things get dirty, wipe them down, who cares if you can't hose down a product in water...in the end you still need to use a brush or towel to loosen the dirt.

    Just thought I'd share: (LM2130SP, purchased Feb2021): No issues in 2021...in 2022 it simply cuts off while cutting. It appears to run for approx. 20 minutes then it shuts off and won't restart (Battery goes through 1 to 2 led indicator lights). But it will restart after some rest time: 15 minute rest, it will run for about 2 min. 45 minute rest, it will run for 10 minutes or so. Mind you I only took note of these types of times just once before taking it in. And I'm not cutting through overgrown grass here, I'm bagging very little clippings, probably even shorter than the 1/3 rule this time of year. The underdeck is clean, nothing there. Did this to me on 3 separate consecutive occasions this season (Mar/Apr 2022). It's not the battery, as I have swapped batteries and both work fine in the second piece of equipment (string trimmer). Also, nothing appears to be hot as for as I can tell and nothing out of the ordinary happens before or after, it just shuts off. I called EGO and they referred to me to their authorized warranty center (an hour away). I turned it in on 20 Apr and explained what it was doing to me. I called them today (27Apr) and they can't seem to replicate my issue. Which I was afraid of. The associate I spoke with said they went through several batteries and been going back and forth with EGO regarding my issue. But if they can't replicate what's happening with me not sure what else can be done. I guess, they are talking with EGO to see if any other customers are having similar issues this this lawnmower.

    • @MagnumVideos
      @MagnumVideos  2 года назад +1

      Wow. I haven't heard of that issue until now. I hope they get it figured out. The only thing that pops into my head is possibly some corrosion on the connection where the battery sits in the mower. But that's just a guess based on my experience with car batteries. Please let me know what happens and what is causing it.

      @@MagnumVideos I just wanted to share to see if anyone had my issue...will update.

    • @wiredawg2005
      @wiredawg2005 2 года назад

      Today (6 May), I received a call and they said they could not replicate the issue. They ran it through 6 charges and took it out back to cut grass and it operated fine. No control board issues, no wiring or mechanical issues they could find. I picked it up today and will see what happens. The tech did say about the only thing they did was clean out the grassy debris inside the casing, (I did not open anything, did not want to compromise the warranty), and they did say it had a lot of debris in there. My only guess was the debris build-up (grassy clipping, dust/fine dirt) was causing the mower to shut down, maybe the air flow became too restricted and the control board told it to stop, only guessing here. I keep it clean, blow it and wipe it down after every cut to include the undercarriage. But there's no way to check the inside unless one opens these areas...I simply did not want to compromise the warranty. I guess, I'll see how it runs here on out...

    Sooooo.......I can count on this for about an hour of run-time with drive, maybe a little longer without? This looks like it will serve my needs. I'm tired vaping crank case oil everytime I use my old combustion mower. I'm not going to get a new engine, I want to go electric. This mower will probably mow as much area on a charge, as my old mower does on 1 tank full of gasoline. They didn't make it easy to do an oil change on my mower, because there is a blade clutch/brake assembly, so the drain plug is in the side of the engine, rather than underneath. Oil changes cannot be made easier, than eliminating the need entirely. As far as cleaning off the mower, just blow it off with a leaf blower, if you have one.(good enough for me, a mower is not a symbol of status)
    Thanks for sharing this video, this will likely be my next mower. I do have one question: Does it have a rear grass catcher bag? I want a "rear bagger" type mower.

    Here are my 2 little dirty secrets. 1) The handle must be fully extended for use. The lawnmower won't work unless it is fully extended. That makes the full length of the lawnmower too long to fit in my storage shed. I have to slide it in and extend it for each use. This concerns me that it is a potential failure point, and an extra action I'd rather not have to do. I don't understand why this restriction exists. 2) After I use the self propelled feature and I let-go the handle that activates self propelling I must push the mower forward a few inches to release the self propelled mechanism, if I don't the rear wheels stick and don't free wheel.
    Aside from these two negative comments it is the best mower I've ever owned or used. Battery life is no concern as I also have a 2.5MAh EGO battery which will power the mower through both my front and rear lawns (neither of which is very big - more like a typical California tract home.

    • @MagnumVideos
      @MagnumVideos  4 года назад

      You're absolutely right about the self-propelled feature. I have that issue too, and it's something everyone encounters at some point. Hopefully, they can get that redesigned or something so it isn't such a sticking point. As far as fitting in your shed, you can fold the handle down to a horizontal position if that would help.
