Been a purple belt for a few years and it’s so much fun, it’s where you really develop your style/game and become dangerous…even against brown and black belts.
Of all the belts I ever earned my purple belt looks like it's been through the wringer. Completely shredded and barely staying together. It was without question the hardest belt level I ever went through.
Lots of purple belts are underrated, or maybe underranked is the proper word. Young athletes - the talented ones - often improve more quickly than they get promoted, and they are still purple while they're actually somewhere between brown and black in terms of skill. Coaches just tend to kind of stop for a while before giving them the next belt at this point (various reasons for that, but it happens pretty often, in my experience).

Been a purple belt for close to six years. Took me four years to earn, and that was training six days a week, teaching beginners’ classes, and competing regularly. I’m close to 50 now and at a more competitive school. I’d love to earn a brown belt, but I think I’ll be purple for another few years.
Tugh school you got to. From what you reveal, its almost like your work for the purple is similar to the work to earn the black. Damn it. Whats it gone be like to work for the black, you be training 24/7, damn it.
@@tededo Well, I earned my purple at my first school, under a Chris Haueter black belt. I transitioned to a Renzo Gracie school after my first gym closed. The level of student is far higher at my new academy, and it’s about 80/20 no-gi. I had to unlearn many habits because all of students learn leg locks. So, it took me far longer than usual to earn my brown belt. I’m still discovering what works for me. Half-guard, clamp, a few basic sweeps and subs, and a few leg entries. It 49, I opt for sustainability. Plus, I feel awkward, because lots of younger, athletic guys kick my butt. Makes me feel like the belts are irrelevant.
The purple belt is cool. But brown-belt people are on a whole different level. It's like they have a six sense to your movement and effortlessly fold you using your own strength against you.
I knew you were going to say purple. Ive never gotten past purple. I need to go back to the gym. Once i started havig kids, all i do is work and take care of them. I miss bjj so much.

@@DonAngelo813forgot to add, yeah I can tap higher belts but it all comes down to the skill of the belt in facing, some blue belts imo are good enough to be purple belts and they whoop my ass 😂
That’s why he’s saying a purple belt winning is impressive. BJJ winning against any full sized adult who won’t put up with their bullshit is truly an accomplishment that few can pull off.
Quick question @@MattMGKwhy don't you need to learn a single leg take down to even get your purple belt. Also does your mom sew up the butt of your pants from scooting around?
When I started it seemed a good idea for blue belt to be a goal as it meant you're pretty solid for self defence. But watching blue go against purple-purple is way better. So many more options, creativity and cool movements.
On the verge of getting my blue belt and I’m so thankful that I have access to learn from purple belts and black belts that are helping me develop my growing BJJ skills.
This, taken to the extreme, is why I like beibg a forever white belt in an martial art i do. I dont care for tournaments so there is practically no downside as Im still alowed to learn everything but i have no responsibilities at all. Pure fun.
That’s a really good point. In Taekwondo, a black belt takes between 3-5 years according to World Taekwondo, but the founders made it clear that a black belt does not mean mastery. A 4th degree black belt signifies mastery in Taekwondo, and it takes between 15-20 years to achieve, much like the coveted Judo/Jiu Jitsu black belt
I'm a 2 stripe blue belt, and every time i train and rolling i am striving to get to my goal to purple belt level. Of course, after my purple belt, i won't stop their. My next big goal will be getting my black belt. Trying to stay injury free is what has slowed me down, but it won't stop me. Oss 🤙
Made the most evolution during my purple belt days by going back and refining basics that I thought I knew, which meant concentrating heavily on defense.
This just proves it really isn’t about experience when it comes to martial arts it’s about the skill, some people learn faster than others, I’ve been doing boxing for about 1 year and 7 months almost 8 now in September, I’ve never stepped foot in a boxing gym everything was self taught, my parents said I have to earn it by doing good in school if I wanna go to a boxing gym or get a punching bag that really upset me so I just started teaching myself because they forget about the promises they make and I knew that wasn’t gonna happen regardless, glad I’ve been practicing this whole time tho it was definitely worth it.
focusing on belts isn't healthy... at the end of the day this isn't what matters. "your belt only covers two inches of your ass. you have to cover the rest"
@@vibovitold I guess I understand the allure of achieving the next step. But I agree with you. Just keep grinding and those things will come in time. I’m a purple belt and I’m cool where I’m at. I hear people talking about brown, but I don’t care.

I can respect that idea, a competitor enjoys the lack of pressure from their lower belt. But the honor and wisdom that comes with a black belt ought to be appreciated too. You are a master, and a master must know when to teach and when to be humble. "game recognizes game" in a sense. You don't have the freedom to roll willy-nilly, but you have the spotlight and attention of those under you
Man! Still on my way to purple... 48yo Blue Belt here... had a hiccup in my path. Recuperating from bulging discs, most likely from my 20 years as a graphic designer so sitting on a chair for that long has taken a toll on my body, back and shoulders to be more specific. I'll get there though. Oss.

@@DonAngelo813forgot to add, yeah I can tap higher belts but it all comes down to the skill of the belt in facing, some blue belts imo are good enough to be purple belts and they whoop my ass 😂
This stuff is hilarious because if you sit on the ground in the middle of a street fight you’re getting kicked in the face and it’s over
That’s why he’s saying a purple belt winning is impressive. BJJ winning against any full sized adult who won’t put up with their bullshit is truly an accomplishment that few can pull off.
I mean yeah, if they're standing up. The idea is to have them not be doing that
Yea dude feel free to try that lol
What does this have to do with anything in the video?
For me purple was the fun belt because, to his point, there were no expectations.
Oss 🤙
Purple was the period of most growth for me. It feels like I learned more as a purple belt than I did as a white, blue, and brown belt combined.
Blue was my favorite. When I got to purple I felt like I made it to the top. The struggle was to get that sweet purple
focusing on belts isn't healthy... at the end of the day this isn't what matters.
I agree, Im having the most fun at purple. The no expectation thing is right on, and I also have no expectations for myself other than to progress.
I am currently a 2 strip blue belt in Bjj, i hope one day i can aquire the skills to eventually be honored with a Purple belt; given to me by my instructer. 🥋🙏
With about 17 years of bjj experience, purple belt was by far my favorite and funnest.
Purple... hands down. And 3rd degree black is a close second
Currently a blue belt. This shit is difficult. Tournament wins are amazing. Losses are devastating. I'm always injured. Sometimes I want to go back to white.
I still have my old shredded purple belt. Was a purple belt for almost 4 years until I made brown belt in about 2003. Fun times.
for sure! Purple was my favorite time in jiu jitsu. High up there to be a problem, but just right to make mistakes.
I'm already quite happy with the blue belt 😅 I like the training, can't be arsed with the "target in your back aspect". I just want to learn and roll. No expectations, just head free for a bit
Thats so true , as a whitebelt I was always idolizing the purplebelts.
That’s some Afro Samurai shit! 🔥
The Number 2 headband of jiu-jitsu
Agree. Was ok with staying purple forever at one time.
2 stripe purple here , been training for over 9 years , I have to say it's a great belt , it's great to finally never feel lost in whatever the scenario is , gi or no gi
For real man I feel ya. Same rank! And it’s funny how when I was a white belt, I’d see the upper belts and be like man those guys are wizards. lol
My dad’s a blue belt and is already dominating all the black belts it’s crazy he’s a insane wrestler and is now great at bjj he is 42 now I’m 13 I wanna be just like him
Purple has always been the royal colour.
I can respect that idea, a competitor enjoys the lack of pressure from their lower belt. But the honor and wisdom that comes with a black belt ought to be appreciated too. You are a master, and a master must know when to teach and when to be humble. "game recognizes game" in a sense. You don't have the freedom to roll willy-nilly, but you have the spotlight and attention of those under you
He forgot to mention that purple belts are the main target of white and blue belts, and the cannon fodder of the higher belts
As a yellow belt I see this as an absolute win
Great Video 🔥
Sounds like the E4 mafia of belts lol
Thats exactly what I was thinkin
I always loved wrestling people that were ranked higher than me. It was a lot more stressful wrestling after I was ranked first.
Oss.
Glad you added the "if you get the fight to the ground" after the "you can beat 99% of the earth" 😂
Sincerely a Judoka ❤️
I’ve had my blue belt for a little over a year now, a lot of up’s & downs but i can’t even imagine being a purple belt yet
I will definitely look at gforce in the future! Love supporting small companies.
man i disagreed with him at first but hell he convinced me in a short time. valid
I hate having a energy that makes you feel ,you can’t lose to anyone or make you feel like a king
I despise people that feel that way in the gym
Im already 1 year and a half in the blue belt. Its being tough days since I’ve earned it, but here we are day by day getting troughs the injuries heading to the purple belt
