I recommend watching the YT video: "Affordable Funeral Alternatives" which lays out an array of choices. All my family members who have passed over the last 25 years all chose direct cremation. Both my former wife, and myself, have chosen to be direct flame cremated at our passing, all pre-paid, to avoid last minute confusion to anyone.
These are very good tips! Remember this, when it comes to funerals! Funeral Home Directors and their associates are not your friends! They are very much like car dealerships! They are there to try and abstract as much money from You, as possible! Never ever feel guilty about how much or how little you spend on your loved ones! These people are not here to pay your bills, nor are those who come to the funeral! You are doing the best you can without their help, so its not about impressing others! I am from Ontario, Canada and we have something called The Bereavement Authority of Ontario that you can contact for information about funeral homes, prices and unfair and unconscionable sales practices! Remember also, to take your time and don't be pressured! Also and most importantly...Do not sign a contract or put money down without looking at all your options...it is a tactic to prevent you from getting your money back, if you change your mind!
Where on earth does a cemetery cost 20K?! The grave(s) I got for my parent(s) was only $2,300.00 each and that included opening/closing, vault, marker and perpetual care.
Joe Franks that certainly is a great value! There are a couple of cemeteries here in Houston that can get insanely expensive. For example, Memorial Oaks Cemetery’s starting price for a single plot, not including opening/closing or an outer burial container, is $10,000. That is the LEAST expensive option in that cemetery. That same cemetery also has plots available at over $100k in their “Lake Estates” section. On the other hand, there is a cemetery in Tomball (just north of Houston) that plots start at $850 with the opening and closing at $795. That cemetery also does not require an outer burial container. We refer many families to that cemetery and it helps greatly in cutting costs. At the end of the day, it is all about your preference and what you are comfortable with. The location of the cemetery plays a huge part in what charges you can expect. Thanks for reaching out!
