I WORKED WITH DENNIS IN THE BIG HOUSE (ENGINE 85) 1967 THRU 1976. I AUTHORED "WHEN THE BRONX BURNED" AND "THE USUAL" ABOUT THOSE GREAT YEARS AND THE HELL WE CONFRONTED. UP THE FDNY AND ALL THE BROTHERS I SERVED WITH.
This episode of Gettin Salty, deserves to be put in the hall of fame of podcasts. Dennis Smith cut through the Norman Rockwell crap, for the general public, and gave people a visceral and vicarious dose, of what being a firefighter really is. The book itself holds up, even today. God bless Dennis for all he's done to help emergency workers get their story out.
I will never forget meeting Dennis on several occasions ,once while i was recovering from burns in the Washington Hospital Center from fighting a fire in MD and again later once i got out. I had read his books but never thought i would ever meet one of the greatest firefighters to put on the uniform, It is with great sadness to hear of his passing he will live on in our memory forever.. R.I.P
Dennis Smith's book is the reason I am still a volunteer firefighter. He is the first author I am aware of who put firefighting on the map. He showed the public what it was like to be a New York City fireman. RIP Dennis
What a great pleasure to see Dennis again ... Wish I had seen it live. I read the book 15 times, and it was the reason I started firefighting in 1976. Each time I read it I got something different from the book. The sign "This could be the night" always meant to ME that tonight could be the night the Supreme Sacrifice might be made. The final story about the lost child in the firefighters arms brought tears to my eyes, and still does to this day. RIP Charlie Godspeed my brother.
Thank you so very much for doing this. Having just hearing the news of Dennis passing this helped in taking a bit of the pain away from seeing IMHO the greatest spokesman I have ever known for the common firefighter in what's claimed to be his last known interview.
One of your best podcasts gentlemen I'm from small town in maine but we always loved fdny and its history thank you for sharing with us your stories and may god keep watching out for fdny
My 1st experience with "82's" was a readers digest version I found a paperback copy a month later and at 15 or 16 I started Friday Evening and Finished the book By 4 pm Sunday afternoon... Never had i Ever read anything Like this book Couldn't put it down I was a Vollie for 15 years before I got serious again and began testing for the 2nd time in my life Took 3 tests in about a week and ended up hitting the lotto twice One was a dispatchers Job which Help keep me Available for the real job which came after a couple years , Dennis Even influenced me To take up and play the Bagpipes so for getting a half Italian and half Acadian American to do That successfully I again have to Thank Him,
Such a class act with such a great attitude toward the negatives that he has faced! I used to take FireHouse Magazine, and I had no idea Dennis Smith started this magazine. I have subscribed to Fire Engineering for decades. Fire House is a great magaizne!
Those same people that threw bricks at firefighters riding on the back step would be rescued by the same exact firefighters they threw the bricks at with out the firefighters even thinking about the bricks they threw that's what makes FDNY and all firefighters thru out the country so amazing. No matter what you throw firefighters will never hold a grudge towards you.
It is so sad seeing the once so physically mentally emotionally strong and formidable during some of the toughest times become so frail and weak yet still filled with such a plethora of knowledge experiences exposures to an unbelievable period in history, a period in which so few can fathom to what it takes to encounter and successfully manage! We should never foget about those that have forged and accomplished so much in the fire service! Situations that the majority of others could never come close handling!!! I would love to sit for hours talking to this level of exposure to the fire service!!!
Same here I went into the fire service in 1980 and reading Engine Co. 82 was the first fire book I read and re-read and re-read....this book drove me to want to emulate FDNY firefighters!
Been ghosting lately boys busy with graduations and so forth but when I come back the shows are still stellar! Missing the job still and always will. What a privilege to wear same uniform as Dennis and how lucky I am. Keep it up brothers. Great work.
When I started my fire department professional career it was Engine Company 82 that I first read and kicked started me wanting to be a firefighter....just like a FDNY firefighter!
I wanted to be an airline pilot since I was four…everything aiming that way. But when I read Dennis’s book I seriously considered being a firefighter. Ive read it three times since, but when on to fly airliners.
I love 31 truck (lafrance) it looks like they have added the enclosed roof to the open cab I am assuming due to the violence and threat to the firefighters?
"Why would a guy fish everyday if he doesn't eat fish" - Dennis Smith. Well, actually, I spent over six hours on the water fishing and then came home to do yard work and was so tired from being in the sun all day that I actually missed watching this episode live, and missed catching up with my Gettin Salty Leatherhead brothers and sisters in the live chat. I never keep the fish I catch, though I love fish, but it is a very cathartic activity, I always feel better after spending a few hours fishing, even if I don't have a very successful outing. Will someone who knows Mr. Smith please take him out fishing sometime. I can't believe he has NEVER gone fishing before. What a great episode, a little different than the normal Gettin Salty episodes, but what a remarkable man with great accomplishments and stories, I enjoyed every minute of of the show (as usual)!!

Dennis Smith was a real deal New Yorker. Born in 1940. Grew up in the East '50's. Great neighborhood full of characters...

Dennis Smith is a wise gentleman. Has seen it all in his days. One of a kind.
Dennis Smith's book is the reason I am still a volunteer firefighter. He is the first author I am aware of who put firefighting on the map. He showed the public what it was like to be a New York City fireman. RIP Dennis
This man and the instructors I had in the volly academy are the reason I'm a career firefighter today.

Great podcast, living legend right there. Every fireman should read Report from engine company 82.
It should be required in every academy or probation period

Awesome !!!❣️
Dennis' famous book warped my mind into such an obsession for firefighting that only an act of Providence could relieve it. Lol.

I have a question, Is Deputy Chief of 11 Richard Picciotto still around, if so Do you think you could get him on the show,
