Thank you for this. I've been pulling my hair out trying to use my Elgato with retro games and could not figure out WHY the game was coming through as a stretched 16:9. Not one other guide or even tech support said my upscaler was the issue (literally using the cheapest one you said NOT to use). I'm going to go get a RetroTink now so I can stop hating new technology. XD

I have been dabbling in retro games for the past 3 years or so and im only just now starting to figure out how scalers and capture cards work thanks for this easier to understand explanation. By the way i love me some megaman or rockman as he is known here in japan.

The MINI AV2HDMI looks similar to a brand I use called Digiteck, except it doesn't stretch it to 16:9 it costs roughly $30AU. For sure good if you have a lower budget
Hi James, I just found your video, for me I use the Avermedia Game Capture HD II because it records PS2, PS3, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. For older consoles like PS2/3 I just needed to get a Component cable, on PS2 it doesn't record in 1080p but I think it has a decent video quality (you can see on my Splinter Cell videos). As for PS3, it does record in HD but there's a catch, for ex: if the Game is in 720p you can only record in 720p but if it runs at 1080p you can record in 1080p. This week I bought more PS2/3 Games and I want to record more Gameplays so I will keep using that capture card for a little longer. For PC I'm using the Avermedia Live Gamer Ultra 4K, I got it last Summer. All the best to you.

Does the Retrotink 5x Pro offer any improvements over this one for streaming like this? Also, could you upscale to 1080p if you wanted to?
How does all this stuff work with the infrared console guns for games that require them though?
Does the gv-usb2 bypass the need for an upscaler?

I loved playing Super Mario Land and The Lion King games on our Super Nintendo system..
I bought and now use a HDMI converter for newer TVs like I have and it enhances better graphics for the ps2 is that fine for streaming you think ?
I've got to say my favorite retro game is Super Mario Bros 3. I got a version of that game first on the super nintendo and later on for my gameboy sp. As a kid I was able to speed run that thing I don't even remember how I learn all the little secrets 😁
i love old console i have begun live streaming playing on the orginal Xbox. i do also have a 360 and of cause PS1-4.

Just use an emulator on your PC and you can literally capture the gameplay from stream labs

4:12 the expensive ‘line doublers’ don’t introduce lag, the monitor/modern tv introduce lag when they convert the signal. See RetroRGB RUclips channel on the retrotink.

I wish I understood technology.. I wish I were smort. But my fav retro game is prob Sonic but esp Sonic & Knuckles and then plugging the other Sonic games into it to play as Knuckles.

Crash bash from the PS1 crash tag team racing from the PS2 I don't think these games will ever come back I like other games as well but I can't remember them off the top of my head these are just the two that I keep talking about and wish they'd come back possibly with a remake with online capabilities and possibly more characters to unlock

Is there anything better than the elgato because every time I use it that thing crashes or overheats and shuts down and f**** up my video quality it even shuts off so that's why I hate elgato so is there anything better than garbage el gato

I tried the mclassic but I wasn't overly fond of how I processed a lot of games. CTR actually looked pretty great, but a lot of games just seemed a bit off to me. Personal preference thing.

So why can’t you just use an emulator?
1) I much prefer the experience on original hardware with a CRT, since it's the way I grew up experiencing these games.
2) Emulators are in a bit of a legal gray area.
Mostly the first reason, but the second reason is nice to have covered.
@@JamesChats it's definitely possible to emulate games 100% legally, but i also like playing on real hardware for the same reasons you do

I prefer playing. on original hardware with a CRT TV. It's how I experienced the games growing up, and the reliving that experience is what's most important to me.
