Great drummer and probably the most influential drummer ever in Latin America, not only because of his drumming but also because Maná is very very popular in all LA. And I have to say, a very humble, honest and down to earth man. I had the pleasure of meeting him. And his drumming with De La Tierra is totally different. Amazing metal drummer and his double pedal chops are very impressive.
You are correct sir. I've been following him since the nineties and he's an amazing drummer... It is too bad he doesn't get the recognition in america!!!
De la tierra is amazing. But Mana is not known for being focused on drumming. It’s too pop. I still think Cuando Los Angeles lloran is their heaviest album, and Alex’s drumming shines. As far as Latin American drummers I still think the most influential is Dave Lombardo.
A lot of people don´t know of him, but he´s legit; Not one latinamerican drummer 40-42 years and below can deny the influence Alex has had on us drummers. I personally never been a fan of his band (mainly ´cause of their frontman and lyrical content), but his drumming was always the main instrument, he was always on the forefront of their music. That kind of drumming will never work in commercial usa radio, he´s not a pocket (playing for the song) type of drummer, he is always using his chops and that´s something us drummers appreciate. Hats off to Alex.
That's so interesting.... I never realized that. He's basically throwing his chops onto the songs. He's not a groove in the pocket drummer. I never realized that until you pointed it out. But yes hats off to Alex. He is good definitely in his style.
Alex Gonzalez is always humble, I started playing the drums thanks to him I saw him play with mana, I love his drums designed for him and his bands as much as mana and from the land
I was very privileged to have met Alex once. I gotta say he is exactly the same in person as he is on all these interview videos. Energetic and positive. Many say he is humble but I don't see it. I'm not saying that he's arrogant or prideful. I'm saying he's more like I said energetic and mostly sociable. Talks with every fan. Very respectable guy. His drumming I never realized is mainly chops. He's not a time keeper or groove player in the traditional sense/ pop commercial sense. Honestly he plays all over the place. Very technical which is good for the music. I love Mana. Fan of them since I was a kid. I gotta say he simply is good in his style. Very professional player. And exciting guy! God bless him.
I have to admit I've never heard of him (or his band), but he comes across as a really nice guy, obviously madly in love with drumming and a Beast of a Drummer! Hats off!
They’re Spanish rock. When I heard them the 1st time I was floored at the musicianship and arrangements. That introduced me to more rock bands from Latin America. I found they weren’t afraid to play with genres and got back to basic elements of good songs. The melodies were appealing and catchy. That was way back in the 90s. At the time the music industry in the USA really started to stink.
Dude he is one of the best drummers right now. His band started back in the late 80’s early 90s. Amazing drummer. He is also a songwriter, singer and he is in another band called De La Tierra, which is a trash metal band from latin america, with Andreas Kisser of Sepultura on guitars and Harold Hopkins from Puya on bass.

My all time favorite drummer. His style is so fresh and cool and he plays so clean! And also his chops are super creative. Im a guitar player who learned to play drums just to play his songs (not that I can nail them like he does)
Alex "El Animal" Gonzalez is a very good drummer. I would put him up against any other PRO drummer in the last 20-25 years (just to keep it real). He is just that good. Back in the day I used to rehearse to a stack of CDs. "Cuando Los Angeles Lloran" was somewhere in that stack always. Check out one of their live concert videos. Also, that is a righteous drum kit. I absolutely love the roses.
Dude is intimate with his kit, you usually see drummers have to reach and guess until they read the size of their equipment but he's just ringing without skipping a beat.
Mana is a great band, from 89 to 2002 almost every song they released was amazing. Their songwriting is shit nowadays but that happens to every band thats been writing for 3 decades. Still if you ever saw them live, youd see how great they are, they play clean as fuck. Best concerts Ive ever been to are Mana’s and Metallica’s. I also so Dream Theater live and Id put Mana over DT live. Amazing musicians.
Rarely shines? You gotta be kidding me. Almost every song they wrote from 89 to 2002 is amazing and Alex is a big reason why. His cops and fills bring their songs to life, its the subtle details he adds to enhance the songs, he absolutely does shine in Mana, not everything is meant to sound like q drum solo.
I always say his best drums sound in the studio ( not drumming) has been from the album "Sueños liquidos" Love that album. I remember firs time heard it was ack in Puerto Rico and Rock in Spanish was very popular but for some reason that album sound was what got into rock en español .
The best drummer in Latin America without a doubt, he is a great humble person, he always says that he started playing drums with cardboard boxes when he was 5 years old because his parents had no money.
what about Antonio Sanchez? he is technically more skilled than Alex, but at the end is just a matter of taste. Therefore you cannot say that Alex is better or worse.
Looks like a 26x18 but could be a 24x18 as yhore are his usual sizes, he also did a tour of this kit with Remo like 10 months ago and didnt mention the size of the kick 😂

You are a great drummer Alex, you have inspired me as a drummer!
My god, es una aplandora. Buena por el buen Alex. Saludos desde Colombia
All those little nods to Stewart Copeland :-) What a cool drum kit. Alex is one of my all time favorite drummers.

That's funny. I'm that way. I have to usually read the sizes of my equipment before I tell people what I play. Yes, Alex definitely knows by memory.
Love this guy

love this kit!!
to good to be in that band, great drummer

A great drummer whose talent rarely shines in Maná. With the exception of the album Cuando Los Angeles Lloran, which is their greatest album.

Alex is one of my fave drummers after The Professor Neil Peart
What are those white tabs on his toms and snare lugs for? I notice they are only on the lower portion of the rim.
stop locks - they prevent the tuning lugs from loosening while playing.

Esa configuración de la batería le pueden quitar toda la pintura, los logos y me daría cuenta que es la batería de Alex Gonzales "el animal"
alex, el elemento rockero de mana
Mana no es rock. Es pop
He is the mike portnoy of the Spanish rock
Now u can learn to play it
