    Exactly what I did. I bought an inexpensive Hawk gi on Amazon that I used for a few months. Once I felt committed to BJJ, I bought a Moya gi (and waiting on another to show up).

    I have only bought Gi's during Black Friday sales. Usually, they are over 50% off, so a $150 Gi would cost less than $70. Venum has great sales.

    Good to see you back!
    Did you manage to get over the shoulder issue you were having a while ago? I meant to ask.
    Got a partial RC tear I'm working around right now so was interested to know.
    Ps. Would be good to see a supplement video at some point. I'm always interested in what physically active people use to keep going & keep the energy levels up in their 40s & beyond.

    I am mostly worried about durability with a gi. My very first gi was the cheapest one I could find on Amazon and the only reason I got rid of it recently was our cat peed on it and it was impossible to get the smell out. It was extremely durable and had almost no wear or tear on it. In comparison to other high end name brands it was better in that regard.

    Depends on who you are. I started BJJ two years ago and I was told an A5 should fit me, so I purchased the cheapest one I could find, Elite. The jacket barely fit, and the pants were too tight. I gave away the pants to another guy at the gym, and a few months later I gave away the top (it never fit right).
    Fuji all-around gi came in A6, so I got one of those. I wore it for quite a while and it lasted pretty well, but it started to be too big on me and it wouldn't shrink (it was a cotton / poly blend). The pants were a bit tight when I first got it, so I got pants from another brand from ebay. I donated the A6 top but still have the pants from it - they fit me now.
    I bought another brand that was all cotton on ebay that came in A6, and I still have two of them; I shrank them as much as they could be shrunk. They're slightly big on me but I can wear them still. The one I wear the most has some stitching issues now on the top, and pilling on the legs.
    I can now wear A5 top, depending on brand; most A5 legs are a little tight so I stick with the A6 legs I still have. I'm mostly cycling through Fuji & Tatami tops, with a Datsusara every so often. According to the scale at the gym, I'm down to 280#, which is 70# lighter than when I started. I did a tournament in November when I was still a white belt, and was a little disappointed when the scale said just over 300# for the gi division and 299# for the no-gi when I weighed in. Obviously the one at the gym is a little bit off...
    Tatami recently had clearance sale and I bought some gis for $40 each. Probably one of the only good things about being my size is it's often the last to sell so it gets marked down frequently. The bad part a couple years ago was actually finding stuff that would fit. You like Origin, but the largest size they have for pants is 42...which would definitely fit around my waist now but wouldn't have back then. One of the many reasons I've not tried them is I don't know if they'd go around my thighs (they're down to 30" around but that's still pretty big).
    I honestly don't know whether I prefer light or heavyweight gis yet. I'm leaning towards heavyweight gis because I don't have to worry about weigh-ins in my weight class and I'm slower than basically everyone else anyway. I may decide differently when summer rolls around again, but I've not felt a huge difference even between the Tatami 550 GSM's and the Fuji 300 GSM's that I have. I like the Datsusara I have but it's a little tight still. I'm going to donate the A6 tops and maybe when the bottoms wear out the A5 bottoms I have will be loose enough not to bind me when I'm rolling.
    __
    Long story short, if you're buying for kids who are growing, get cheap because they'll probably not wear out before they're outgrown, and if you think you can lose some weight, get cheap because you might fit the next size down after some training as well.

I have to figure out bjj as a 42 y/o with a minor torn labrum in right shoulder (no surgery yet, just physical therapy for life :)) Learning quick I have to roll less and do more beginner technique drills until I can be more efficient and not tweak the shoulder. Are there gyms that allow origin Gis? Gracie Barra does not. I'm getting one as a gift. Told my gym coach I can't wait to wear my Origin Path Gi, he said that's only allowed during open mat, not classes...corporate won't allow non-Gracie Barra gis. I saw one of the jackets had Humanitia logo on it on their review page. can you sew on gym patches? I'm also 3 classes into my gym. Thanks.

    • @midlifebjj
      @midlifebjj  2 года назад +1

      Yes...I've never heard of a gym that didn't allow Origin gis...so weird but I've heard that Gracie Barra gyms are strict on a few weird things...well, its probably a money thing...One of my old coaches used to teach at one of the schools and told me some stories. You can wear Origin Gis in competitions (including IBJJF) so not sure why they won't allow them other than money. Yes, you can have patches sown on when you receive the Gi. Hope this helps.
