Welcome to the THIRD episode of my Oxbridge Application Series! 📌 In this episode, I shared my Cambridge personal statement alongside the previous versions and what I've learned throughout writing it!

About the series:
In this series, I will be talking about the process of applying to Oxford/Cambridge or other UK universities. From preparing yourself to researching your course, writing a personal statement, getting your recommendation letter and dealing with (*touchwood*) rejections. I named it Oxbridge in specific because I only applied to those universities for my Master, but these tips and advice are generally applicable to most UK universities!
I recently got accepted into an MPhil programme at the University of Cambridge and I thought, given that I had gone through the process of applying, there are tips, lessons learnt, and perspectives that I wanted to share with future applicants! Plus, when I first started applying, there wasn’t a consolidated resource dedicated to sharing "insider tips" about applying to Oxbridge especially for international students, and I hope that this series will be helpful for people! :)

In your opinion, if during the first year I was not able to get a first-class average (I got 63 average during the first year and 76 during second year), should I say in the additional information section that the pandemic did not help me to get the first-class during the first year? Or would it be better to talk about my leadership skills and my commitment to one of my university's societies? I just do not want to find excuses and seeming grave to who is reading (even though my first year was kind of turbulent by coming back to my respective country in the middle of a pandemic). What do you suggest I should do?
Firstly there’s definitely no right or wrong in this situation - and I do agree with you to not find excuses. This is just my personal take so take it with a pinch of salt, but I’d see how much of an impact I made towards that society. If it’s a significant impact then yes I’ll definitely highlight it.
If there’s truly nothing else, and you want to touch upon the pandemic topic, I suggest avoiding shaping the narrative like “because of the pandemic, my score is …”, instead what I’d do is frame it as: “despite the pandemic and the challenges that came with it, I managed to…”. There’s no need to go into details about the negatives of the pandemic because everyone experiences it! Not saying that I’m disregarding how challenging it must have been for you, but think of this “additional info” space as a way to share something that is unique to you
Hello Viancqa, I will also apply for Development and my interest is the same as yours. I graduated with Education. Now for the university application, I have to write a research proposal. But I am struggling to select a topic. Can you give me some ideas, please? And thank you for this invaluable video it will be a great help in producing my sop.

Hi! I am pretty sure they’re the same thing. They have the same purpose - to see why you want to do the course - and similar lengths (about 500 words).

thank you for the tips and tricks!! if you don't mind me asking, how specific is the condition on the offer? like 67%? Also, as first year results doesn't count in the degree, do you think if first year results matters for reaching the minimum entry requirements? especially when I will only have first and second year results when applying. Hi can you expand what do you mean by 67%? Is it the score?
And yes first year results matter because you will be submitting all the transcript to the date you’re applying (plus the rest when you get them)
@@Viancqa thank you so much for your reply, because on the website it mentions ‘strong upper second class’, if they were to give a conditional offer what does it look like?
@@anthonylau2980 I wouldn’t know exactly but aiming for First class would put you in a safer position :)

This is really helpful! I plan to apply to MPhil POLIS but it requires a research proposal, not a personal statement. (which I think it’s more complicated) Do you have any suggestions regarding the research proposal for Cambridge’s master degree application? 🥺
Hey! I don't have any experience with research proposal sadly, but if you search on RUclips for "Research proposal Cambridge", I saw there are lots of vids which may be helpful!

Yes! The prompts are usually different for each course (especially for Masters) as well :)

it seems that your statement is less than 3000 characters while from what I know , the average required number of characters is 5000 and sometimes it could reach 7500 characters, doesn't this effect the evaluation of the statement ?
