If you follow me on IG you know how intense my love-hate relationship with this degree is. Just wanna emphasize that nothing has made me happier in this past year than studying this seemingly contradictory and problematic area of study hahaha. I genuinely love it, despite my frustration, and hope more people would enter this degree for the sake of learning and unlearning.

Watching this as an Indonesian civil servant who plans to choose dev studies for postgrad, I feel like I'm listening to my own rants. I told this to my therapist and she said, "It's great we have someone like you in this world, but we need to realize that there are some things that we can control and other things we can't control. So that's okay, stick to your moral compass, because lasting change takes time."

thanks a lot for this video, especially the rant towards the end. I think a lot of us are in a similar situation and it feels like so many are oblivious to systemic issues and it's incredibly disillusioning learning more and more and more about how dire of a state the world is in. So it's really nice to hear someone else struggling through it too.
Hopefully we can all make a tiny dent towards meaningful change!
This is really inspiring. You touched one of the issues that is quite salient for me. My major preoccupation is that after amassing knowledge through this highly prized education, how do one make use of it to change the world or at best change our respective corners?
You have chosen a career path that would enable you to produce knowledge and further enrich the existing body of knowledge. My focus is to enter the real world of policy formulation and implementation where greatest impacts would be made on people, institutions and systems.
I am from Nigeria, currently studying political science. I am in my ultimate year. I am considering settling for Development Studies for my grad degree.

I did it on my undergraduate, combined with Business.
Bachelor of arts Development Studies with Business Administration. I had an opportunity to acquire knowledge in different fields such as Research methods and Statistics, Trade and Industrial Policy, Economic globalization, Entrepreneurship and Development, Agriculture and Food Security, Political, Social and Economic Development, Marketing( Principles and Service), International Businesses Management, Human Resource Management, Business Environment and Entrepreneurship and Small business management.. Plus I did certificates in Project Management and Planning, and Monitoring and Evaluation. I found the combination more interesting more than I expected 🔥👏.

Hello! I am from Mexico, I am studying physics, but I met a friend who was from a good economic position and she went to Canada to study international development studies, I always wanted to study something that would allow me to contribute but the social sciences seemed totally corrupt to me, without an exact directed direction and I did not like the subjects of foreign trade and law, medicine seemed like a beautiful branch to me but it is difficult and expensive to enter medicine, but I felt very moved by this friend who wanted to contribute and my way of life changed. see the world because I always wanted to do something for others but I never knew how and in Mexico this degree does not exist, I didn't know it existed, but I hope I can get a master's degree.

This is such an insightful video, can you please let me know if there are any students who have GPA below the minimum entry criteria?
It's like I'm listening to my own problems.I'm doing a postgrad in my most passionate area, but instead of receiving the feeling of contentment , I'm starting to feel depressed. It's not like I'm diving right in for this field with all the glorified thoughts in my head as I already have a few years of work experience beforehand. My degree is also on theoretical type (which comes with a number of benefits of course), but it gets too critical that I even don't know where I'm going next within this field- I'm terrified by all the issues and immoral things happening around it. Is it normal for postgrad students to feel in this way about their subject?
You’re definitely not alone! I learnt the hard way that it’s important to be balanced in your opinion (if you want to of course) I find being too [insert adjective] often limits my movement in terms of career choices. What this degree taught us, I’d say, really shapes our idealism, but it really does have to be balanced with realistic expectations of the world. Critical doesn’t always mean we can’t do anything, I also learn to not let it paralyse me (on going process!). Good luck :)
Count me in, and my other friends! When we finish the class, we always have a conversation about the issues happening in society, but we actually don't know what to do. We become depressed, and we feel the dark world we are living in. But then we laugh, and that's it. I am sharing your video with my friends now to let them know and join a league of DSer.

Hi there from Indonesia! I plan to also continue my master's in development and I see you are currently attaining development studies at Cambridge. I was just wondering about other university preferences in development studies that you considered prior to choosing Cambridge. Also, would you say that your program highlighted more theoretical approaches than practical ones? Because I noticed there are several universities that also offered Development Practice (practical) instead of Development Studies (theoretical). Thank you!😊Glad to know you!
Hi, I considered Oxford’s but ended up applying to their Econ degree instead. But I know Sussex is very well known for their Dev Studies degree.
Cambridge’s is definitely more on the theoretical side. Some practical modules like statistical analysis for example, is offered as a free extra class you can take. Econometrics is a “borrowed” class from Econ MPhil so the slot is limited.

During the strikes, we didn’t have any teachings and they also didn’t give us any materials to “compensate” for the absence of lectures (this is quite a normalised practice apparently). But some teaching assistants and one particular lecturer did arrange classes regardless (super thankful for them for doing it!!).
Re. future career, yes policy-making related roles are definitely in my pipeline! 😁
@@Viancqa thanks for ur reply! Totally understand how frustrating it is to have HALF of the teaching hours taken away because of riots. Its totally unfair for students, but also i understand their plight. Its just a very unfortunate situation and i hope that it wont happen in future years.
Is the dissertation still optional or have they made it compulsory now?
Also, how focused is the degree on the global South?
I think what needs to be understand is that the society is corrupted as well as humanity itself, but as more people become aware of the issues in the society, it is already a kind of "victory" on the side of good. Imagine the people who listened to your channel also starting to see the "murder" and eventually it will be judged. (dunno if this makes sense)

I started thinking in your perspective about how depressing it is being in a helpless situation but, knowing what's happening in world. You are right...
But, I felt, Even Police department may feel the same seeing helpless crimes around them. Even Doctors may feel the same seeing patients dying with uncurable diseases. Even soldiers will think, why the hell border wars happen and affect people's life...etc
So, how about taking that negatives into some motivation to do atleast what can we do in our potential , and feel Happy for small changes . And balancing our mental health & our nature of being development student.

Hey you’re totally right!! It’s all about perspective, and also phases.
When I was filming this video, I had felt so bitter about this degree and scared about the prospect of the world hahaha hence the negative take on it..
But coming out of this degree I realised exactly what you’re thinking. We just have to do our best, mitigate the risks and work on the next best option - and the next best thing doesn’t always have to change the world.
