🎓Skillshare Personal Statement Masterclass
What's different about this course?
I'm not going to tell you what I think is going to work. I'm going to show you what does work.
What to expect?
For a lot of us, the personal statement is often the most important thing that we'll ever write. It's the thing that'll determine the next 4-6 years of our lives. So it's easy to see the importance of making sure it's the best it can be. And that's exactly what I'm going to be helping you with.
In the first few lessons, we're first going to be looking at the expertly designed 8 pillar framework based on personal statements of students who were accepted into Oxbridge and other top ranking universities. These 8 pillars will form the basis of you thought process and help you decide what to include in the personal statement.
We're going to spend some time learning how best to reflect on experiences in ways that show the reader that you are someone who is capable of extracting lessons and developing for the better as a result of it.
We're going to learn about strategies like the personality pillar and writing style to help your personal statement stand out and shine.
Importantly, we're going to be linking all this theory to carefully analysed real life examples from past successful personal statements.
Then once we've decided what to include, we're going to go through the structure.
We're going to be looking at proven syntax and paragraph formulas that will ensure that every sentence you write has a purpose.
We'll also be learning how to structure the overall personal statement so that it flows beautifully and tells a story.
We'll also learn new strategies for cutting down your personal statement to fit the character count and how you can maximise what you say in the fewest words possible.
One of the biggest strengths of this video course, is that we provide several example personal statements each carefully broken down and analysed. And as each has come from students, now doctors, who have been accepted into Oxbridge and other top ranking unis, you can be confident that everything you learn has been tried, tested and shown to work every time.

You're so welcome!
Is it cool if I use the joke about starting with “ever since I’ve been a child”
BOLD but tbh I'd try to keep it a bit more pro than a bit too jokey if ygm
Maybe if your applying for clown school

I think your beggining is more natural and has more appealing to someone reading it.Ghis guy academic and boring statement will not get a pass.Be yourself and be natural.Copying some academics models is a no no for me.start with your sentence.
rewatched this at minimum 10 times and i'm not even writing a medicine personal statement (yet included a medical work experience in my statement loool)
haha thanks 🙏
I am presently drafting my personal statement for a postgraduate degree course, very helpful information throughout!!!
Thank you very much.
For applicants in 2022, we do not have the abundance and variety of work experiences that previous medical students may have possessed. Virtual work experiences, online courses are at least what we have, so how do we incorporate it in a way that still gives the message that we have learnt something valuable from it (like a real experience)?
This is definitely an issue for this cycle’s applicants and you’ll have a COVID box to explain your challenges probably like last year. The DO app has it alt least for sure this cycle. For the ps I would definitely still
Showcase foundational/ formative moments that offered you varied lessons along the way so not quantity there as much as quality. Good luck!
You all probably dont care but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost my login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@@romeoalaric4946
You can log in through your fb account.
Hope this helps.
Great tips but I think this approach is a little reductive. The statements you highlight do indeed show motivation and engagement, but additionally relay emotional intelligence, empathy and get-go to do something original. If you're going to be accepting students for medicine, you want them to talk about more than just what they themselves get out of it. You want them to show that they are interested in other people - what they want to contribute - and the statements you highlight show this very ably.
i was about to start mine with ever since i was a child
The way you started made me feel guilty😂
I’m so scared because I didn’t have much work experience except online because of covid :/
Uh lucky I literally have no work experience not even online
Introduction
1 motivation
2 engagement
Editing on point with this one!
Thanks bro 🙌
Waoh!!! Waoh!!! Writing a personal statement for Human Resources Management and this guidelines really are helpful. Thank you ❤️
What would you say the personal statement should be structured? So a paragraph for intro, motivation, engagement and suitability aswell as showing passion throughout?
Checkout the previous video!
You have incredible content! It inspire me and if I successfully getting LoA, it is because of you. I will work hard for it and I will tell you once I did it 💪💪
wonderful structure. no soul. robotic and antiseptic.
4:17 wouldnt the place you are applying to already know this information?? How would you saying this make you different to anybody else?
He is the guy the example every parent gives while torturing their kids😅 just kidding. Great work
Hi, I would like to know , if you've chosen two different courses (computer science and electronic engineering). How would you go about blending your personal statement and talking about each one?
PS: Thank you for this video
I have a similar question. I just finish my first degree in electrical engineering and I'm now planning to study computer science. Any advice on how to approach my introduction?
Thanks for your videos!
@@DML686 hii mind me asking how electrical engineering is, what does it mostly consist of? Is it nice
I need some help with my personal statement, help somebody anybody or just a body lol.seriously help please
I want to study accounting and finance but didn't had this sub in my A'levels how should I write it?
hi, how would you get around adapting work experience/engagement paragraph for non-clinical experiences (i.e.online)? I'm struggling to phrase my engagement in such a way that allows for things you would usually learn on a work experience placement!
also (sorry!!), how would you go about including engagement within times of covid-19, or the topic in general, as I don't want to exclude it nor waste space on mentioning something worthless either!
The quality just keeps getting better!!! Great tips and editing👌🏽
Thanks so much 🙌
I've been writing my ps now and ur videos are a blessing in disguise

How can I contact you through the social media.?
I'm going to apply this year ❤
can someone help me re-estate the first sentence but for computer since field instead of Medicine?
replace medical stuff with computer stuff!
@@DoctorShaene would that be enough for it to not count as plagiarism?
Does this apply to masters applications as well?
If you don’t have like a why us essay for them, I would consider ending with how you see yourself fitting at that program. Be specific about their resources, a class even a research initiative you could see yourself in or something you’d focus on. Good luck!
Great video. 3:08 Not sure about this example as it is missing punctuation. If you run out of breath, the sentence is too long.
Can you please review my personal statement?
What could i write in the engagement section if I havent done work experience?
Man, this is the ENORMOUS issue that I've come across at the moment to write this statement, and It makes me upset not having all those experiences and learnings that they all have :''''(, Do not know what to do
@Faith Hill Yes man, I have thought about it, but I don't know how to related to those academics subjects. I mean, I don't know how "being in a group of music" "being on a band" or "playing volleyball" will help me to show how I am looking forward to entering into the pharmaceutical faculty of some university.
HAHA any piece of advice :D?
thanks
@Faith Hill LOL same here mate, writing an SOP to Oxbridge, and still don't know what to fill up in the work experience section.
VERY HELPFUL VIDEO!!! Thanks a lot :)

Could you please make a video on making a personal statement for a levels (for medicine subjects)
Not sure what you mean?
Doctor Shaene Like a video for GCSE students on a good personal statement/CV for trying to get into a good sixth form to study medicine based lessons; I am trying to get into Hills Road in Cambridge.
Ah I see - Yh absolutely all the principles that work for uni personal Statements will work for anything, I recommend checking out the Skillshare class when it’s out 🙌
Doctor Shaene Okay thank you will do - once I have completed it would it be okay to send it to you for just some feedback? This will probably be a while away but it would be helpful.
Sure email me doctorshaene@askcamdoc.com
How would you advise getting medical work experience in lock down. I've already done the virtual work experience but I'm looking for more hands on work experience in a hospital or care home. How would you advise I go about this in these circumstances?
Hmm no way currently I know off. The best options are the virtual experiences and joining these:
1. BSMS Virtual work Experience - Brighton and Sussex medical school has put together an incredible online package giving to an insight into the NHS which walks you through different medical specialities.
2. Observe GP - interactive video platform has been put together by the Royal College of GPs designed to give medical school applicants an insight into General Practice and primary care.
3. The NHS Explained Online Course - a free 8 hour online course by the King’s Fund giving you an insight into the structure of the NHS and challenges of working in the NHS.
1.Re-engage - a charity looking for volunteers to join their call companion service to provide some friendship to lonely and isolated older people
2.Covid-19 Mutual Aid - a service connecting people in the local area to help others who are more vulnerable or self-isolating.
3.The Sliver Line - a confidential helpline that provides advice, friendship and information to older people. They currently have an emergency appeal for volunteers.
4.Age UK - lots of different opportunities to volunteer to become a digital buddy, a campaigner or fundraiser for the Age UK charity.
Woah this is the best - I'm telling my whole school about you now!!!!
Haha legend 🙏🏽🙌 Best of luck!
are you from leicester?

Can I use acronyms or abbreviations in my personal statement?
Avoid if possible
Do you check personal statements ?
