I’m a dental school applicant. I have struggled during my last year of undergrad to put my personal statement together. Your advice is helping me to come up with how to plan my personal statement and lay a foundation for the interview process, because a question that seems to come up often is why the school was selected by the student. I’m so excited now to get writing. Thank you!!!!
My undergrad Thesis is not focused on the field of Communication Engineering but I have ten years of experience in Communication Engineering as a Radio Frequency Engineer. I want to do MSc in Communication Engineering under Electrical Engineering, do I avoid mentioning my undergrad Thesis in my Personal statement and dwell more on my professional experience? Please reply
I wonder if it has to be a professional reason. I have the best personal reason to go to this one school, but can I just write that in… professionally I really didn’t care much. It’s 21 century and if you want to learn something, just find the right book and call up a few people. Going to grad school for me is 100% for personal reason. I think I’m just gonna write it in.
what if you dont really care that much about making the world a better place ? Sounds like you just have to make it all up in your personal statement ? Lets be honest, its not like everyone on earth is actually going to try to wake up everyday and work towards making the world a better place. We arent all saints. Pretty sure no one can argue against this and no one will come with a counter argument
I think you should analyze what “making the world a better place” means to you. It doesn’t mean to sacrifice your life for others, whatever you imagine that to be. It can mean bettering yourself and creating something that YOU find meaningful, because surely others will derive positive meaning from your work. You can argue all jobs have this component of facilitating and helping some aspect of peoples lives (depends on your perspective). The nuance in the meaning of that quoted phrase can serve as something you explain in your personal essay because to YOU it is true, and hopefully they will see that your understanding of making the world a better place also resonates with others.
You can talk about your scientific interests and desire for mastery in the field you work in. If you want to be the best at something or the best you can be, that’s good, a competitive nature is okay as long as it’s powered by an interest in self betterment and the subject of interest. That’s just a guess, as the reason I want to study is very much to make life better for the people I’m serving (medical research, so patients).
Really helpful, Stacy! Just one question: if one is applying for a taught Masters with a dissertation component, how much detail about your prospective research do you have to go into in the SOP? Especially if it's tentative and you also want to demonstrate flexibility
hi! What made you change your mind and decide to start a master's degree? I've seen one of your videos where you explained going to grad school was not the best move! I'm just curious because I've been thinking so much about whether I should pursue that degree or not. Thank you so much this video was helpful!
Fantastic advice all around. These tips come in handy in various forms of communication, negotiations, etc. Align your values with theres, and focus on narrative over “resume recap”
Hi! I am lawyer from Venezuela trying to get into an LLM in the USA. I have no one to ask for feedback in regards to my statement of purpose. If I could send it to you, so you could review it, it would mean the world to me.
I graduated 2019 with a computer science degree. Haven't been able to get my first job and now considering an online masters in software engineering so that I can network and apply for internships as a student

What’s the difference between personal statement and statement of purpose?

Would you say that the Personal Statement and Statement of purpose asks for the same information essentially?

Sounds like a person like that isn't a great fit for grad school then lol
You might be a good fit for math related fields. Other fields want fake people who know how to play politics.

@Vineature its impossible for people to have that purpose as we live in the world that needs money
