- How to make DIY Solid Lotion, Body Butter, Massage bars, that are non-greasy or sticky, with full recipe. Plus, how to wrap, package and label your bars. They're great for travel or in your bag, and they also make a great lip balm too 😘 #bodybutter #diy #homemadelotion #solidlotion #skinfood
Basic recipe:
3 oz Coconut oil
3 oz luxury butter (I'm using a combo of Shea and Cocoa)
3 oz liquid oil ( I'm using a combo of Jojoba, Hempseed and or Almond oils)
4 oz Beeswax (you can use a bit more or less depending on how hard you like your bars)
1/4 t or less Vit E oil (I just used a squeeze)
1/4 t Carrot powder or Colloidal Oats
1/4 t Arrowroot powder (you can use all arrowroot, if you don't have carrot powder)
.2 oz Fragrance (I used approx. 4 ml) or Essential oils of choice (please use usage calculator)

I didnt have enough almond oil so i used grapeseed oil instead, the rest of the ingredients I already have! even the mold, tins and craft paper coffe filters!! cant wait to pop them out of the molds! This is a great recipe! I infuse my jojoba oil with calendula flowers which I grow myself for that extra healing element, I love the addition of the oats, have some to use up ;)
Ellen, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I made these lotion bars and they are the best! I used it on dry areas and the next day, I still felt the moisture softness where I had used the bar. This is better than any lotion or salve I have tried before. I also bought the adorable bee mold, but am thinking that I may like a 2oz bar instead. Wish they made the same mold larger. Thank you again!

I made these and I had some coffee filters just like yours however I got to thinking if I had something that would fit better and I discovered that I had some brown muffin liners and they fit perfectly and no need to cut. Just a suggestion. Thank you again so much.
Thanks! It's such funny timing that you wrote this.. I was just restocking my lotion bars today! I've tried the muffin liners and they do fit the tin, however I like the extra fluff in there for shipping with the coffee filters... But the muffin liners look really cute too!

I've tried your last recipe and I have to say - I love it!! I didn't have any dry ingredients there, but even without them the solid lotion is really good! It has brought me well through the year as a hand cream, because of the extreme amount of hand washing due to Covid-19, as a substitute for lip balm in winter - just for everything. Thank you, Ellen! This is a great tutorial and I appreciate your in depth teaching. I just made this recipe and used the same bee molds but it only made 9 & 1/2 bars. I have a digital scale and measured everything exact. The only difference is I did not add a fragrance oil. Not sure why mine came out less 🤷♀️.

I will try this recipe with Rice Bran Oil and Sunflower Oil. Will work out the percentages and cut it in half. Have some multi cavity molds that are small to try it out. They look so cute! ♥️🤍🖤🇹🇹

Ruth Ellen, nice recipe for lotion bars. I tried adding the arrow root powder, colloidal oats and even tapioca starch and rose hip powder, I liked them all. In different combinations too for different benefits. I like how it leaves a silk finish on the skin. Thank you for the inspiration. Be gone dry skin. The colloidal oat formula works great on facial sunburn or wind burn as well.

Hi Ellen, This was such a great video - thank you!! I tried to do solid lotion bars this week, I didn't use your recipe, but it is very similar. For some reason my arrow root didn't mix well. I even stick blended it at one point. It sank to the bottom and became very grainy. (insert sad face here) xxx
It helps if you mix it in during the cool down, it will suspend better. Also, make sure it’s a super fine powder.

( I wish) I have tried to make your recipe and several others and my lotion bars always seem to be too greasy. I live in Colorado and it is dry here and yet they are still too greasy. Thanks for watching! These bars are going to have a buttery/oily feel due to the ingredients, but you could try increasing the arrowroot powder and see if you like that finish.
Hi Ellen! I use that exact Beeswax 🐝 as of 2 months ago and I love it. Cutting into that big chunk of Beeswax would be challenging because it does get rock hard.

Grating beeswax will drive you buzzy!!!
Tip : You have massive Block of Bees Wax from a Friend, a Beekeeper etc... But you only need a Tad !?! No time to melt the whole darn thing !?! 😜
Get yourself a Deep Roasting Pan (maybe a defunct : non stick peeling off one, not fit for perfect cooking purposes) Add it to a Warm Oven that's finished doing a Big Roast, Bake, Cooking etc... We want that Hot Oven temps in that Metal and Shelving ! (Turned Off !) .... But its still warm enough to melt Wax.
Add that, and a Food Foil Container on it. Add your Block of Bees Wax in that Foil Container (Strong Reusable kind)... And allow a % of Melt, so you get a bit of Melt, say an Ounce or too. Or say 1/4 Inch Thick Piece. More time in Oven as it cools down, equals more Melt = More Wax ! More gets melted ! 👀
Once done. The cooled down Wax will be Brittle. Twist that Foil Container ... and you get Shards or Flakes of Wax !
Enough for a Hand Bar Recipe. Save Tray and Container, and the Block of Wax for the next used oven moment ! Simples. 😎
Here in Scotland to save on Waste Plastic, our Food Stores offer up "Mesh Draw String" Veggie Bags... to buy eg loose Carrots, Potatoes etc in. (Very Fine White Mesh Fabric, like Screen Mesh )
Each Baggie costs 30p (50C) they last for ages and ages, if you don't Heat (Melt material !) You hand wash them in Laundry Soda with a bit of Bleach. Keep labelled for eg Honey Strainer, for Wax only. You get the idea. 🤗 They are 'fairly' heat resistant, in that you can pour "Warmed Honey" through them (this filters out wax particles, dust, even odd Bee legs .🤭 When we harvest our Honey.) The same applies to our x3 Filtering of Wax process.(to super Pure Smoothness !) Eg Competition Grade for local Honey Show. We do process x3 times. Adding Kitchen Paper into last Bag / Pour !
.... Or use Ladies Tights, (Pantie Hose in USA ?)
Same filter effect and result.
These Baggies work great to filter Warmed Wax as well.✔️
Place the Bag semi-streched across your Jug, pour the Warmed Wax (not super hot !)
through it. Remove the Bag.
[Any Cold Wax debris, can be hand Squeezed, makes brittle pieces, turn bag inside out... And collect the bits. These can be wrapped in newsprint paper, make a twist... And use as firelighters ! 🔥.... Or use wax where debris particles are not an issue. Eg in DIY Wax Melts : re Shoes, Wood Polish, to Stop, prevent Squeaky Wood Doors, Draws just rub a flake on it, gone !
Or if your a Beekeeper, get your Smoker really Smokin ! That paper and Wax really lights up good ! No Stings on my watch ! However my Girls rarely Sting me, bar the odd one ! OUCH...q 😆
You can use your chopstick to pour into your mold with no worry about drips. Also I use a jewelry scale to weigh out my fragrance. I put the fo/eo container on the scale, tare it out and use a pipette to remove the amount needed for the recipe. Ardent follower, thank you!

I’m new to your channel and I just made these bars. I don’t know why but I got 11 bars and not 12, and I didn’t fill them to the rim. I ordered the same molds and tins and scale from Amazon so there is no difference in sizes, just a fluke I guess. But I’m very excited about these bars. I’m looking forward to what you have coming and I’m still looking through your videos you have posted.
