This works well! I vocalize in the morning and my voice feels free, released, and properly engaged. BUT, as the day goes on, my speaking voice becomes strained and stressed. Bad posture, perhaps, or tightness in the neck and throat? It's frustrating because I have to act and audition and my voice becomes very raspy and monotone-ish. My breath control is good, full, multi-dimensional, intercostal muscles and diaphragm working together... and then it all just sort of goes by the wayside. Thinking of Alexander Tech to help. Though I don't have a wide range over multiple octives, I'm a good singer. Second tenor, good head voice, low notes just aren't there and likely just due to what I was born with. But the raspy, strained voice that happens as the day progresses is disconcerting. I'm 60 but in very good health and physical condition. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. Love your videos and think I've seen all of them.
Are there any techniques that don't involve sticking your toung out? I get alot of tension in my throat and my voice teacher said she thinks I have tounge root tension. I'm not able to do any of the techniques she showed me to release the tension because I'm toungetied.
@@sunoftheyek8261They probably have a similar problem themselves and just don’t know the answer to it so they like the comment. I’m one of those people. Honestly the person who made the video should be responding to your comment as they are the ones who are likely knowledgeable on this and your comment is under their video.
Great video!!! Tongue tension is something I have really been working on! Question: Would this same exercise work with a straw (as just another tool to rest the tongue on?) Thanks so much! Looking forward to trying this!!! Can't wait for future videos! 😊
Yes, although a straw is a bit flexible and may bend too much to help keep the tongue curved and fronted. Give it a try, though, and see how it works for you.
Very helpful and very well explained! I am wondering if this technique can helps me to shape properly my vowels. When I sing I start moving my tongue and contracting and releasing it when I sing vowels. This has a big impact on the sounds, sometimes dark and I feel that my Larynx is moving a lot.
The short version: you’ve saved me. Thanks! 🙏 The longer version: FINALLY I know what that “terrible gaggy timbre with a horrendous vibrato in my passagio” tension is. Sometimes my chest voice is ok but this tension just KILL my head voice (I’m a male). Thinking it was just a lack of head resonance I just kept on trying “‘till it would work”. Didn’t work. And my chest voice just got as tense in the process. 😞 So long story short: you’ve saved me. See though I love to sing I’ve had big vocal problems - even on an everyday speaking - for a lot a years and just recently I’ve started to figure out just what it is (basically bad support, bad vocal closure and every possible tension you can have in your throat). You’re videos have helped me a lot with figuring how to handle it all. You’re so detailed, informal, pedagogical and always straight on point. This channel is something of a blessing.
Oh my gosh you guys i am not joking this frickin work! I've always been tied tounge since I was born. My mom said when I was little I would always stick my tongue out so I guess that's how I became tied tounge. Like, when I talk I will put my tounge between my teeth so that's how people couldn't understand me and yes, I was ashamed because I am a 13 yr old that was tied tounge ( before watching this video of course. ) but now I'm not anymore! This video help thank you so so much❤❤❤
Hi I have this stiffness in my Tongue and my speech sometimes sound like childish I also have this weird sensations of crawling or burning on my tounge , this is freaking me out from 3 months it's comes and goes. Can anyone help me is it serious? And I have no pain in my jaw or in my face
Hello, my dentist is suggesting I use a “tongue vibrator” to release the tension to the root (which is half way down the neck. is using the pencil as you showcase the same thing?
I'm studying opera and vocal performance right now and I have a HUGE problem with tongue tension. I cannot form a pure vowel for the life of me and I have tried so hard consistently for 2 years. I notice that my tongue will spasm when I watch it as I sing and there are two lines along the sides that come and go sort of like the portion of obliques on the abdomen if that makes sense. My tongue also sometimes has a small hole in the middle too. Are there ways to fix this? and do you know whats going on?

Hello!!:) I am really working on singing clearly so I am working on vocal fry, would you say that this is an excercise when doing right helps to sing clearly or from the vocal fry?
Interesting that you should ask about vocal fry. I just recorded a video this afternoon about singing low notes and within our chest range, and vocal fry is one of the exercises that I use for accessing the lower mechanism. There is some disagreement as to the benefits of vocal fry. I only use it to help speakers and singers access their M1 and to help release vocal hyperfunction. If you're using vocal fry then transitioning to a clean tone, it's probably fine. Give it a try and see how it works for you.
When I'm doing scales, I feel like My larynx is so tensed or is it the root of the tongue? When I relax, I can still feel a phantom tension. How do I get rid of that? Thank you ❤
There's a book I've been reading and there was one part that said that there are muscles deep in the tongue that can still be tensed while singing, due to years of various emotional stresses. If you take a clean finger, and gently move it down the center of the tongue while relaxing the tongue as your finger moves, you can feel every muscles of the tongue relax all the way to the very root of the tongue. Hope that helps, be careful and don't hurt yourself
This is the most helpful tutorial I've ever watched. Thanks so much! 🥰

singwisevocals thank you Thank you. I will look forward to the vocal fry video :)
I can't get my tongue limp and relaxed, no matter what I do. The pencil thing is impossible without gripping it with my tongue 😆😆
When I'm doing scales, I feel like My larynx is so tensed or is it the root of the tongue? When I relax, I can still feel a phantom tension. How do I get rid of that? Thank you ❤
It may be due to emotional stress that causes tensiō around the neck.

My cat is very concerned with this new behavior I’m exhibiting
Straw would be much more sanitary.
To be honest you looked like you pierced your tongue with the pencil lol
Well, at least it didn't look as though I had pierced my brain!
