I'm not even a singer but this has helped me heaps! I always sound so nasally but once i did the stretches almost immediately my voice sounded so much deeper and felt like it clear my throat airways :S had a lot of mucus that i was coughing up? Thanks so much!
I hold a lot of tension between my should blades and into my neck and need to add these releasing tips to my warmups. By mid-afternoon, my voice is typically tight and strained, even though I gently stretch my whole system every day. Am also concentrating on releasing more in my dance classes. It's kind of ironic how much tension even flexible dancers have in their bodies. Flexibility can be something one is born with and doesn't equate to release of muscular tension. Dancers also frequently "forget" consistent, even breath flow. I'm too old to dance professionally, but continue to take class, with a much more mature approach, to stay fit. But if I lose awareness of breath, and if muscular engagement becomes muscular tension, the whole system is tighter, off balance, and affects my speaking and singing voice. So this video, and many, many of your others, are very helpful. Thanks for all them!

Thank you for this video. I've had TMJD issues and have started losing my voice and feeling very tight in my throat. I only realized today that it is likely tight tongue muscles as I have already been stretching my scm and scalene. The hyoid stretch is the puzzle piece I was missing. I appreciate all the info and the guidance.
I really liked these under the chin (Suprahyoid muscles) exercises. After so many years studying voice I am just beginning to recognize these huge amount of muscle tension I have felt in my next, chin, throat and larynx muscles. It is both a little daunting and relieving to think that perhaps finally I will balance my breathing ad speaking and vocal relaxation to move more easily from bottom low to high notes and vice versa. 🙏. These exercises seem doable for me and understandable to me and I felt more relaxed in my under chin and next area. I hold so much tension there. My voice has a difficult feeling clear and bright. Thank you. I am going to look at your video on Tongue Root tension. Thank you again.
Been experiencing tension in this area as a result of daily voice training for voice over. I'm glad this helped a bit. I can definitely feel those muscles starting to loosen up. I'm used to doing similar stretches for my back, especially FCMs. I get a lot of tension in my shoulders and neck so those help me a lot.

Hello this muscle have been sore and cramped for 2 days and it was so annoying. This exercise relieved the pain instantly. Also i frequently sing and i notice to engage it when i do, so i think my singing technique caused this problem. So thank you so much. I feel so much better.

Amazing. I've suffered from severe tension for years. My last performance my voice just gave out completely, but I was never able to figure out the problem. No vocal exercise seemed to work, I even had a vocal coach who didn't really identify the problem. I've done this for a few minutes and I can immediately feel some release. Ive felt a lot of tension at the back of my neck when I was singing and could never figure out the root cause even though I did many stretches and even bought a battery massager. I'm going to do this everyday! Thank you so much for this video, I have to say it's the only one of its kind I've ever seen😁👍😊😊

Great video! I actually recently found 2 tender to apply pressure on knots under my chin. My gf point out the first one by saying, "what the hell is that?!" when giving me a face massage. I was able to massage it down quite a bit but found more smaller and painful ones in its wake. Ive been to voice therapy before because of alot of excess muscle tension even when I speak, and worked on it then two but only to a certai point. Im starting to belive that this region is the main culprit so hopefully this video helps! Thanks!
Loving your videos Karyn. The neck muscles are neglected so often( well, I have neglected them til now!) Great anatomy revision too😉 Thanks so much, this is very helpful! Cheers, Lin.
I have a very hard time with my head voice after F#5. I can get up to C6 but from G5-C6 in short bursts due to the tension under my chin. I’ve tried doing some exercises and they’ve helped me glide up to A5 with vibrato but only for a short time. I feel like if I can release the tension or figure out how to expand my head voice without the tenseness in under my jaw I’ll be golden. Do you have any exercises specifically for your head voice to expand and strengthen it? Edit: with reverse phonation I can reach up to A6 and I’ve always been taught that if I can make the noise with air going in, I can going out. Is it just tension or is it tension and a breath control issue?
so basically we have to strenghten the muscle at the back of the head which are constantly stretched and painful, is that right?. If so, exercise like neck extension on bech would be a good option?
Strengthening those muscles at the back of the neck has to be done in conjunction with stretching the muscles in the front. The muscles in the back of the neck won't find relief if they're in a tug-of-war with the chronically short, tight muscles at the front. I think that muscles at the back of the neck are plenty strong from holding up the weight of the head, which essentially increases when the head isn't properly aligned. It's just that now they're working too hard and compensating.
Good day I feel like nobody understands what I'm feeling right now, I can barely breath properly I feel like I'm about to pass out cause of this tension please help
I was so stressed because this muscle has been tense for about a week now. I realized that it was because over winter break I wasn't in my speech classes or doing shows where I have to be in good alignment every day. Will definitely save this vid to my playlist.
I always wanted to sing very high chest notes. I found a way and practiced a lot. When I hit high notes I could feel it on my adams apple. And one day I felt like my adams apple starting go down and down. Then after I felt under my chin starts get really tight. I still have this problem and it’s been three days.I feel bit of relief when I do the massages. But what should I do if this won’t go back to normal, let’s say after 2 weeks.
My suprahyoids started to bulge when I talk, swallow and especially when I sing. I actually stopped singing even though I love to so much because I didn’t want to exacerbate the problem. It’s really hard to find info on this topic. Thank you. I will work on this daily. Do you have tips for retraining these muscles to relax while singing or talking? Thank you so much.
Quite possibly. The muscles under the chin are connected to the tongue and hyoid bone. A lot of people raise the hyoid bone (and larynx) as they sing higher up in the scale. Those suprahyoid muscles have to contract and tense up to raise the hyoid bone and larynx.
thanks so much, really great video personally , after years of training about seperation for tensions over all, when i swallow i didnt feel any movement of these muscles and when i sing in all entire range ,so please tell me what that mean?
I have had cramps while yawning, most often in the winter. I working on the computer all day. Lately, I have a bump under my tongue that comes and goes where the cramps happen. My muscle under my chin on the side of the bump is tight, stiff. After your video, I realized that I have a muscle chin cramp and need to massage it.
My hyoid bone is fracture what treatment can I take . R any surgery take cure this problem r have any exercise .if I'm do any surgerys after I'm working normal ha any complication I'm suffer to face .
I strained by singing with too much grit and have been hurting about a week. seems to be coming from the stylohyoid muscle, judging from the pain region (hurts when swallowing and occasionally into the ear). Only on my right side. It should heal in a couple weeks right or should i be concerned? thanks.
Did anyone ever experience a constant congestion of the airways , and especially when i would speak to people they could never hear me i felt like i had to shout sometimes , is this a hyoid issue?
Im having weird pain under jaw, right through my ear, also when swallow same time and stretch my head up.. what is it? Its new to me... Could having toothache broken cavity cause that?
I do have the under chin tension but my platysma is what is always hyperactive on one side, whether speaking or swallowing or singing. When i do your stretches it just pops out. Any stretches/massages for that tension?
About a year and a half ago I had accidentally yawned too wide and got a kind off painful cramp jaw/ neck then about 2 days later I noticed I couldn’t move my right sight of my face. I went to a doctor and they gave me some meds then 2 days after that I regained the movement of my face. But as time went by I noticed I would feel stiffness under my chin. Is this the cause of what your explaining on this video? Because I do notice I have a double chin and I’m not overweight. Everyone I swallow my chin looks weird. Please help me.
Having lpr and recently diagnosed mild sleep apnea, my muscles under my chin are tight..affecting my speech. I also feel tightness in my lips. I hoping these stretches will help. Thank you
PLEASE HELP ME. I have cervical dystonia which causes extreme tension. I try to practice breathing while laying down using me diaghrqm. I noticed that when breathing those muscles under chin are tender and pushing down. So I decided one day to breath with those relaxed consciously and it was a game changer. After those sessions my symptoms would calm down, my shoulders would relax, etc. but now that my symptoms have gotten worse especially in quarantine I find it so hard to keep those Suprahyoid muscles to stay relaxed when exhaling. Sometimes it’s so hard that when I breath out it almost makes a noise. I feel that I “bear down” to open up my breathing tract. I got this condition after a thyroidectomy which was elective and the biggest mistake of my life. PLEASE Write to me if you have ANY ideas about this. I am falling into a depression as I cannot do my daily 1 hour walk (I live in Spain where we can’t go outside to exercise only to grocery and pharmacy). If I could just relax this area of my body I stop this cycle or help it. Sorry if I sound crazy, I’m not I’m just so distressed. Ok now I wil try your exercises I only watched the first few minutes and saw that you know what you’re talking about

Edit: with reverse phonation I can reach up to A6 and I’ve always been taught that if I can make the noise with air going in, I can going out. Is it just tension or is it tension and a breath control issue?
Really helpful! Thanks!
so basically we have to strenghten the muscle at the back of the head which are constantly stretched and painful, is that right?.
Good day
I feel like nobody understands what I'm feeling right now, I can barely breath properly I feel like I'm about to pass out cause of this tension please help
I was so stressed because this muscle has been tense for about a week now. I realized that it was because over winter break I wasn't in my speech classes or doing shows where I have to be in good alignment every day. Will definitely save this vid to my playlist.
Thank you so much for this video! Literally an answer to my prayers!!!!
Thank you ❤❤❤❤ I have nothing to do with singing but this video helped me a lot!!! Much love ❤❤
Thanks you for your video
my under chin muscles is tensioned only in high note often in head voice.
What could be the reason?
Quite possibly. The muscles under the chin are connected to the tongue and hyoid bone. A lot of people raise the hyoid bone (and larynx) as they sing higher up in the scale. Those suprahyoid muscles have to contract and tense up to raise the hyoid bone and larynx.
thanks so much, really great video
personally , after years of training about seperation for tensions over all,
when i swallow i didnt feel any movement of these muscles
and when i sing in all entire range
,so please tell me what that mean?
Why do my front neck muscles feel more pressure after doing these exercises/stretches??
swallow reflex? as in involuntary swallowing?
Hi karyn! Can you do a video on the knodël? Also hyponasality (NOT hypernasality) :D
I can! Thanks for the suggestions.
Can you actually get hard muscle knots up under the jaw line between the corner of jaw bone and chin?
How do you know you've located the horseshoe bone? I can't really tell🤔
Same lol
What about sleeping posture
My hyoid bone is fracture what treatment can I take . R any surgery take cure this problem r have any exercise .if I'm do any surgerys after I'm working normal ha any complication I'm suffer to face .
I strained by singing with too much grit and have been hurting about a week. seems to be coming from the stylohyoid muscle, judging from the pain region (hurts when swallowing and occasionally into the ear). Only on my right side. It should heal in a couple weeks right or should i be concerned? thanks.
Did anyone ever experience a constant congestion of the airways , and especially when i would speak to people they could never hear me i felt like i had to shout sometimes , is this a hyoid issue?
if I do this repeatedly, will it eventually stop my throat muscles from engaging?
Thank You ❤️
Im having weird pain under jaw, right through my ear, also when swallow same time and stretch my head up.. what is it? Its new to me... Could having toothache broken cavity cause that?
I do have the under chin tension but my platysma is what is always hyperactive on one side, whether speaking or swallowing or singing. When i do your stretches it just pops out. Any stretches/massages for that tension?
your wounderfoul!!!
Thanks so much master❤
Having lpr and recently diagnosed mild sleep apnea, my muscles under my chin are tight..affecting my speech. I also feel tightness in my lips. I hoping these stretches will help. Thank you
karyn do a video on releasing nasophyranx...
Hmmm. What do you mean by 'release'? Do you just mean obtaining more resonance and spaciousness?

Ok now I wil try your exercises I only watched the first few minutes and saw that you know what you’re talking about
But what if I do feel movement under my chin when humming etc..?
