- When asked, Bill Salter, the humble musical genius would say that his work with Miriam Makeba may have been his most rewarding.
Their relationship began in the early 1960's and their meeting coincided with the struggle of the native people against the practice of Apartheid in South Africa and the Civil Rights movement in the USA. It was against this backdrop that Bill was inspired to compose the song "When I've Passed On" which she recorded and it became a staple of Makeba's live performances.

I absolutely ADORED (and STILL do...) MAMMA AFRIKA...
from the very first time I heard her on the radio (I was ~ 3 years old at the time...), performing Pata Pata, I was HOOKED...
I just got lost in the rhythm, the drums (and other instruments...), the words, AND the sound she was SO RECOGNIZED for (made with the throat - tongue...).
She was AMAZING, and gone too soon.

She remains our Mama Africa; and for me she is more than that. In 1997 in my year of exile in Portland,OR I had the honor of attending her concert and she signed a little book that I cherish to this day. And my life changed 200% and plus. The most handsome guy oh Mazi's band who is also the one accompanying her on piano in this video; in Portland he saw me dancing in the audience and he knew he had found "his dancing queen". Today, three handsome sons later, we are still dancing as we always celebrate our mama Africa. We send our love and blessings of Christmas and New Year to Miss Nzenzi and all the wonderful band that accompanied this extraordinary lady until her time on earth was up. Keep up her legacy.

Indeed a beautiful story - may you keep on dancing! When I saw Ms Makeba perform this song live in 1967 or 8 (accompanied by Sivuca on accordion), the experience was absolutely electrifying. She was a magnificent personage, and a gifted performer.
