Been watching your channel and your son’s for a while now.never knew that your wife’s Hakka ( welcome to the families lol ). I’m an overseas Chinese Hakka from Bangkok, been back to 梅洲 twice with my late mother to her village during the early ‘90s, so yeah it was pretty rural back then.just subscribed by the way since we’re 一家人!哈哈哈😜😂😂🧧Happy Chinese New Year โชคดีครับ!
The small town in this video is very similar to the city in which I live, and the city I live in is a provincial capital. China is indeed really advanced.
Happy new year! I was curious about the experience of driving an EV from Shenzhen to Meizhou and your video did a good demo. Maybe I'd give it a try next time.
We had no issues, we could have gone all the way without a charge, however as we were stopping aat a service station for the toilet and a snack we thought we might as well give the car a little charge.
Thanks for sharing your Chinese New Year celebrations with all of us on the internet. Definitely captured the festive mood and the close family ties. Good health and blessings in the Year of the Dragon.
Looking at the variety and abundance of food and fruits in this rural mini city in Guizhou, one of the poorer provinces, China can't be collapsing. I ain't going to believe what western media are telling me.
Thanks for sharing a great atmosphere of Chinese New Year. I love those small towns in China. There's so much freedom. We can play fireworks almost everywhere. Traditionally, we use to hang the long firecrackers from a bamboo pole from the rooftops all the way to the floor.
What a wonderful tour of what some Chinese would jokingly call a "18th tier city". The GDP of Guangdong Province surpassed 13 trillion yuan (about 1.83 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2023, topping the country for 35 consecutive years. Yet Guangdong people are low-key, pragmatic, hard-working, and rarely ostentatious compared to people in Shanghai and Beijing. Billionaires think nothing of wearing their simple T-shirt, shorts and sandals to eat at little restaurants, , and one would not know how many luxury cars are parked in their mansions.
Guìzhōu used to be a rather poor province and had little employment opportunites. But that changed a few years back. I was on a plane flying from Guǎngzhōu to Guiyang, and sitting next to me was a middle aged lady. She told me she had worked in Guangdong province for quite sometime, but then there appeared more job opportunities back home, so she was flying home for good. That was progress, and I wished the lady good luck. When I went into Guiyang City, I was really impressed by the living standard there, and the way Guiyang people behaved. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised. 😅
Glad to see rural China. Rural places would interest me as a traveler as it is good to take a break from mega first or second tier cities as well!. happy New Year of the Dragon. may you all continue to enjoy good health, prosperity, vitality and happiness!
Love the simplicity of that place, you're living the life there mate that's for sure, whether it's in the city, or rural... you can always find top quality grub in that part of China!
Your In-Laws family's house in hometown is so nice and big. Glad to see you have participated and enjoyed the traditional custom of setting off a massive firecracker and the fireworks which is kind of one the most symbolic thing of Chinese New Year
Barrett, do come and visit Sabah, Malaysia. Majority of the Chinese Malaysians here are Hakka people and speak Hakka daily plus other dialects such as Xiamen, Foozhou, Fijian, Cantonese and Hainanese. And of course, Mandarin which is the teaching medium in all Chinese schools in Malaysia.
The massive internal consumption within China can help the Chinese economy to grow. China should decouple from the US and focus on increasing trade and cultural exchanges with BRICS+ and friendly countries in the Global South.
That looks very much like my wife’s home town of Pubie in Guangxi where she is visiting now for Chinese New Year. I am currently back in the UK. For good cars in rural China, I remember seeing a Rolls Royce when visiting on one occasion
many famous south east Asian personalities came from Meizhou despite its small size most are hakka Lee Kuan Yew, Taksin Shinawatra, Rockefeller of the east Cheong Fatt Tze trully amazing all are hakkas
Watching your video, I nostalgia recall that I really enjoyed those delicious Hakka Char Yoke prepared by my Hakka grandaunt (late) for CNY meals during my childhood days many years ago 🙏 Nowadays CNY meals in the cities are likely restaurant food, so less home cooked food...
Chinese sure knows how to live meaningfully. Appreciate you load this video of rural side. Though rural, the super fireworks cheer one up with festive mood.

I love the markets and the chaos. As to the fire works - I used to have a quiet Chinese neighbor who compensated for his introversion with an hour of (illegal) Chinese fireworks at new years. Gosh, it was loud.
