  • In the video titled "Why This Smart Young Brit Chose China," hosted by the Barrett channel, we are introduced to Harvey, a young Brit whose decision to move to China is at the core of the discussion. The conversation begins with a recount of how Harvey first came to the attention of the host through a video that documented his quarantine experience in Shanghai, marking his first visit to China. Despite the daunting idea of quarantine, Harvey's decision was fueled by a desire to leave the UK amidst the chaos of COVID-19 and the expiration of his girlfriend's student visa.

Greetings from South Africa! I have to agree with you that China is a better environment for raising kids, with far better economic prospects than ‘developed’ countries, not to mention infrastructure and the safety aspect. In terms of the high speed rail network, to examine it from a western "for profit" viewpoint ignores the fact that China is not into providing mass infrastructure for profit, as it is not a private profit-making organisation. Its investment is in national mobility and the multiplier effect that has on internal economic activity. In other words, creating an environment conducive to economic progress. This is also why it is focussed on future facing technologies like chip production and the related AI boom due to the massive growth the new technologies bring. For example, if we were still stuck in the steam age (using steam to power rail and maritime travel and industrial machinery), as opposed to the electric age, to power industries and transport, our economies would be so far behind that our countries would never have been able to look after their populations.

A very good discussion, very insightful and very relevant to the Chinese context, especially between two foreigners. China is gradually trying to be more open and accessible than ever before. With China's huge population and many problems that need to be solved, I hope that discussions and suggestions like this will be brought to the attention of policy makers such as Immigration and Customs, or even at national level political consultative meetings, where representatives of foreign residents who understand the specifics of China and have traveled to and from the two countries all year round can participate in the discussions, and I believe that this will continue to improve the experience of foreign residents living in and traveling to China. Nowadays, more and more personal vloggers on RUclips are traveling to China for short periods of time and reporting positive comments, which is the best way to counter the negative rumors and smears of the Western media, as can be seen from the content of the comments of many foreigners' videos of their first trips to China.

The positive addition of English speaking Vlogers is an immense gain for China and is I think underestimated. Certainly in the last four years it has the potential to nullify ALL Western MSM negative propaganda due to genuine impartial reporting on RUclips. As Barrett said a little help at airports by Chinese personnel would greatly assist foreigners navigating Alipay WeChat etc , and other incidentals . PS inclusion of the UK travellers on the 15day visa free would be a major positive.

@ stevemchugh3067 Yes, I agree with you too. Personally, I don't know much about the basis of policy making in this area, perhaps there is indeed a political game factor based on the reasons of the governments in power in each country? The general direction of China should be more and more open, which is certainly useful for the positive exchange of people from different countries, and deepen understanding. I hope to see more countries enjoying this convenience based on the current experience of openness, which will be beneficial to people-to-people exchanges, regardless of politics.

It’s just different thinking patterns and values. If you spend money on luxury items through your credit card, which is borrowed money from the bank, it’s okay for the westerners. However, if you spend money for the people in infrastructures that can benefit everyone in the country, then it’s not good. Do you notice the difference from the west and China? One is caring about self interest, another one is for the group interest.

A Chinese economist said, "the West has 1 day Democracy (Election day)", but many days make meritocracy work (China's 30 year economic miracle) also: "The Chinese state guides capital and private entities towards what it believes are national strategic priorities, rather than allowing them to simply focus on generating greater revenue." Jack Ma of Alipay & Ant thought he could prioritize profit, he was reminded that is not the Chinese way? President Xi Jinping was sent to work on a farm in a rural Chinese village in his youth to instill him with a sense of reality, he saw the importance of local ideas being able to percolate up to the top of the governing body to help all other villages in China.

UK has inherited one good thing from China - centralised exam. UK led the world during the first industrial revolution. It was a culmination of many things that were done right then. Unfortunately, over time political system might end up on the wrong side of things when the system is filled with people who are self-serving. China is now trying to get things right after having lost its way for a few hundred years. It is equally likely that its system could end up filling with self-serving people. Hopefully, whatever that have enabled China to exist as a civilization for over 5k years would keep the system going eg meritocracy and confuciunism etc.

It sickens me to see people such as this taking advantage of the good nature of the Chinese people.
There are so many hardworking Chinese families doing what they can to get by and they are constantly reminded of the past events they have suffered from countries such as the UK and Japan.
Then people like Barrett and other RUclipsrs come along as privileged English men and simply play what cards they need to quickly rise above the day to day Chinese worker...
And what do they do with this popularity? Do they raise money and invest further in China? Work hard as a Chinese citizen?
No they simply enjoy how easily the praise comes and provide their girlfriend's with Western travelling and expensive things.
A real shame and a modern version of Western melon slicing.

Your guest speaker is100% correct. It’s a meritocracy system that they have used for hundreds of years. They choose the most capable intellect to run its country. They did that by selecting scholars passing the exam with the highest marks during the dynasties and now a lot of the government officials have engineering degrees.
