If you were born in Hong Kong and can prove you have Chinese ancestry in mainland China, automatically you are considered a Chinese national and you're qualified to apply for a Return Permit card which you can use to freely enter and reside as long as you want in mainland China. You don't need to declare or give up your citizenship in another country.

A lot of westerners feel that a strict government equals to zero freedom. However, having lived in Singapore and China all my life, my take is, having some form of proper control is good for the country. Like you said, low crime rates, good learning environment, and I would even add "good living conditions". The key is having good governance. In both China and in Singapore, the government have long term plans (like a 50-year road map), and they achieve progress very fast because the government is focused on improving the lives of their people. Full stop. Whereas in many western countries, the politicians are busy fighting the other party(s), and some even spend a lot of money meddling into other countries' affairs. Sad.

6 years ago I planned to take by boy back to NZ or Aus when he turned 13. He is now 10. There is no way I would let him go to ANY western country, absolutely no way, China is way better for children in every aspect. Have friends doing the same thing now. I have been in Shanghai over 16 years, its a wonderful place for children to grow up.

I practically grow up in the UK. From the age of 16 til I graduated. The 70's was pretty good in the UK & Europe. Than all hell break loose with the bunch of Neo Con taking over.

Same here. I intend to have my son do his university in either Beijing or Singapore. Any of the collective West is no longer ideal, no matter the other "attractions" on offer. What's most important is to be at least 99% sure you'll not have to receive your son/daughter in a body bag.
@@sjv9147s. The top universities in the west are still very good. They are smart as they recruit the best mind in the world. Few years back, Oxford approach my daughter and offer her a PhD scholarship. Smart of them. Low cost lecturers and researchers from Asia.

May I suggest one more advantage for raising kids in China. That is they can learn Chinese much more easier and better than from any other places. It is true particularly Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to learn.

my Chinese partner is trying to learn Thai, she says Thai is way more difficult than any language she has tried and she speaks 4 languages fluently now.

Here’s the most important reasons you should raise your child in China:
1) no drug, no Kensington Avenue
2) respect for teacher and learning
3) respect for other people’s property ; no graffiti ; no vandalism
4) low crime, no gangster crime
5) no school shooting.

Chinese education is really suitable for children's growth, because Chinese education focuses on respect and kindness from an early age, you can hardly see students disrespecting teachers in China, because their parents and teachers have taught them to respect their elders from an early age.
I still remember as a child growing up in a regular Chinese culture school, at an early age they have a class teaching children social behaviour. This little book I've read in class teaches young kids to be respectful to elderly, teachers and to the environment we live in, how people interact with each other respectfully, helping out old people cross the traffic, giving up your seat for those in needs like elderly handicap etc. These are all good virtual for children to learn at an early age.
Respect is in the Chinese culture and also in many Asian countries, such Japan and Korea (north and south).

I am labelled a foreigner and I must make the most highest sacrifice of all... giving up my son to this racism and he too looks at me as a foreigner now. Be careful with your words and change your opinion of us "foreigners" we are no different to you. People are too "interested" and that sickens me everyday and makes bringing up my children here a misery for me as a parent because of the words people choose to say to me. I just want to go home where I live in a lovely town where I was brought up with friends from all cultures around the world. Harvey is too homesick and you fail to see his full view because he left it right to the end to say that he is in misery and making a sacrifice for his child. Well said Harvey! Likewise, Singapore is also against drugs. Our government, citizens and society at large is also against drugs. Singaporeans are proud of our drug-free and safe streets. Women, the elderly and kids can all walk the streets at night safely without any fear of violent crimes. Giving into drugs is NOT a thing that politicians should be doing in order to win votes. Legalising it will make it worse. It results in a crime-ridden and kakistocratic society. I sincerely hope that the British people, monarchy and government leaders can do the right thing and say NO to drugs. Come visit Singapore one day too! 😃

We can teach kids good manners and behaviour anywhere, it's regressive to assume any one country is the only place that can be done as it's the parents job overall. In the end I would worry more about the overarching lack of free news, free speach, human rights, ability to complain / get support if the police or authoritarian regime is not behaving normally etc. But that's not the case in China, if the police beat you then you shut the hell up. If they roll the tanks in then you shut the hell up. Don't expect the corrupt CCP to listen to the people, it's the other way around. Fair enough if that was respectfully done but as we saw with Hong Kong crackdowns, they can beat up old people and regular passersby and they will not care or give any support, they will simply condemn the people themselves instead.
China doesn't give citizenship to anyone coming from outside of China except some special cases. China is not an immigrant country.

Whilst I don't agree of everything that China is, I do have to give it a lot of credit for its crackdown on the mass drugs, religion, strict social behaviour, no guns so no mass shootings or knife attacks. Overall better health, hygiene and education because they're funded properly compared to the West where you have to fork out money to be able to afford healthcare which with current living standards isn't possible. Unfortunately, China was the one that looks increasingly likely gave us the covid pandemic of 2019/20

To raise your kids in China will be a great advantage because they would have master one of the most difficult languages in the world.. your children will also learn the habit of savings for rainy days like what most of the Chinese do unlike the West when most of them survived on pay to pay cheque..

In next generation, the distance between young people with their parents are bigger and bigger. I mean the harmony in a family may not like what you expected. well.. in HK, it is having so much influences from the west still. 150 years of colonization cannot be easily removed, forgotten. it takes time.. I would not say your experience in HK is particularly representative for China as a whole.

I’m from Hk too but I’ve been exposed my kids to Chinese culture and family values when they were still young. It’s true a lot of my friends still take their kids to Japan , North America and Europe for holidays, how can you groom them to accept Chinese cultures and values when you constantly exposed them to western influences

The younger generation in China is still very family oriented and respect the elderly.
In HK, when my mom and I take the train/MTR, it's usually the Chinese from China who speak Putonghua and carry suitcases, who are willing to offer seats to my mom.

You are absolutely right, I have live in UK for 9 years and the longer I lived there the more I want to return back home so this July we sold house and move back to Beijing to raise up our 13 years old daughter with better education, safer environment and hard work mentality 😊

I was in San Francisco in 1992 and it was such a beautiful city. Now I would not dare to set my foot on that soil because of homeless, high crime rate and zero dollar shopping plus drug liberation.
The drug problem in America is actually multi-fold.
First, the society is declining. The people are getting poorer, and the social safety net is dissolving. It is simply getting harder and harder to live a normal life in America. Drugs are an escape from a terrible reality, and what many Americans are facing is an uncertain future with worsening prospect. That adds a lot of stress and people wants to find escape. This is primarily due to their neoliberal capitalist system that is draining more and more money from the people
Second, alienation in American society is getting worse. Loneliness is now identified as a big part of social decay. People work, they chased after material fulfillment and they throw away bonds as easily as old clothes. Most Americans are lonely and they don't know how to get out of it and they thought if they just consume more, that momentary satisfaction is also like a drug. That is a harsh reality and of course drugs become an escape. This is also caused by capitalism insatiable appetite to commodify everything in society, even human relationships and human desires. Therefore, relationships in America is warped and twisted and people cannot find true support and security.
Third, pharma companies like prudue and people like the sackler family are primarily responsible for addicting millions of Americans to hard drugs. The fact that they can do this in the first place is the exorbitant privilege companies and capitalists enjoy in America. They are allowed to lie, cheat the public and allow to social engineer the country to extract more money out of the people. This is yet again a capitalism problem.
Finally, America cannot solve long term foundational problems. This is a culture where self reflection and self awareness are very low and temporary relief is often prioritize over more painful long term correction. So drugs are a quick way to hide fundamental problem. This of course is part of all the first two problems. That's why there are so many depressed people in America and why drugs are so free flowing, like Xanax, adderall etc. are prescribed like crazy because they cannot solve fundamental social problems. Not to say that all these drugs are bad, but they shouldn't be used to band-aid gaping wounds of capitalism induced social decay and alienation.
That's why drug abuse is such a huge problem in America. A declining society, loss of hope, lack of support, alienation and loneliness coupled with a ruthless, exploitative economic system and this is what you get. That's why the war on drugs fail because the fundamentals are not there. It is not the lack of enforcement.
One of the biggest benefits of raising your children in China is the schools actually teach reading, writing and maths - your children will not be subject to damaging things like gender studies and trans teachers. This is forbidden in China, as they beleive in protecting their children.

Especially when you consider that about 130 mil Americans are estimated to have low English literacy. And according to data in 2018, only about 33% of 8th grader are proficient at math at grade level.
@@zuriyel5368 its insane - and reflects the failure of the US university system allowed radical indoctrination and ideologies. The teachers graduating then pass their insanity to the children. Ideologies are a weapon.

The UK is slowly but surely sliding into a dystopian mess. Everything is unraveling. Most state schools are dumbing down. Most universities are also third rank today. So bad that their graduates are often not seen as fit to occupy the top professorial posts in UK unis. Many posts are now filled by US, Canadian or even Australian academics.

Very refreshing to hear a young Westerner appreciating China's strict laws and conservative internet culture. So ironical that these same 'strengths' that you pointed out here are always twisted by mainstream media as 'oppressive' (eg, lots of street cameras in China) or 'dictatorial' (because China's government does not have elections of the same format as the west as if having them makes the western governments 'better' or more 'effective' ).
Just because you point out the flaws of your own country does NOT make you less patriotic - it simply means you are honest and wish that your home country will improve.
Yet, due to the toxic western mainstream media and ignorant and arrogant western politicians, any mention of China in positive light will immediately draw a vicious reaction and thus, making it impossible for western countries to learn the best practices from China. Sad.

@@Harveyinchina you are welcome. Wishing to give some unsolicited advice as an older person, I would highly encourage to do the following (if you have not already done so):
1) Learn the Chinese language - read AND write. Yes, it is hard but nothing is impossible if you put your heart to it (a trait which I am sure you witness in the millions of hard-working Chinese around you). You don't have to be proficient to the point of composing Chinese poems and sonnets but at least, be minimally fluent enough to survive in daily life and fill out official documents etc on your own.
2) After success in point 1, use it to expand your network of Chinese friends from a diverse range of backgrounds - the famous 'network' or Chinese 'Guang Xi' (relationships). You never know when you will need their help someday.
3) Whatever is your profession in China right now, make sure that you continue to IMPROVE on it. The cruel reality is that as a foreigner, you have NO birth right to live in China when you no longer possess any viable economic / professional skills set to contribute. I know it sounds cold but it is the truth everywhere in the world - no country can indefinitely support foreigners who don't contribute to their economies especially in China (with 20% of the world's population and having less arable land than India or the US).
4) Never rest on your laurels even after you succeed - don't forget, there are millions of talented Asian youths who have great fondness of China and would enter it continually along with China's own millions of upcoming youths. The competition will only get more intense in the coming years as the fight between China and the US / West heats up and after the winding down of the Ukraine war.
5) Be open minded - in relation to point 1 especially, you may even find yourself being forced to relocate from Shanghai to cheaper Chinese cities someday as the cost of living in the former continue to increase. Worse, English will be less likely to be spoken regularly in those less-developed Chinese cities. Well, if you are an English teacher, then good for you. But also remember point 4 - there will be other westerners like you who are younger and more determined.

I fully agree with you. A lot of people will be skeptical and will say you are exaggerating but in reality they sort of know what you are saying is true. You are making the right decision. I wish I could have had the same option. I live in the Uk, used to live in London but have moved out to Kent. 1000% spot on, not only girls/women even men will say the same, no chance I feel safe walking the streets on my own when it’s dark.
It is very impressive to see a young man like you to have a clear mind, objective and analytical thinking. I am surprised to hear the 2nd reason as the infamous Chinese firewall has always been heavily criticised. This is the first video that I watched from this channel, but then I got hooked and watched many others. 👍👍
There's a reason why they have a strong firewall and now limit youngsters to 2 hours a day. So many people hooked on Tiktok where misinformation goes rampant even though it's Chinese owned and also Twitter which has the worst performing outcome of any social media you could use since Musk's takeover in October last year.
I got hooked too. I've been living in the UK as a Chinese national. Luckily I don't have urge to go out late night, so I never worry about my safety here.

Well said! I living in USA the gun issue and drug issue are getting worse. The government and Congress they don’t working together to solve those problem, and always want to make conflicts overseas like with with China. It is sad to see the things getting worse.

You might have mentioned that when growing up, Chinese children are inculcated with values like respect for elders, obedience, encouragement to study & work hard, strive for goals all to the betterment of family & society. I don't believe that we have lost these values today.
These theories were not formed in a short period of time, but after more than 5,000 years of precipitation and accumulation, gradually engraved in the hearts of every Chinese people

I agree on som of what you said but i have to ultimatly disagree. I think both respect for the parents and the children themselves is severly lacking in western society, and that this is a natural consiquence of antipathy towards obidience and a clear hirarchal structure in the family and that this really goes against human nature and how kids are naturally wired. Ofcourse mutual understanding and independance is important when raising a child, but that can not be at odds whit a clear structure, as kids are naturally wired to want to make their parents proud but also stretch the rules, if not given clear instructions they keep Guessing trying to find out what their duties are and where the Sharp edges are, they find neither and remain untaught, the only time they’ll find the edge is when their parent can’t keep up the act anymore and snaps, then to make it Worse the parent appologieses to the child. I could go on painting this picture but hopefully you get the point, mutual understanding and respect is lost because of lack of structure and coreherency and the neglect of responsibilty from the parent along whit an underestimation of the child.

My experience while traveling in the south of England on a train in 2004. A train employee started to check for ticket and caught a Mediterranean looking man without ticket. This man paid eventually, then a blonde middle-aged English lady asked the train employee why he didn't enforce the fine. He replied that he wouldn't do that and that she shouldn't made such comment. The lady was a bit angry and commented that this is not fair to those who paid for the ticket like her. The man was embarrassed, the employee moved on and it was as if nothing has happened.
20 years ago, many people believed heaven is where the police are British, the cooks are French, the mechanics German. It seems things have changed.😂

It is a big trouble in the States regarding drugs. Once you get out Penn Station NYC, you can smell Marijuana all the way to the central park. Kids in middle school are already familiar with drugs, even in the communities of higher income. Over 100K ppl are killed with drugs in the States annually.

Good Points! However, they are all easily arguable. There are good and bad points for raising the Western societies, China or anywhere else. The main point is that you provide a stable home for your kids, and always be there for them, especially when they have questions.
I'm Japanese and my wife is Chinese, and both of our sons turned out fine. my oldest son is finishing up college and will be attending flight school to be a Pilot and my youngest is studying to be a doctor. They both did not do drugs, unless you consider video games a type of drugs. They think majority of the content on Tik Tok is idiotic they never joined gangs, and they embrace American, Chinese and Japanese culture. My oldest can speak Japanese and French and youngest speaks Mandarin. They both were raised in America!
Just remember, you as a parent plays a big factor to what type of person your kids will be. If you are absent from their life a lot due to work or going out to drink with co-workers, your kids could resent it and become rebellious. If you kids turns out bad, do not blame the Chinese, American or the UK government or society for it! It always starts with the parents and what kind of home environment they create for there kids. The Government and Society does play a part in it, but not as much as the parent.
Just they fact that you are willing to leave your home environment just to give your kids a better life makes me truly believe that you will be a great parent, and an solid anchor for your family!

Raising your children in China is great when they are between 0-15. However, after that, you might consider taking them back to the UK or other countries. This is because if they want to pursue the academic track, they'll face intense competition in China, particularly with the infamous gaokao. On the other hand, if they are interested in vocational work, China hasn't yet established an studying(trade schools) and working environment that appreciates blue-collar professions as much as Germany does(hopefully this will change in the future).
Foreigners don't have to take gaokao. However university fees will be more expensive.
