- The world has trusted Chinese manufacturing for decades, but recently many politicians are stating Western countries must decouple from China. Will Chinese manufacturing continue to play a vital role in our global economy? Today I travel to Wuxi, China to visit a Chinese textile factory to see how Chinese factories make clothes.

@@CyrusJanssen Nope. Says a lot about the owner. The owner wishes to drive down the cost of wages and to increase profits. China is a low wage country. Look at what has happened in the US where real wages for the bottom 80% of the population adjusted for inflation are equivalent to wages in the early 1970s however the cost of housing for example is far greater than can be accounted for than the increase in the cost of living over the same time period. All the benefits have accrued to the top 20% of the population at the expense of the bottom 80% of the population. Socialism, that feared and dreaded word, is the reason the European and US manufacturers are moving production to China while making sure the economies of Europe and N. A. are burdened with capitalism which is structured to benefit the top 20% of the population.
Few people know history, including Cyrus. China was the first to trade high-quality luxury merchandise in the world. I hope you can imagine the cheap stuff can't make money on the Silk Road. The goods on the Silk Road, such as silk, tea, and china, were so expensive, and the common Europeans were so poor and couldn't afford that only European royalties could afford them.
the EU has so many regulations it will never manufacture anything in the EU again.
That it still needs to complete it's decolonization.
Apart from a complete supply chain, China also provides homemade equipment, raw material, efficient logistics, a stable power supply, and a skillful, competitive labor source. I have not counted the largest use of industry robotic technology. China become the world factory for a reason.

The reasons for China's success were the huge labor force and small wages. Both are changing or did change already big time. Wages increased by a factor of 14-15 since the year 2000. The super strick lock downs interrupted many supply chains. Many connections that we were used to in terms of "globalization" until 2019 will not return. This Norwegian guy is biased and his company may do better than others which I can't judge. But corruption and most of all the massively declining population present a huge challenge for China in so many ways.
I've been to over 200 factories in China. It's not only the textile factories that operate like this. From toy manufacturers to electronics, the supply chains are all integrated. Moving production to Vietnam, Malaysia, India, etc, most of the components are still coming from China, so it only increases transportation costs and lead time if something goes wrong in the supply chain. Large part of of the shift to outside of china is to avoid tariffs, and the anti-china propaganda.

@@zenlei8258 Where did i say you can't? Labor is not the only factor in overall costs. Canada just had a port strike affecting all imports. Anything that require components or parts to finish their products are affected, whether its delays or increased costs to fly them in.
A shoe factory in Africa doesn't happen with a snap of a finger. Where do they setup the factory? In a rural village or near a city? Is there enough power? Where are the raw materials coming from? Will there be local protests, is extra security needed? Where are the equipment and machinery coming from, who's servicing them, etc. The factory Cyrus visited can have everything sourced locally. Can Africa at this very moment do it? In the future they probably can, but how long will that that? Look at USA's build back better with all that funding, where are all those factories they promised?

Cyrus failed to show how well-planned and how integrated the textile industry is in China. In every textile-focused business park, there is one water-recycling plant included. Not only is water recycled, reused, but this lowers the total operating and environmental costs of the factories. That is textile factories in other countries cannot compete.
One more point: The local governments are highly competitive with their neighboring communities. They publish statistical reports that highlight their achievements. The reports include economic growth and environmental protections, etc. The higher achievers receive more rewards (and budget) from the regional governments. They take their work seriously.
The recycling of water rests mainly on the fact that they've serious fresh water supply issues.

The textiles use various color dyes ( water based ) to make colored clothing & accessories.
The dyeing process & the resultant colored water must be treated before it is released back into the main water supply source. Or, it can be recycled in the ongoing manufacturing processes inside the factory.
My first job in 1975 was in a sewing factory in New Zealand, and we had everything including the fabric cutting, but back then the cutters used these massive saw like things that looked like chainsaws to cut through the 50 odd layers of fabric they'd laid out. There were women who'd worked there for 15yrs, and not long after, everything started closing and moving to China. Primarily for cheaper labor, but now these same companies (not this guy) are looking for other countries to exploit cheap labor, like India and Bangladesh.
So impressed that China has paid the people more as the country began making more profits, which as we've seen has lifted millions into a new middle class, which in itself allows these people to also purchase goods they never would have before, which in turn benefits the economy.
But explain that to our economists who don't care about our economies at all, because multinational companies don't make money on their product but on speculation through the stock markets. One instance, is General Motors, who makes more money a year on the stock market than on their actual primary business making vehicles.
China could have easily become any of the other Asian countries, who have a very wealthy minority while millions live in extreme poverty. It all comes down to the government, and luckily China has had very capable leaders and government since their independence.
Don't forget that corporations speculate on real estate beside punting on their stocks.

That's very interesting that they make more money speculating in the markets than their products/services. This is probably why most things with an American name are overpriced and oftentimes inferior in quality to their Japanese/Asian counterparts.

I've had a side gig as a technical interpreter for a few years now. Most of my jobs involve Chinese factories, some good, some bad. The "good ones" are absolutely on par with even the best European factories I've seen. Clean, well organized and with a clear focus on quality; just like the one in this video. I can totally see "Made in China" becoming a mark of quality someday.

@@M_O_G I have been to China and have many Chinese friends to families still living there. People speak very freely and the government listens and change policies to suit their citizens. American democracy is freedom to elect officials that don't care about the people unless they are rich.

@M_O_G Not expecting China to be America as to speech, but my point was in refutation of the comment regarding Chinese environmental policy, which the records shows is one of the planets worst.
Fifty years ago I found a pair of red leather gloves. They are still going strong, despite considerable abuse. Recently I pulled the lining out a bit to dry them and there was a hidden label. It said “Made in China”.

If a factory is willing to get on camera it’s obviously a well put together nice factory. Which is sadly not the case for most factories.

About three years ago, I realized that the quality of several of my favorite clothing brands had declined. Because of staying at home in the early days of the virus epidemic, it is not safe to loot around in California. Stores are running promotions online. So I do a lot of online shopping at home. Especially with some of my favorite brands (prices between $200 and $1000), the quality of the fabric is not as good as it used to be. There are also cases of poor cutting skills and uncomfortable wearing. Even size is problematic. I looked carefully at their labels and found none were made in China. Now when you buy something, you must check whether the place of origin is China
I fell victim to this too. When I bought online clothes from my usual brand (M&S) during the pandemic, I cannot see the source of manufacture. The clothes were not of the same standards and not the cut I expect and feel comfortable to wear. I ended up having to give away the purchases.
For $200-$1000, you can buy a car from china.

@@stpaulmercantile All I can tell you that every penny I made was legal and e very penny I spent was after tax and 10% sales tax. BTW. I was stayed at home for two years during the pandemic. So only used my travel budget to shopping

Hi Cyrus, here in Canada, I already find that high quality textile like beddings, clothes etc are all made in China. The cheap and low-quality textile are usually made in other countries like India, Bangladesh or Mexico.
I was in Vietnam in December. I asked some of the clothing vendors if their clothes are made locally. They said the cheap stuff are made in Vietnam, and the higher quality ones they import from China. I thought that was funny.

Natural order of events. When I was young the goods out of Japan were called “Jap crap” because the toys broke by the end of Christmas Day. But with time, all countries move up the quality chain until they become high quality and expensive, then the whole process starts again in a different country. Always has, always will.
There is a Chinese saying that goes "you get what you pay for". As long as you are willing to spend money, you can buy high-end products. The quality of cheap products is not guaranteed

The reason why China is winning is simple, its PHILOSOPHY. China does not only focus on the rich but also the poor. The Chinese understand what it means to be poor because they have experienced poverty it until recently. Low cost Chinese products have changed lives in poor parts of the world like Africa. A good example is affordable yet high quality Chinese motorbikes in Africa that have created millions of jobs for young people who would otherwise be jobless. Chinese mobile phones and network equipment have also connected millions across Africa. Kenya owes its fast internet speeds to Equipment made by firms like Huawei in China. Very soon China will make electric cars very affordable even to the poorest people in Africa thanks to its Sodium ion batterie tech that will make EVs very affordable. Western manufacturers will not beat China any time soon because they lack sensitivity and responsivenes when dealing with customers overseas which means they are always playing catch up.

In Apple and Tesla, the Americans might be holding on to the jewels of the crown, but they contribute much less to the lives of the majority. The ridiculous profit margin American brands demanded means that they would fail once the Chinese brands caught up. The American government would then use their political toolbox to hit the Chinese. It just goes to show how detached the US/Western governments are with the reality on the ground, that decoupling with China is just a wishful thinking. China remains a very attractive place for foreign investments hence more have come. What the US/West should be focusing on is to improve its own competitiveness instead trying to cripple China in the short term, it will only make China become less reliant on Western tech, which will hurt the Western economy even more.
Western politicians policies are driven entirely by the flawed and disproven neoliberal ideology going back to Reagan and Thatcher, but they will keep at it as long as their stock portfolios benefit from it
Not many people/countries can stand alone. International trade is beneficial for all involved. China bought over 2,000 Boeing airplanes, thousands of John Deere tractors, Caterpillar bulldozers, Coca-Cola drinks, Johnson&Johnson healthcare products . . . the list goes on. My sister works for a Chinese company. She is a fashion designer based in the UK. She too has visited China on several occasions. She says that the Chinese people are very nice. Personally, I am very pleased for China and its success.
Recent hostility in the West towards China is blinkered and short sighted. The US in particular is paranoid and fears that China will come to dominate it as the US currently dominates the globe. I think these fears are unfounded.

In western countries like US and UK they force the chinese companies out of the country such as huawei and recently a non advanced semi conductor company in uk owned by the chinese is forced to sell its shareholding by the uk gov.
Every capitalist country has a ruling class that controls its government to act in its interests. Private Property means private property for a country's ruling class. The idea that Western capitalism is transnational and China can join in for part of the spoils and profits is an illusion. The greed of the ruling classes and the tendency of profits to decline means that ruling class must come out to defend their national interests against both those living under the yoke of its foreign capital and the working class in their nations.
It's because the West can no longer compete on a level playing field. Their only hope (they think) is sanctions and threats.
Cyrus, one of the pioneers of the textile industry in China is Allan Zeeman. Zeeman is a naturalized Chinese citizen from Canada. He’s been in China since the 70s. He’s the Chinese version of the American dream in that he came to China with a few hundred dollars in his pocket and became a multi billionaire.

But I started to doubt about their stories when I realized everything they said about China is bad and evil and this is just impossible. How can a bad evil gov't improve the living standard of 1.4 billions people? Only a good efficiency gov't can accomplish the achievements of the modern China.

Lately, major indexes have been highly volatile. Even small caps and mid caps have shown promise, with significant jumps in short periods. I read an article about people making up to $150k in profits during this season. Any advice on scaling up such returns would be highly appreciated and valued.

I visited China as a tourist ten years ago, and it was a real eye opener. They are a good hard working people. Add that to a total lack of labor unions and lawyers, and a well meaning employer, and you have a recipe for a good product for both the customer and the employees who makeit.

In the West, if the quality is poor, it's because it's made in China. When the quality is good, they credit the brand and the company even when it's made in China. Earlier low quality high volume goods from China were made according to the Western companies' standards and market demands as well.

In western countries like US and UK they force the chinese companies out of the country such as huawei and recently a non advanced semi conductor company in uk owned by the chinese is forced to sell its shareholding by the uk gov.
In India I worked in a factory in staff position and the owners used to pay minimum wage to the workers 9000 rupee's only, some of them worked for more then 5 years but the maximum the promotions got you to was 13000 Rupees only, while the Owner owned Audi, Mercedes and earned a heavy profit each year. They could have easily efford to double the the wages of all the workers without hitting thier profit margin much but they chose not to do so.

US keeps talking about decoupling, while continuing to do business with China. They say one thing, but do another.
It's all for show really. What they do want, however, is for their competitors in Europe to decouple as much as possible and become reliant on the USA and its designated client states for trade. The strategy is a revival of the cold war isolation of China and Russia.
Might end up being the USA and it's vassals being isolated from the rest of the world ....

Great videos, thanks a lot. I also like the one on one you do with people. I am from Québec. I travelled in a small vw eurovan extensively in the USA. I was often confronted in discussions with people badmouthing China and saying on one side of the mouth...bring back manufacturing to the USA...and on the other side not wanting to pay. When I would say they should go and ask all the top executives why they don't pass on all the savings by Chinese manufacturing no answer was given. The truth is all these executives are making 1000 times the salary of a normal worker and secondly it is the company who determines what the quality of the product is going to be, not the Chinese manufacturing. But I always knew that one day China would be start to be more selective as the western world starts tu crumble from excessive consuming. Stay safe.I first set foot in China in 2007. Been back several times, total maybe 24 months. Married a Chinese woman met in Montreal. Now we are going back this fall for the winter and will be looking to settle in a small town. She has an apartment in Lanzhou.

Back in the 90s many textile factories went bankrupt. So was the state-owned factory my sister worked at. I remember every time I walked past the river beside her factory, the water was in strange green blue colors and the odor was incredibly pungent that could almost expel insects. In my career, I never had the opportunity to visit a textile factory again, but in early 2000s I was on a M&A project where a US company was looking to acquire a plywood manufacturer in China. I followed the folks from the US company to a few plywood mills in Jiangsu, Shandong and Zhejiang. The situations of these factories were rather different - the advanced and highly automated factory in Zhejiang was a very modern one whose managers were professionals, while a mill in Xuzhou was shockingly primitive where workers chainsawed wood logs without any protective gears in the dust and ash. I'd assume it's the same with the textile industry. The good ones are modern and environmentally friendly, while the bad apples may do business in ways in stark contrast.
23 years ago, I started my first job in Shenzhen as an assistant to the general manager of a Taiwanese company. Later, I started to work in a Hong Kong company, and then I went to a US-funded company, a Japanese company and a Chinese state-owned company. I started to own a small factory in 2007. Although it has brought us technology, management, ideas and a huge market, China's development should cooperate more closely with the world, rather than going closed.
Well, I think one statement needs to be moderated, not all Norwegians are trustworthy. Norway totally lied about Nord Stream 2. Trustworthiness is not a given based on country or ethnicity.

Every company i've worked for in recent years was relocating production line either to China or Mexico... in large part because we just don't have skilled labor in the US.
These folks are sewing for 8 hours a day whereas in the West, you are not going to be able to find young people that can put down their cell phones for long enough to learn how to do this and if no young people are learning how to do this... you can't do local manufacturing...

The goods on the Silk Road, such as silk, tea, and china, were so expensive, and the common Europeans were so poor and couldn't afford that only European royalties could afford them.
Remembered in a previous video Cyrus quoted someone of saying: China builds bridges and railways; U.S. builds military bases. The same seems also true in reverse direction: If a company wants to make a product used in trade war attacking others, it goes to U.S.; if a manufacturer wants to make a product improving people's lives everywhere (including the U.S.), it sets up shop in China.

I saw a pair of American brand sneakers selling for $14,000 Hong Kong dollars (US$1,800) in Hong Kong. These shoes are listed as made in China.
Our garment division started in 72, it will be 51 years in a few months. 8 different machines to make a t-shirt doesn’t actually tell much of the story. For a plain t-shirt from fabric to in carton box ready to ship would have about 50 line items check list, each line item would average 3-5 steps or specifications.
I’ve always discouraged friends who want to start a clothing brand as most have no idea how much detail is required before you even get to the fabric ordering stage. Have a very high success rate on this once they attempt to do the first tech pack for the first SKU/style. In over 15 years, i would say 95% of the attempts ended in my friends deciding that it wasn’t worth it..
Where China sees win-win cooperation, the US only sees a zero sum game.

I'm on a road trip through the heart of America from Yellowstone to Denver. Went through a small town with a shop selling cowboy boots. The owners proudly recommended new technology boots which are waterproof.
They were made in China.
China can always make hight quality product. The reason that foreigner can only find low end products is because of cost and price. China can also export products with low price that be afordable by people around world.

They bring disgrace to the industries and a bad name for the countries. The governments and the industries should stop pointing fingers, but should come together to ensure consumers get the best quality goods. Help, not blame. I'm not from China but people don't realize that China makes the highest quality products in the world today - as well as lower-quality bargain priced items. But those cheap things are moving to cheaper countries like India and Vietnam that cannot produce high quality. That's why companies like Apple and Samsung have had to go back to China despite higher costs.

Congrats for this amazing channel. I think you have build a clearer idea for the foreign entrepreneurs who want to build a business in China. I worked for an company in Europe who wanted to export their products in China, my job was a kind of interpreter that I had to be the bridge of comunication between my boss and the chinese entrepreneurs, unfortunately my boss was a very arrogant people and was very disrespectful, it was a very embarrasing experience, I tried my best, but the fact is the fact. Anyway, the business was failed in the end. Chinese people are very friendly and efficient, if you are respectful and professional, you will have a great exprience dealing with them, and you can make good friends.
Companies are not de-risking to Europe (except of security related industries), or totally moving out of China. They are going to Vietnam, Thailand and India..to diversify
Its simple good business sense not to have reliance on single country for your Supply Chain, commodities and energy.

Interesting video, but it doesn’t address the real reasons many western companies are de-risking/decoupling from China. First reason: China is no longer the lowest cost country in many industries. India, Vietnam, Mexico among others offer better opportunities. Also, the cost to ship containers from China to the US has skyrocketed, reducing the competitive advantage China once enjoyed. The other, more serious risk, is the geopolitical issue. Many US companies are simply too dependent on China, and should there be a conflict or sanctions or another pandemic, companies could end up losing their supply chain and go broke. And yes, companies, like the one I worked for from 2014-2022, are moving their manufacturing from China to the US. But that’s the easy part. Changing from Chinese suppliers to other countries takes years, and raw suppliers will take decades to completely decouple from China. But as Covid taught us, China is not a highly reliable supplier, and transportation costs are only rising, so we have to do what we have to do.

Thank you for making this video and showing everyone. My Hong Kong company run our own factory in China. The current labor law has full protection on workers. If we don't pay our workers on time (salary, bonus, medical insurance, etc) the worker and complain to the government. Within like two or three days local government will call us to visit their office. If it is our fault and we don't pay the worker, government will frozen our company bank account.
About the environmental regulations, we need air, sound or water treatment and protection equipment in the factory, subject to the need. Say we need to treat the industrial water before we can dump it to the city pipe. Local government actually check the pipe regularly and if they found we violated the law, one time we got a fine and second time, government send me to jail. If the pollution is really bad, even first time violation, they would send me to jail.
I am sure not 100% of factories are compliant with the law but China Government is very serious and improving on the environment and labor protection issues.
Western media is just not telling the real story. If someone wants to visit and see how we make plastic wrap, parchment paper and foil (food contact products) you are welcome to visit and see it yourself.
