RUSHGIRL BEV Absolutely!!!
I've said this for probably 20 years. Such an incredible, special talent that guy just crazy, crazy good.
Agreed!
he chose this. he tried the main stream thing with the band "thornley". too much propaganda and crap he says.... this man has been around for years. and if you have heard good music you have heard his music
that is why they are best underrated, we get to enjoy them intimately in smaller venues.
I saw these guys in a hole in the wall bar in Columbia, South Carolina in 1999, like maybe 30 people there. I was instantly hooked. A couple years later I heard they were playing a show at Mayfest in downtown Columbia and I HAD to go. Turns out I was scheduled to work that day so I quit that f-ing job and I'm sooooooo glad I did, it was a killer show! Top 3 of rock bands in my mind
I've said for a long time that if Thornley had been born in the States, his music would be charting every year, because he would have gotten the exposure and promotion that he deserves. He is a special talent.
Yeah I dunno about that. Bryan Adam's became world famous and he was Canadian born. Same with Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne and Gordon Lightfoot. I mean Neil Young was born in Canada so was joni Mitchell two of the biggest artists ever. Justin Bieber and drake were Canadian born and two of the biggest pop artists of the past 30 years. The weeknd played the super bowl a few years ago. Daniel Landis, Michel frigging buble, Shania twain ....all giant Canadian born artists. Rock groups like rush , nickelback super successful and everyone knows they are from Canada. So, I don't agree that's it just where u are born.
It's because of the time they came in I think. Music scene was exploding in the 90's. They came out on fire with ILMO but the second album didn't fare great which then led to an extended break by the band. They got lost in the ether.
The fact that this man, along with Big Wreck, aren’t way bigger than they are is criminal. Unbelievable musician and singer. I’ve been a fan of him since The Pleasure and the Greed.
100% Agree. And live they are just out of this world, better than studio. I don't miss a concert when they are around.
I whole heartedly believe that Big Wreck or even Ian Thornley are in the top 3 maybe event number one bands from Canada (I know the whole band isn’t). Regardless amazing singer/songwriter and super underrated!
Ian Thornley is the finest musician ever...he is an absolute blessing to this world
Saw them last night here in Pittsburgh for the first time. I am glad they have been a part of my lifelong soundtrack. Awesome show.
I'm a rideshare driver in Michigan and I laugh when people say, "There's just no good music out there today" ... Then I put Big Wreck on, usually the live version of Blown Wide Open or Ghosts and I have NEVER had a customer not ask to know who it is...
@@ldf399 Correction, two services!
Ian is an absolute beast! Such a commanding vocal presence! That slide playing is so sweet!
A guitar beast he is!
How am I just finding out about this guy!! F'n unbelievable. Best guitar tone I've heard in awhile.
canadian .. underrated if ya ask me. seem them live a few times .. they are so sick
WOW - so much going on here besides just playing. Alternating between slide and fingering chords - picking and fingerpicking - adjusting the volume knob and PU selector - pedal tap dancing - and singing. Tons of practice / rehersal + desire + talent + great band + great gear = AWESOME!!!
Love It, merci.
A guy that makes the Guitar cry....Wow!
Fuck this is one of my favourite songs I hope to god I can see him play it live one day
We all need to help send Big Wreck World wide. Yes..a DVD or at least get these live videos from all the Suhr shows out in the public everywhere. I think they came out when the internet took over..where records sold less..plus all the rickers were having families..just unlucky timing. Plus..whoever- if anyone- was in charge of marketing these guys did not do a good enough job as well. Anyways..my God I'm a huge fan. Guitar player and songwriter myself..and I'm Taki g a huge huge cue and I fluency from Ian Thornley now. Thankyou Ian and all of Big Wreck. Behind you all the way!!!
Most creative slide playing I've ever seen!
Overemphasizing from Big Wreck's 1st album has one of the greatest slide solos ever
My god I have just discovered this guy and I am gobsmacked !!
Most Underrated "Guitarist," merci.
Sometimes the beautiful melody of this song makes me weepy almost cry.
Almost?
Amazing, low key Canadian boy... seen him several times. Love. See ya this summer 😊
Have never seen some of these techniques with a slide, amazing, he's a monster player
+Adam Shortt Like, who could even tab those solos, Ian's live material is insane. The final riff sounds a bit like Our World Our Times - Alannah Myles
He really is underrated and insanely good
and humble enough to say he's "just okay" at slide. He has an entire albums worth of crazy slide playing at this point!
"This is MUSIC,This is ART"!
3:49 that is some amazing vocal range #IanFletcherThornley, good job 👍
hubby and I have been listening for 20 plus years. Ian and crew are awesome!
Ian and Gordie Johnson are Canada's best kept secrets. By far the most amazing and unrecognized musicians!!
Tone for days and a wicked sense of melody. Guitarist who can tell a story within a story when he solos! A rare talent in today's shred world. Take note ALL YOUNG GUNS....restraint is often better than a.zillion notes. What's even more cool is the fact that when Thornley WANTS to rip.....he can and it's always tasteful. Just a badass that should be a HOUSEHOLD NAME
That band is second to none. Such talent.
That slide and tone and effects on it is wonderful.
This is probably the best signature guitarist/singer out there in 2022, and yet most of America has never heard of Ian or Big Wreck. One live shot of Ghosts and I think all of Blues Rock America would be hooked.
Wow I WAS VERY TEMPTED TO DRIVE 5 HOURS TO SEE BIG WRECK IN DALLAS. THIS SONG IS NOW MY FAVORITE BIG WRECK/IAN THORNLEY SONG
Ian Fletcher Thornley is SO much better than all the rest! The reason he's not at the top of the list when it comes to popularity IS!!! He never sold his soul to the devil and the music industry!
I was there that night and I can attest that during this song Ian, Dave and Randy completely transported this club into another dimension. It was like they went to another level of sonic reality and brought us all with them. This was one of the most spectacular live shows that I have ever seen.
He is doing what he is chosen to do.
Blessed and lucky!!
Luckily we can get close to what you experienced. I totally get what your saying
Felt the same here at home on the Atlantic coast a few months back in a small club setting. It truly is an experience to remember, and to see again soon!!!
Incredible talent! Unique and powerful!
I've heard that song for years. I've loved that song more every time Ian's played it live. I've just heard that song like I've never heard it before. I'm grateful to John Suhr and his team. For giving Ian an that extraordinary trio, the opportunity to REINVENT Under the Lighthouse.
+Scott Thornley I second that!
This is the first time I heard this version, and I like it better than the album version. Remarkable! And how about that groove beat right after "Under the Lighthouse!!"
His guitar work is absolutely stellar. One of my favorite singer/songwriter/musicians ever. Been following since 99 or so. Absolutely amazing. I love the new album Secrets too.
IAN You are outstanding . Your People around You are Outstanding as well !
Ian Thornley is greatness
My favorite song by Big wreck by far!! Its live and so incredibly well done. The guitar, the DRUMS are just so perfectly done. The last two minutes of the solo I've played no joke probably a 150 times. I fall asleep to this track. Really good music is rare these days it seems. Its been so commercialize and created for the most part by computers. Most of it couldn't be replicated live. Big wreck is amazing to see on stage. No smoke and mirrors with these guys.
Look What I Found live at suhr factory 2015 is a masterpiece brought to life as well. Undersold, hey mama, not to mention all of the 90s stuff. Ian is a Canadian legend. My new favorite is My House I think it's called. Amazing talent!!!!
the first 16 of this song might be my favorite rock lyrics of all time "down here under the lighthouse, upstairs you'll see for miles. Keep my name under the whiteout, Just let me miss you all the while" perfect example of really good rhyming also when he does the on purpose non rhyming letter - brain just after is so well done.
I love Big Wreck! How anyone could not appreciate this mans talent is unbelievable. Great voice, AMAZING guitarist.

The guys as amazing at singing as guitar
Randy Cooke is right on top of this song. A real treat you watch him. 3 superstar performers on that stage!!
Awesomeness! Merci beaucoup.
It's so great when a fabulous player gets to just let loose. Ian just takes off!
I've been playing this song over and over all morning and you know its good when you're disappointed when its over. So I just keep it on repeat. Thank you Ian for sharing your gift. This song takes you for a ride. Every single time. 🤯😱😍💯
That slide tone is insanely great. He is such a great guitar player, so creative. I love these guys
what a gorgeous song
Talent like this is rare, an absolutely phenomenal band, thanks for the music! Best band today, by far! Thanks guys!!
Wow its crazy how every emotion is touched here. Happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise etc. Someone please help me with a word for this because amazing, epic, phenomenal and inspirational jus dont seem to do it justice. These guys are on a whole different level.
So good it's ridiculous!
Loved the little tip of the hat to I Mother Earth during the slide solo. Ian is so underrated it's criminal.
Dude, totally got that vibe also with the progression. Love IME.
@@Vipr77 I Mother Earth - No one (about the 3:50 mark to 5:50). I don't know if Ian meant to do it, but I recognized it right away. Exact same progression.
"Awesomeness", merci.
Wow. I saw these guys live in North Bay and this song always stuck with me. Beautiful and haunting.
Virtuosos at their Best. Whats left to say?
I hope people realize the level of talent displayed right here...
Awesome! If I were in the audience I would stand up and go hysterical to this song!!!
He's not drawing energy from the crowd...breath taking performance. I've never seen slide playing like this!
A North American Legend. Please tour the USA! 🙏🇺🇸🇨🇦
With so much music out there. We tend to sometimes forget about some of our most favorites. This is life.
This, prayer, and that song... I the top 20 of all time for me!
My favourite Big Wreck song. 💙
Saw the band quite a few years back in Hamilton I went with my daughter she listens to Dance Trance stuff (how did I become my dad LOL) anyways she was so quiet.. kinda looked dazed thru the whole show I thought she hated it ..on a soft moment I said do you like this ..she said I didn't know a person could sing that good live... she was absolutely mesmerized ...I have played Pro for 40 plus years I felt the same way ... he is so far ahead of everyone else and his band is right there with him all incredible players ...What a sound HUGE just HUGE but so pleasing
What an amazing show of pure talent. What a treat to find this song. So enjoyable to listen to and to watch. I'm a proud Canadian watching this.
Still amazing in 2019, can't wait for the new one.
If only Randy Cooke was Big Wreck's drummer; his playing in all these videos is killer. Compliments Ian's improv perfectly.
Just shows - again - nothing is better then when it comes from the heart. Hail, REAL TRUE music!
Topshelf drummer. The man's a rhythm machine, ROCK DOG EXTRAORDINAIRE!
Genius!
One of the best live performers that everyone should see .
fantastic guitar and totally original style
Oh My, WaWawhat! If your a guitar player, your just watching and shaking your head and saying HOLY SHIT!
This man plays and sings no wrong notes.
Awesomeness, merci.
Ian the Man
What a monster guitar master...step aside Joey Bonamassa and everyone else! A true product of our great Canadian Music Scene!!
Rarely you see a guitar player that can shred and use tthe slide so well. Ian such a complete guitar player with feels to the roof ad good taste to choose notes
C'mon - The true consummate guitar player of the 21st century - guitar licks became a thing again without the bravado but true genius with a real measure of artistic ability - making the guitar solo grand again in this space in time I feel no one else can come close to even touch. IFT fucking rules!!! Thank you universe for this enigma.
Simply amazing.
Always been my favourite B.W. song. Outstanding live performance of it here. It’s eerie how much he sounds like Chris Cornell in certain moments in the song. 👍
Love your slide playing and tone bro. 🤘
Years ago while channel surfing I heard big wreck performance at snow job whistler BC i think, I was like wow, who is this, totally blew me away, went and bought cd as soon as I could, phenomenally talented and under rated, saw them years ago at edgefest in Ottawa
Genius ❤️
Somebody I love showed me this
This captures my feelings perfectly...just wow 🎸
So great!
Ian you continue to Amaze me! love this ♡♡♡! Blown Wide Open is my favorite....any version enjoy listening/watching to all the live performances!
Incredible.
This song is timeless! Great version! Thanks for sharing!
such an amazing artist!
This is awesome.
That was just---dang!
That guitar tone! Tone master...
Artistic goal : Ian Thornley
He's on another planet musically. We all wanna reach his level.
David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Alex Lifeson have all done it, but it began about 40+ years ago for them, lol.
I will settle for 1/2th Ian Thornley
@@Excalibur2112 don't forget Steve Howe.
wicked version :) and the drummer is awsome
Giggle &Wiggle
Thank Blue Rodeo for the loan 😉
Great drummer/drumming...
Sick slide work on top of some great Suhr tone!!
goddamn can this guy shred... fkn amazing!
Such a great song!
Fuck yeah!!! Chills to the max!
It´s not even fair! So good.
Down here under the lighthouse
Upstairs you see for miles
Keep my name under the white out
And just let me miss you all the while (yeah)Now I sit here with your letter
It's pushin' hard on my brain
You think they should shrink it
Well baby I think that's insaneNo you woulda left me anyway
Well I'll just bow my head
I swear you might've left me anyway
So I'll leave you instead (yeah)When I told you that I'm sorry
You told me that I'm full of fear
But when the music is just too loud
Well it's… When I told you that I'm sorry
You told me that I'm full of fear
But when the music is just too loud
Well it's not your voice I hear (yeah)Well you woulda left me anyway
So I'll just bow my head
I swear you might've left me anyway
So I'll leave you insteadBe alone
Let me bow my head
'Cause I'd rather be alone
Be alone
that guitar is gorgeous! very cool version of this song too :)
