The people(like my girlfriend and myself) whom "cared enough" to watch the end of this video... We wanted to say Thank You! The idea of having a temporary chip fix on hand, is ingenious! I'll be doing some research and adding to the roadside kits in our vehicles. Thank you for the idea Larry!
Thank you for showing the entire process; the failures as well as success! Very relatable to most people, and I learned more from seeing how things can go wrong than just seeing a perfectly edited "perfect" scenerio. Very much appreciate the transparency.
Martini Mcfly I second this, I know the feeling of doing hours of work only to realize you need to start over from scratch. Life isn’t a perfectly edited scenario and it’s really good to see how to deal with failure!
Hi Larry! Building and painting scale models almost all of my teen and adult years tells me that if you have or borrow an airbrush and the right thinning agent for the scratch wizard paint may do the trick. Transitioning from hand painted models to airbrush painted ones was a god send before, maybe an airbrush will be a useful tool in your arsenal :)
Words cannot describe how much I love your channel! I've always been a "knowledge-driven" person, and have always wanted to know AS MUCH AS I POSSIBLY COULD about my current vehicle to keep it in exceptional, or at the very worst, "pretty good" condition.. but your channel (I feel) has elevated my knowledge, and helped me be a little more "car savvy" (if-you-will). I love all the tips and tricks to keeping your car- be it a beater, or an Aston Martin- (mine happens to be a little closer to the "beater" end lol) looking as good as it POSSIBLY CAN. Thank you so much!!
When I have this type of struggle I tend to beat myself up about not being able to do things perfectly. "If only I had the right products, and the right expertise..." This is something I've felt not only with my silver Z4 but also working on electronics or other personal projects. Normally, howto videos make any process look so effortless that it's frustrating for me as a young-ish broke-ish DIYer when I don't as quickly get the same results. It's nice to see that even an expert can struggle with fixing these little things.
Hahaha thanks for uploading this. It's worth seeing a pro like you get frustrated, makes us all remember we are human. I think the main difficulty with this is that body line, I'm sure if you spent forever on it you could build the filler up to that peak, sand each face as though it's a different plane (same thing you teach with compounding and polishing) and then apply a sticker maybe with heat so it can wrap in one piece? Great video, thanks again.
Hey Larry, one trick I’ve had good luck with when trying to level touch up paint or that putty has been to wrap the towel around a meguiars foam sanding block. This keeps your finger from pushing into the depression and allows you better follow the body surface and level the putty with the solvent with better results. Just my tip. Great video!
Glad to learn from your experience instead of having the experience myself. Great tip on the stickers, which prevent further damage until you can get all of your dings, dents and chipped areas repaired professionally at one time. Thanks for taking the time to work through this problem and showing us how hard it can be to use touchup paint effectively, the benefits of using leveler to correct mistakes, and the effectiveness of using paint-matched stickers. All-in-all a very useful video and thanks for making it. If you find a way to get the paint stickers to fully adhere to the putty, please let your viewers know.
You have restored my confidence, Larry. I bought a touch-up kit for my car from VW and what I got was a 2-part (color and clear) touch up kit and my car is metallic. And to compound the problem, they were paint pens not proper paint bottles. I was able to touch up smaller dings but could not get the dispersion right on larger ones and never got the clear to flow in any useful way and gave up. Now I know it's not that I was incompetent but that I was trying to do the impossible. thank you :D
One of your best videos yet...excellent info and great comic relief! As a fellow detailer, I feel your pain going down the rabbit hole of perfection as well as spending countless hours on said "perfection." Well done, sir!
As people stated, time to learn how to use an AIRBRUSH Larry! It's just the perfect excuse to buy one too. Afterwards use the polisher to remove any overspray and make it almost perfect :) You could have sanded down the bump or even cut it flat with a razer blade and then fill everything with bondo. Great vid!
I agree Metallic paint is difficult for larger surface areas. An Airbrush sounds good. I had to feather in the paint from spray can and then the clear coat 2x harder glamour can.
The fleck will show and if doing various cars. It takes LOTS of cleaning per color. Plus the wind. amount of waste isnt cost effective. Even with black paints. Even the same make, will have blue, red, green, big/small/tiny fleck. It won't always 'pay for itself. Plus many are stupid pearl based paints...
I found a guy who was a Michelangelo with an airbrush that made a spot like this literally disappear for $100 or some ridiculously small amount. After he fixed it I couldn't find any evidence it ever existed. It blew my mind.
I run a mobile SMART repair company. I'd have had that sanded back, filled, sanded, primed, sanded, keyed, painted, lacquered and blended in 3 hours. There would be no trace of the damage and you'd have a lifetime warranty. This sort of thing is honestly easy to fix if you just get a professional to do it.
FYI: The prices for the wrap vary on color, size, shapes etc...the cheapest I noticed on the website was roughly $30, but call them to get the specifics. Hope that helps. :)
it's very good that you tried that much and you show as all your techniques. I am not a proffesional by any way just i love spending time in my car. I had a huge hole in my rear plastic bumper. What i did was to sanding down a bigger area than the whole down to the clear plastic. I put a mesh filler pads from 3m then 3m plastic filler and then 2 coats of primer one prebase coat and 2 layers of base coat 1 layer of clear coat. After that i let it dry for 5 days and then i wet sand a bigger area than where the hole was and finally i polish the whole bumper. The result was perfect. I used spray cans for the whole procedure. A lot easier than playing with the painting small brushes.

Thank you for showing this. Its somehow comforting that even a pro such as yourself, still struggles from time to time. It takes a confident man to admit his imperfections, especially to the entire world.
I tried touching up a similar size damage mark on the front fender, and the results came out similar to yours. I’m not happy with them at all. But it made me feel better after seeing this video of yours. Thanks.
I remember having asked a question yesterday on the Porsche resto video, regarding touching up metallic paint. With this video you answered it all. Seems a professional like you has the same struggles as I am having with the metallic particles not lining up as spray paint would. The stickers are a great suggestion, but ordering them from Europe would cost a fortune in mailing costs. When it gets warmer again, I have a plastic front bumper that the previous owner of my vehicle damaged. I'll try my best on there, since it is silver metallic like your Ford. Hope I'll learn something on the way. Thanks for the insight, Larry.
As someone that's been painting cars for 40 years I enjoyed your struggle, having been there I can tell you you had no chance with the touch up paint brush on metallic silver. Those stickers surprised me, they are a great match on the video, I've never tried them myself. Btw heat up the high spot and push it down next time.
our group in germany orded 80 paint pen`s just because your video. It was cheap beacuse of the 80. So we have to thank you for the paint pen video and the others also. For me u are a legend. Keep up the good work. Greetings from germany.
Thanks so much for putting this up. I actually found your channel last summer when I was trying to do almost the exact same repair... All the way down to the same metallic paint. It was good to see your frustration... I thought it was just me. I spent two days doing 12 rounds of the fill, sand, paint routine!
Fantastic persistence. The quality of the wrap colour match is amazing. An airbrush could be something for you to try if you want to go further down that rabbit hole, but it is still not amazing with metallic paint.
Larry, you are the king of kool! A video of me at 3 in the morning would feature me mumbling profanities incoherently at the camera with those stickers expertly misplaced on my forehead or stuck securely to what was left of my hair....
*Should have corrected that 'ridge-line' by applying heat gun BEFORE bondo, and mold running.* Would have saved a lots of filling. sprinkle some nail polish glitter on it in the mix. You will be surprised.
I'm so glad you mentioned that Amazon sold out of the pain pen. I purchased one but it never came. Now I have a clue what may have happened. Oh that was funny "you got so frustrated at the touch up you were ready to sell the car". You are mental, but that's why we love your videos! And yes, I was here until the end.
Love the fact that Larry knows how much of a geek he and his viewers. Towards the end “if you’re the type of person who watched to the end of this” it’s all about knowing your audience!
I definitely like your style. You have a good sense of humor. I for one could never do something like this, it is way too tedious. You are a better man than I.
Its good to see someone fail and try new things to solve problems. This way we dont make the same mistakes. This video makes me miss the good ol days of Chrome bumpers.
One of my favorite youtube channels of ALL TIME! I truly admire all you do for us! I've been doing clear bra for 12 years and the only suggestion I might have for anyone doing the sticker is: try not to have sharp corners, it will be too easy to catch those edges when cleaning or wiping that area. Also - let anyone who washes or details your car know about the sticker so they won't ruin your good work. Thanks again AMMO NYC! I tell all my friends to watch you! I always learn so much from you! and Thanks for using Xpel! I've been with them since 2006 :)
I had a scuff in my bumber. The scuff was long and lots of ridges in the paint. I sanded it with 240 sandpaper to level the ridges. Then all the way to 2000. Then i got color maching touchup (black metallic) after the touch up. I only taped the damage area and put a spray clearcoat on it and let it dry over night, then wet sand with 2000-4000 and then polish. Really came out good👍
Hi Larry, to prevent an uneven surface like the one with the first sticker, use a sanding block or a piece of wood like the pallets for stiring paint when you sand the putty, this also helps to featheredge the putty to the paint keeping it even
Thanks for the video. All of us can tell you spent a ton of time on it. Your wife may not appreciate the absence of you but we are grateful for the insite. As always you are very thorough.
Hey I am a massive car enthusiast have painted Warhammer for years. You should consider watering down the colour and applying it in thin coats, using a bigger brush.
Mettalic Silver is a nightmare! I’ve been trying to come up with a process and using my car as a test panel. The flakes just do not lay down to same way and can easily be picked up in sunlight. The easiest fix I found so far is from Dr. Colorchip. I’ll keep at it though! Nice video. 👍🏻

spent hours upon hours trying to touch up a metallic 5 series ... impossible! ... this is a much better solution for an everyday get around vehicle... thanks!
Exactly why I avoided watching this video for a while... it confirmed I’m not alone in the universe. I went through a similar experience this summer fixing a stone chip. I love that I’m not the only one who works to a point that the brain suggests selling the car and starting over! I love it, thank you for putting up this video! Your wife sounds as patient as my wife! I ended up using a flag sticker to cover it and couldn’t be happier. Cheers Larry! Get some rest
I love that you are an absolute fanatic about what you do. I just got a car with nice paint and look forward to using your videos to help me protect it.
Great video showing frustrations of a bodywork repair! But why not do the following: - sand off the protruding plastic bits; - use putty to fill the dented space so the shape matches what should be there; - sand down with P2500 to smooth the surface; - spray paint colour coating; - spray lacquer to finish?
Sometimes if you pour very hot water on a plastic panel it will return to its original shape like a memory foam. Maybe try that first then skim it with bondo or sticker. Awesome video as usual 👍
Hi. You can try to apply the paint direct to the damage, layer by layer than you nearly get filled the big hole. Then fill the rest with clear coat only. Let it dry several hours (it needs to be perfectly dry) . After that level it sanding and polishing. This trick works allways for me ;) (Sorry for my english!) I'm waiting for the result!
Bruhhh First off all awesome video, you truly inspired me to start my own detail business. You are on the right track, all you need to do is have a airbrush kit and touch it up. Keep up the awesome work man...cant thank you enough.
I learned something new today! I had no idea that liquid leveler existed. I really enjoyed this review/tutorial. I think that anything that creates a high spot on a panel is beyond touch-up and turns into body work lol. Great video!
I have watched your videos and subscribed today based on your honest feedback. This problem you had is one we all have and it really is about managing expectations. That is why stickers are great because it stops a perfectionist (me) going crazy and potentially doing damage.
Yeah I’ve made a mistake of charging a customer $5 because I thought it was a simple job, but once I started working I realized it wasn’t as simple and ended up taking 2 hours on it. Point is never tell a customer how much you will charge before you start working. But hey you learn as you go :)
You could've poured the paint into a airbrush. That's used for small model cars. Tape the surrounding area first with painters tape. I know it's a little late, but it probably would've been a better option.
Excellent! My car has a small paint scratch on the bumper but the original contour was unaffected. So I think my best choice will be to use the stickers. It is a solid yellow and I won't have to worry about the 'grain pattern' of the metallic particles matching up👍👏🤝Thanks😉!
This is a great product! The color match stickers covers much better that touch up paint. They matched the white diamond color on my Escalade perfectly. It does what I consider to be a 10 foot touch up repair. Looks really good from 10 feet away. Thanks for a really good touch up product!
Thank you so much for an honest video of how difficult this can be, and the truth about the end result. You have saved me a lot of time and frustration. Failure is often a better teacher than success.
The spot putty is lacquer based...the solvent to remove excess putty is basically lacquer thinner.Duplicolor paint prep solvent is a milder formula of lacquer thinner and you can use it to remove excess putty. 40 years as a master painter
I've not used the wrap on scuffs or dings... but I did use a similar product to redo some striping on the side of my old, no ancient, caravan/trailer I was tidying up to sell... it looked pretty good when I had finished.

@@BoopSnoot if you watch his videos he definitely knows what he's doing, however the point of this video wasnt to make the car look perfect again (it's not a 6 or 7 digit vehicle) but to try and fix it fast and reasonably easy.
Thank you for showing this. Its somehow comforting that even a pro such as yourself, still struggles from time to time. It takes a confident man to admit his imperfections, especially to the entire world.
Clearly the star patch is for asteroid damaged cars. I believe they sold very well in Russia 2013.
I think the star one is to look like a hidden shaped sticker at close range, and not a cover up patch.
I tried touching up a similar size damage mark on the front fender, and the results came out similar to yours. I’m not happy with them at all.
But it made me feel better after seeing this video of yours. Thanks.
Next time try buffing it off with Mr. Clean magic eraser!
Will a magic eraser blend the paint as well?
Buff what off? The missing paint?
I remember having asked a question yesterday on the Porsche resto video, regarding touching up metallic paint. With this video you answered it all. Seems a professional like you has the same struggles as I am having with the metallic particles not lining up as spray paint would. The stickers are a great suggestion, but ordering them from Europe would cost a fortune in mailing costs. When it gets warmer again, I have a plastic front bumper that the previous owner of my vehicle damaged. I'll try my best on there, since it is silver metallic like your Ford. Hope I'll learn something on the way. Thanks for the insight, Larry.
U needed to use a heat gun and heat the bumper to reshape it then fill and sand it then use an airbrush to paint it
As someone that's been painting cars for 40 years I enjoyed your struggle, having been there I can tell you you had no chance with the touch up paint brush on metallic silver.
1am in the morning, meant to be asleep... Can't resist watching!
Fantastic persistence. The quality of the wrap colour match is amazing. An airbrush could be something for you to try if you want to go further down that rabbit hole, but it is still not amazing with metallic paint.
Your agony is gorgeous! Great video as always.
Great video. I bought a used Porsche that arrived with a nasty scratch on the roof.. having watched your videos gave me the confidence to do the fix.
Larry, you are the king of kool! A video of me at 3 in the morning would feature me mumbling profanities incoherently at the camera with those stickers expertly misplaced on my forehead or stuck securely to what was left of my hair....
Good news! The Loew-Cornell brush is back in stock! I just ordered one.
Fast fix... aaaaaand 7-8 hours later. :P
Quality touch ups aren't "fast"
Stickers aren't quality but they're fast
aaaaand it still looks like shit.
*Should have corrected that 'ridge-line' by applying heat gun BEFORE bondo, and mold running.* Would have saved a lots of filling. sprinkle some nail polish glitter on it in the mix. You will be surprised.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
I'm so glad you mentioned that Amazon sold out of the pain pen. I purchased one but it never came. Now I have a clue what may have happened. Oh that was funny "you got so frustrated at the touch up you were ready to sell the car". You are mental, but that's why we love your videos! And yes, I was here until the end.
I love ya Larry, I need to find an OCD detailer like you!
Love the fact that Larry knows how much of a geek he and his viewers. Towards the end “if you’re the type of person who watched to the end of this” it’s all about knowing your audience!
What if you took down the ridge with a dremel and filled it back in with bondo?
yea this was totally fixable. He just dosnt have the knowledge of autobody repair.
No way in a million years I could have seen YOU giving a thumbs up to a sticker. LOVE IT!
I love the stickers man!
What's the risk of going through the plastic? You use bondo anyway
Thanks for going to so much trouble to demonstrate these techniques. You have to respect a guy who shows his failures as well as his skills.
Why not using a sponge instead? Or a spray? You can use a big plastic bag, put a hole were the hit is located and spay it over again.
Cheers
Not sure why there are so many dislikes. This is a great video, and I love your honesty with your frustration in the narration. Thanks for sharing!
How come you didn't try to heat the bumper and push out the dent first?
My thoughts exactly. I'm sure there was probably a reason.
And to push IN the top bit too.
I am totally a novice, but wouldn't heating the bumper enough to push out the dent have caused even greater paint damage in nearby areas?
I definitely like your style. You have a good sense of humor. I for one could never do something like this, it is way too tedious. You are a better man than I.
larry you should have used an airbrush from harbor freight to get a good fix lol
beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing, airbrush.
Its good to see someone fail and try new things to solve problems. This way we dont make the same mistakes. This video makes me miss the good ol days of Chrome bumpers.
Larry, I have the Loew-Cornell fine tip pen that you used on the museum Porsche. Would that tool work better on this type of bumper scuff?
Unlikely, if anything you want a larger brush to show less individual brush strokes
I'm one of those people who made it to the end :D
This is the Larry equivalent of a raving review, we all know how “crazy” you are, so good enough for you is really quite a complement on the product
Why not use an airbrush??
I think the point of the sticker and trying the touch up is for people who don’t have an airbrush, but I agree, it was my first thought.
Really came out good👍
Hmm. Somebody mistakenly disliked this video.
Hi Larry, to prevent an uneven surface like the one with the first sticker, use a sanding block or a piece of wood like the pallets for stiring paint when you sand the putty, this also helps to featheredge the putty to the paint keeping it even
Without repeating yourself the video would be 2 min
I’ve been doing auto body for a few years now and I can say I love the knowledge that he knows! Even as a detailer.
must be the wifes car xD
Larry I work in a body shop and the best method I found is to use airbrush with reduced paint.add light coats and it works great
hey man dont know if u care or not but your plate isnt blurred
Probably isn't blurred when the car's being driven, either!
Thanks for the video. All of us can tell you spent a ton of time on it. Your wife may not appreciate the absence of you but we are grateful for the insite. As always you are very thorough.
Seemed more fuss then it was worth.
Thanks for your efforts and patience with filming the whole process, including the failures. For what it is, that wrap looks legit!
i can repaint that for you in 45 mins for 200$ with high quality auto paint =]
04av6 that’s 170$ to much
oh wow, you can repaint for 30$? where
it costs 30$ for the sticker.. Thats what he ment.
Why not just use a spraycan and blend it in? Would be the best solution for the money.
Ill do it in 20minutes because I have a trainee mixing paint.
i can repaint hole car for less than 100$
and before asking were i well answer you, in Yemen ^_^
Hey I am a massive car enthusiast have painted Warhammer for years. You should consider watering down the colour and applying it in thin coats, using a bigger brush.
Mettalic Silver is a nightmare! I’ve been trying to come up with a process and using my car as a test panel. The flakes just do not lay down to same way and can easily be picked up in sunlight. The easiest fix I found so far is from Dr. Colorchip. I’ll keep at it though! Nice video. 👍🏻
ganymedeIV4 Yes, I thought about buying one just to get the flakes to try and mimic how it’s put down at the factory. I’m kind of excited to try it out! Thank you for the reply.
spent hours upon hours trying to touch up a metallic 5 series ... impossible! ... this is a much better solution for an everyday get around vehicle...
Thats what makes your videos so great Larry, you show us the trail and error on things like these! Thanks to go extra mile(s) for us!!
I love that you are an absolute fanatic about what you do. I just got a car with nice paint and look forward to using your videos to help me protect it.
Great video showing frustrations of a bodywork repair!
But why not do the following:
- sand off the protruding plastic bits;
- use putty to fill the dented space so the shape matches what should be there;
- sand down with P2500 to smooth the surface;
- spray paint colour coating;
- spray lacquer to finish?
Sometimes if you pour very hot water on a plastic panel it will return to its original shape like a memory foam. Maybe try that first then skim it with bondo or sticker. Awesome video as usual 👍
Hi. You can try to apply the paint direct to the damage, layer by layer than you nearly get filled the big hole. Then fill the rest with clear coat only. Let it dry several hours (it needs to be perfectly dry) . After that level it sanding and polishing. This trick works allways for me ;) (Sorry for my english!)
I'm waiting for the result!
Bruhhh First off all awesome video, you truly inspired me to start my own detail business.
You are on the right track, all you need to do is have a airbrush kit and touch it up. Keep up the awesome work man...cant thank you enough.
Thank you for putting this video up, because I'm sure it was super frustrating, and the struggling through it is the most valuable part, really.
You could've poured the paint into
a airbrush. That's used for small
model cars. Tape the surrounding
area first with painters tape.
I know it's a little late, but it
probably would've been a better
option.
Your frustration and time spent is greatly appreciated
thank you
Man !! I love your honesty, but love your determination more ! That was a tough one !
Wow, 7 - 8 HOURS to get it right for your video! That's dedication, man. Good job!
I have a Honda Civic with metallic paint and a similar situation. Just want to thank you!! you save me a lot of time. I will level it out my best then order the sticker LOL you're the man. Thanks
This made me chuckle so much, the comments when his wife came in and about his frustration about not being able to get it looking good enough. All points I know all too well, making it even funnier lol
"You have some serious issues" lol!
