- In this video, I'm testing a new product called ColorMatchWrap.com and PaintChipStickers.com . These are car wraps that printed in your specific vehicle color designed to hide damage to your paint. I show 3 methods that commonly work for cosmetic bumpers repairs, but I'm shocked to see which one worked out best. Hope this helps! _L

Thank you for showing the entire process; the failures as well as success! Very relatable to most people, and I learned more from seeing how things can go wrong than just seeing a perfectly edited "perfect" scenerio. Very much appreciate the transparency.
Martini Mcfly I second this, I know the feeling of doing hours of work only to realize you need to start over from scratch. Life isn’t a perfectly edited scenario and it’s really good to see how to deal with failure!
Defininitely agree as well. It is exhausting seeing so many videos that run into zero problems during repairs that I know would have had problems.
I agree.. it is so great when you show problems that may happen. It's more helpful than a video showing everything going perfectly. Thank you!
there was no success in this video
YES!
Your level of OCD and dedication makes me happy because i am the same way. Thank you for all your hard work and knowledge Larry
The people(like my girlfriend and myself) whom "cared enough" to watch the end of this video... We wanted to say Thank You! The idea of having a temporary chip fix on hand, is ingenious! I'll be doing some research and adding to the roadside kits in our vehicles.
Thank you for the idea Larry!
Hahaha thanks for uploading this. It's worth seeing a pro like you get frustrated, makes us all remember we are human. I think the main difficulty with this is that body line, I'm sure if you spent forever on it you could build the filler up to that peak, sand each face as though it's a different plane (same thing you teach with compounding and polishing) and then apply a sticker maybe with heat so it can wrap in one piece? Great video, thanks again.
Just put an AMMO sticker over it.
how to appear as a detailer: cover every damaged part of your car with detailing stickers. Thats genius ;´D

There is no solution, time to buy another car.
Thinking the same thing. Only fix for this is a 991.2 GT2 RS....
Max N you can always wrap your car for around 3 to 5 k
It costs that much to wrap a car?! DAMN! Cheaper to repaint it.
Max N it depends on where you go and the material you get so every shop has their price. The cheapest place will do it around 1,500 for a satin finish
Hahahahaha
Words cannot describe how much I love your channel! I've always been a "knowledge-driven" person, and have always wanted to know AS MUCH AS I POSSIBLY COULD about my current vehicle to keep it in exceptional, or at the very worst, "pretty good" condition.. but your channel (I feel) has elevated my knowledge, and helped me be a little more "car savvy" (if-you-will).
I love all the tips and tricks to keeping your car- be it a beater, or an Aston Martin- (mine happens to be a little closer to the "beater" end lol) looking as good as it POSSIBLY CAN.
Thank you so much!!
One of your best videos yet...excellent info and great comic relief! As a fellow detailer, I feel your pain going down the rabbit hole of perfection as well as spending countless hours on said "perfection." Well done, sir!
Another great video Larry!!! Haha 7-8 hours time flies when you're going for perfection!! I feel your pain though. People just hit your car and don't understand the time and effort it takes to fix there careless mistake
Damn, I didn't expect the stickers to be that good.
Since they`re near perfectly colour matched they can`t be too bad. At least as a temporary solution.
Glad to learn from your experience instead of having the experience myself. Great tip on the stickers, which prevent further damage until you can get all of your dings, dents and chipped areas repaired professionally at one time. Thanks for taking the time to work through this problem and showing us how hard it can be to use touchup paint effectively, the benefits of using leveler to correct mistakes, and the effectiveness of using paint-matched stickers. All-in-all a very useful video and thanks for making it. If you find a way to get the paint stickers to fully adhere to the putty, please let your viewers know.
Hi Larry! Building and painting scale models almost all of my teen and adult years tells me that if you have or borrow an airbrush and the right thinning agent for the scratch wizard paint may do the trick. Transitioning from hand painted models to airbrush painted ones was a god send before, maybe an airbrush will be a useful tool in your arsenal :)
Isn't this car a lease? These touch up stickers are perfect for lease returns lol
Yes they are!
I want those stickers, where did he get them!?
@@AW-gj4ji I think it's in description. If not mentioned. Now- color matches aren't anywhere near perfect. Especially if you match a panel vs bumper. How far off depends on what angle you see it. But I suppose to the non-skeptic most wouldn't notice. I di something close for a living. I can walk by a car and see almost EVERY ding, scratch,'Repair', chip. I am sure the details on how people try to cover up stuff would bore you.
@@UZI9MMAUTO Yeah, I notice every small little details too, but some idiot scuffed my front bumper while my car was parked. I got quoted 600$ to fix it, I think I will be able to deal with some cover up for a while till I get enough damages where I would repaint the whole car instead.
@@AW-gj4ji Why I park but FAR from everyone. What color is your bumper and is it a Pearl? P.S. If you have paint transfer. You can use diluted floor wax stripper and a rag :) That is one of our tricks. Otherwise go in various up,down,up, side to side motions with a safe thinner, DO NOT 'rub' it out fast.[Go light in either chemical and take you time- vary in directions] Otherwise You'll have a nasty score on the clear. The idiot detail guys do this and it looks like crud. Big rubbing scores all over a small stain.
As people stated, time to learn how to use an AIRBRUSH Larry! It's just the perfect excuse to buy one too.
Afterwards use the polisher to remove any overspray and make it almost perfect :)
You could have sanded down the bump or even cut it flat with a razer blade and then fill everything with bondo.
Great vid!
I agree Metallic paint is difficult for larger surface areas. An Airbrush sounds good. I had to feather in the paint from spray can and then the clear coat 2x harder glamour can.
The fleck will show and if doing various cars. It takes LOTS of cleaning per color. Plus the wind. amount of waste isnt cost effective. Even with black paints. Even the same make, will have blue, red, green, big/small/tiny fleck. It won't always 'pay for itself. Plus many are stupid pearl based paints...
I found a guy who was a Michelangelo with an airbrush that made a spot like this literally disappear for $100 or some ridiculously small amount. After he fixed it I couldn't find any evidence it ever existed. It blew my mind.
@@claytonhinkle5468 do you by chance live in FL? I would love to use his services and tip him generously!
Hey Larry, one trick I’ve had good luck with when trying to level touch up paint or that putty has been to wrap the towel around a meguiars foam sanding block. This keeps your finger from pushing into the depression and allows you better follow the body surface and level the putty with the solvent with better results. Just my tip. Great video!
Excellent! My car has a small paint scratch on the bumper but the original contour was unaffected. So I think my best choice will be to use the stickers. It is a solid yellow and I won't have to worry about the 'grain pattern' of the metallic particles matching up👍👏🤝Thanks😉!
My friend and I finally DID manage to get some of the paint pens... Took us five months to source them! You really did a number on the supply chain for those things...
They are for sale on etsy for $8.99 deliveres. I got mine in 3 days from Michigan from an Hofcraft, an supply store.
P Schmied We're in the UK, which makes things a little more difficult.
Your agony is gorgeous! Great video as always.
When I have this type of struggle I tend to beat myself up about not being able to do things perfectly. "If only I had the right products, and the right expertise..." This is something I've felt not only with my silver Z4 but also working on electronics or other personal projects. Normally, howto videos make any process look so effortless that it's frustrating for me as a young-ish broke-ish DIYer when I don't as quickly get the same results. It's nice to see that even an expert can struggle with fixing these little things.
Only Larry would post a video that's 16 minutes long with the word "fast" in the title.
Love you man, keep up the good work.
Next time try buffing it off with Mr. Clean magic eraser!
Will a magic eraser blend the paint as well?
Buff what off? The missing paint?
FYI: The prices for the wrap vary on color, size, shapes etc...the cheapest I noticed on the website was roughly $30, but call them to get the specifics. Hope that helps. :)
What's the site?
Would it have been possible to use touch up along the edges of the sticker to help blend it in?
AMMO NYC will it hold up during a wash?
Francisco Arroyo as long as you don't blast it with a pressure washer, you're good

I'm so glad you mentioned that Amazon sold out of the pain pen. I purchased one but it never came. Now I have a clue what may have happened. Oh that was funny "you got so frustrated at the touch up you were ready to sell the car". You are mental, but that's why we love your videos! And yes, I was here until the end.
Thanks so much for putting this up. I actually found your channel last summer when I was trying to do almost the exact same repair... All the way down to the same metallic paint. It was good to see your frustration... I thought it was just me. I spent two days doing 12 rounds of the fill, sand, paint routine!
I love ya Larry, I need to find an OCD detailer like you!
Lmfao I loved the frustration commentary, I can relate.

Including frustrated viewers who thought they were going to watch a helpful how-to, and ended up just watching a guy that has no clue what he's doing throw poop at a wall for several hours.
@@BoopSnoot if you watch his videos he definitely knows what he's doing, however the point of this video wasnt to make the car look perfect again (it's not a 6 or 7 digit vehicle) but to try and fix it fast and reasonably easy.
Thank you for showing this. Its somehow comforting that even a pro such as yourself, still struggles from time to time. It takes a confident man to admit his imperfections, especially to the entire world.
You have restored my confidence, Larry. I bought a touch-up kit for my car from VW and what I got was a 2-part (color and clear) touch up kit and my car is metallic. And to compound the problem, they were paint pens not proper paint bottles. I was able to touch up smaller dings but could not get the dispersion right on larger ones and never got the clear to flow in any useful way and gave up. Now I know it's not that I was incompetent but that I was trying to do the impossible. thank you :D
Even though you didn’t get the results you wanted, I still enjoyed this video
How? It's completely superfluous. Idiot.
Jonathan Hardman, I usually don't reply to trolls, but why did you feel the need to call the guy an idiot? 😳 You can still enjoy the content, I know I did. Larry is so cute. 😄
@@Jonnzor Don´t call the guy an idiot! Idiot!
He showed us how to avoid making the same mistake - it's like any craft or trade - in tech work they call it the 10,000 hours rule or 5 years of long hours of coding where you reach a point where you've seen it all - compare with the jerks you sometimes have to work with don't share and enjoy watching you go down a long and pointless rabbit hole
watching this reminded me of the time I had a very full grocery bag with a carton of 12 eggs on the top - I was in a crosswalk with cars stopped in both directions - somehow the carton of eggs fell off, landed flat on the road - you the hear 12 eggs breaking simultaneously - every person in every car was trying hard not to laugh - someone called out - hey, did they break?
1am in the morning, meant to be asleep... Can't resist watching!
Good news! The Loew-Cornell brush is back in stock! I just ordered one.
Thanks for your efforts and patience with filming the whole process, including the failures. For what it is, that wrap looks legit!
U needed to use a heat gun and heat the bumper to reshape it then fill and sand it then use an airbrush to paint it
I love the stickers man!
What's the risk of going through the plastic? You use bondo anyway
I’ve been doing auto body for a few years now and I can say I love the knowledge that he knows! Even as a detailer.
I tried touching up a similar size damage mark on the front fender, and the results came out similar to yours. I’m not happy with them at all.
But it made me feel better after seeing this video of yours. Thanks.
Sanding with a flat block would have better knocked down the high spots.
Yes. A hard and flat block. This is like grading a land with a spring rake. I really respect the himility though
our group in germany orded 80 paint pen`s just because your video. It was cheap beacuse of the 80. So we have to thank you for the paint pen video and the others also. For me u are a legend. Keep up the good work. Greetings from germany.
Putty and sand, isolate surrounding 3-6 inches of damage, primer, base, clear, wet sand, and polish out. Repairs like this have started an entire new paint repair niche!
I remember having asked a question yesterday on the Porsche resto video, regarding touching up metallic paint. With this video you answered it all. Seems a professional like you has the same struggles as I am having with the metallic particles not lining up as spray paint would. The stickers are a great suggestion, but ordering them from Europe would cost a fortune in mailing costs. When it gets warmer again, I have a plastic front bumper that the previous owner of my vehicle damaged. I'll try my best on there, since it is silver metallic like your Ford. Hope I'll learn something on the way. Thanks for the insight, Larry.
Fast fix... aaaaaand 7-8 hours later. :P
Quality touch ups aren't "fast"
Stickers aren't quality but they're fast
aaaaand it still looks like shit.
*Should have corrected that 'ridge-line' by applying heat gun BEFORE bondo, and mold running.* Would have saved a lots of filling. sprinkle some nail polish glitter on it in the mix. You will be surprised.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Larry, I have the Loew-Cornell fine tip pen that you used on the museum Porsche. Would that tool work better on this type of bumper scuff?
Unlikely, if anything you want a larger brush to show less individual brush strokes
Thank you so much for sharing the product info. This saved me a ton of money, time and aggravation. Love your work.
One of my favorite youtube channels of ALL TIME! I truly admire all you do for us! I've been doing clear bra for 12 years and the only suggestion I might have for anyone doing the sticker is: try not to have sharp corners, it will be too easy to catch those edges when cleaning or wiping that area. Also - let anyone who washes or details your car know about the sticker so they won't ruin your good work. Thanks again AMMO NYC! I tell all my friends to watch you! I always learn so much from you! and Thanks for using Xpel! I've been with them since 2006 :)
Larry, you are the king of kool! A video of me at 3 in the morning would feature me mumbling profanities incoherently at the camera with those stickers expertly misplaced on my forehead or stuck securely to what was left of my hair....
Clearly the star patch is for asteroid damaged cars. I believe they sold very well in Russia 2013.
I think the star one is to look like a hidden shaped sticker at close range, and not a cover up patch.
it's very good that you tried that much and you show as all your techniques. I am not a proffesional by any way just i love spending time in my car. I had a huge hole in my rear plastic bumper. What i did was to sanding down a bigger area than the whole down to the clear plastic. I put a mesh filler pads from 3m then 3m plastic filler and then 2 coats of primer one prebase coat and 2 layers of base coat 1 layer of clear coat. After that i let it dry for 5 days and then i wet sand a bigger area than where the hole was and finally i polish the whole bumper. The result was perfect. I used spray cans for the whole procedure. A lot easier than playing with the painting small brushes.
Thats what makes your videos so great Larry, you show us the trail and error on things like these! Thanks to go extra mile(s) for us!!
What if you took down the ridge with a dremel and filled it back in with bondo?
yea this was totally fixable. He just dosnt have the knowledge of autobody repair.
larry you should have used an airbrush from harbor freight to get a good fix lol
beat me to it. I was going to say the same thing, airbrush.
I learned something new today! I had no idea that liquid leveler existed. I really enjoyed this review/tutorial. I think that anything that creates a high spot on a panel is beyond touch-up and turns into body work lol. Great video!
Bruhhh First off all awesome video, you truly inspired me to start my own detail business.
You are on the right track, all you need to do is have a airbrush kit and touch it up. Keep up the awesome work man...cant thank you enough.
How come you didn't try to heat the bumper and push out the dent first?
My thoughts exactly. I'm sure there was probably a reason.
And to push IN the top bit too.
I am totally a novice, but wouldn't heating the bumper enough to push out the dent have caused even greater paint damage in nearby areas?
I'm one of those people who made it to the end :D
Love the fact that Larry knows how much of a geek he and his viewers. Towards the end “if you’re the type of person who watched to the end of this” it’s all about knowing your audience!
Thank you for showing me the frustration that I might encounter when I get to touching up the rock chips and scuffs on my car, and the trial and error you went though.
Why not using a sponge instead? Or a spray? You can use a big plastic bag, put a hole were the hit is located and spay it over again.
Cheers
must be the wifes car xD
Larry, you’re a lunatic, but we love you for it! I can certainly relate to you not letting it beat it but I felt so bad for you watching how tired you were at the end of the video. Thanks so much for posting, I had no idea those stickers existed!
Great video. I bought a used Porsche that arrived with a nasty scratch on the roof.. having watched your videos gave me the confidence to do the fix.
Why not use an airbrush??
I think the point of the sticker and trying the touch up is for people who don’t have an airbrush, but I agree, it was my first thought.
Hmm. Somebody mistakenly disliked this video.
Thanks for this video Larry. Loved seeing your sense of humor. Made me laugh!
I have watched your videos and subscribed today based on your honest feedback. This problem you had is one we all have and it really is about managing expectations. That is why stickers are great because it stops a perfectionist (me) going crazy and potentially doing damage.
Without repeating yourself the video would be 2 min
Seemed more fuss then it was worth.
You’ve come along way from
“T” town. Much love for ya. I’m really impressed. Watch all your vids. 11 strong even with one in our hearts and memories. Really enjoyed that presidential plane!
I love your videos Larry! I appreciate how you explain so much and so clearly the processes, regardless of how small or large the job you're doing. Thank you!

oh wow, you can repaint for 30$? where
it costs 30$ for the sticker.. Thats what he ment.
Why not just use a spraycan and blend it in? Would be the best solution for the money.
Ill do it in 20minutes because I have a trainee mixing paint.
i can repaint hole car for less than 100$

I loved the comment about “Just selling the Car”....I know exactly what that frustration feels like!!! That was so funny!!
Now another comment:
You should gather up the names of all the people who will let you sleep on their couch WHEN the “little woman” shows you the door! I loved her comment “you have issues”...actually due to my OCD on cleaning and fixing stuff....I think I have issues too!! That too was funny!
Enjoy your video and you have inspired me to go and work on my “not so bad bumper” on my car (I wrote it off as a “OH WELL” because I didn’t know about all these options) THANK YOU!!
Mettalic Silver is a nightmare! I’ve been trying to come up with a process and using my car as a test panel. The flakes just do not lay down to same way and can easily be picked up in sunlight. The easiest fix I found so far is from Dr. Colorchip. I’ll keep at it though! Nice video. 👍🏻
ganymedeIV4 Yes, I thought about buying one just to get the flakes to try and mimic how it’s put down at the factory. I’m kind of excited to try it out! Thank you for the reply.
great idea to put two pieces meeting along the ridge line ... your meticulous presentations are very methodical and inspiring, thanx so much ... unfortunately mine needs to be filled and painted so doing research at you tube university!
Man you're crazy! Love how you tested different methods before settling but by far the easiest way to fix that "Dent" Would have been to heat up the area from the inside with your heat gun and push it out with you fingers and use a flat blade to shape the body line while keeping it hot. I've done this on a lot of bumpers with great success. Keep up the good work sir!
The Camera quality on your video is amazing keep up the great work
This man turned a one hour job that’s quick and easy into 7 to 8 hours of a nightmare
Not sure why there are so many dislikes. This is a great video, and I love your honesty with your frustration in the narration. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for putting this video up, because I'm sure it was super frustrating, and the struggling through it is the most valuable part, really.
man, your persistence and attention (obsession) to detail is absolutely incredible and world class...salute.
Your frustration and time spent is greatly appreciated
thank you
I love that you are an absolute fanatic about what you do. I just got a car with nice paint and look forward to using your videos to help me protect it.
I've not used the wrap on scuffs or dings... but I did use a similar product to redo some striping on the side of my old, no ancient, caravan/trailer I was tidying up to sell... it looked pretty good when I had finished.
spent hours upon hours trying to touch up a metallic 5 series ... impossible! ... this is a much better solution for an everyday get around vehicle... thanks!
You are fun to watch.. very cool ... I will be purchasing the stickers...Great tutorial for DIY !!!
Thanks for the tip. I’ve been looking for a solution to fix a scratch on a front and back bumpers good thing that they’re not on the lining so no 7-8 hours for those.
I have a Honda Civic with metallic paint and a similar situation. Just want to thank you!! you save me a lot of time. I will level it out my best then order the sticker LOL you're the man. Thanks
Hi Larry, to prevent an uneven surface like the one with the first sticker, use a sanding block or a piece of wood like the pallets for stiring paint when you sand the putty, this also helps to featheredge the putty to the paint keeping it even
This is the Larry equivalent of a raving review, we all know how “crazy” you are, so good enough for you is really quite a complement on the product
This is a great product! The color match stickers covers much better that touch up paint. They matched the white diamond color on my Escalade perfectly. It does what I consider to be a 10 foot touch up repair. Looks really good from 10 feet away. Thanks for a really good touch up product!
No way in a million years I could have seen YOU giving a thumbs up to a sticker. LOVE IT!
Hello Larry, thanks for the great video as always. Been subscribing since 2015. Btw if you plan to do another video on chip/scratch touch-ups, I hope you can expriment using mini electric airbrush instead. They're relatively cheap online and usually used for Tamiyas or art projects. IMHO in theory they will work as the paint applied will be thin, and look seamless as long as the putty doesn't shrink. I've bought the machine but have yet to find the time to try it. Maybe you can beat me to it and do us a big favor. Regards from a small country called Malaysia :)
Wow, 7 - 8 HOURS to get it right for your video! That's dedication, man. Good job!
Thank you so much for an honest video of how difficult this can be, and the truth about the end result. You have saved me a lot of time and frustration. Failure is often a better teacher than success.
Awesome video Larry! My car thanks you for all that I've learned from your videos.
Another great video Larry.. you have my sympathy with this one, I'm sure we've all been there when a 'twenty minute job' ends up taking about eight hours and almost your sanity!.. especially as you're clearly a perfectionist too!
Hi Larry.. great video, and sorry for your frustration, I get it :)
An idea, why not use bondo to get the shape line, and then use a small air sprayer with paint, instead of brush which just blobs the paint? Do you think that would work better?
Wonder how the sticker would hold up during washing or in the winter in colder climates...Love your channel by the way..
Great Video! Thanks for taking the time to inform us!
Great video! Hugely important to show frustration in projects is completely normal.
