Hi Ian I got a copyright claim on an old video on an old channel that consisted of tons of movie clips for a top ten list like watchmojo.com. Than I got a copyright claim from Fox for using a clip without permission and they took my video down. Thankfully I didn’t get a strike. I now know that for use of movie clips you need permission thanks to your video of course😀👋. I will most likely never do stuff movie related again but if I ever do I know now what to do if I want to use a movie clip.
Also Ian you can also check a music’s usage policy on RUclips’s music policies section yes it’s not just for covers of songs it’s also for usage of that song too
Ian Corzine I used copyrighted country music because I wanted to post country music and I got too many copyright strikes and I got my channel terminated
I recently received a copyright claim against a video of a local Middle School Class trip to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. As part of the Laying Of The Wreath Ceremony, Taps was played for nearly a minute. I recieved a Copyright Claim for "A Hero's Return" I disputed the claim for two reasons: 1) Taps is in the Public Domain. 2) Incidental Use/Fair use since Taps is a tradition at Military Funerals and Ceremonies of rememberance. Since the video was of a public Ceremony of Military Nature, using music traditionally associated such a ceremony, at minimum it was Fair Use. Although I was originally notified the dispute would take 30 days to resolve, the claim was removed in 3 days.
HA!! You would not believe how many people can't seem to understand that simple statement. They keep trying to find ways around it and then they complain when they get a claim or a strike. 👊😁 Thanks for watching.
Not using copyright music and still have 2 of my videos demonotised all proceeds going to some other dudes channel that has nothing to do with the music. Me: genius
I have a video blocked on my channel for a song I wrote, sang and played on in 1995. The song hasn't even been available for purchase for the last 20 years but is owned by a record company...
To be making loads of cash by the copyright protected materials that belong to others, RUclips is surely as hipocritical as they can become. Are there other video channels where you are not an corporate entity to be used to get as much money as possible, while giving as little of what you deserve as they can?
@@iancorzine If I can take a wild guess at this one. Did he get 'dinked' b/c the music is still (technically) owned by a record company? If I had to further guess permission would have to be sought from the record owning / holding label (company) before he can use his own work, again. Am I close or way off, on this one?
I watched this and was expecting ways to use tracks without getting copyrighted. Not "don't use copyrighted tracks at all". Let me give you people some real tips. Speed up the track by %5. Or slow it down. It will throw off youtube's copyright detection. If not, make sure not to use more than 10 to 15 seconds of the normal track. If you think it's a lesser known one, you could even get away with 30 seconds. But if you're using popular music, it's better to stay safe with 10. Usually changing the speed or the pitch or both does the trick.
yeah and if your channel ever blows up that is when the copyright claims and strikes will come real smart or you will owe millions from lawsuit because you have already been making money, just because you upload and it gets past the content id doesn't mean you are safe from being sued by copyright owner if they find out
@@Hejzizzjzjz i would listen to what ian corzine says and not people in the comments or anywhere else on the internet tom scott just released a amazing video on copyright detailing just how bad it can get for creators breaking copyright laws, do fair use to a tee as much as possible is your best bet
Just try not to use new or popular music i.e. rap or hiphop. I could put probably 15 seconds of an unedited Led Zeppelin track, but using 2 seconds of a distorted and bass boosted X gon give it to ya will get claimed immediately.
@@JimothyRoss i have been having success getting past content id system that isn't the issue i would like to ensure that if my channel does grow none of the artists i am promoting on my channel will have a claim to my work if they became aware of it in the future so i would like to stick to fair use doctrine as much as possible, thanks for the response though, I showcase music from all time periods on my channel no new mainstream music and have been sticking to 2- 5 seconds of lyrics and commenting after playing lyrics each time
In my techniques to avoid a copyright claim... All you had to do is to find your song to use Then screen record the video and make sure to playback speed either 1.5x 1.25x etc... then you realise there is no restriction ^^
Expectations: Music is a form of art that has no boundaries and connects people. Reality: Why am I copyright strikes for a song that's not even in my video? Reality is often times disappointing.
I had the same problems with MusicLoops and the thieves at AdRev claiming copyright to those tracks when I bought a licence to use the tracks. I disputed it and filed a complaint against AdRev for stealing revenue and at first they dropped the claims but a year later. They did it again, so I cut my losses, removed the videos they were leeching from and reuploaded them with NCS music. No problems at all and its the same when I use the RUclips issued music. No problems there either. I would just steer clear of MusicLoops and iMovie and use NCS and RUclips, It saves a lot of hassle.
It's so sad laws make us feel morally Grey just to listen to our songs while we stream or make RUclips videos. Thanks so much for all the info you gave, it helps a lot for sure, just wish it wasn't such a chore. Liked and subbed
I recently had a copyright strike for a Creative Commons song and included attribution as requested and I was still hit, was listed as a non copyright song too
Ian Corzine, I don’t believe so but I’m not 100%, the song was available as an offer to non copyrighted music for use in videos on RUclips, maybe they changed their minds, it was allowed to remain, but I still switched it out for one of the tracks RUclips offers, this happened yesterday so I haven’t had proper time to contact the company who is offering the track as non copyright, I will check though
@@ZaneProductionzGamez Licences can change and MusicLoops is the one to avoid. I bought legitimate music licences to use tracks and monetise the videos but that didn't stop AdRev from stealing money from my videos but I have and always will fight back. As soon as I got the alert. I set the video to "private" and then I deleted and replaced the music with some from NCS and that fixed the problem. Unlike Ian here. I am not a lawyer but I follow my gut and I always triple check to make sure that the music I wish to use is permitted to be used on RUclips (NCS has a very clear policy on usage) and that I can still legally monetise the video I have made. NCS is very supportive to video creators and I hope that Ian will cover their music in a future video as this will be helpful to video creators in the future. The RUclips Music library is another safe choice as well.
Transport & Simulation Hub yeah I ran into many issues with music, I had abandoned my channel, and a couple months later started a new channel to post my music, and decided to try doing reactions with music, and many videos I discovered searching RUclips, I learned real quick about content ID system, when I make comedy reaction videos or telling stories I will use NCS, I had heard of it before but never looked into it, so thanks for the info, I was just monetized recently, been waiting since February, and my channel grew even more during that time, I did a cover that I paid for proper licenses and it was hit with content ID system, I had forgotten about it, and a friend told me I shouldn’t fight it cause I would loose and get a possible strike, after I was monetized I felt it was worth the risk since I live stream on a backup channel too, last week I checked my email to find it was removed, I’m still getting views so it was worth it, I just hope it won’t get hit again, thanks for the info, it’s great help!
@@zaneproductionzgamez3244 No problem and I am happy to learn that my information is helpful. As for the strike, they only last for 6 months before they expire. From experience, I only use music from trusted sources like NCS because they are the publisher of the tracks and not some middle man unlike MusicLoops. I learned from that experience is to never ever pay for a licence to use music and to look into great alternatives that give clear instructions and take a screenshot or download the usage policy and print it off just incase there is ever a problem. I lost out over $360 in licence fees for multiple tracks only to have leeches like AdRev come along, misuse the Content ID system and steal revenue from my channel. Lucky for them, I am not a big channel because I would have summoned them to Belfast court and sued for them for false copyright claims. I am more aware about the copyright laws now than I was back then. So I will likely challenge them in the future if they try anything and I am not afraid to dispute their claims now I know my rights :). All the best.
Please cover “mashups” too. I just started a channel and got copyright claims on the first videos I uploaded ... I was going to contest but stopped at the point when it said “make sure you have a lawyer before clicking Next”.. how do I contest without removing the clips? Thanks for your videos!
Hey COUB! Well, thanks for watching them! Ok, yeah, that's the plan -- remixes and mashups. Now, did you get copyright claims or copyright strikes? It sounds like a takedown notice was filed against you??
@@iancorzine Thanks for taking the time to reply. I went back inside my channel, after a break of almost 2 months, and only one video had a copyright claim "Video cannot be monetized", which, thanks to your video, I then proceeded to dispute. This time there was no warning about lawyers. I chose "Remix or mashup" in the "Type of fair use" section, entered my example of why I thought it is fair use, and hit SUBMIT.. I'll come back with an update when something happens!.. I make instrumentals/piano covers for anime songs and get copyright claimed very often. I was a little frustrated at first, but now that I think about it I'm just making these covers for fun due to quarantine, so I'm not really bothered by it anymore :D
Please can you speak about copyright claims being made against videos containing licensed songs and why this is happening and how to stop it? We cannot see the point of paying and then still having to run around proving ourselves and getting our ad money tied up. We only use licensed music (mainly Envato) and have been inundated with copyright claims the past few weeks. We have sent licenses in every time and complained multiple times. Sometimes they even refuse the claim after seeing the license.
I have an ongoing claim for music on a video that doesn't even have music. The claim is clearly either a mistake or intentionally false. My initial dispute was denied and now I'm awaiting the result of an appeal but face the risk of a strike by trying not to let someone claim my work as their own.
The same thing just happened to me. There is NO MUSIC in my video. It's just the sound of wind, yet there's a copyright claim for 3 SONGS! Impossible to contact RUclips since the dispute claim options do not apply to my situation. So frustrating.
I uploaded a royalty free track with a permission from the artists himself. I even made a copyright statement in my description and gave proper crediting of the artist with his socials. But "VISO Music" claimed it even tho they don't own the audio and blocked it worldwide . I disputed the claim but it got rejected. Many RUclipsrs are getting unecessary claims from VISO music. Please Help.

Yes, as I mentioned in a prior video, I have two copyright claims against two of my videos. John Williams’ Star Wars main theme, and the theme from Stranger Things. I discovered the RUclips audio library AFTER the fact. However, I feel like I just NEED the Stranger Things theme song for the particular video, so I’m ok with it.
Hey Stormey! Thanks for watching! You must remember that even if you use RUclips "Music Policies" music, you likely will still get a Copyright Claim -- that's because for much of this RUclips music list, RUclips has agreements with the artists to share or take all your revenue.
Ian Corzine - yes, and I am ok with them taking $ from me for these two particular videos of mine. I’m so small and starting out, I look at the two videos as loss leaders for me. Let’s see if I feel this way down the road when these videos pull in revenue...I’ll probably be singing a different tune.
Hi Ian. I used short gifs of monster jam trucks with a song i bought from AudioJungle. Am I okay with using the gifs and the song? I transformed the monster truck clips by using them to teach kids their colors.
RUclips is automatically filing copyright claims seconds after I upload a vid WITH LICENSED MUSIC. I don't want RUclips's audio library. I license from another company. I always prevail, because I have to spend the time to dig up the url / web address, so they see there are OTHER recordings, which are LEGAL. ANY way to stop RUclips from dinging EVERY version of one composition, even though a different recording. I am so mad!!
I’m on the music side - learning piano and viola so charting the learning journey without playing anything is rather dry. If I were monetized (I’m not) I don’t mind if the artist picks up the revenue if I play their music. In many recent cases I’m promoting their music books as great learning material. Some of my videos might be ‘transformation’ but some are covers. I’m in dodgy waters either way, I can feel it! Yes I’ve had strikes but no vids taken down.
Kathryn is Learning to SIGHT READ piano well, thank you for all the educational value you provide. Yeah, this is a risky area. Make sure you comment or critique on the pieces of music you use.
Why are there dozens and dozens of channels uploading ENTIRE ALBUMS of copyrighted music without getting touched, but sometimes even just a partial segment of ONE SONG can be instantly flagged on RUclips? I just want a straight answer to this question please???
Or have your son mess around with garage band and come up with tracks for your videos. Until he becomes a celebrity I do not have to worry about copyright claims, right?. Thank you for another great video MA 😊
I just wanna use music for background music. But when I upload, YT is like, "COpYrIGhT cLaIM" and I'm sittin in bed like... -_- I JUST WANNA USE MUSIC ;-;
You must have permission to use whatever music you are using. It doesn't matter if its for background or not, you must always have permission. I have several other videos that may provide you the information you need. Search them out and then let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching. 👊😁
That's not RUclips. Click the dispute button or the remove song button and see where it takes you. I bet it's a hacker and I've been talking back and forth with RUclips and even uploaded a recording of it on my channel. Let's sub to each other's channels so we can stay connected and get this ass hole thrown in jail.
@@off-gridhillbillystyle3735 hey buddy i tried to click on of the options and gives me name like audio and anti copyright are these also showed in you?
@@kyuppiofficial1757 yes these are the 2 channels. You'll need to get a screenshot of both also copy the URL on both channels and send them to RUclips then you have to keep calling and sending emails to them . Took me about 2 months before I finally got mine taken care of.
I was at a bachelor party doing some filming and Rihanna was playing in the background very clearly. Is this a situation where I am most definitely getting a copyright claim? I decided to delete it anyway, but I really liked the clip because of the funny banter going on between friends.
Well, it didn’t used to be but more and more my clients are reporting copyright claims on copyrighted background music. So, you made the correct decision - it’s so hard to get good footage uploaded these days!
You are so right!! And I wish I knew the answer. All I can figure is that they have received copyright claims and the creator will not receive any revenue from that particular video. That is the only way YT can allow a video with unauthorized material to stay up. Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any other questions. 👊😀
@@iancorzine Please elaborate. Surely there's a more definitive reply to the question of why "every song ever recorded" is already on RUclips, in many cases dozens of copies of the same song taken straight from vinyl or CDs. As pretty much all of that material is copyrighted, and has not been transformed, why weren't those uploaders stopped? Why some but not others? Is it because they did it before a certain date? Or because they add some particular disclaimer under their video? I see dozens of differently worded disclaimers, invoking this or that immunity from infringement charges -- fair use, educational use, on and on. Are ANY of these disclaimers valid? If revenue is the decisive factor, how do you tell RUclips that you don't want to make money from your videos, which in my case would be new compilations of songs, playlists? I'd be posting entirely out of appreciation for the artists and songs, the way a radio show selects songs for a playlist.
@@issadad Its because the record company or the publisher decides what action needs to be taken. I'm here because I create guitar tutorials, I'm happy for youtube to syphons the revenue to the publisher when I use copywriter material, but today I did a tutorial for a Jimi hendrix song that youtube just blocked at the request of the publisher! Whats the point of that? Sure, take the money, but don't block it! The song is 50 years old! Anyway, the point us, each song has different publishing rights. Many songs will allow you to upload but any money goes to the publisher.
Slightly different OFF-TOPIC Q: If an artist wishes to allow a creator to use one of their painted, drawn, sketched, poster, print, or muraled artwork on, our channel what type of 'shield or barrier' protects the artists work from non-consent by others? It doesn't fit the description of a video. It's not using music or sound. So, where and how would you categorize art on paper, fabric, or canvas?
This is a good rundown, though, admittedly, I was hoping you were going to discuss more info regarding music covers/remixes and those gray areas. RUclips and major labels employ overly-aggressive (albeit understandably so) algorithms and flag far too many false positives. Pretty sure Universal doesn't own the rights to a song that was likely written in Iran. Even then, for every day users, finding the proper rights owners of a property can be rather difficult to locate. Anyways, thanks for the tips and hope you have a good day.
Okay Ian, I'm a self taught guitarist with ZERO knowledge of musical reading, writing, structure, theory or composition and lets say I record a song myself to use in my videos but it kinda sounds like something that has already been made ( think SKA), but it was all me from the root-up.What does a homie do then? Keep it up man, you're the only likable lawyer I've known to exist!
"only likable lawyer" that is funny!! 🤣🤣🤣 If I were you I would post it on YT with attribution to yourself and see what YT does. if they give you a strike, then contest it. There are hackers who who are claiming copyrights to everything but you should be able to contest that as well. RUclips wants to be all about original art and that is what you are providing. Go ahead and dive in!! Let me know how it goes. 👊😁
~Incredibly helpful video! I've always used music from the free RUclips Audio Library on my poetry & performance art channel. Kevin Macleod's variety of genres is phenomenal for RUclips creators☺
Hey Ian, thank you for this video... It was so much helpful for me... You are probably the best teacher of RUclips law! 😊 I've been watching your videos recently and also enjoying it.. ✌️
But Ian, I have a question which is bothering me, I'm going to upload a video on a list of Top songs and for that I'm gonna use short clips of some popular songs that are approximately 15 seconds long... And for each clip I'll add my opinions about the song or how good the song or the music is... And probably describe about the song a bit... Will this be considered as a fair use Ian? Or will it be risky? Please let me know by replying, I'll be big help for me... 😊✌️
The Unfixed Well, it is always risky to use copyrighted music in your RUclips video. However, if you truly use very short clips and you comment directly on the clips, fair use should be there to protect you. But warning fair use is not full proof so use it sparingly.
Thank you for your video sir. Seriously, I uploaded a video yesterday, and then after a while i got a message from youtube that says “ A copyright owner using Content ID claimed some material in your video. This is not a copyright strike. This claim does not affect your account status. There are either ads running on your video, with the revenue going to the copyright owner, or the copyright owner is receiving stats about your video’s views.” That was so annoying. So I decided to deleted my video. Am i wrong sir deleting my new upload video? Im so worried because all of my videos are a garageband cover songs. Please help🥺
Hey Katrina -- sorry to hear about the claim. Were you right to delete the video? It just depends. I have kept some of my videos with claims because I am not really concerned about the ad revenue -- I just want to help Creators. However, if you really want a copyright claim clear channel, then you were right to delete the video.
I've been wondering about acoustic finger style guitar arrangements of popular songs. Months ago I set up a channel, bought a nice camera/mic. Then just thought It might end up being a total boondoggle if stuff is getting flagged left and right.
Hey David -- yeah, especially in light of Article 13 and mega Content Filters on the rise, covers are a dangerous business on RUclips now. I would focus on songs in the "Music Policies" section of the Creator Studio and understand that you are giving up your right to revenue.
@@iancorzine thank you for helping me out Ian! I can work with that, I'm thinking possibly affiliate links, and or patreon. That sort of thing for any side money, but at least not getting kiboshed and let me have my fun! Again, a big thanks!
Wow!! Thank you so much for watching AND for commenting. I have several other videos that teach more about Fair Use and copyright matters. Check them out if you are interested. Glad to have you on board AND thanks for watching. Please let me know if you ever have any questions. 👊😀
i downloaded a song from music composer: Joakim Karud (for my outro music) and RUclips blocked it in one country. i'm sad now because i don't know what country it was blocked in ;-;
LOL! YES, the DI Crew was copyrighted the first time it was sung so long ago. You would have to get the permission of the original creator S&D to use that in your video!
I'm currently using non-copyrighted music and i've checked them all personally all of them being safe and i have to now deal with believe music claiming music they of course like always don't own.
another way is to preupload the track you want to use in a video to see if it passes or not. If it doesn't, try finding a good cover version. They hardly ever get affected.
Hi Ian! Love your new video. I've never been given a copyright claim. Knock on wood! I'm hoping it never happens to me. Thanks for all your super awesome tips!
@@iancorzine well my intro is from a royalty free site that allows you to use their music as long as you site them (which I do in my intro). The problem I had is from some video games that have music/sounds in them that is copyrighted! but in the end its only a very small amount so I am ok with that.
But what if in the Description *of* the original Clip *of* the original Author you can see following words: " _it's free to animate_ " does that mean that I can use the following music in an Animation? (By the way, this is an undercover account, I'm just too lazy to change the account)
Yea!! That is so good to hear. A lot of creators have mentioned Vimeo and Bitchute!! We all just need to choose one place and congregate there. Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience. 👊😀
@@iancorzine There's no denying that ultra-draconian measures to block videos based on copyright will only push users to other emerging services. For example, one of my unlisted family videos was blocked because someone had the radio on at the beach! Ridiculous. With decentralised video services getting more mature like dTube, where no one can censor your videos, this is going to be the star attraction in the future. The downside, however, is that you can't remove your own videos! Ouch
Great video Ian. Thank you for the helpful information. My daughters have launched their YT channels and I know they use music on their videos. I will share your video with them 😊
Hey Ian. I was recently claimed 3 times, 2 times by UMG, the other by EMPIRE, the songs included were Juice WRLD - All Girls are the Same, Empty and XXXTentacion - Jocelyn Flores. Apparently one more and I get stroked, which I do not want. How do I fix this, or is there a way I can remove the video and be safe. I will refuse to make alterations to the video not including it going to private as the whole video has the music in it. Can you please tell me what I can do and if I can still use this music please? Thank you.
Just came across this video, my video falls under fair use as I not only make reaction videos and pauses every few seconds but I also give vocal analysis about the singer I am reacting to in the video but still I get copyright claims and they get all the revenue, I have been getting more now that my channel is getting more recognition and views and subs. what you said at 6:40 is pretty much what I am doing here, I teach and educate people about what notoes the artist is singing, how they are doing certain things with their voices, what musical chords are being played and what, etc etc What can I do for this issue? Thanks Ian!
I used sundown (prod.Siin) and I used it as long I include the vid in the description. Then I got claimed by a guy Named (Roosevelt) and his (Surrender) like DaFuQ?
Thanks for uploading your video it was very helpful. The issue I have with my copyright claims happen when music is playing in the background when having a drink or meal in bar/restaurant, so I don’t use the music intentionally. It’s very frustrating if you’re taking a video while on holiday for example and you’re trying to show what the resort is like for nightlife and entertainment
I don't know how to respond?? 😁 A lot of creators have asked the same question AND I think in the end that will happen. YT has changed so much that creators are getting tired of rules and guidelines that limit their creativity. We just need another platform and then it just might happen. Thanks for watching!! 👊😁
the only thing we could do if we had a team is to CREATE our own stream base thats solid. you create your own type of youtube thats the only way. RUclips is popular if not twitch so it is what it is. they dont care. they make their money off of movies and shows too. when they were small nobodies everything was fine and fun
If it is just a map and you are going to refer to it your video the you should be okay. You may want to get creative and change it up a bit so you fulfill the transformation part of Fair Use. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching and for reaching out. BTW: Make sure you credit where you got the map from too 👊😀
Hi! I hope you can help me out with this: I want to use a BY-NC-ND 4.0 music in a tech video (so something different from the music itself) as a background music with me talking on top of it, can I do it? I have to specify that the video is NOT monetized or sponsored and so I don't make any money from it and I will also attribute in the description. Thanks!!
I keep getting copyright claims on my NES playthroughs from people who have done heavy metal covers of the music from the game. I dispute all of them and they are normally dropped pretty quickly, but the last one actually denied my dispute because they felt it was still valid (even though it’s very clear that I had not used the claimant’s music). I’ve resubmitted my dispute but now I’m at risk of actually getting a copyright strike if they deny it again. RUclips doesn’t provide an option in their dispute forms for a scenario when the copyright claim was triggered incorrectly.
Actually at this point EVERY royalty free music company I have used on my youtube channel has resulted in me being nailed with copyright issues. I am now so paranoid I figure its a matter of time before even music from the youtube music library is going to get hit. My solution: Drop music altogether... just use ambient sounds from outdoors. I AM DONE music wont be happening on my channel. When I legally pay for tracks, which I always do, or follow the rules by giving credit for the free music JUST AS THE MUSIC COMPANY SAID I SHOULD and still get nailed... I don't play that game anymore. DONE...
I got a copyright claim in one of my original songs, I created the song from scratch and I have proof, so why is someone trying to steal my songs? What can I do?
This is exactly what I'm talking about mate! I've used lots of songs from different artists no problem, then 1 out of the blue says NO! At the moment, I'm disputing Ed Sheeran song, but it's OK for me to use legend David Bowie songs! Like what???
This is what you do... If you haven't already, make a completely original film immediately and publish it for the world to see and know when you did it. For greater success make multiple films, or make the one film "special" by examining the following... For there is an oddity concerning the nature of reality called "audio visual synchronicity", but mainstream science ignores it so they will never be able to prove that it is a natural thing that always happens. Full music albums, most of the lyrics, musical moods, themes, specific sounds, the timing, virtually every single part will synchronise with certain films PRECISELY in a way which is very clearly far beyond what could possibly happen by chance. Thus if you want to use any music that was published AFTER you published your film(s) and they try to claim copyright, there is a good chance their entire album will synchronise precisely with your film, and you can then claim it was ENTIRELY derived moment for moment from your film. And the probability of all these coincidences happening by chance will be too astronomical to be accepted by any court, so they will have no choice but to rule that their music is actually more yours than theirs, and you should be getting the majority of the profits from it instead of them!
Example: "So just a few seconds after the last obvious plagiarism at the PRECISE MOMENT in the film that the person presses the doorbell, you just happened to play music that resembles a doorbell, eh? And that was your idea, not mine? And then when the person opens the door and greets them you sing the lyrics, 'You called and I answered.' Another coincidence, eh? Was ANYTHING your own work or did you just entirely copy mine?"
I'm a small music channel that does violin covers and gets copyright claimed 90% of the time, but what bothers me is how other music cover channels don't get copyright claims while I do. Do they know something I don't? My videos are in two main types: 1. I play the violin over background music, which the background music gets copyright claimed; and 2. I do a split-screen violin cover arranged by myself and do not use any part of the official music, which still gets "composition claimed". It would be understandable but I see other music channels doing the same type of covers for the same song and not get copyright claimed. How do I dodge the copyright claim like they did?
I make karaoke tracks for people to sing along. I do not take music from the original song. I play the music with my keyboard and incorporate my own imagination. Still I get copyright claims. I still fail to understand how is this an unfair use.
You are not alone.. However, you need to make sure that the music is 100% your creation. It cannot be music you got from iTunes or some place like that. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. 🎃👻
Could you get copyright claimed for rewriting the lyrics of a song but keeping everything else the same? Seems half and half on the whole "Transformation" rule. Would like to know because in the future I was thinking about starting a music channel.
Hey Caleb! Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, you would be violating the copyright to the performance, melody, and musical composition if you did that. You could go into the "Music Policies" section of RUclips's Creator's Studio and find a popular song that RUclips allows on the platform and do what you described. However, you would have to give up revenue from the video.
@@iancorzine Could you ever make a video demonstrating how to get copyright and licensing for songs and content and another video for what the difference between copyright and licensing are? I can't find an article or video actually demonstrating either of those and feel they are very important distinctions I don't know about. Thanks, you're awesome
I'm just live streaming me and some friends working on a car, radio in the background. RUclips tossed 6 copywrite claims at me almost instantly. It's ridiculous. The music is not being used for personal or monetary gain and is not a vital part of the video.
Hello Ian thank You for Your clip. However could You please answer me below questions? 1) You said that You can use the music that is license to You. That we can use audio jungle or others and we can use those websites that we can obtain royalty free songs and incorporate them later in our RUclips videos and don't get any copyright claims. Considering above. If I obtain such music. Do I need to mention about it in the description on the movie? And If mention/give credit to someone else doesn't it mean that I cannot monetize the video as I ve given the credit to someone else? 2) If you use YT audio library music/sound effects to my video do I need to provide that information in the description of the video? That I ve used those sounds from that library or I don't have to mention about it at all? 3) What's the difference between creative commons and other websites that You ve mentioned that offer royalty free music? Why You make a distinction between other websites offering royalty free music and creative commons website. All of them they provide royalty free music right? 4) At 3:10 You say that the only requirement is that I need to give attribution(credit) to the artist in the description video. Again, but doesn't it mean that if i give attribution I won't be able to monetize the video? 5) If You have the license to use the music, do You have to mention about that license in the description of the video or not? In Your description of the video You wrote sth like that : Written Permission to Use “Ham Sandwich” by the Liars Club at 1:14 of this video was secured by this Creator on June 12, 2018. Proof of license available upon request. So You write the attribution, but You don't mention about the license yes, only that You have it? Basically if I did sth like that with my video that I would give attribution to the artist I can still get copyright strike from RUclips yes? But the moment I will show them the license that copyright strike will be removed? How does it work? 6) You said if You use local bands music in our videos we have to attribute(give credit) to them in our videos. Again wouldn't it mean that I won't be able to monetize my video if I give attribution(credit) to someone else? 7) Fair use... i get it :-) You ve explained everything thoroughly. Thank You in advance for taking Your time to answer them.
HEY RUclips CREATORS! Has RUclips ever given you a ❌COPYRIGHT CLAIM❌? Tell me about the situation ...
I recieved a Copyright Claim for "A Hero's Return"
I disputed the claim for two reasons:
1) Taps is in the Public Domain.

I have a video blocked on my channel for a song I wrote, sang and played on in 1995. The song hasn't even been available for purchase for the last 20 years but is owned by a record company...
Are you kidding?? Man, that’s a bummer! I probably know the answer to this question, but did you dispute the claim?
Sonny Greenwich Jr oh this would freakin happen.
@@iancorzine I haven't disputed it because they do own at least half the rights, I have been trying to get in touch through twitter to no avail yet...

Thank you very much for this useful comment! The video was indeed not helpful lol
yeah and if your channel ever blows up that is when the copyright claims and strikes will come real smart or you will owe millions from lawsuit because you have already been making money, just because you upload and it gets past the content id doesn't mean you are safe from being sued by copyright owner if they find out
@@Hejzizzjzjz i would listen to what ian corzine says and not people in the comments or anywhere else on the internet tom scott just released a amazing video on copyright detailing just how bad it can get for creators breaking copyright laws, do fair use to a tee as much as possible is your best bet
All you had to do is to find your song to use
Then screen record the video and make sure to playback speed either 1.5x 1.25x etc... then you realise there is no restriction ^^
Do you have to put the artist into the description right? Im planning to use this idea too.

Hey Midwest Man! Thanks so much for watching! What kinds of videos do you make?
Ian Corzine some reviews and some hanging out with my dog haha. Still trying to figure out what direction I want to go 🤣🤣
I just got a copyright claim in my most recent video. I got the music from iMovie. I thought iMovie music was copyright free so I’m confused.

I recently had a copyright strike for a Creative Commons song and included attribution as requested and I was still hit, was listed as a non copyright song too
Hey Zane. Really??? Maybe it was a situation where the guy did not actually own all the rights to the song and just labeled it "CC"?

I was confused What is Copyright claim
How come just about every song ever recorded is already on you tube? Are they there illegally? Thousands if not millions of every record known to man!
I search up non copyrighted aesthetic songs, give credit and then still get copyrighted!
I use remixes or slowed and reverb versions now
How do u get the licence please tell me
Slightly different OFF-TOPIC Q: If an artist wishes to allow a creator to use one of their painted, drawn, sketched, poster, print, or muraled artwork on, our channel what type of 'shield or barrier' protects the artists work from non-consent by others?
But Ian, I have a question which is bothering me, I'm going to upload a video on a list of Top songs and for that I'm gonna use short clips of some popular songs that are approximately 15 seconds long... And for each clip I'll add my opinions about the song or how good the song or the music is... And probably describe about the song a bit... Will this be considered as a fair use Ian? Or will it be risky? Please let me know by replying, I'll be big help for me... 😊✌️

Thank you so much for saying that. It makes me feel good to know that I’m helping Creators out there!
The Unfixed Well, it is always risky to use copyrighted music in your RUclips video. However, if you truly use very short clips and you comment directly on the clips, fair use should be there to protect you. But warning fair use is not full proof so use it sparingly.
Bruh... I did NOT notice the 'Audio Library' thing, this is very, very very helpful! Thank you.
Thank you for your video sir. Seriously, I uploaded a video yesterday, and then after a while i got a message from youtube that says “ A copyright owner using Content ID claimed some material in your video.

Hi Ian! Love your new video. I've never been given a copyright claim. Knock on wood! I'm hoping it never happens to me. Thanks for all your super awesome tips!
Hey Heather! Really??? That is rare -- yes, keep doing what you are doing because it is working!
Excellent summary! Hope you had a great Memorial Day!
Hey Gene! Thanks! Yes, I did -- took some time off -- How about you?
I did. Needed to solve a web site issue but elected to work outside on my “honey-do” list :)
@@genehobbs1825 Nice! Probably was VERY necessary ...
I get to keep breathing. Might not have had that outcome if I had ignored the list :)
Great tips! I have been given copyright claims on some of my video game videos due to the soundtrack.
Hey Brian! Thanks for watching! Your intro soundtrack or various sound tracks on your videos?
@@iancorzine well my intro is from a royalty free site that allows you to use their music as long as you site them (which I do in my intro). The problem I had is from some video games that have music/sounds in them that is copyrighted! but in the end its only a very small amount so I am ok with that.
But what if in the Description *of* the original Clip *of* the original Author you can see following words: " _it's free to animate_ " does that mean that I can use the following music in an Animation? (By the way, this is an undercover account, I'm just too lazy to change the account)
I moved a lot of stuff to Vimeo. You have to pay a little per month, but, hell, it's miles better than RUclips!
I will share your video with them 😊
Hey Dal! I am so glad to hear that! This is the GOLDEN AGE of RUclips -- yes, and if they ever have questions, you know where to find me!
Very informative 🙏, I downloaded almost 20 songs already in RUclips library and using them to my videos. So amazing. 🙏🙏🙏👌👌
Thank you.
WilliamPlays ikr, the XXXTentacion -Jocelyn Flores! That gave me a copyright claim! I just deleted that song 😒
I mean video
@@cancxlled9385 so annoying ikr
Just came across this video, my video falls under fair use as I not only make reaction videos and pauses every few seconds but I also give vocal analysis about the singer I am reacting to in the video but still I get copyright claims and they get all the revenue, I have been getting more now that my channel is getting more recognition and views and subs.
what you said at 6:40 is pretty much what I am doing here, I teach and educate people about what notoes the artist is singing, how they are doing certain things with their voices, what musical chords are being played and what, etc etc
What can I do for this issue?
Can’t we boycott RUclips and all of our lives will be a trillion times better
I don't know how to respond?? 😁 A lot of creators have asked the same question AND I think in the end that will happen. YT has changed so much that creators are getting tired of rules and guidelines that limit their creativity. We just need another platform and then it just might happen. Thanks for watching!! 👊😁
the only thing we could do if we had a team is to CREATE our own stream base thats solid. you create your own type of youtube thats the only way. RUclips is popular if not twitch so it is what it is. they dont care. they make their money off of movies and shows too. when they were small nobodies everything was fine and fun
@@iancorzine which other platform would u recommend for videos with no restriction to copyrighted music?
He gives me a strong Jason Bateman vibe. Thanks for the advice!
I need to know if i can use Washington On Your Side from Hamilton for a map i want to start oof.
Thanks!!
Thanks so much dude!
You are most welcome!! Thank you for watching. 👊😁👀
i kept using musics from a channel that i idolized, but when i try to use the same music he used, i got copyrighted

Okay!?
I keep getting copyright claims on my NES playthroughs from people who have done heavy metal covers of the music from the game. I dispute all of them and they are normally dropped pretty quickly, but the last one actually denied my dispute because they felt it was still valid (even though it’s very clear that I had not used the claimant’s music). I’ve resubmitted my dispute but now I’m at risk of actually getting a copyright strike if they deny it again. RUclips doesn’t provide an option in their dispute forms for a scenario when the copyright claim was triggered incorrectly.
I JUST CLICKED THIS VIDEO AND THE FIRST AD THAT POPS UP IS AN AD ABOUT STOPPING RUclips COPYRIGHT CLAIMS
My dispute got rejected. Now, I need to appeal. But the problem is, I don't knos what to do. I badly need that copyright claim removed. Please help me
Thank you for the qdvice...I dont know, what should i do for my small you tube channel.
I never apload vedios anymore....
Another point. How can Buskers post their vids on YT and not get blocked?
I’ve used SO many songs from other people and I haven’t got copyright claimed, then I post a video of Eminem and o get copyright claimed!
This is exactly what I'm talking about mate! I've used lots of songs from different artists no problem, then 1 out of the blue says NO! At the moment, I'm disputing Ed Sheeran song, but it's OK for me to use legend David Bowie songs! Like what???
I got copyright claim by using “Up in trouble” By Mike Franklyn
I thought he would teach editing music to skip claims
That's not my specialty (thank goodness). 👊😀
It isn't just SONY and the other companies. It is channels that create videos and think they own public domain copyright. False claims are annoying!
and what if the music is relevant to the subject?
As a small RUclipsr this details i really need!! Thanks for your video
How do people use tiktoks without muting The audio? My viewers are not interested in my videos because of the RoyaltY free music
That's mental!
What if you just use clips of other people’s videos, no music?
I even have issues uploading my own music on videos, so annoying.
You are not alone.. However, you need to make sure that the music is 100% your creation. It cannot be music you got from iTunes or some place like that. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. 🎃👻
@@iancorzine Yeah it turns out my distributor tried claiming my music but all sorted now thank you.
Hey Caleb! Yeah this is really a great idea. I have never fully explained the difference between licensing and copyright. I’ll do it!
I'm really tired with them doing this, I claim the music isn't mine and I can't stop using it because I'm an edit channel.
We are having this happen to us as well. I have two licenses both the copyright license and livestream and post those licenses on our livestream.
I'm just live streaming me and some friends working on a car, radio in the background. RUclips tossed 6 copywrite claims at me almost instantly.
It's ridiculous. The music is not being used for personal or monetary gain and is not a vital part of the video.
Thank you so much. They’ve slapped 8 guitar covers off of my channel already!
Whoops
In Your description of the video You wrote sth like that :
Written Permission to Use “Ham Sandwich” by the Liars Club at 1:14 of this video was secured by this Creator on June 12, 2018.
