    Nice job
Back when bodybuilders were bodybuilders and bodybuilding was much better than it's been since the 90s
Ron Teufel was a beast. Doug Beaver was another forgotten great. Dave Johns was amazing. RIP to all three of those great men

Just broke, hard-working drug monkeys... Grimek and Reeves and Ross were the real heroes... with zero steroids.

Wow. What times. Never, ever, to be seen again. We reached our peak and prime, and have just downslided over the more than last 20 years.

You deserve many more views. Your work is meticulous, informative and far better researched than some popular channels that play fast and loose with history.

Great video! I remember this era in bodybuilding very well. Seeing a young and up and coming Tom Platz was fantastic! Dave Johns, the winner, appeared on the Merv Griffin Show shortly afterwards, something that Merv did throughout his career. Always gave bodybuilding great attention. Franco was a constant guest on his show.

I was there in Philly 76' when Szkalak won the Mr. America. He didn't "come out of nowhere"... he was the reigning Mr. California and absolutely smashed Johns in every category winning numerous best body part awards. Szkalak got jobbed later in his career because he wouldn't kiss Weider's ass.

I was there! The owner of our gym (Denny's Body Shoppe) at the time, Denny Holmes was in the Tall class so a buddy and I drove down from SF. I think Denny placed 6th. The highlight for me was going to the after party at Gold's. Dave Johns showed up to the party near the end of it. Didn't realize Bob Reis was in it. He managed the first Gold's in SF.

Dave and Clint both trained at Bill Pearl's Green St. Gym in Pasadena CA at that time. Both were great BBs. Dave was the nicest guy you'd ever want to workout around and Clint had such a great aesthetic build. It was great to see them again at their best. Thanks for posting.

That was a great video. Only in California would there be a full on parade for such an event. I actually got to see Ron Teufel guest pose twice. In New Hampshire in 1980 and Boston in 1981. He was big, ripped and had an artistic and powerful posing routine.

So an amateur bodybuilding show in 1977 not affiliated with Weider has better lighting and backdrop than any Olympia show to date... big beautiful American flag instead of the silly fake Joe Wieder bust( total narcissist) and an actual orchestra instead of the shitty looped music that we have today. Enjoyable physiques instead of the hideous bloated competitors that we have today. These guys also had legitimate jobs instead of grapefruit fucking nut jobs. Bodybuilding has not gone forward at all. These guys helped each other instead of talking about dick sizes(Dexter) Thanks for a great video once again.

The former owner of my gym bought the rights to the Mr. America title. With the parade and 1977 release of Pumping Iron, I'm surprised the Mr. America didn't take off. Maybe that's due to IFBB (the Weiders) making sure they had a virtual monopoly.

I saw Dave Jones at World Gym in Santa Monica in the early 1980s and I was absolutely shocked at how thick his chest and back were. If you put one hand on his chest and one hand on his back and measured the distance between the two it would be 2 ft. He was the thickest guy training down there in Venice Santa Monica at that time.

Very well researched , as usual. Beginning of the end of a great era. Some memories : C F Smith MD. was brilliant but a nut. Didn't care what he ate between contests and would blow up to a huge bodyweight between contests . Great genetics. Grymko didn't get screwed , as you alluded other than competing a month before ,this was a comeback of sorts insomuch he had taken a few yrs off. Clint Beyerle ,arguably , should have won the tall class being that he was in , according to some reports , the shape of his life and Perry wasn't quite as sharp.

Nice. Not sure how the promoter made a profit after everything he did to put on the contest. Neat and simple times back then. Noticed the pay phone on the wall at one location.

Initially, Ken Sprague was given contest promotions because he was the owner of Golds gym. The talk around the bath house... Ultimately, the AAU left the contest promotion side of the game because of the homosexuality and gay hustling of "Dakota" Sprague and his reputation. It all got rolled into the NPC where Sprague ended up being 'pushed out' for the same reasons. He turned it over to his surrogate Jim Manion and ran it until he lost interest.

Gotta disagree -- the IFBB was far more prestigious in regards to the bodybuilding fan base. The fact that it continued to grow while the AAU dissolved proves that.

    • @retromuscle7052
      @retromuscle7052  3 года назад +2

I was referring to the AAU Mr. America title as being the most prestigious, not the organization as a whole. At the time, the IFBB also held an annual American title known as the American Bodybuilding Championship (Mr. America) and the WBBG also held their own version of this title called the Pro Mr. America. Many people, including myself believe that the AAU Mr. America title had much more clout because of its history dating back to the 1930’s.
