Hi Kris, I like these type of videos. They are very informative and we get to know you better. Thanks for doing the work!
I have 3 shell casings from big artillery. One I keep by my bass drum to hold extra sticks, including my favorite Kriss sticks, (they are everything you said they'd be).
One is a 90mm diameter machined down to 50mm tall and made of brass. Hit it with a stick and it will ring clear and pretty for a looong time.
The other is made of steel and is 610mm tall by 100mm diameter. I hit it with a plastic mallet and get a cool gong sound. Scares the dog real good ;)
Alas, my Ludwig cowbell is cracked, but I have a Meinl in my wish list at Sweetwater, from your list of equipment.
Wearing my sky drum t shirt, waiting for my Krissmas mugs to arrive. When I get my raise next year, I will share it with you! 😉
      Peace,
      Tim 🤘

When I was in college I was super poor and could barely afford a guitar, let alone a bass, drums, keyboard, interface, all the other stuff you need to record music. But I wanted to write and record anyway! So I recorded about 4 songs just straight into a Mac without a microphone or interface with a shitty acoustic guitar. For the “drums” I would tap on the laptop with different things to make different sounds. I would use pens, coins, guitar picks, batteries, just about anything I could that would change the sound. Well 10 years later I’m sooooo glad I wrote and recorded those songs despite not having any equipment because I just recently re-recorded a couple of them and the changes are incredible! I’ve since become a better musician and I have ALOT more equipment now! I’ll even send you copies of both new and old versions so you can listen to the wild differences if you’d like them! Thanks for being one of my favorite drummers! You’re awesome!

Super late, but my favorite percussion instrument? Five gallon bucket. I tried to teach myself the drums as a youngster, but unfortunately life got in the way. I've worked construction my entire life and when we're a bit bored while on a break I'll fill five gallon buckets to different heights ( usually with dirt or dry concrete ) and have some fun. I'm a jokester, so anything I can do to make everyone laugh or lighten the mood on a stressful jobsite is a win for me.

My favorite percussion instrument is the regular drum set, but I think the most interesting one is the Cuica from Brazil. I have never played one, but I have seen it used a few times. To play it, you rub a bamboo stick attached to the head on the inside of the drum with a wet rag. You can manipulate the pitch by pressing on the head with your other hand. So cool!

My most favourite percussion is the cowbell
I never knew what it was, but when i heard Travis Barker using it in the song "feeling this", it just fascinated me how well it provided a distinct sound yet sat in well with the rhythm. I feel the cowbell should be part of every drummer's kit! It's an amazing inovation and brings out a lot of creativity from the musician. In my humble opinion the cowbell is my most favourite percussion.

I like the frog the most cause I've never seen it before. I did some research and it is called a Güiro and it "is believed to have originated with the Taino people (particularly in Puerto Rico), and was discovered as early as 1788." Others, though, claim it's origins lie "in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand". It is used in African, South American, Southeast Asian, and Caribbean music.
A neat bit of trivia is the Güiro is actually made from a gourd. In fact, Güiro is the spanish word for gourd. Cubans have "a specific ceremony found in Santeria religious practices that centers around gourds. This reverence for gourds is thought to extend to guiros and even shekeres."

Sometimes while listening to some music while working, I can't help but create beats by tapping the different sides of my laptop. Great presentation of the gear and demo of the sounds.

On my kits I have a woodblock and a hi hat mounted tambourine. My band tried to get me to use maracas too. I noticed when I bought them Meinl are really the only option for a lot of traditional percussion.
Of the things you opened, I'd say the frogs are definitely my favourite. I wouldn't ever use them in a performance, but I'd just want them as ornaments. Ornaments that make the coolest sounds.

I really loved the sound of the first cowbell, you can’t beat that honky-tonk woman Rolling Stones vibe.. that said when looking for a present for my little boy when I was working at Glastonbury Festival years ago I found one of those wooden frogs and it was one of his favourites so I’m split between the two!

Thanks for giving me a gift idea for my son. I already bought that frog, so no need to give me anything, but thanks for your shopping ideas.

It's hard to decide! I really like the cowbell and also love your creative way to use "untypical" percussion.....but I think my favourite is the pink bongo.....I will definitely buy it, to motivate more girls in my school to choose drums/percussion in the music lessons 😉
