His sound is from the punchy bright p bass and from the growly j bass pick up. Dude is such an underrated bassist, sick rumbly groove and great interaction with steve adler.
daniel lopez he is my only inspiration for wanting to pick up a bass again and re learn everything. when I picked it up I didn't want to use my fingers, so I started picking, and if I can play bass fluently I wanna learn guitar, slash and izzy and Brian may being my inspirations for guitar. in all seriousness, man duff is a fucking bad ass on bass because like slash he's more blues/jazz sound mixed with some hard rock. guns n roses came out between glam and speed metal came out (metallica, anthrax, mega death, and slayer). glam having a sort of flashy electric sound and speed metal being fast, I fell in love with the blues style of izzy and slash, along with the jazz sound of the bass of duff. it was different than everything at the time.
In a completely innocent, music fan way, I fucking love Duff McKagan! A true gent (when I met him), and he just comes so well in every interview you see. Long may he live and make music!
the pickup placement on the original JB Specials was closer to the bridge than any other Fender model. That's more crucial to the sound than anything else. Think 60s pickup spacing vs 70s :)
huh, way cooler guy than I thought, sported your shirts in JR High when your first album came out Duff, still one of my fav sounds, thanks for all the years of badd ass music.
In 1986 Fender didn't make a USA model Bass. So the Japan one's were as good as it got. Fender made a P/J (JV serial number on neckplate) and then the Jazz Bass Special N7XXXXX on headstock. Duff told me his custom shop bass Fender USA was making and only charging him $500 on the 1st VR tour. He was excited to say that he was getting a good deal on USA made Basses. I don''t think he's tried the Mexican model at that point, who knows if he's ever tried the MIM model? MIJ & CS blow away MIM crap,
I gotta say ... I have one of these Japanese Basses ... Not the Signature ... just the original as he said ... a lot better than the american or mexican ....!
Truth Japan makes great quality guitars! They do well and its great value for a Fender brand. USA basses are great too but for price you cant go past a Japanese made if a USA is out f reach price wise! Great video! DL. X
His sunglasses, I have the same one's. And there AMAZING!!!!! I think there the Italian made ones handcrafted 30years ago. Not the modern mexican hand made ones! euwwwwww!
Its a fender contemporary jazz special his original was made in japan...look ar my avatar picture...my guitar is a 2014 fender custom shop contemporary strat which are guitar cousins to the basses.
*STORY FOR YOU*... I spoke to a production manager at Fender about *"Artist Proof"* models for "Endorsed Artists." The conversation turned into an *ARGUMENT* for 30 MINUTES before he finally agreed and said that Endorsees are treated better than the "Buying Public." What was the big secret? Jesus Christ.
well duh, my go-to basses are the Mark Hoppus signatures (String-thru Jazz body, P-Neck w/satin finish, Seymour Duncan SPB-3 1/4 Pound Pickups). The original ones supplied to Mark Hoppus are custom shop made models, with Fenders version of the bad-ass II bridge and the Fender lightweight tuners you find on the 'deluxe' line of basses. You're already getting 90% of the 'real' instrument, it's dumb to expect the full custom shop version (which artists still pay for, just discounted) at the affordable price point the signature models are targeted at.
@John Smith I've got the same bass, white finish. I agree, it's a solid instruments but when you put it the way you did it makes sense why the artist would get the full deal but there are changes to the ones available to the public.
@CAlexandriaR1 - I don't change my strings either & i'm an average Joe playing in a couple of bands . My x singer/guitarist works for Fodera so i have him do all my luthier work including string change . Bass strings are expensive to mess up & there is a technique to layering the string on the tuning peg . I have an 1993 MIJ Jazz Bass & a Marcus Miller MIJ 4 string . Also 2 Rickenbacker 4001 basses 1973 & 1976 . My Marcus Miller is my favorite .
I have the Japanese version and the MIN pearl white Duff Bass have on order the new jazz bass Deluxe in Black the biggest difference is the newer ones have a Alder body the Japanese have Basswood bodies
the real FENDER jazz bass special --- made in japan--- from the 80s is the REAL DUFF BASS . not that new mexican made FENDER from this video , I own a pair of those japanese made jewels one fretless and one fretted , they are awesome instruments .
Thanks for the Recent Videos , WhenEver 😋 You're Ready KNIGHT 🤩🥰 ; You Can Have the " Electrifying * Rushes 🤭 🏹🎸💯‼️ , Just like Your Bandmates AXEL 🎤🎶🎸🤩
@CAlexandriaR1 Well for starters its not the bass being made in Mex that irks me its the fact that He knows damn well that NO Mex bass can stand toe to toe with those Japanese imports,so for him to say the Mex bass superseeds his Japanese models is a boldfaced lie. He was always bragging that his Japanese jazzspecials are killer and was the 1st piece of eqpt he bought when they were given a contract and cash bonus.
I got a japanese one, the same as duff's original bass except it is in some kind of bronzeish body colour. Due to the fact that it has some battlescars and someone modded an extra mudbucker against the neck it only costed me 400 euros :)
I just got my Duff Signature model this week. Had it set up, new Rotosound strings. It is a awesome sounding Bass!! I had no problem paying $1000.00 for it. It’s worth every penny.
Here in Brazil this bass costs around R$ 10,000.00 if you want a brand new one. Can be found used around R$ 5,000.00 or more too. Kinda sad to see prices of musical instruments reach so high because of taxes, considering that our current minimum wage (2019) is R$ 998.00, and this does not usually vary much for much of the population.
I have a Japan version!! and is very diffrent o fMexican version, I prefer Japan version, this duff signature is so expensiv for the quality of bass :/
@cottonfever1221 And to believe Duff who dont even change his strings when he makes a bold comment about how great they are and their build quality is better than the early 80's Japanese basses hands down,Thats what makes him a non-credible source, and fluffing the basses to many of his young followers who go and buy the bass that they believe is the best version, younger players hang on every word of their fav player and to be mis-leading is of poor taste(white lies are still lies)
BULLSHIT !! There's no way this Mexican copy of the original Japanese contempory series(jazzbass specials)is made better NO WAY ! They were even better than the American models at that time. So much so that while Fender was making the new Fullerton Re-issue series they imported the Japanese basses and put made in USA decals on them,THATS HOW GOOD THE JAPANESE STUFF WAS, Mex are better than the originals, NOT! He's a sell out, cant even change his own strings.
BuzzsawMoviesLtd check out my channel. old videos, but this bass sounds like duff. Helps to use .73 picks and Rotosound strings, but it's not hard to do.
I've met Duff. He is a really nice and down to earth guy.
His sound is from the punchy bright p bass and from the growly j bass pick up. Dude is such an underrated bassist, sick rumbly groove and great interaction with steve adler.
C'mon... no props to Mr.Adler??
daniel lopez he is my only inspiration for wanting to pick up a bass again and re learn everything. when I picked it up I didn't want to use my fingers, so I started picking, and if I can play bass fluently I wanna learn guitar, slash and izzy and Brian may being my inspirations for guitar. in all seriousness, man duff is a fucking bad ass on bass because like slash he's more blues/jazz sound mixed with some hard rock. guns n roses came out between glam and speed metal came out (metallica, anthrax, mega death, and slayer). glam having a sort of flashy electric sound and speed metal being fast, I fell in love with the blues style of izzy and slash, along with the jazz sound of the bass of duff. it was different than everything at the time.
He has an admirable vision on music, no frills, just pure and honest
Duff is one of my favorite bassists of all time along with Steve Harris :)
Duff is such a cool dude.
In a completely innocent, music fan way, I fucking love Duff McKagan! A true gent (when I met him), and he just comes so well in every interview you see. Long may he live and make music!
Duff seems like a great guy.
the pickup placement on the original JB Specials was closer to the bridge than any other Fender model. That's more crucial to the sound than anything else. Think 60s pickup spacing vs 70s :)

Good interview. His autobiography is very well written. Props on the sobriety!
I was waiting to actually see the bass he is talking about in its full glory.
Its a jazz bass special. Basically this one. ruclips.net/video/7t1_oJtPa8w/видео.html
Fender allows comments for this video but not the Frank Bello vid because his playing is brutal and they know it...
I gotta say ... I have one of these Japanese Basses ... Not the Signature ... just the original as he said ... a lot better than the american or mexican ....!
Fender Special Jazz Bass ... made in Japan around 1987 ... A Gem !
It's a Fender Contemporary. My friend has the Strat version of this bass! They're both identical.
his neck is maple, so long
Truth Japan makes great quality guitars! They do well and its great value for a Fender brand. USA basses are great too but for price you cant go past a Japanese made if a USA is out f reach price wise! Great video!

nice to see his talent and vision did not go to waste over booze and drugs, like so many.
Had one just like it in the early 90's except it was all black, bought it for $100.00 wish I would have kept it.
What split coil model is that?

P. Bass>>>all
Mr. Duff, Rex Brown ,too from Pantera did well, guy.

Duff, you're bleeding!! careful shaving man!! you're still one of the biggest influences for me musically.
Thanks for the Recent Videos , WhenEver 😋 You're Ready KNIGHT 🤩🥰 ; You Can Have the " Electrifying * Rushes 🤭 🏹🎸💯‼️ , Just like Your Bandmates AXEL 🎤🎶🎸🤩
Good ol duff
Can we please for once get a bass player playing their bass instead of talking about it
Stretch Armstrong.
It’s a jazz special and it has that on the headstock but Fender is calling it a p bass special. Which does it go by?
They have a p bass body and a jazz neck with both p and jazz bass pickups . I just call them Duff's signature basses
@CJW0212 i dont know, its like a turtles neck were the neck is really wide with a tiny head
It's a Jazz bass Special
@CAlexandriaR1 Well for starters its not the bass being made in Mex that irks me its the fact that He knows damn well that NO Mex bass can stand toe to toe with those Japanese imports,so for him to say the Mex bass superseeds his Japanese models is a boldfaced lie.

Yea, got a giraffe thing going on there, but he seems like a pretty down to earth guy.........I think hes a pretty good musician
too bad it's $1000. :(
pretty cheap for a fender p bass
I got a japanese one, the same as duff's original bass except it is in some kind of bronzeish body colour. Due to the fact that it has some battlescars and someone modded an extra mudbucker against the neck it only costed me 400 euros :)

@drmop2 same thing dude :D
Did anyone realise what t shirt Duff is wearing in this clip? I used to own one the same in 1979................
@drmop2 SAME! :D
LOL the video is called "Duff McKagan on his signature Fender P Bass" ...but it's called a Jazz Bass Special.
#rabbit #fox
well how can you say that...think you just have a personal beef
@superbass340 Why not?
I have a Japan version!! and is very diffrent o fMexican version, I prefer Japan version, this duff signature is so expensiv for the quality of bass :/
I feel like this guy and the GNR folks aged exponentially. Like I heard 'Welcome...' and now it is over. Really sad.
DV Swiatek It's been almost 30 years since Appetite came out.
what do u like?
hey Fender, way to not show the fucking bass in the entire video.
no need to hear it, its a great fucking bass honestly. Best tone ive ever experienced
Cottonfever1221
@jettsta2401 Like player, like bass, I supposed.
Wonder where did he get those scars form on his face..
Did he cut shaving that morning? =___=
Me dare el gusto de tener esa Fender Jazz Bass de la csm
40? He's more like 50 something!
He looks like Tony Montana with a wig.
ok, he is honest, but i dont want to buy his bass after watching this...:)
I don't even think Frank plays Fender a whole lot anymore. He has a signature with ESP now....
Pretty useless video; Duff is essentially saying "buy my bass, I have no idea how it's different than any other".
mikeb56 / He just said it, P bass but different shaped neck.
Maybe it was a bite from a very small insect
Isn't that much?
Of course,it's always a p-bass :P
why does he seem to be stoned? or is he just slow? :D
thats not horrible but to say you hate fenders is nonsense....have you ever had an american made fender p in your hands??
besr bass i've ever played on!!!!!!!!!!!
Shut up and PLAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!
Duff has a weird neck
This bass Is mexican
I think his head might just be too small for his neck because it's really wide and muscular and shit
Chicken pox or acne. It can get pretty severe.
I like his playing. I hate the band.
he looks like a finger with a wig on!
This guy has done one too many drugs lol
At least he managed to get clean from that shit years ago..
Does Duff's bass have normal sound like precision or jazz bass? Or just that Duff sound?
When someone else is playing it, it sounds like a P-Bass. Only Duff can get that sound.
BuzzsawMoviesLtd check out my channel. old videos, but this bass sounds like duff. Helps to use .73 picks and Rotosound strings, but it's not hard to do.
