- In this video, Rush bassist Geddy Lee discusses his Fender USA Geddy Lee Jazz Bass.
The Geddy Lee Jazz Bass has been a staple in the Fender line since 1998, but earlier this year, Fender announced the addition of the U.S.A. version.
The new U.S.A. Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is a unique version that combines the specs and features of Lee’s three favorite basses - two Fender Custom Shop versions of his signature model and the original sleek black ’72 Jazz Bass that he discovered at a pawn shop in Kalamazoo, Mich.

@@johnlemon7564 thank you

Geddy is all class. He's not some puffed up musician. He's one of those guys that can play and has the right attitude about it as well.
Absolutely. Geddy is a true gentleman, no inflated ego
When they toured with KISS back in the 70's, Gene Simmons couldn't believe that they weren't partying their asses off like KISS was doing. They would just go quietly go back to their hotel rooms and chill. Pretty funny.
The archetypal Canuck. (And apologies for suggesting that. LOL)
I don’t like the way you’ve used the word “musician” - the very definition of the word is “someone who plays music”. Maybe you’re talking about artists you just don’t like, and it’s fine to disagree with their personality, but don’t insult their music - your opinion is your own, and it has nothing to do with the player.
@@multi.instrumentalist It's not my place to 'defend' Music and Coffee, but it seems to be that their point would still stand if they'd said 'He's not some puffed up guy.' I didn't detect _any_ slam on 'musicians' at all. I took the reference to be about people-who-make-music who are prima donnas. Divas. In the words of one of my favourite musicians, 'They walk right in like they're a coming attraction."
I only have 3 heroes, Geddy is one of them. The other two go by the names Alex and Neil.
Lerxt and Pratt?
And our dear departed, beloved Chris Squire.
Yes. They're our heroes.
I have Neil's two drumming dvd's and watch them all the time, and I play guitar. I'm just such a Rush geek, and love watching him play.

You will like this tribute band I happened upon in Los Angeles 5 years ago called caress of steel - very enjoyable
Geddy is a kind of person that feels like a friend, even if you’ve never met him. There is something very kind and soft about him, while you still can FEEL his brightness, determination and intelligence underneath the surface. Rush made the music of my life and I shall be forever grateful.
Oh yeah, I get that feeling too. He's so unaffected and grounded, and in every interview I've seen with any of the members of Rush, they were respectful, engaging, gracious, eloquent and both interesting and interested. What more can I say??!
Sorry, he’s cool for sure. But, I can’t pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend.

Geddy is fantastic in interviews. He doesn't talk like someone behind the camera is adding another 0 to his endorsement value every time he mentions Fender or their products. Great guy.
i'll bet he's got a few interesting stories to tell and he would keep ya listening all night, oh' 62 ain't old you still got a few years left yet geddy..
Pat Brennan or decades
How the hell three guys with ridiculous musical abilities, the perfect amount of insecurity work a lifetime towards perfectionism, and absolutely 0 pride or arrogance found each other is beyond me, and they're best friends!
Because they love their job it wasn't about ok I wrote this so we are going to play it my way. It was we were here and let's see if we as a group can get too here.
@@raymondreid4987 The way Geddy described it, they were each equally vital to any success they achieved as a group, and were each an irreplaceable part of the whole. So for that reason, they split any profits exactly three ways, and never took what they had for granted.
Welcome to Canada, eh buddy!
They're Canadian
As Neil once said: “If you’re going to stay friends, then you have to say something if someone is out of line. We’ve kept egos in check all the way because of that.”
I saw them twelve times. Feels like that was not enough.
It isnt
I saw them 0 times and that's 12 times less times than it should be
Shame. Too bad they can’t ever reunite cause of Peart’s death today

Even though I'm not a Rush fan, Geddy Lee seems like a heck of a nice bright guy.
+Chris Fama your not a rush fan?
thats why your surprised hes a bright guy
they are all brilliant guys

How much rush have you actually listened to? Because I don't know anyone who is immune to rush's infectious playing.

Ged is probably the coolest “rock star” ever. No pretense, a healthy sense of self, great humor and down-to-Earth rationale. I could listen to him talk about practically anything for hours on end. Love the guy!
Truth!!!
Absolutely... and the same goes for Alex and, of course, dearest Neil. He could've read the ingredients off a bag of flour and I would've been hanging on to every syllable, I swear!

Geddy Lee and RUSH are brilliant. Simply brilliant. Heartbreaking that they have officially retired.
He seems like such a cool guy. Very humble.
Loved Geddy all my life, since High School in the 70s and FLY BY NIGHT.
At this time, i would like to thank the fella who traded in his bass to the pawn shop.
I met Geddy Lee backstage after the Montreal Roll the Bones show. He is the kindest, soft spoken polite man I have ever met.
i was at that show! The visual aspect of that show was the best compare to their other tour! And of course the sound was really good! i went to Québec city also, first row :) i met them in a restaurant in person after the Test for echo tour in Québec and yes Geddy was so cool and soft spoken and i didn't recognized Alex who was beside him! a total embarrassment!
It's pretty cool how he doesn't sugar coat anything and talks very frank about the pluses and minuses of the Signature Bass being mass produced.
"A bass of high quality material and affordable." This guy has a future in sales. Calm, no-pressure, trustworthy.
Not only Geddy Lee has crazy talent as a bass player, it amazes me that he can play those trick complex lines and sing at the same time.
AND use the foot Taurus pedals!
And play keyboards/synths!
Ironic that he got the bass in Kalamazoo, MI - the birthplace of Gibson.
A B C D E F G H I GOT A GAL' WHO LIVES IN KALAMAZOO
Harry Dowling - I thought that, too.
@@crusheverything4449 my first thought too.
Funny, I bought one of my 40 guitars, a $3200 12 string Takamine guitar from a music store in Kalamazoo. (34 of my total guitars, not including bass guitars, were 12 string). Of course, it was broken when they sold it to me, and they played games with me about getting it fixed. They screwed up the neck badly and my only recourse was to call Takamine, who put me with a luthier (3rd generation luthier, 2nd generation city policeman) in Tullahoma TN who took 3 months fixing it but it was perfect when he was done. Strangely, that big long-standing music store in Kalamazoo went completely out of business within 6 months, and I had no part in that. That was another of all my 12 string guitars that ended up given to one of the poor mountain churches in the Philippines. I only have one left, the 12 string fender used in my last 2 music CDs and my 2004 Europe tour. I stopped touring in 2007 (final, Asia tour) and devoted my life to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ from that day on.
That's nor irony, it's coincidence
This was great. Love hearing RUSH talk about their gear.
Why is it that even as a non-musician, I'd rather listen to Geddy do a Fender commercial, than watch just about anything on network TV?
Whether it’s his singing or just talking, I could listen to Geddy for hours.
You can hear from Geddy how musicians get attached to a particular instrument. It sounds unique and is almost like a good friend a soul mate. So if it ever gets stolen, there's must be a grieving period when you lose it.
I think that anyone who steals someone's musician instrument should be repeatedly kicked in the nuts.
ocean4315 Well said. If I lost my Warwick Corvette $$ I would cry for a month.
ocean4315 ok, you made me laugh for like an hour😂
don't you mean drawn and quartered?
I have literal nightmares about losing my jazz bass and having it stolen, it’s that real
Reminds me of Jaco Pastorius, his story near the end of his life still breaks my heart...
Geddy Lee is my favorite bassist all time!
Geddy Lee is actually the reason why I love and want a jazz bass. John Paul Jones too, but Geddy was definitely the one to hit the nail on the head for me. Love the video
Jaco really got me hooked on the jazz bass, but his was fretless and sounds alot different/better to me
jerry jah Well no shit, just like you are you and the guy I replied to is the guy that I replied to. Your comment is a comment, and now I'm going to eat a sandwich, that is actually a sandwich if you weren't aware of
jerry jah So your style must be watching videos about people you think suck. The irony is killing me
jerry jah and your style is to sing low because you don't have any range to speak of. You're probably a big fan of all the Scott Stapp alternative 90s clones
+Luis Gutierrez
Mitch Mitchell played one as well.
Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius. 3 contrasting bass players who have demonstrated the versatility of the Fender Jazz. If I could only choose one bass it would definitely be a jazz. I love Ricks, Alembics, Jaydee's etc but none are as versatile as the Fender Jazz.
+Cambridge Bass Lessons
P-J is more versatile.
alwaysopen I play a PJ and I can tell you this is incorrect. The pickups in a PJ bass will NEVER sound exactly like a P bass or exactly like a J bass, always like a muddier in between sound, so ship the PJ basses are versatile they have their own unique sound rather than both the sound of a P and a J.
now you can add Flee to this list ;) i'm very happy that it's finally happened
room42 Flea*
Flea is a really good bass player
Now that I have owned this bass for 8 months I will tell anyone that is thinking of getting one actually play it before you buy. I had played the Japanese version and the Mexican version before and I can tell you the necks on those feel different then my USA model. My USA has a thicker feeling to me than the imported models. So I’m seriously thinking about trading mine in. I ordered mine online and I’m kind of regretting it now. Update 11-20 Ignore my comments from a year ago. I was ( repeat) was thinking about selling or trading this bass. I instead had it professionally setup. Oh my God what a difference that made. This is far and away the best bass I have ever played! The thickness of the neck is perfect for sustain. I am so glad I kept this wonderful instrument. My number 1 from now on.
Amazing bass guitarist/musician/singer. He, John Entwistle, and Jaco Pastorius are my top three favorites. But, Geddy Lee is still living. RIP John and Jaco!
Chris DIYer the thinking mans bass player. Geddy rules.
Don't forget the Late Great Chris Scquire...one of Geddy's Biggest influences
@MrCloudseeker The Bass IS a guitar!
I purchased the Geddy Lee Signature Fender Jazz Bass a few years back. I have to admit that, It's my all time favorite bass. I'm sure the American made model is great!
I've owned two American Standard Jazz Basses: The first one was brown with a black pick-guard - I changed the pickups to make it even more punchie ... it was stolen!!!!!
I had it replaced with another Fender American Standard Sun-Burst bass. That now belongs to my son - he is "Slappin' da Bass now! :-) I've been playing bass since age 13 (I'm 60 years of age now) I own a 501 Hofner '63 bass, another Fender jazz bass , a semi-acoustic Washburn and a five-string Schecter ... My Geddy Lee Signature is very special - I use it most of the time! I Love it, I Love Geddy and I Love RUSH!!! (Will be in Montreal June 21, 2015)!!!!!!! Cant wait. :-)
How do the neck and fretboard intonate 6 years later? Thinking about grabbing one, but I heard some spooky stories about the super thin neck warping over time lol
Geedy Lee influenced countless bass players. A living Legend 👍
I just watched the Yes HOF induction and Geddy played the bass in lieu of Chis Squire. It was EPIC. I have a new found respect for Geddy. He is just one killer bassist.
I recently turned 40 and for some reason, I am now totally infatuated with Rush. Always liked them before but there is something about their band that seems to transcend just exceptional musical talent. Perseverance, love, Compromise, relevance Introspection etc.
it’s the lack of compromise with their integrity that separates them
Finally one of these videos! Tired of all these other minor musicians who were interviewed about their Fenders.
A legend speaks.
SpiritOfTheRadio Just because they're newer artists or play different genres than classic rock doesn't mean they're minor musicians. Quit living in the stone age and open your ears to new stuff you're not used to.
***** They are "minor musicians" until they get to the level of fame and talent to become legends. It's very understandable that someone wants hear one of their idols being interviewed, rather than someone you've never heard before.
***** I agree... but he does have a point about Geddy being a legend.. and it is pretty cool hearing him talk specifically about his bass. :)
***** Geddy, Alex and Neil are hardly Stone Age. They still produce great new music, tour constantly and have withstood the test of time. I certainly enjoy a lot of the new stuff, but this man is indeed a legend, and a nice guy to boot.
aDotFromTheFuture The thing that makes Geddy great isn't how many records Rush has sold, it's not how many sold out shows they've played: it's how hard he's always worked at what he does, and how sharp he's kept his mind over the years. These newer musicians will never achieve the "legend" status that Geddy has - not because they don't work hard enough to earn it - but because the stuff that sells multi-platinum these days isn't progressive rock. He's said that himself in interviews - that they feel really, really lucky that people kept giving them chance after chance to succeed. Nobody is going to look back 40 years from now and say that Taylor Swift is a legend, so don't use Geddy's popularity during a bygone era to explain his "majority" versus newer musicians' "minority." Just enjoy the interview for what it is: a brilliant, hardworking, nice musician talking about something he knows a lot about.
I am proud to call Geddy, Alex and Neil true Canadian icons. Thank you for representing our country proudly with your music, your talent, and most of all the true beauty in the attitude you bring to the world. This is why I love our country!! One thing I can say is, on stage you play with heart. I can feel the fun and joy you have like a child with candy. It's so much fun to watch! 😂
Geddy has always struck me a being such a sincere, humble and a genuinely good person. Very well spoken and intelligent with no ego. The type of person I wish I could be.
Geddy Lee is so right, every bass has it's own peculiarities. My main bass is a Japan Geddy Lee Signature. I can't get any other bass to sound like it.
I’ve got a Japanese one too. One of the last few to come out of there before the factory destroyed
I have a CIJ and bought the American Geddy Lee on tour when I thought my CIJ got stolen. I love the CIJ because it's very, very aggressive sounding. The MIA is warmer and more mellow - overall rounder. It's still got that 70's spacing growl though, it's just not as in your face. One thing I really appreciate about the MIA is the neck profile is thick enough to be stable. The CIJ neck is slim and fast, but that comes at the price of stability. I have to adjust the truss rod on the CIJ every season to keep it playing well. I've had problems with that while touring too - especially during the winter when I'll be in a warm climate one week and cold the next. Since the adjustment is at the heel, I end up disassembling the bass at the venue. Annoying.
Thank the Lord! He ended the Tom Sawyer debate!!!!!! :D
Geddy used the Richenbacher on Tom Sawyer. He is lying to muddy the waters, and for the benefit of this sponsor.
Why does he play a Rikkie on the Tom Sawyer music video?
What they use in music videos are generally all for show. Maybe they have a Signature Guitar they’re trying to show off and such. In the studio, they use whatever sounds the best for the record...regardless of what it looks like.
Elmo Blatch and you know this because? Right. You don’t. I’d trust the man over random RUclips guy
You can't even spell Rickenbacker correctly.
I grew up listening to Rush.....awesome music to this day.....nobody makes music like Rush.....👍👍
All three members of Rush are so well grounded. Great guys. RIP Neil
Why is it that the bands with the best bassists are always AMAZING
Because the bass carries the whole band.
I love 'Moving Pictures', Geddy is an amazing bassist!
This just made me even happier that I chose a Fender Jazz bass for my first bass lol. I'm a guitarist, got a bass out of necessity for recording. So far it hasn't failed me yet!
Yup, drummers tend to have one around if we like working...
You kinda look like someone I know named Dale
Geddy Lee, man. He's a musician's favorite musician! Love him!
The intelligence and humility coming out of this man I could watch this all day.

That's what I always loved about Rush. They're just a bunch of musical nerds, who love their craft.
I love how its stamped on the end "Badass Bass."
I'm a guitarist that also likes to play bass. The Jazz is one of the only basses that I can play comfortably. I don't know what the deal is with the Geddy Lee Jazz neck, but it's more comfortable than any other Jazz bass I've ever played.
Seems like a nice, smart, sharp and articulate guy.
Then you talk to people who know him and you find out that in reality he really is a nice, smart, sharp and articulate guy.
He's just a very sympathetic person who also looks intelligent and is really talented musically. His voice is really unique, that high pitched shriek he had, very very few can imitate that.
That's why so few bands cover Rush songs.
Yes, that must be true. Except for easier ones to sing.
You should see Paul Stanley in a interview.
All the best to Geddy, always. Him and his music has been very important to me for a very long time.

I so want one of those, I have always played Fender basses because for me the shape of the instrument, the action, the balance and tone has always fit me. I can just sit there holding one, it always feels right, and I'm like half the size of all you tall bass players. I play keyboard too and even there I do prefer the jazz finger bass sounds on it. Geddy->Entwistle->Squire->Jaco
Jaco > Geddy > Entwistle > Squire
@@dylanphelan3010 in terms of skill and musicianship you're definitely right. Only I'm more familiar with Squire over John.

When he speaks u can hear the intelligence and the experience
I really like watching the amateur artists' videos giving details about various instruments and much respect to them. It's just so much more satisfying hearing the pros give their in-depth analysis.
My brother used to own a jazz bass. It was my favorite. It has such a warm round sound to it...
Have had the honor to see rush twice and omg awsome is a big understatement. Hi from germany
I love how FMIC made a video for a signature Fender bass, and the soundtrack was recorded with a Rickenbacker.
uh dude, Mr Lee just said that it was done on his no1 jazz.
Red Barchetta/Limelight/Camera Eye was Rick. The rest of MP was the jazz. He's stated that numerous times, and it's clearly Rick because there's a bump in the upper midrange and not as strong of a low end with the Rick, ergo why he stopped using it.
If I may quote Jason Segel from 'I Love You, Man' ...and pardon the expression... "...It's fucking RUSH!!" ...they could play a song where he's playing a Steinberger and I'd still be ecstatic... :P
Limelight was on the jazz

Bring back the Rickenbacker Geddy! That is your sound! The Fender is too mellow we need to hear those strings twang.
Geddy Lee = o melhor entre os melhores !!!
I really respect his honesty in this vid, talking about how every bass will sound different rather than just trying to talk up the product like, "buy this and sound just like me," and also about the production problems that led them away from the Badass bridges. Very refreshing to hear a legendary musician allowed to just put that stuff out there, and cool of Fender to leave it in. I want one now and I'm not even a real bassist.
I just love him so much. I want him to be my dad.
No other bass sounds or plays like a Jazz Bass.....he's right, it has its own Mojo
This guy is one of the influences I have for learning how to play bass
These guys are all great at the PR stuff. I can't believe I missed them. I took a break from music and when I came back as a listener, Rush had ended. They played in the Twin Cities in 2012 and I decided to not go because of my own non-drama...kids, always take the shot. You never know when it's your last chance!
