  • Painting realistic trees takes a lot of time and attention to detail. When depicting many trees in a forest such as in a painting like this, layering the foliage and branches properly can be key to creating a beautiful autumn scene.
In this video I show you how to paint amazing autumn colored trees with acrylic paint as I begin with this landscape painting.

“Deep Forest” resonates within me and seeing the pixilation of leaves and light spots brings me home to my forest roots, and sitting next to Gertrude as she painted the very paintings which hang on my walls here in the hermitage. Old men can say things to the young that are corny and we get away with it: Boy! You rock! You soar! You rule! I am so totally grateful. On my canvas waiting for me to get started painting, is the roughly blocked in trees, path in the woods, water, reflection pond, etc...and I was so unsure how to proceed but now, after watching about three hours of your work, I’m energized and today will spend the entire day “downloading” all this visual information I uploaded to my memory watching you. I literally will go from 3 hours of you painting to my work here now. Mega exemplar that you are! Question or Request for future things: Can you do a featured segment within a larger video that shows “start to finish how to hold the brush and paint the leaves (pixelation) so my very literal mind can absorb technique. Expanding that question: Can you release to us the “habits” or “gestures” or “brush manipulations” you use to express the image and “image movement” (vectoring/energetics/forms-of-manipulating/brush-strokes)...like I got this idea, see, your muscles in your arm, hand, shoulder, your body sway, etc. all is like MUSCLE MEMORY to you so you are like a fish in the sea not noticing you are swimming surrounded by water. You may do this automatically, but like an ice-skater controlling the blade, can you reveal proper or good technique you have, focusing your “sharing” on the style of your motion, the discipline of your paint strokes, etc. Clear as mud? I want to know how you perceive your own skills and habits and how you might recommend that we emulate, and warn us of things not to do. Phew! I type as fast as you paint! THANKS! SO USEFUL! -Glenn

Returning to step one again today, Chuck, watching you do details in the middle of paintiings when that hump is there and it looks and feels like syrup or crap. I thank you for your persistence. I am learning so much painting. I read the lives of artists, and studied Van Gogh for four years and even got to write part of a chapter in a book about his letters, but no matter who I go to for lessons, I return to you as you speak a language I can understand deeply. I actually remember verbatim the dialog or monolog of your videos, and you’ll say somethng I remember hearing for the first time four or five years ago…man…I’m retracing a lot of steps. I don’t like to just paint well, I like to paint totally beautifully. You showed me it is possible and I do it now. I’m gathering things (skills and techniques) I overlooked. Thanks for all. Your works hang on our walls, too.

I am blown away by the way you brought the upper portion of this painting together! Amazing to watch those trees go from splotches of paint to actually looking like leaves. So glad I found your tutorials.

This one was a particular favorite because of the fall foliage and the really great example of painting trees! I have been wanting to try birches or aspens with fall colors and this really inspired me. You are so very talented! Thank you for sharing your talents!

I love adding lots of detail also. This painting would be great for an idea of mine to paint a memory of mine. I rode a horse into Chopwell Woods a long time, he was a beautiful golden colour just like these golden autumn leaves. We hadn’t been in the woods for long when Chester started and his muscles quivered in fright. I gentle calmed him and when I looked in front of us, Chester had seen a beautiful Fallow Deer Doe come out of the shadows right across us. The Doe wasn’t at all afraid, I think she only smelled and saw horse not human. I was absolutely thrilled to see her so close and rather than startle her I kept Chester at a gentle walk right toward her. Since I wasn’t afraid, Chester settled down and just walked on as if it were a totally natural day in the woods, me, him and the Doe in early morning sunlight. Quietly, the Doe crossed slowly in front of us and popped softly up a bankside on the opposite side of the road. Chester and I watched her slip into the shadows of the pine trees and melt way into memory for the rest of my life. It’s one of those Oh my God, moments when a totally and free beautiful beast chooses of its own free will to come close a offer the human a moment of almost spiritual repose. Only horse riding allowed it, only Chester’s trust in me keep the moment in time so calm and peaceful. It was just like the deer felt she accepted us in her home of about 900 acres of pine and mixed woodland managed forest in the north of England’s Derwent Valley. I’ve lived in this valley all my life. With only a very few special encounters offered from wildlife living with me in the ancient valley. I’m hoping to paint as if Im sitting on Chester seeing the Doe slip out in front of us. So I need to paint just Chester’s head and neck with the reins to my hands as If the rider is viewing the scene from the horses back. Is that impossible? Hummm, May be for me. But I might try...

Glad I found you; I just subbed. Thank you so much for describing your layering process. I am 10 weeks into painting (and starting with acrylics) and watching you layer and hearing your description of why you are doing something are extremely helpful for a new student. It is helpful to know that the early stages of a painting can look odd (not a criticism) and how you refine and re-refine (e.g. tree trunks). Brush choice is important (tho confusing to me for now) and watching you try one and then reject it is refreshing. I slowed your vid down to quarter speed so I could watch your leaf painting technique. I love your views of the palette and how you brush-dip and mix colors. I look forward to watching more of your vids and improving a lot as a result. Thank you so much.

Chuck, I am a extreme cake Decorator, whom dabbles in drawing. You have inspired me to try and paint this. I must say I have watched this now twice and your attention to detail as much as your communication skills is not only inspiring but you are an amazing instructor.
I would of really appreciated seeing you put that grey mist in ( By road and on left side in the back ) or a explanation of why. I also, would of really loved to hear what you were thinking while creating the illusion of full branches covered in leaves, the direction and highlights, being spectacular. You paint a picture in my mind of what your vision is, and that to me is a priceless quality. I get why you had to speed, it up, maybe a zoom in and explanation of how you created something out of nothing, would of been the only thing, I was missing. However, you gave so much detail in instruction, I feel confident enough to give this a shot. You do not have somewhere we can post our work for a critique? I am sure with so many followers you could not critique us all, but, would love to see others recreations too..Thank you for sharing such a gorgeous painting and your amazing instruction.
