Could not ask for a more clear and concise expert to explain the subtlety of oil painting technique. This master learned by doing, so he knows all the mistakes already, he can save you years of time, tune in and get going.
I just discovered you a day ago, and I have watched almost every video, and subscribed. You are a great teacher and I really appreciate the info. I struggle with trees, and I think this will be very helpful. I paint with acrylics but want to try oils, but I think your tips will be helpful with acrylics as well. Thanks!
I have only painted in acrylics before now, but was not satisfied with the results when I tried landscapes or portraits. I like your videos because I am forced to see things in a completely new way. Some things carry over, but Oils is a much different discipline from Acrylics. You are not only a talented artist, but also a good teacher. Thank you!
That was so unbelievably helpful - I really learned a lot - it’s an area I’ve struggled with because I didn’t follow this sequence of steps. Like the eye squint suggestion.
Being a Floridian, I paint a lot of Sabal palms which still seems to be a challenge after a lot of years. I would love to see your take on how to paint them.
Thank you , you are a great teacher, since I subscribed, watching all your videos. I learned a lot, this was helpful to paint a tree , waiting to see more videos from you. Hope teach about painting palm trees and bushes too.
Excellent for visual instructions. Thank you. You know the Russian 19 th c painter, Shishkin. He did great studies of trees. You are in that manner of painting. Good for you.
This was great. I am trying my best to get fall colored trees down. Its tough. I think I've got some good things going on but it seems more like luck and just going back in with greens to make the leaves pop out better. I'd love to see a tutorial for fall colors in trees. I'm going to get on the patreon so I can post my current attempt in there for comments
oak tree: block tree shape, add dark accents, trunk,green-blue, burnt sienna natural, loose, natural organic, cover, think shapes, big simplify, shadow blue, burnt sienna, squint to simplify, see the general shape, shining the light, built clusters of leaves, connected, sky holes, push back with high lights yellow burnt sienna, thicker, not individual leaves, clusters top of tree more sun, orange color to it, start to details, high light, value, not too bright, not too dark, cooler, blue for sky reflecting on the tree, cool blue-green deep on the tree, not too flat, volume, dark put back the right place, squint, detailed, stroke put trunk, sunlight brighter, sky holes, blue-white edges shape keep clean the blue, darker than the sky,,
what the thinking that makes the sky holes not just appear as Christmas ornaments dots. is it color consistency with the outer edges to all ow for the illusion of the sky in the sky holes
You are much appreciated and very inspiring I would hope that you can make a video on how to grow that bad mother mustache you got going on there much love thank you
I’m new to oil painting. I’m at the stage that I’m letting each layer dry before applying the next layer. I notice that you’re painting wet on wet in this video. Are you also mixing a little medium with your paint?? Thanks.
Not 100% the same, but similar. Acrylic dries extremely fast while oli paint takes a week+ to dry. Burnt sienna is dry in a day and white is dry in two weeks. But average is a week for most colors. And this makes the paint constantly workable as you're painting which does affect the process to a degree. Oil can be pushed and pulled and blended in seconds when you put the brush down again. The general points he's making still hold true but the way its applied is completely different. Also, the way he's working big to small is not as common in acrylic painting.
I think what you failed to do is to explain how the form of the tree is structured. Looking at the picture I can see there is the topmost part of the canopy casting a shadow over the lower right part of the canopy. There are parts coming out and others going into the background. These are important when drawing trees because when looking at such a complex shape, it is difficult for the brain to make sense of it. This is the biggest hurdle with drawing trees I think, not quite the "technique" or the "process."
I have a problem with the stench of green color paints. No matter whether I get it from mixing primaries or from premade greens. Is there any solution to make the smell more tolerable?
I have not used my oil paints yet but since you don’t like the smell of the paints maybe you can try out water mixable oil paints. I have also heard from him you can use regular oils and water mixable ones together.
I wish you would say more about the brushes you are using. ALSO, I think it would be really helpful if you would answer reader’s questions. They are good questions which I think many of your subscribers would like answered. 😊
His hat makes everything 10× more educational 😤💯
Lol... I love the fashion effort! It adds to his adorableness!
One of the best oil painting teachers on YT.

"chances are, you'll be painting trees"
Nothing has ever been more true for me. I've painted a lot of muddy leaves and dark highlights lol
Hi Chris - thank you for the tidbit that the tree is darkest, sky lightest and ground is mid value. Never considered that before
I would love to see a demo on a forest of pine trees in the mid ground and another behind in the background. Your videos are always helpful.
Very important skill to paint tree - ad a first step to paint lanscapes. Thank You for very helpful lesson.
You're a really good teacher and you are adorable, win win
I appreciate your style and teaching methods. Thank you
Your hat!!! Cute. Classic.
I love the hat too 😁
I would Love to see you do more about painting trees! Especially how you address painting them in different places in a landscape.
Great idea to paint basic shapes in a mid tone....then go for lights and darks. Nice lesson. Thank you.

I love your painting style. It looks so laid back and simple but it has such an amazing effect

Great narrative - lots of little nuggets of advice embedded in the larger lesson. Also, nice lid.

Thanks.
What size brush did you use for this demo?Thank you for this video.
Why did you not paint that nice ground shadow of the tree? It seems one of the good establishing darks?
Fantastic!
Do you have any videos on water, especially lakes?
Great 🌲
When I mix a bit of oil into a part of finishing work it drys differently. Will that eventually go away? I’m concerned
Nice bro
That’s a snappy hat….it screams painter.Thanks for the lesson.
I wonder if this process also applies with acrylic painting.

How do I fix a messed up tree? I tried to paint a tree over another tree and it’s all muddy now!!! Help!
I think what you failed to do is to explain how the form of the tree is structured. 🙏🙏👏👏👏
Came for the tree, stayed for the handsome man lol
I tend to paint semi realistically. I am also not that skilled! But I do like to use colour rather than realism. Do you ever paint semi realistically?
You almost look like Hugh Grant with that hat lol
You don't let time to dry among layers?.. isn't get it " mud"?
He starts with thin layers and slowly makes the paint thicker which makes it easier to lay paint on the thinner layers without it getting really muddy
I have a problem with the stench of green color paints. No matter whether I get it from mixing primaries or from premade greens. Is there any solution to make the smell more tolerable?

@@mag2094 thank you very much.
They sell very good water based oil paints these days👌🙂
I use a clothes pin to keep nose pinched while leaving my hands free. Then I hold my breath. Works pretty good.
I wish you would say more about the brushes you are using. ALSO, I think it would be really helpful if you would answer reader’s questions. They are good questions which I think many of your subscribers would like answered. 😊
He uses rosemary and co brushes he has a video for starters that don’t know what kind of brushes they need
I didn’t mean what brand of brushes. I meant the size and shape....
@@lindaburton1633 well idk what sizes he really uses all I know is that he recommends flat brushes sorry about that
4:8 :))
Sound quality is not very good. Hard to hear clearly.
whats with the sun hat? ROFL wtf
Hat✓
