I've been using this model for about 5 years (not regularly), but just last week I discovered you can pause it, flip it upside down, turn the arms to the other side, unpause, and continue using it in inverted mode... Genius!
This is one of the BEST reviews/tutorials I've come across in ages! It was well thought out, informative and engaging. I'm new to hybrid shooting and film making and so I was super hesitant to invest in a gimbal. I researched and compared all the offerings and always leaned toward the DJI Ronin S. It's an investment in both money and learning so I was not going to make the decision lightly. After watching your video twice I decided to pull the plug and buy the Ronin S. I love that it can handle large rigs as well as small. That the motors are virtually silent and hefty. The options for future add-ons to the gimbal. I love that the interface on both the gimbal itself and the app are intuitive. They've also updated features for the Sony mirrorless line so that's aBIG plus. I'm sill a little skeptical about the weight but I tried the Tilta and that thing was a beast. Although I loved practically everything about the Tilta it was too heavy for me. I have a Sony A7III with not only the kit lens but the Sony 85mm f1.8, the Sony 50mm f1.8 and the Samyang 35mm f2.8 to start me off. My DJI Ronin S comes in this Friday! I'm super excited! Thanks for providing such great content!
Thanks man. Really helpful. Amazing that Ronin doesn't have any tutorial like this on their website which is a shame on them. They should pay you for doing it for them.
I've been using glider for a long time, and choose to get this beast. It took me a long time to get good in the glider like 2-3 months before I could fully utilize using it, it was pretty heavy but learning it day by day makes your arm stronger, in the Ronin-S it took me 1 hour just to figure out everything, Blew my mind about how good it is, you don't need to think about balancing and anything, Downside is its really heavy, I am using 80d armed with 18-35 f1.8 Sigma Art lens, And its really heavy specially doing the 360 (vortex shot) Close to the face where you lift it up so close to the face, but My film making really blew to the ceiling its like I am now 100 times better than before, Thanks for this video helps me add some tips on using this beast, Great video keep it up!
I'm so excited for my Ronin-S to arrive tomorrow. I added the command unit to the order so the phone app isn't a necessity (although no clue whether or not its worth the extra $120 yet). I haven't seen a bad review on this thing yet, and I've been paying attention since it came out. Also would like to point out that DJI offers payments through a company called Affirm where you can set up an actual monthly payment plan. I went with the 12 month plan which is $78 a month. Hard to believe it wasn't even that long ago that this technology was only really accessible to big productions.
Very thorough tutorial, thank you. I am on my way to a shoot where I will be using a friend's Ronin S for the first time. Your tutorial has given me the confidence to do so without fear. I have been looking at getting my own gimbal, and the Ronin S keeps ticking all the boxes.
Best review on the Ronin-S I've found so far! Just came in the mail and this 1 video has me feeling confident to leverage all the features and really sink my teeth into exploring how it can improve my shots. Cheers!
Thank you for this review. I recently purchased this gimbal and am looking forward to using it. You explained some things that I had wondered about. Happy shooting!
Great review/tutorial! Thanks for taking the time and effort to create such an informative video. I've been hesitant to pull the trigger (pun intended) on a gimbal for my GH5, but this video is very encouraging.
Hi! This is the best tutorial I have seen on the DJI Ronin S. It really helps a lot, especially when you are a beginner. Yet, I cannot manage to enable the channel control settings for the infinite roll on the application. They are somehow inactive. Do you have any idea why and how I can solve the problem? Thanks a lot!
@@CineD Hi, no what I mean is - can I leave the dual stabilization active on both my GH5's body and lens when mounting it to this gimbal or do they have to be turned off so that it doesn't mess with the gimbal's own stabilization - I have heard mix advice with some saying having all 3 turned on will make the video look unnatural and some saying having stabilization turned on for the camera and lens + the gimbal makes it even better. What is your experience?
Ha, thanks Sven. I hope you used one of our sponsors so we don't make these reviews in vain :-) I am sure it will arrive soon as they are really shipping numbers now. Nino
All these films are not for vain - you improve your english and become a great presenter - all for free ;-) But a sponsor and dealer in "real" Europe would be great. But if one of the existing sponsors offers a quick delivery of the Ronin S and Mavic 2 Pro I am your man (again)
I emailed DJI soonafter purchasing mine back on august 2nd. told them i did wedding films and really needed it shipped soon. within a week it was at my doorsteps. i believe they got my email and prioritized my shipping. after the purchase confirmed on august 21st, it arrived august 24th the day before a wedding
Great review and in my opinion the best out there on RUclips I have watched them all well made and informative video with great content. now subbed thanks, just bought the S myself
Actually I use my Ronin S one-handed quite a lot! Every time I'm doing shots on rough terrain where I am also quickly moving around the Subject I'm filming, I will have one hand on my Ronin and the other I use to balance myself. Well certainly those kind of shots cannot take much longer than let's say 3-5 minutes as they are very exhausting! But thanks to a little strength training these shots become definitely feasible ;D BTW awesome Review and tutorial! This has really helped me a lot to understand the app :D
BEST review out there ! Actually gave up on most other RUclips reviews as they all seem to be sponsored by a company. Do you have comments on the new Zhiyun Weebil or crane 3 vs the Ronin S ?? Wanted to upgrade from my Zhiyun crane 1 V2 , but the more RUclips you watch the more confused you get LOL . Other RUclipsrs said they don,t like the Ronin S as the motors are weak ?? Anyway subbed ....Great Job
@ 11:10 You talk about the default follow feature. My Ronin does not do this. When i move left and right it does not follow, the camera will remain still. Its hard to search for this. Google search come up with different follow options. Do you know how i can set this feature? Please!! : )
Your video information is excellent. I'm subscribing. Your video is very informative and professional. Unlike some who kind of just show off their new gadgets/toy, and try to act funny or silly. Very well done
Nice review man. As my RUclips channel is growing and I get request for more serious projects I decided to invest and purchase one today. I’m excited to learn what I can do with it for my future videos and projects. I subscribed. 👍🏼👊🏼💪🏼
@@uzibatish172 that just means you wont be able to use the follow focus wheel or the record button. I would look into that. I'm using a Canon 5d mark iv
Late to the party, I know! When are the balance settings actually lost? When it is powered down and/or when the camera is removed? I tried the MOVA Air a few years ago and it was awful. Full of bugs and , contrary to what they advertised, very difficult to balance.
hello there so i placed my channel 3 control setting to roll, but how does it automatically roll like yours?how to do get it to automatically do that pls
I love the handheld gimbals for the sake of footprint. I can squeeze in and out of crowds at weddings and stuff without being this big presence that often makes people nervous and less natural.
What was the focal length for your demo shots on this video? I am considering getting into home and apartment walk throughs for real estate, and I am not sure what focal length would be best for my Sony a7iii.
Hello! I am fairly new to gimbles and I just bought this one. However, on my first try, I had a lot of wobbly footage as if the camera was on a stick. The DJI forum had many similar complaints. I was wondering if you had any similar issues and if so, how did you correct them? FYI My camera is the Canon 1DX mark 2 with a 16-35 I want to use it for real estate video walk throughs and its going bonkers! I am hoping that it is simply user error but I could use any advice possible to get this corrected. My balance settings are all Excellent on all 3 axis and the motor parameters are all set at just under 50. thank you for any help! And stay safe!
Hey there, I noticed similar results. Using the gimbal doesn't mean you're going to get dead still movements unfortunately. I find that if I use my 5D4 instead of my 1dx2, its much easier to control since its lighter. also a lighter lens always helps. I was using my 24-105 f4 L, but the 16-35 2.8L works even better. Bottom line you still have to be very still in your movements, even just panning. I am getting better with each practice/shoot.
Noah Barker hi Noah, thanks for the reply. Yes the 1D is a beast but it should handle it.what I found out that helped a bunch was right before I did a session I ran the auto tune feature and it made all the difference in the world! The wobble that I experienced was more than just my inexperience. (Which is a problem for sure!) but I believe I’m getting the hang of it now! Thanks!
Leo Mars positive, you probably aren’t using the right cable. Plug the android style cable into the bottom half of the USB port on the 5D Mark IV and the light on the focus wheel should turn green. Did you update the gimbal with the computer and not just the app on your phone?
Hi Nino. I can buy one second hand from a colleague for a reasonable price. I'm shooting restaurant shots, small businesses and nature shots. Do you reckon it'll come in handy for my A7iii? I usually shoot handheld, but would like more stability. Cheers for a reply!
I need some help, has anybody connected a Ronin S with a DJI Focus Pro Motor. I was told and saw advertisements that it would work together, I was even told by someone at Amazon that it would work together, went on to ask for a cable that wasn't just a USB-C to USB-C and it turns out he sent me a link to that very product. So compatibility, do they actually work using RSS to USB-C and to power Ronin S to USB-C. Any help would be useful. Thanks
I recently got my Ronin S. I have managed to balance it well (Sony a5100+Rokinon 12mm lens) expect I can’t for dear life get the vertical tilt balancing straight up how it says it’s suppose too. Don’t want to cause any stress on the motors, can someone please help? 🥺
Nice review and the best so far I have seen. One question that I do have I have a D850 and I calibrate it. Now is it normal that when I move the stick from a 180 degree angle to a 90 degree or a 270 the gimbal gets a kick or a motor overload? I don’t think it’s the weight since it says it’s compatible. Or is it it’s just I’m pushing it to far and it’s just me trying to push it further to either side and the motors overload because of the wheight.
That was really just practice ... I am using gimbals like this all the time. But yes, that kind of shot is not easy to do if you are not so experienced. Nino
Have to express gratitude in pointing out the *necessity* of auto-tuning every time you rebalance with new lens! During a wedding, my pan and tilts from joystick were less than smooth, lots of jerks and jumps in trajectory. The lesson: never auto-tuned. After I troubleshot upon coming home, discovered that it was essential for perfectly smoove movement. Take note!
Great review + content as always Nino! Just wondering how you find the actual stability / smoothness of the gimbal during motion compared to the Movi m5 ? Is it similar ? or does the Movi edge it out? Would love if they released a 'pro' option made with carbon fiber / leaner weight + better motors + replaceable smaller (6-8hr) batteries for $1200. Not sure if just me - but seem to see more micro jitters in RONIN S footage than Movi footage ?
Good question, I didn't do a side-by-side. Overall, I still prefer the MoVi M5 in terms of its stabilization ... also the dual handle setup simply gives you better results. BUT the Ronin-S outperforms in stiff winds as the motors are more heavy-duty than the ones on the MoVi M5. Nino
Thanks for the follow up - yeah be interesting to see if Movi ever bring out a smaller competitor, pretty torn on them! Will also be interesting to see how the dual handle setup rolls on Ronin S... keep up the great work with Cinema 5D btw - Awesome stuff :)
Is that the Panasonic G9 on the Ronin S in this review? If so, do all of the features, including the focus wheel and the focus motor work with the G9 as of today?
I just got mine and the toggle lever to lock and unlock the grip from the gimbal is very rough and does lock as smooth as yours...have you hear of this issue?
You might have figured this up by now but is your gimbal off when you try to switch the locks? You need to have each joint unlocked before you turn it on or it will resist you
karadytube you should never turn the steadyshot off on the a7iii even if it’s on a tripod. Having a sensor stabilization means that your sensor isn’t fixed and you can easily have bad results with the stabilizator off

Do You got a video for smooth running settings.!??
I just picked up the Ronin-s and it's my first gimble. Wish it came with a gym membership...this thing is a work out
I'm sure you haven't tried the Ronin-M before? You would probably need a black card gym membership lol
It's almost winter and I started sweating lol XD
You could try grabbing a shoulder strap off of amazon. They help a lot for the Ronin-S and they're only about $30 USD.
Hahahaha 🤣
Same… I’m going to need someone else to help me hold it.

Thank you! Unfortunately can't help you with that camera, I have no experience with it.
Need setting details for mode 1 you used?
Whats the setting for 1st mode?
Is it possible to use a Canon camcorder on this thing.
Hi, I am just wondering how to do the object tracking in 5:08? It is hard to keep the object in the center for me.
That was really just practice ... I am using gimbals like this all the time. But yes, that kind of shot is not easy to do if you are not so experienced. Nino
Great video! .. Thank you. Looking forward to use it with my Panasonic G9.
Does it make a small idle motor noise?
What type of cameras is that?
very comprehensive and informative... well done...

Take note!
Happy to hear Aaron!! Nino
For some reason when ever autotune the motors they do this shaking/trembling things
true
Are you wearing a kippa?
Looks nice if it is
:)
Good video too
Very good video tutorial, un saluto dall'Italia
I just got mine and the toggle lever to lock and unlock the grip from the gimbal is very rough and does lock as smooth as yours...have you hear of this issue?
You might have figured this up by now but is your gimbal off when you try to switch the locks? You need to have each joint unlocked before you turn it on or it will resist you
how do you record your phone display settings?
Do i have to turne off the steadyshot in sony a7 iii when i am using ronin s?
karadytube you should never turn the steadyshot off on the a7iii even if it’s on a tripod. Having a sensor stabilization means that your sensor isn’t fixed and you can easily have bad results with the stabilizator off
Alex Stoyanovich Many thanks
How can i find the original "ronin dji pro" app on Android?
Great tutorial and review, thanks!
Thank you!
How does the gimbal tell a Sony A7III to take a timelapse when just the GH5 is supported. Or does a bluetooth connection do the trick? thanks!
