The pieces that allows a monopod, or smaller tripod, to be mounted on a to sturdy tripod is a Shape baseplate (don’t know the exact model) and two Manfrotto super clamps... plus a few extra nuts and bolts to secure everything together. What an amazing and engaging tutorial, thanks ever so much, Neil! - We've just started filming our weekly (non-public) church services, and I'm discovering more and more ingenious quality features of my good, old, and previously very rarely used for video Canon EOS 80D. I got the Ronin S yesterday, and after your video, I've just ordered the PZ-E1 (you've squeezed that one in between the camera and the Ronin, which made me go "yes!!!" when I saw it) and a decent tripod/monopod (Sirui KN1 Carbon + G-10KX) to beef things up a bit in comparison to our first try (which was just taken on my Note 10+) - you're a fantastic teacher, and your sense of humor (you must be CEO of Tripod-Artistry!) and enthusiasm for what you are doing are exemplary. VERY well-done, Sir!
This video is freaking incredible. I can tell how much work you put into this thank you. Also what tripod are you using. I think I would like to purchase it.

Great video! One request though, could you move your shot data up a little bit or place it on top of the video? Whenever I pause to see your settings, I can't see them through the RUclips media bar. Great stuff though!
Many thanks @Aerial Guide 👍 I'm hesitant to move the EXIF information bar any higher as it already takes away from the composition of a few shots. If you enable full screen mode on a desktop computer or mobile device it should be easier to view ... and admittedly, I mucked up with the scaling of the lower left watermark. 😐

Ooooo... very jealous of that 12' Kessler @Spotfire 😃 Not sure if you saw the most recent Ronin-S firmware upgrade that enables control via a PS4 or Xbox controller - I immediately thought of crane use 👍👍👍
Great video ! Cheers. bought mine a week ago and learning everything there is about the gimbal. You've mentioned all the lenses I have in my kit! Very excited!
Hahaha... thanks @HarvyDanger Films 😃 Just speculating, it's likely because the frequency that I upload isn't the same as most other RUclips channels. 😀
Love your style Neil ... a very good review and hoping to purchase for the Black Friday Sale. Where can I see more footage from other devices you have shot from? Thanks!
Thank you for the great review, honest, realistic and straight to the point in the field! Super helpful as I'm seeing what all the Ronin-S can do before I purchase
astonishing clips. I have the same setup beside the lens, I'm using 24-105mm f4, and I gotta say it's not just the camera and the Ronin S that gets you those clips you saw up there. I've been struggling to get shake free and smooth footage even after slowing things down. Neil is no beginner, there is more to it than just a gimbal and camera. One thing that caught my attention is how did you control the focus then? they are so on point and silky smooth.
Most thorough review I have seen of the Ronin S so far. Thanks for demonstrating multiple lenses on it. I have the Panasonic Lumix G9 and I use a couple of different lenses. Seeing that you mounted and balanced some pretty long and heavy lenses on it, I believe the Leica 100-400 telephoto zoom lens should work. I would just need to balance it while the zoom is half way between. I would like to experiment with some alfred Hitchcock effect filming as well as be able to zoom in and out while filming nature from a distance while maintaining smooth footage. It's too difficult to achieve that manually zooming by hand. Panasonic only makes one power zoom lens that only reach 140mm, I need more than that, which is why I'm considering purchasing the Ronin S as long as it's features would be fully or mostly compatible with the Panasonic Lumix G9.
Many thanks @David Domalain 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃 Unfortunately, I simply don't have time to offer any sort of workshop. That said, if you have any specific questions feel free to fire them off here - or for a more timely response bug me on Instagram @fisher604.
With our new Ronin S, we learned more from you than all of the other videos combined. Really excellent quality! If you can tell me, I'm using a Fujifilm XT20 mirrorless and seem to get a noticeable amount of horizontal shake, I'm new to this and am stumped, any idea why? The camera is totally balanced and all is functioning well but when I do my test videos, there's just a noticeable amount. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
@Atremin1 I've found that calibrating the Ronin-S via the mobile app does wonders for eliminating unwanted shake and vibration - that and ensuring the system is perfectly balanced. Hope this helps 😃
Nice presentation. Thanks for sharing valuable knowledge. I will follow instructions while operating same gimble I have. Good luck for your future videos.
Many thanks @000Rehage000 😃 Producing this single video took nearly two months - hard to squeeze the creation of RUclips videos in between working full time and raising children 😆 ... having said that, there are more video in the pipeline 👍 👍 👍
Thanks @alvin brown 😃 The lack of subscribers is without undoubtedly because of my low upload frequency - RUclips's algorithm want's creators creating crap often not quality seldom 😆😆😆
@neil fisher thank you so much for this review, I have the 7d m2 with 200l and it is so hard to find info on how the ronin s works with it. Finally someone had info! thank you! Im realizing that it really isn't that necessary for the soft ware to communicate with the canon. Its a luxury, but not a necessity.
Thanks @Gaizka Peñafiel 😃 This specific video was not shot in C-Lop, but I recently had the C-Log upgrade preformed on my Canon 5D mark IV and have been very happy with the resulting image quality of C-Log 👍👍👍
Great review One of the best ones iive seen yet Loved the footage Ive got a Ronin S with a BMPCC4K ....fantastic combo There is an add on display you can get now You also didnt mention you can power you camera from the gimbal too :) Hoping DJI supports my camera soon
Thanks @Jay Freeman 😃 I've had the opportunity to use the command unit and I still feel that it shouldn't be necessary. Having used the Zhiyun Crane 2 with its integrated LCD display - it just seems like something every 3-axis gimbal should have. I am aware that it's possible to charge cameras via the Ronin-S, provided the camera supports USB charging - which mine do not. I don't like making videos that simply list specifications of a product, because I was unable to try USB camera charging - I didn't want to provide thought on something I couldn't vouch for... if that makes sense. Thanks again. 👍
Thanks @Gregory A Campbell 👍 Yes, I disassemble the Ronin-S and place it above the ICU in my F-stop Tilopa. It's a tight fit, but it's the best way I can pack it. 😃
Neil, excellent video. I have used my buddy's Ronin with his BMPCC. But I recently purchased a Ronin S of my own, currently using with my 80D, soon my EOS R will arrive and will be using with my Ronin. Since I am still new to the Ronin, I have 2 questions 1) should I leave the on-camera mic (RODE NTG) off when using the Ronin or leave on... have done both ways but still have not decided which is best, what do you recommend? 2) BTW - Loving your "Franken-Jib" - where would be the best place to get the clamps you used to hold the Tri or Mono Pod?
@TechSavvyDadd leaving an on-camera shotgun microphone will only create unnecessary challenges when trying to balance the gimbal - it will move the camera system's center of gravity much higher than expected. The "Franken-Jib" uses two Manfrotto super clamps and a Shape Base plate - though ultimately the specific pieces don't matter. Any means that you can mount a mono-pod or tripod to a fluid will get the job done 👍👍👍
Terrific job. You've got a great camera presence and offer a lot of helpful content. I've got the Ronin S and completely agree about the locking option. There is another gimbal manufacturer that offers that feature (I think it may be the Zhiyun Crane?) and it would be a giant help to be able to lock everything down for transport. One of my challenges is using a zoom lens like the 16-35 and then wondering if I need to rebalance it if I change focal length. (The Ronin S's motors seem to handle the change, however with a 70-200, you'd really have to rebalance if you went from one end of the range to the other. The biggest problem for me though is figuring out how to balance the gimbal with an external mic like the Rode VideoMic Pro on top. You have to face the lens upward as part of the balancing and this is impossible to do with a mic on top. Any suggestions? Or do you not worry about getting good sync sound. As a one-man run and gunner, I'd really like to find a solution to this vexing problem.
@Tim Aldridge I haven't had the opportunity to use the Mozart Air 2, but on paper it certainly does look like a strong contender. Having said that, I heard some mixed first hand accounts of its usability: awkward companion app and less than intuitive controls. Could be worth renting prior to pulling the trigger.
Hey Neil, Amazing video and your samples were breathtaking. I wanted to ask, do you also only have a limit of two points when using the track mode in your ronin-s ? I do. ( I'm one of those people who spend a lot of time in front of their own camera.)
Thanks @Rana Napier 😃 I don't have the gimbal and open in front of me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that the Track mode is limited to 5 points just like the motion-lapse. Though I could be wrong?
Thanks @Fajr Interiors - Interior Design & Fitout, Dubai. 😃 If you're asking what camera system is used to capture this video? It's all shot on a Canon 5D mark IV and a number of Canon lenses 👍
thanks for the tip about turning off the motors! that will def come in handy for changing settings on the fly. How did you change the mode to be lock mode?
Thanks for the feedback @Johnny Roux - greatly appreciated. 😃😃😃 Setting up a profile to mimic the lock function really is super helpful - especially when mounted on a jib or other piece of kit.
Great video. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, but you did such a great job that I'm subscribing on the assumption that this won't always be the case. Well done.
wow just stumbled across your video here, quality work! I also noticed right away you have a different style (kinda getting burned out on everyone trying to mimic Peter Mckinnon, me being one of them ;)) I like how you show your settings at the bottom of the screen. I'm also curios that you shoot everything in 30fps verse what most "popular" RUclipsrs seem to all use 24fps. 30 fps definitely has a different look which is refreshing. Just curios what your thoughts are on 30fps vs 24fps cuz guys like Matti Haapoja say to NEVER shoot 30fps lol. I kinda like the hyper real look of 30fps for youtube type stuff though. I don't know now I'm rambling.
I honestly had to Google who Peter Mckinnon and Matti Haapoja are. The choice between 30fps and 24fps comes down to preference. I've worked in broadcast television for many years and at this point I prefer 30fps - it feels more lifelike and less as if you're "watching" something being played back. I assume others often chose 24fps because they've been told it's more "cinematic" and it's what movies are shot in - which is not always the case either.
Thanks for such a great video, Neil. I fit into the "stills photographer venturing into the videography world" category you mentioned. For the past couple of months since I bought my Nikon Z6 and Ronin S, my head has been spinning. I've watched countless RUclipsrs for both general videography tips as well as videos that are specific to my camera or my gimbal. I can count on one hand the videos that were so concise and so helpful, and yours is most certainly in that number. Thank you for your easy-to-understand way of communicating, and please keep up the good work!
Wow, massive thanks @Shane Hunter 👍 Really appreciate the kind words 😃😃😃 The Nikon Z6 sounds like a pretty solid little video shooter and a perfect match for the Ronin-S, I'm sure you'll be able to create some great footage with the combo 👍
@@neilfisher Thanks Neil! Yeah I've really loved it so far. It's really rejuvenated me as a photographer too. My insta is @couture_sr_photos. The last 3-4 videos on there were with the Z6/Ronin-S combo. If you wanna look at some Noob work haha. Thanks for the reply!
Well done sir, Thank you and really appreciate all the info that you gave us on this video. What would you say the timeframe would be of the learning curve? The sample shots shown on this video looked really amazing. Just curious on how long you've been using gimbals as well.
Many thanks @henrysitube 👍 Greatly appreciate the feedback. The time required to master the DJI Ronin-S is dependent on how much previous experience the operator has with other gimbals. The one-handed form factor is slightly different if you're used to a two hand system like the Ronin-M or Ronin-2. If you're a green gimbal operator and the Ronin-S is your first opportunity to learn - it does take quite a bit of time to learn how to walk smoothly and what shots are optimal for a gimbal. Personally, I've been using gimbals since Movi crashed the scene a number of years ago now. Hope this helps. 😃😃😃
Very nice video and love your footage. Could you explain how you mounted the 2nd tripod on the top of the Shape baseplate with two super clamps? Thanks in advance!
Thanks @chun sun 👍 The Shape base plate has two 3/8" on both the top and bottom, allowing for a tripod plate beneath and two Manfrotto super clamps up top. A beefy cheese plate would also suffice in place of the Shape base plate. Hope this makes sense 😃
Best Ronin-S review I have found and a great video, thank you. I'm new to gimbals and wonder how you cope with controlling focus and exposure when you're moving with the camera mounted on the gimbal. I'm assuming auto focus and maybe aperture priority? I've done some tests and am struggling with this, especially filming outdoors with changing light conditions.
@Granadilla Films I personally rely on a Tilta Nucleus Nano to pull focus. As for exposure, following the 180 degree shutter rule: your shutter speed/shutter angle shouldn't be changing during a shot... unless you're somehow changing frame speed. You could adjust the iris/aperture, but this would require another wireless device and a cinema lens with a de-clicked iris. Alternatively, leaving the shutter and iris unchanged - you could adjust the gain/iso... just as long as it's a smooth adjustment. Hope this rambling helps. 👍👍👍
Great video with good content and information, thank you ! Could you include a details of the Canon lenses that have worked well for you. Based on your video I'm awaiting my Ronin S, which I will use with my Canon 5D Miii.
@Craig Harper the Ronin-S won't play well with the older 5D mark III - and as for lenses, it seems anything released after 2016 works very well. Older lenses are really where trouble starts - and this shouldn't be overly surprising.
Man, I've seen many reviews of the Ronin... wish I had seen this one earlier!! Amazing explanation, footage, modes and phone integration, and beautiful dog! Thank you so much for the video! QUESTION: I have the 5d Mk IV as well... Should I just get the Ronin-S essentials kit since I don't see much benefit on using the focus wheel? I guess I could buy the command screen since I am saving about $240... The question is: do I need all the cables that the Ronin-S (regular, non-essentials kit) and the metal tripod?? Or, can I just get by with the plastic tripod and the one cable that the essentials kit comes with (considering I have the 5d Mk IV)? Any insight would be helpful! Thanks again
Firstly thanks for the kind words @Jordi Sanchis-Sanchez 😃The cables and small metal tripod included in the regular kit are nice to have, but to this day the focus wheel remains un-used. I've gone with the Tilta Nucleus Nano, which works wonderfully with the Ronin-S. Hope this helps 👍👍👍
wow..Neil..great review...I have a EOS R and 5DMIII shall i go ahead and buy it...i loved your review....do you recommend buying with or without the Focus option that is about 250 USD less...
@lal nallath with the strong auto focus of the R - going without the focus wheel would be my choice. I personally use a Tilta Nucleus Nano and I works perfectly on the DJI Ronin-S. 👍👍👍

Ooooo... very jealous of that 12' Kessler @Spotfire 😃 Not sure if you saw the most recent Ronin-S firmware upgrade that enables control via a PS4 or Xbox controller - I immediately thought of crane use 👍👍👍
@@neilfisher Thanks! I'll look into that.
Best review there is out there,
Was enjoyable to watch, really relaxing, not so hyper like all other youtubers
Thnx for all the info!
Hahaha... @Alon 'hyper' is a pretty accurate description. Glad you enjoy it. 😃😃😃
Great video ! Cheers. bought mine a week ago and learning everything there is about the gimbal. You've mentioned all the lenses I have in my kit! Very excited!
Many thanks @Stef van Vuuren 👍 It's a great piece of kit and I'm sure you'll be able to create some great content with it 😃😃😃
Just picked up my Ronin S, appreciate your work Neil, great tips. Look forward to using it around Sydney.
Thanks @Escape Scenes 👍 Good timing on pulling the trigger - the new firmware really takes the Ronin-S up a notch 😃😃😃
Great review Neil! Just got a Ronin S and your review was very useful and gave me a lot to think about in my creative endeavors! Thank you.
Thanks @J. DONOVAN SMITH 😃 You grab one at just the right time too - great to see DJI update its firmware to add a few features from the Ronin-SC 👍👍👍
Your tutorial was really thorough and well illustrated!! Thank you!!
Many thanks @Jerry Eisner 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃
Wow. This was incredible. How have I not found you Channel before now? How have tens of thousands of us not found your channel!?
Hahaha... thanks @HarvyDanger Films 😃 Just speculating, it's likely because the frequency that I upload isn't the same as most other RUclips channels. 😀
Love your style Neil ... a very good review and hoping to purchase for the Black Friday Sale. Where can I see more footage from other devices you have shot from? Thanks!
Many thanks @BLU IGUANA CINEMA 😃 RUclips is the only platform I share personal work.
Hey i just saw you reached 10k
Congrats man keep making those awesome videos we miss you
Many thanks @Orange Orange 😃 There certainly are more videos in the pipeline... they just take quite a bit of time to produce 👍
agree with some of the other posters. Great video! Great review! Please make more. I will watch!
Many thanks @Bobby James 😃 I appreciate the feedback. 👍👍👍
This feels like a preview/how to rather than a review. But the video was really well made and professional.
Thanks @Mediebyg 👍👍👍 Admittedly it does cover many of the basic features of the Ronin-S, but I do share my thoughts thoroughly throughout 😃
This is the best ronin s review video on RUclips! Great job.
Many thanks @TréCreative 😃 Really appreciate the feedback. 👍👍👍
Well done! Great explanations and examples, wonderful footage. Keep up the good work, and thank you!
Thanks @Kyle Hislip Studio 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
This video is so great, this is the best review of any kind I have seen. Keep on!
Many thanks @Alfonso Iannuzzelli 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃
This video sold me the Ronin S, literally! Thanx man, great job. I'm very happy with my Ronin!
Thanks @Gabriel Ortiz 👍 Happy to hear it help in your decision making - it certainly is a great piece of kit 😃😃😃
The video is soo engaging
I saw the full video

A great informative video. Very pleasant to watch indeed. Sound and background music/ ambient sounds are very good. Keep up the good work!
Many thanks @wing chow - nice to know people actually notice the small details of a video. 😃😃😃
Thank you for the great review, honest, realistic and straight to the point in the field! Super helpful as I'm seeing what all the Ronin-S can do before I purchase
Thanks @Maya's Lens 👍 Glad to hear you found it helpful. 😃😃😃
astonishing clips.
Thank so much @Sina Nikkhah I've been pulling focus with the Tilta Nucleus Nano, which has been working beautifully.
Great overall video man, love the footage inbetween .
Thanks @Brendan Albert 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍
I don’t leave comments, like at all. This video was very informative and well put together! Thanks!!
Ha... @Austin Parks I totally feel you 😆 Although I create content - I too rarely actually comment on anything. Thanks for the kinds words 😃😃😃
So nice to see such a knowledgeable person just up the road! Do you do any workshops for beginners?
Many thanks @David Domalain 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃 Unfortunately, I simply don't have time to offer any sort of workshop. That said, if you have any specific questions feel free to fire them off here - or for a more timely response bug me on Instagram @fisher604.
@@neilfisher Will do!
Thank you Neil for this review. By far the best review that I found on RUclips :-) You've earned a new subscriber haha!
Thanks so much @Smoppy Adventures 😃😃😃😃 Appreciate the sub, but fair warning that my upload frequency is usually once every coupe of months. 😝
Nice presentation. Thanks for sharing valuable knowledge. I will follow instructions while operating same gimble I have. Good luck for your future videos.
Thanks @vishweshwarkandalgaonkar4620 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you found it helpful👍👍👍
Dude this production is crazy good
Thanks so much @Giovani Camara 👍 Really appreciate the kind words 😃😃😃
Great review, Excellent content, great delivery. Please make more!
Many thanks @000Rehage000 😃 Producing this single video took nearly two months - hard to squeeze the creation of RUclips videos in between working full time and raising children 😆 ... having said that, there are more video in the pipeline 👍 👍 👍
After watching this video, I find it astonishing that this channel only has 7k subscribers.
Thanks @alvin brown 😃 The lack of subscribers is without undoubtedly because of my low upload frequency - RUclips's algorithm want's creators creating crap often not quality seldom 😆😆😆
I only want to thank you for your review. Nicely done!
Thanks so much @cristirenault 👍👍👍
Really.. this is fantastic content. What a sollid video Neil, keep it up this is really good. 10/10
Thanks so much @meziens15. 😃😃😃
Thanks so much @brandi kaufmann 👍 Very much appreciate the feedback 😃😃😃
Great video Neil, the best review I have seen. Do you shoot in C-Log? The image looks great.
Thanks @Gaizka Peñafiel 😃 This specific video was not shot in C-Lop, but I recently had the C-Log upgrade preformed on my Canon 5D mark IV and have been very happy with the resulting image quality of C-Log 👍👍👍
Awesome video!! Just one question, what equipment did you use for audio recording??
Thanks @Ale Music 😃 I used a Lavalier GO into a Zoom H4n - not the best audio kit, but it does the trick 👍👍👍
neil fisher sounds great!! Thank you!!😃😃
Great review
One of the best ones iive seen yet
Loved the footage
Ive got a Ronin S with a BMPCC4K ....fantastic combo
There is an add on display you can get now
You also didnt mention you can power you camera from the gimbal too :)
Hoping DJI supports my camera soon
Thanks for making your videos. Do you take they Ronin-S in your camera backpack or carry it separately?
@@neilfisher Thank you for your response.
Excellent video Neil, best I have seen, have you tried the Mozo air 2 , I need to get one or the other but cannot decide which just on the specs
@@neilfisher Thanks Neil, if I rent one I will let you know what I feel
I love the matte look of the final footage. How did you color grade it?
Thanks @BreakneckWalrus 👍 I only use basic curves and colour wheels for grading 😃😃😃
Great review! And I agree that the slow motion should mostly be used in specific scenarios.
Many thanks @Cui Yepu - glad to hear others feel the same way about slow motion. 👍
Great content Neil.... thanks for the time and effort you put into this tutorial.
Many thanks @Bruce Williams Studio 😃😃😃
One of the better reviews out there.
Thanks @Frank Pontier 👍 Really appreciate the kind words 😃😃😃
Hey Neil, Amazing video and your samples were breathtaking. I wanted to ask, do you also only have a limit of two points when using the track mode in your ronin-s ? I do. ( I'm one of those people who spend a lot of time in front of their own camera.)
Thanks @Rana Napier 😃 I don't have the gimbal and open in front of me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that the Track mode is limited to 5 points just like the motion-lapse. Though I could be wrong?
@@neilfisher thanks for the response. I only have 2 track points and the icon to add more nodes is greyed out.
fantastic guy
Whats your setup in this video?
Thanks @Fajr Interiors - Interior Design & Fitout, Dubai. 😃 If you're asking what camera system is used to capture this video? It's all shot on a Canon 5D mark IV and a number of Canon lenses 👍
Awesome video, look forward to seeing more!
Thanks @Alli and Will. 👍👍👍
Neil, you have great talent. Keep going, you have a lot of support. Subd.
Many thanks @Andrew Baharom 😃 Appreciate the feedback. 👍👍👍
thanks for the tip about turning off the motors! that will def come in handy for changing settings on the fly. How did you change the mode to be lock mode?
just read your response to another comment. thank you!
Thanks for the feedback @Johnny Roux - greatly appreciated. 😃😃😃 Setting up a profile to mimic the lock function really is super helpful - especially when mounted on a jib or other piece of kit.
This was exactly what I needed. A thousand thanks !
Many thanks @Putthatinur Pipe 😃 Very much appreciate the feedback 👍👍👍
Great video. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, but you did such a great job that I'm subscribing on the assumption that this won't always be the case. Well done.
Thanks so much @Warren Harrison 👍 Admittedly, I don't upload too frequently, but hopefully that will change soon. 😃
wow just stumbled across your video here, quality work!
Brilliant video, having just got the ronin s this has helped so much, thank you 👍👍
Thanks @devon_rjh_photography 👍 Happy to hear you found this helpful 😃😃😃
Quite not sure why you have got very few subscribers, your content is just great.
Many thanks @Maverix Obscura 😃😃😃 Admittedly, I don't upload very frequently. 🤔
Great video and review! Entertaining and insightful.Thank you! I know you'll have a great run on youtube.
Many thanks @auyabbaby 👍 Appreciate the feedback and happy to hear you enjoyed it. 😃😃😃
@@neilfisher can't wait to see your future work. Keep it up 👍🏻
Very nice video and love your footage.
@@neilfisher Thanks very much!:)
2months ago got to trio up my Ronin S with the Dji focus wheel motor and BAMMM AWESOMENESS
Great to it works so well @VISION0STUDIO 😃
Hope this helps 👍👍👍
neil fisher thank you! I appreciate your time and response
wow..Neil..great review...I have a EOS R and 5DMIII shall i go ahead and buy it...i loved your review....do you recommend buying with or without the Focus option that is about 250 USD less...
@lal nallath with the strong auto focus of the R - going without the focus wheel would be my choice. I personally use a Tilta Nucleus Nano and I works perfectly on the DJI Ronin-S. 👍👍👍
