Once you take it places, where do you keep it when you're not using. How do you keep your gear safe. Let's say you're at a networking event but need a break to chat with people. Where do most people store their gear? What kind of bag can I just dump the gimbal in or could it break?
Would be cool if they made a handle that would bypass the small joystick and make it possible to carry it like a "suitcase" to ease the fatigue you get when carrying this gimbal. Just got mine and went out for a 2 hour walk with a Canon 80D and a 18-135 lense on it. Not that big of a payload BUT definitely noticeable after a while which leaves you to constantly shifting hands in order not to tire down. a modular "suitcase" handle would easily fix this which would allow to fit brackets of any type for accessories. Take a look at the Crane Lab 3 i think it's called which currently is in a prototype state but it is heading the right way. One thing i'd really want them to fix is when it goes absolutely crazy when you accidently put the Ronin-s in a weird angle. Experienced this the first day of use (Recently at New Years Eve) and could easily be fixed with an update to the firmware.
legendp2011 Those micro jitters you saw were probably from when I shot. It was literally my first time using a gimbal. Don’t let that sway your opinion of it just yet.
+Connor McCaskill .......fair enough.......... but it's not just your video with jitters, most videos I see of the ronin (and other cheaper gimbals like zhuiyn) have micro-jiters, perhaps it's just the fact that most reviews are made before the operators become accustomed to using them (or they walk to fast with them?).............however the majority of MOVI videos I have seen don't have jitter issue (glidecam/steadicam also are jitter free most the time), but that could also be that movi operators are just more experienced. then again if most people watching don't notice the jitters perhaps it doesn't matter (I can be nit picky, and am still curious about single hand use gimbals, the official dji video looks good, but they always maintain a slow walk speed)
You are correct, this video is a horrible way to judge the Ronin-S. Every one of their shots had jitters but this is likely due to improper balance as the motors are clearly working too hard. So that, and cam op inexperience with proper walking/moving technique is really hurting this video.
Great Review! My Ronin-S is on its way and I came across the Glide Gear DNA-6000 which seems to support the Ronin-S and its only $399. Not too shabby and I wonder if that's going to make the difference for camera ops who do a ton of run and gun.
The older style gimbal is only good if you want to capture video of someones waist. That's my number 1 complaint about using that style, you have to lift it so high just to get it to eye level. So for larger crews or smaller crews the ronin s is going to be better 99% of the time.
Oh ok! Well for cost, the smaller cheaper gimbals will do the trick. But the Ronin-S seems to have better stabilization and will give you an opportunity to grow with your gimbal when you get a new camera.
So you don't recommend buying it now if I'm using a Canon? or the new features like the focus wheel will come out as accessories that I can buy later, and not built-in features? hope you got my point lol.. thanks for the video!
Its neat but they may have missed the boat on this one. Its late to come out, behind in working features, no accessories yet, heavier than every other pistol gimbal, baseplate slightly too wide to be manfrotto compatable and the batteries are hard-wired into the handle so you cannot replace if there is an issue or no charging capabilities. Not good to go out of the box like Crane 2 either. Definitely takes some time and manual research to turn it on and get it to work. Zhiyun has plenty of time to scoop up all of the working operators with an IN STOCK ;) fully equipped lightweight system w/follow focus in the meantime. No sensible operator is flying 7-8lbs on a pistol grip gimbal because other form factors would be a much more comfortable choice for those weights anyway. Lets see whats competing next year when all the accessories finally come out and are done with the DJI backorder phase.
I’m going to agree on the cons you listed, but disagree on missing the boat. The Z crane was too early if anything. The ronin-s line will be the main gimbal being used for the next three years I’m almost sure of it. The thing that mostly makes it stand out is it’s software. It’s using the exact same algorithms as the Ronin 2 which is their flagship gimbal being used in Hollywood day to day. The smoothness of the ronin-s is unlike the z crane system. Ronin-s is built around DJI’s propriety chipset.
Kinotika Someone like me, a DP, would be averse to the Ronin needing software and tuning to set up (after tuning gimbals for the past 3 years). Low priced rigs like these.. I want my operators to mount, turn it on and go. Basecam tunings and the likes with DJI’s stuff and running through autotuning hasn’t ever been necessary on our Crane 2’s. Also it’s all in stock here and working. By the time the full accessory kits and updates to the firmware to get it to work with the rest of the cameras is out...who knows what will be available. Stuff like this is relevant for about 12 -18 months before it is outdone. DJI always has backorder fulfillment issues in the US. The software I use doesn’t have an effect on me, its more of a question of How much time does it require throughout the course of lens changes and camera resets. Manfrotto plate issue needs to be addressed before anything in my opinion.

Just crop in post. Intagram inly displays 481x599.484 pixels for vertical video. It’s still going to be tagged as horizontal so you will still have to edit the image to rotate it either way.

Hi - I have question about transporting, carrying the Ronin-S in a day of travel. How do you transport it from one location to another? Like when you are getting lost in a city, I don’t want to assemble it again all the time but take it with me during the day like i do it with a gorillapod. So I am wondering that when do you assemble it or do you just leave the camera on it, turn the gimbal off and just carry it? If so, is it safe? thx, p
No i mean; i have an external microfone (rhode videomic go) and that has a wire that goes into the right of my lumix camera. But when i have the wire in the mic and camera, does the Ronin still have enough space to move around (not touching the camera or the wire of the mic)?

Thanks. I was thinking since it has a 1/4" female thread at the bottom (where the mini tripod attaches), someone could make a 1/4" male to a measured diameter to fit in the arm pole of the vest. It would be neat if a company made this, but honestly I think I could just go to my local machine shop and they could make an adapter.
Ya totally! This gimbal is a bit big for that camera, but its the best handheld gimbal available so it's worth it to carry around this bigger system for that camera.

I need and HDMI-microHDMI to plug the Atomos Ninja V to an A7iii, and the current coiled cable I have is making the Feiyutech a1000 suffer. I just got one and am trying to figure it out. You mentioned in the video that you could get the Record Stop/Start to work with a Canon. How is that? I have a 6D MK II I've put on it, but there isn't a cable that came with the system that works in any port on that camera. So...how is it controlled? Would the correct cable (and software update from DJI) then allow the focus wheel to work?

You guys really should try to explain why (in the video) things look bad or don't use the footage. Show proper footage with it balanced right and a GOOD operator otherwise you really need to tell people IN THE VIDEO (NOT THE COMMENTS) that this is someone's first time. And yet, I've seen people pick this is for the first time and get butter smooth shots so I think your main issue is improper balance.

You can still use it with a canon but you just won’t have any controls other than record start stop. Buttttttt in the future this will change.

Exactly. Honestly, THAT is the setup that needs to happen. It makes the most sense and would get out all the footsteps.

I’m new to gimbals and after watching your video I have found out that the Ronin S would be suitable for me .My question is there are lots of different gimbals on the market what makes you so sure this is the best one.
What camera is compatible with is gimbal.

Most gimbals struggle with the software and firmware. DJI and Freefly are really the only companies with good software.
And the cams compatible are.
I just got one and am trying to figure it out. You mentioned in the video that you could get the Record Stop/Start to work with a Canon. How is that? I have a 6D MK II I've put on it, but there isn't a cable that came with the system that works in any port on that camera. So...how is it controlled? Would the correct cable (and software update from DJI) then allow the focus wheel to work?
Really good review man. I have a Canon 80D, Can the Ronin S follow me if I mounted it on a tripod and walked back an forth? Does it have that feature?

You guys really should try to explain why (in the video) things look bad or don't use the footage. Show proper footage with it balanced right and a GOOD operator otherwise you really need to tell people IN THE VIDEO (NOT THE COMMENTS) that this is someone's first time.
And yet, I've seen people pick this is for the first time and get butter smooth shots so I think your main issue is improper balance.
Have they added the focus for Canon and Sony?

Im not sure if you can at the same time, but you can use one to charge it using USB-C for sure .
