Plums and nectarines are types of stone fruit along with apricots and peaches. The skin of plums and nectarines are smooth. These fruits are perfect to enjoy during the summer months as a snack or in a fruit salad.
When buying plums and nectarines, look for fruit that is slightly soft to the touch without any visible soft spots. Let your kids feel how smooth the skins are. Plums might have a natural white, waxy coating on the skin.
Store ripe plums and nectarines in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. If the fruit is not fully ripe, keep them in a paper bag and leave on the countertop. Check them daily to see if they have softened.
Wash plums and nectarines under running water and gently rub them with your hands.
If you want to cut them in slices or pieces, cut in half by running a knife along the creases around the seed in the center. Separate the halves by twisting them. Some seeds come out easily by hand, but sometimes they need to be cut out. Place the fruit face side down on the cutting board and slice.
