I feel the same way about mine. The "zaratsu" polish seems to pick up scratches everywhere and even the smallest hairline scratch is so highly visible it's so annoying. I tend not to wear it in fear of getting it scratched up, and I've never felt that way before even with other expensive luxury watches. I don't care if my Breitling gets scratched up for some reason. I guess the Jeep vs. Tesla analogy is pretty much spot on.
I have learned to live with it myself in the meantime, still a bit anxious though when I wear the watch. ;-) Btw, am on the waitlist for a Milgauss, probably will have the same problem with that watch as well (if I ever get the opportunity to purchase it…).
When I put down my name for one three months ago, the official wait time was three months, now it is 1-2 years…. Not counting on getting one anytime soon. ;-)
I love it haha. Funny. True. Unapologetically you. Thanks for your perspective. I can wear it and knock it around all day. It goes to show that we are all one. But we also, share many differences.
I’m thinking all watches are gonna get scratched, having said that a GS is not a beater watch, just like the seadweller never sees the bottom of the ocean and that’s a tool watch. Maybe you should’ve gotten an SZSB for 300.00
A much underrated video! Eloquent, concise and very much to be admired. Better close-ups of the watch in question would help the overall quality but I for one appreciate your considered and we'll expressed opinion.
If everyone is so OCD about scratches, go with the 2nd hand GS. I bought the GS because 1. Spring Drive -> very smooth movement or Hi-Beat 36000 BPH which is very smooth as well 2. The finishing so neat, and the light reflecting very well compared with the same price with other swiss watches 3. Hard to replicate
This video is the perfect argument for only buying watches that are within your budget. Not what you can just afford, but what you are willing and able to throw away if needs be. Watches are meant to be worn and unless you are in it purely for the investment/resale, buy what you love within your income bracket. Formula: expendable monthly income after bills = your watch budget.
Your argument doesn't make any sense. A Tesla isn't meant to do what a Jeep does and neither is it meant to. Roughly they serve the same purpose but in very different ways. You wouldn't treat a calatrava or cellini like you would treat a sub. I don't really see your point. Are you saying a GS is too nice to wear everyday? How is that a bad thing?
Hi Aray, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! You are of course right, my argument doesn‘t entirely make sense. That’s in part because rants simply aren‘t designed to deliver well-structured, cogent arguments. They first and foremost vent *emotions*, which by their nature are scarcely thoroughly rational. As to the Cellinis and Calatravas you mentioned - I agree, one shouldn‘t expect them to do well at diving or rock-climbing, just as one wouldn‘t expect a dolphin to excel at tap dancing. I‘m not sure, however, whether I would compare my GS to those dainty dress watches. Its considerable proportions (it wears as large as my Tudor Pelagos) and steel construction look sporty to me, at most I would consider it a sporty dress watch. With that comes the expectation of it - not necessarily being able to take a beating - but to withstand reasonable everyday use. Anyway, appreciate your comment! :)
@@watchesinthewild8276 using your analogy, the form is still irrelevant. I would certainly hate to see a new range rover get scratches if I was driving it around Chelsea/LA all day. That said could it take a beating and get all scratched up? Of course, it just wouldn't look as nice anymore. Anyway.....Luckily you can just send the watch back to GS and get it black polished again for 300 bucks.
@@plusgood15 Hi Aray, thanks for the follow-up comment. You can indeed send it back to GS in such a case, but the shipping charge alone will cost you half of what you quoted. Add to that a hefty 800 dollars if you just want to re-polish the watch case (regardless of the model) or 950 with the bracelet included.
That is what it is to own a Grand Seiko. Imagine owners of high end Patek Philipe. They cant even breathe without fearing damage to their half million $$ wristwatch.
I got the Skyflake, and I had to agree with your rant 100%, my watch is basically zaratsu polished on almost every part of the case. It actually made me think of getting another Grand Seiko watch but not wear it as much 😂 I actually went to a boutique about it to discuss, but even with the line scratches (from like the wind or atmosphere), it still looks pretty good when you put them next to Pateks, Vacherons or Langes for example. But what I learned about the watch is that nothing in this world is perfect, and a perfect watch doesn't exist. (Also, it's possible to send them to Seiko to be zaratsu polished again) 🙂
Sorry to hear that your Skyflake got scratched up too! As you said the fully zaratsu polished case makes not scratching it almost impossible. At least now - that a few imperfections are already present - the next scratches won‘t hurt as much. Thanks for your feedback and I am glad that you enjoyed the video!
Grand Seiko is like Bitcoin. Just as Bitcoin will demonetize other assets, Grand Seiko will dethrone other watch brands and it will be the new Rolex. Except not. Better.
Not sure these people have all tried out one themselves. While mine doesn‘t feel like a modern Rolex Oyster bracelet, it‘s perfectly adequate. And I adore the rounded polish on the edge of the outer links.
I suspect more than a few critics of this video have never owned a GS themselves. Still holding on to mine though, despite the anxiety it causes me ;-)
Stay away from watches mate.. If you afraid to not scratch them you ve really got a problem and clearly this “sport” is not for you. The meaning is to wear whatever you like, be happy and live your life. You must adore GS for the level of craftsmanship and be happy that you can buy one. There are a lot of people that can not buy one. You missing the point of wearing a legend of horology here I think.. After all what is the bond between you and your watch? What wil remind you all these memories that you ve been experience? The scratches!! The only thing that would hold me back from wearing a watch like this, is if I would like to sell it back in some point. Even this is not completely accurate if you see the auctions history.
Thanks for your detailed comment! As you point out, the cost of the watch might have to do something with my frustration. I wouldn‘t be as upset or worried if it cost very little. However, I have no trouble accepting the scratches on my Tudor Pelagos which costs about the same but seems to look better - not worse - the more scratched and banged-up it gets. The GS is another story, scratches really detract from its beauty. But rest assured that I wear it nevertheless. As you say it is a little wonder of horology and should be used rather than be babied or locked away. Alas that means scratches, but I try to deal with it.
I think exactly the same. The difference between GS and other watches is that, the “perfect finish” is the biggest charm of a GS. If it is all scratched up, it loses a big portion of its charm. In other words, it won’t age well. Watches like speedmaster or submariner looks awesome with lots of scratches on, tons of pictures online showing off the characters added on to those. But try finding a beaten up GS? I’ve never seen one… Good point, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Robin, for watching and for your lengthy comment! A scratched-up GS really is a sad sight to behold whereas my Tudor Pelagos, for instance, almost looks better with every scratch. Still can recommend GS though if you are buying a watch from them as part of a bigger rotation.
there is a partial solution. put it on a really nice custom made leather. that's what I did for my sbgj237... it actually looks very nice on a strap and it does stand out a lot more if you chose the right color combo. yeah it's not a perfect solution, as you dont protect the watch itself, but just be a bit more careful when swinging your hand you can wear it on a daily basis without much problems. it's a luxury watch tho, dont hike with it...
It came with a nice leather strap so I should definitely try that out! Thanks for taking the time to comment :) Oh and the Sbgj237 is an amazing watch…
I agree with you 💯 percent. I have a GS SBGH051 and it’s so perfect I’m afraid to wear it, being there’s supposedly only 35 of ‘em makes it even more horrific awaiting that first scratch and or ding. Thus it remains in the safe, probably not GS’s intent. It’s imperfect for its perfection. Cheers.
the title should be. why you shouldn't buy a watch you can't afford. your point is true for many watch brands, not just grand seiko. i mean, what you owned a $100,000 patek? would you even wear it once? or would it stay in a safe? at this point, there is no reason to own a watch you're afraid to handle.
As you say, price has something to do with it. I think I would be less nervous about wearing the watch if it was one tenth the price. Having said that, I don‘t feel nearly as nervous wearing for example my Tudor Pelagos, even though it‘s priced about the same (got a good discount for the GS ;-)).
Great story illustrating the law of diminishing returns. I really enjoyed this. Just wear it and enjoy it and accept the way the world is. Great entertainment thankyou.
Thanks Keith! Even though some people seem to take my comments rather seriously they are meant to entertain, first and foremost. Needless to say, there are much more serious issues than us watch lovers freaking out about scratches. ;-) I now wear the GS on a regular basis, believe it or not, it‘s too beautiful to sit in a case all day long.
@@watchesinthewild8276 I'm glad you wear it and enjoy it. Superb review great creativity in terms of descriptive language. Definitely different to the average watch review and much the better for it. Well done and thanks again
Fair point! As you say, it‘s nice to know that GS can refinish the case (it isn’t cheap however and you have to send it back to Japan). I force myself to wear mine on a regular basis despite the risk - it just sitting somewhere in a safe would be rather sad. Do you happen to own any watches from GS yourself?
Thank you Ken! I figured there are already enough videos raving about GS out there, so I tried to provide somewhat of a counterpoint to that (precisely because I‘m in love with the brand).
@@watchesinthewild8276 gs is so high quality. Even quartz watches are a good take on luxury watch for like 3000 less than mechanical equivalent grand seiko and with a finish that most brands can’t afford for a lot more money, and with more accuracy in respect with quartz mouvement (a very beautiful quartz mouvement). I regret that luxury brands don’t provide good quartz watches especially with complications not possible with mechanical or too expensive or for ease of use like perpetual calendar combined with moonphase that are a mess to set up each time a mechanical watch stops.
@@carlito1777 Hi Carlos, I agree that the quality of GS is extremely high when compared to other brands in the same price bracket. And you are right, their quartz watches are a very attractive proposition. For some reason, watch enthusiasts seem to assume that all quartz watches are the same. But of course there are vast difference in quality when it comes to quartz as well, and the GS quartz movement is very high quality - and looks better than many mechanical movements.
I kinda see what you’re saying. Especially for a daily driver. That’s the reason I didn’t get a GS as my daily watch, I got an SLA055. No bracelet to prang up, but just enough zaratsu there for that shine, and a ceramic bezel to hopefully soak up the knocks 😂😂. I thought it was a good compromise.
Teslas have easily the worst paint/finish quality of any major international car manufacturer out there, so I would probably rethink that analogy. It’s embarrassingly bad for what they charge.
Entertaining video! Doesn’t deserve the hate it’s getting. I would love to own a Grand Seiko, even though it’s outside of my budget. I can truly appreciate the craftsmanship and beauty. You make a good point about scratching though. I was envisioning saving up for a Snowflake and wearing it every day for as long as it runs. But I’m a perfectionist and could see myself be bothered with getting scratches on it, especially because it’s something I can’t really afford.
Hi and thanks for your surprisingly positive feedback - I don‘t get a lot of those underneath this specific video (my others are rather uncontroversial it seems). Everybody criticizes GS at their own peril, I guess ;-) As to your own situation, I would be hesitant about buying a watch you cannot truly afford, it would likely be a constant source of stress, especially if it‘s a scratch-prone one. Maybe save up for a cool Seiko diver first and go for the Snowflake a bit later? (The Snowflake is spectacular in person, have a little video about it as well)
Fantastic video! I couldn't agree more, and I feel the same way about my SBGA387. I'm so glad you commented on my video so that I could find your channel. Subbed!
Amazing, and good to know that I’m not the only one (perhaps overly) concerned about scratches. Congrats btw, the SBGA387 is easily among my all-time favorite Grand Seikos! Needless to say, I subbed to your channel as well :)
Great video, and valid points. That Jeep is like an old Rolex Submariner. By design, it makes the scratches actually look cool. I just wonder what these perfect watches will look like after 20 years of use.
Thanks for watching, Brandon! It’s interesting that you bring up Rolex which has a legit background as a manufacturer of tool watches. Some of that still shows today, although their current watches are far removed from traditional tools of course. GS doesn’t have that same heritage, as far as I am aware. With their divers being a relatively recent introduction - the first dates from 2008 - they are not used to producing watches designed to withstand tough use (of course there is the Seiko heritage, but GS always wanted to set itself apart from Seiko). No wonder then that most of their watches appear to be a little less practical in comparison. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Consider subscribing if you wanna support the channel :)
Your GS is the one I wanted, but I couldn't find a new one. I recently looked at the blue snowflake, green GMT, and Godzilla. I liked the Godzilla best, but not at its price. GS needs to figure out it's pricing structure. As for the other two, I found them underwhelming.
Oh… the SBGA435 is indeed worth lusting after, that dial is something else - especially when looking at it NOT in direct sunlight, interestingly. Big fan of the SBGA433 too. I think you get at lot for your money with all three, but the Godzilla is a little pricey for my liking as are literally all of their precious metal models.
It's a double edge sword my friend. The hardened case = when it finally give in to scratch you won't be able to repolish or refinish it unless you send it back to the manufacturer. But the scratch on zaratsu polishing can be repolish if you know a good watch polish service. Sorry for bad English
FYI. Your worrying about scratching a Tesla? One of the worst put together cars in the world? Don'y belive me? Check you panel gaps and take a close look at your paint. 😅 If that was a joke you where making I apologize. 😅 Otherwise Teslas get a bit overhyped. They do somethings right but they also do somethings very wrong. My cousin has one and they have tried 4 times to fix his back door that gets stuck all the time. I think he has a warped or bad welded back quarter panel but the tesla guy keeps saying he just needs to shim it right.....yeah right.😅
Your comments make me very hesitant about buying a Tesla. ;-) At least they are pushing the envelope when it comes to battery technology and electric cars in general.
@@watchesinthewild8276 I will be getting a GS in a month or so (the pink-dialed, cherry blossom 413 US-only model) and am debating whether I will use my tools to adjust the bracelet myself. It's a Chinese tool kit, EXCEPT for two swell Swiss spring bar adjustment tools that I added after the Chinese tools quickly broke. I will contact GS about the relative hardness of chromed brass, stainless, and their titanium alloy. I don't want to scratch anything.
@@skzion2 Congrats, a wonderful choice! I love the unconventional case shape of those US models and of course their intricate dial texture which very much resembles mine. As to adjusting the bracelet, I wouldn‘t dare touching it myself, but in case you must I keep my fingers crossed for you.

@@Aladdin139 I wouldn‘t put it quite that strongly, but I agree that most of their watches (except all the precious metal ones) offer outstanding value for money. Do you own any GS yourself?
I have. I was really looking to love them, but I was disappointed when I checked them out. An authorized dealer started carrying the entire line about a year ago, so my best friend and I went and checked them out. We both were let down. Honestly, the designs felt like I was looking at a Citizen watch at Kohl’s. They all felt plain Jane, little creativity, and the high polishing wasn’t anything special like I’ve read. Neither of us even noticed, honestly. I wish I felt different, but that was the result of trying on probably half a dozen of the “best” ones I could find and looking over maybe 30+. They just did absolutely nothing for me.
@@ShawnL61189 Even though I wouldn‘t put it quite that harshly, I agree that their polish - while being top-notch - doesn‘t look much better than say a Rolex. (I would argue however that their case shapes are usually more complex than Rolex. This model has a slight downward bent to its curvature which is hard to achieve). And you are right that some Grand Seikos can feel uninspired from a design standpoint. Here I would - again - claim that Rolex does a better job, having designed a handful truly iconic timepieces. (I absolutely LOVE the design of some of their vintage pieces though, for instance the 6146-8020.) In terms of quality of finish on the dial (polish of hands and indices and other dial details) I have to give it to GS though. Needless to say, it’s not at all a tragedy if you don‘t get what some would consider the hype around GS. There are many other watch brands which are just as praiseworthy.
@@watchesinthewild8276 I appreciate those points! I’ve never argued that GS lacked quality, but “uninspiring” is definitely a good descriptor for how I feel about them.

1. Spring Drive -> very smooth movement or Hi-Beat 36000 BPH which is very smooth as well
2. The finishing so neat, and the light reflecting very well compared with the same price with other swiss watches
Ar least it is the perfect argument for SOMETHING then. ;-) Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Come on man, that’s why there are “beater” watch. I’m not going to work with my Speedmaster or even with my limited Astron.. I wish I could get a GS 🙏
You should someday! It‘s a fantastic product, but it will get scratched by you even looking at it the wrong way.
@@watchesinthewild8276
That’s funny 😁
Sounds terrible. You should sell it to me for a great price so you won't have to deal with the agony.
Haha poor me, I know... You are into GS as well?
I got the Skyflake, and I had to agree with your rant 100%, my watch is basically zaratsu polished on almost every part of the case. It actually made me think of getting another Grand Seiko watch but not wear it as much 😂
I actually went to a boutique about it to discuss, but even with the line scratches (from like the wind or atmosphere), it still looks pretty good when you put them next to Pateks, Vacherons or Langes for example.
So will they polish free of charge?? In guarantee period. But they should do it
I've a grand seiko and that's my only luxury watch. I daily drive a Seiko diver watch and only wear my grand seiko on special occasions.
Grand Seiko is like Bitcoin. Just as Bitcoin will demonetize other assets, Grand Seiko will dethrone other watch brands and it will be the new Rolex. Except not. Better.
You are sure you’re not talking about the apple watch? ;-)
The usual knock on GS is their bracelets. Some say they are underwhelming.
Not sure these people have all tried out one themselves. While mine doesn‘t feel like a modern Rolex Oyster bracelet, it‘s perfectly adequate. And I adore the rounded polish on the edge of the outer links.
Speaking as a fan of GS and zaratsu polish... this video is painfully and amusingly true.
I suspect more than a few critics of this video have never owned a GS themselves. Still holding on to mine though, despite the anxiety it causes me ;-)
I think that's fair point. It's a watch so perfect.... you don't want to even USE the watch. I totally get it.
Great, not sure I get you though...
I’ve never seen one…
Good point, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Robin, for watching and for your lengthy comment! A scratched-up GS really is a sad sight to behold whereas my Tudor Pelagos, for instance, almost looks better with every scratch. Still can recommend GS though if you are buying a watch from them as part of a bigger rotation.
Wear it, love it, scratch it, and live with it...consider them experience marks. we all hate the first scratch...but wear it i will.
I’ve been doing just that ever since I created that video. :)
there is a partial solution. put it on a really nice custom made leather. that's what I did for my sbgj237... it actually looks very nice on a strap and it does stand out a lot more if you chose the right color combo. yeah it's not a perfect solution, as you dont protect the watch itself, but just be a bit more careful when swinging your hand you can wear it on a daily basis without much problems. it's a luxury watch tho, dont hike with it...
Cheers.
that sounds like a YOU problem and not a GS problem
the title should be. why you shouldn't buy a watch you can't afford. your point is true for many watch brands, not just grand seiko. i mean, what you owned a $100,000 patek? would you even wear it once? or would it stay in a safe? at this point, there is no reason to own a watch you're afraid to handle.

That’s fine
I would have no problem driving a model S in NYC, or anywhere. I believe in enjoying a watch they can always restore at the 5 year service.

Brilliant... precisely why my daily wear is a Casio G-Shock :)
Good and stress-free choice!
I wear a 10 dollar retro Casio (digital, chrome) and it would kind of ruin my day if it broke. I get it.
Thanks for your empathy ;-)
why is your watch so loose
Simple, it wasn’t sized at the time I made this vid. Thanks for watching!
Teslas have easily the worst paint/finish quality of any major international car manufacturer out there, so I would probably rethink that analogy. It’s embarrassingly bad for what they charge.
So much hate for Tesla in my comment section :D
@@watchesinthewild8276 i'm not averse to still giving them a pass for now; they are a car company in Beta-mode, after all ;-)
Entertaining video!
Subbed!

Highly polished steel case
Just be careful with the sapphire; but it is not too expensive to repolish the bracelet.
That ending tho! 😂😂😂
Nice video btw. 👍👌
Haha... I love that ending too! But I certainly didn’t enjoy seeing it crash in real time. :D Thanks for watching!
I wish the top brands start doing hardened treatment to bracelets and cases like Sinn and Traska offer.
From your mouth to God‘s ear!
It's a double edge sword my friend.
The hardened case = when it finally give in to scratch you won't be able to repolish or refinish it unless you send it back to the manufacturer.
But the scratch on zaratsu polishing can be repolish if you know a good watch polish service.
Sorry for bad English
Haha I love this video. I feel your anger!
Haha... it wasn‘t easy to be angry at GS, but I gave it a try. Thanks for watching!
You obviously can't afford this watch.
Believe it or not, I can even afford to not flip it and make thousands of Swiss francs in the process
If you are afraid of scratches I guess watches aren’t for you. Stick to using your phone.
I’m usually not afraid of scratches and would even claim that they improve the look of my other watches, certainly not the case with my GS though.

(I absolutely LOVE the design of some of their vintage pieces though, for instance the 6146-8020.)
In terms of quality of finish on the dial (polish of hands and indices and other dial details) I have to give it to GS though.
Needless to say, it’s not at all a tragedy if you don‘t get what some would consider the hype around GS. There are many other watch brands which are just as praiseworthy.
