    The rear differential pinion bearings have quite a bit of play in them at 260k hard miles.

    When i was a kid about 50 years ago, fitted a new oil seal in diff pinion and didn't know anything about collapsible spacers and did the nut up with an air wrench, took the car up the road and it made heck of a noise, i overtightened it, car ended up with new differerencial...oh dear...Fred in England.

    I do the same thing when I come across a loose pinion. One of two results will happen: it will work great for years and years or it will loosen up again as the bearing wear out.

    Thanks Ivan, the one I built was the none locker type but the process is almost identical other than the install and the removal of the locker actuator.

    1980 Dodge Colt front wheel drive. Lots of miles, front wheel bearings had slop. Put a dial indicator on it and measured the slop. Divided the amount by 2, used the surface grinder at college to reduce the thickness of the spacer. Drove it a couple more years until the body started falling apart.

    I was researching pinion bearing forces (axial loads vs radial loads) and came across your video. Kudos to you for doing such a nice job of taking up the play and maybe getting many more miles out of it. 260k is already pretty good. ZUK the gear guy 😎

    He's got us beat by 1k miles over our '86 Grand Marquis! Nice!
    Amazing with all that slop, the thing STILL didn't leak a drop! If that was a Ford or Chevy, you'd be rebuilding the rear after it fried itself to a cinder due to lack of lubrication, lol!

    i have bean a mechanic 30 + years have done same adjustment 100's of times with no problems may not be the the proper way but seams to work with out having to spend a lot of money for nothing .keep up the good work

    That filter was rough, but I suppose it did the job. I've seen a few diesel trucks try to turn those filters inside out with less dirt than that. Thanks for the status update at the end.

    I wouldn't count on the bearings not being worn out or even pitted.
    When the Dana M80 diff bearings started whirring & the gears started to get a tad noisy I replaced the bearings & reset the diff lash all by myself, the small pinion bearing had damage done to the inner race & ithe pinion bearings had lost all of their preload.
    As it goes with using unlapped & used gears you might get a bit of a whine like I did at 60 kilometres per hour (40 Miles per hour) but I don't worry about it.
    The solution is to replace the gears as they were a little bit noisy to begin with !

    I use a 50/50 mix of USG dry wall compound mixed with 20/50 castrol synthetic for these old rigs.

    Yes Ivan the practical mechanic has an awesome channel. Another good one is the Hondamobilemechanic. Both excellent channels of course yours is included don’t know if I’ll ever work on a Genie Lol but they have the replace. Stay well Artie 😊 I wonder if thr ring and pinion gears are meshing correctly in the rear ended housing. I do know everything has to be shimmed correctly.     That original K and N never filtered better!!! It probably actually performed better clogged up, meaning it sucks when it's clean.

    Didn't the adjustment on the diff mess up the backlash? Sounded like there was a lot when you rolled it back and forth.

      It really depends on if the bearing are worn excessively. The back last adjustment on these is performed by turning the adjustors on the side bearings. That process is time consuming since the axles shafts and the differential pumpkin has to be removed from the axle housing. The back lash seemed like a bit much but cannot be measure by the pinion movement since when the pinion moves we have to take up all the slop in the rear end. Pinion to ring gear slop, spider gear slop and spider gear to axle shaft spline slop.

    I think you did good that's how I did on my truck and probably put another hundred thousand miles on it since then and it's still doing good no noise oil looks good still, it was a loose like that not making noise or nothing not leaking I just took up the slack in it but mine did not have a crush sleeve in it it had the regular spacer I had to take it apart and I just ground a little bit off of it and tighten it back down and kept doing it till I got it right and reuse the same bearings and the reason I'm watching this right now is because on my BMW I was rebuilding the rear end and could not find one of those Crush sleeves anywhere so I tried to straighten out the old one a little bit and reuse it and I tightened it back down to where I thought was pretty close and I drove it and rechecked now I have metal in it well oil is dark color I don't know if it's just breaking in or what hopefully it's not too tight I do not want to chew the bearings up and I do not have one of those inch pound torque wrenches that they use to check them with so I just felt it by hand

    I would like to see a factory video of how the differentials are set up at the manufacturer, it is a time-consuming project doing a GM rear, wonder how they solve the setup issue at Dana, etc

    Maybe Im wrong but aren't you suppose to wash your K&N and re-oil every you know 3 years or so, Im lost here. That looked like it was never washed, Thats kinda the selling point, wash and reuse.

      Yes but most people don't I think it's pointless unless you actually tune the ECU there hot air intakes and only good if you want more induction noise

      Yup. Wash, let dry and then apply the smallest amount of oil possible to give the filter a hint of red tint. The only problem is most over oil them and then the mass air flow sensor gets an oil bath in the first 100 miles as the filter sheds the extra oil. Lean running codes and low power as a result.

    Actually, the inner races moved towards one another when tightening the nut. Not a fan of using an impact to tighten the pinion nut, it wrecks the roller bearings.

      @@jasperwafflewool1957 There are specially made tools to do just that. Yes, hold the flange from moving and use a ratchet with a long handle. Check clearances frequently to prevent over tightening.

    My uncle 1996 mercury grand marquis gs is making a clunking sound when you put it in reverse and in drive. I thought it was the u joints but they're fine so the guy said it was the differential. The differential have play so can it be rebuild or he have to buy another differential?

    Using an impact wrench to tighten bearings is hammering them . Not good for long life...but at 200k miles...

      I believe the Pinion nut, crush washer, and pinion gear are all supported by bearings, and in service, rotate together. When the impact is hammering on the nut that energy is being transferred to the pinion, hammering it to the ring gear. The ring gear does not move but the high speed , point source impact at the one spot effects the ring and pinion introducing a wear spot. sorry for not being clear

      Interesting to hear you say that, I've seen many professionals use an impact on the pinion. What I hear you saying is that an impact is OK with the ring gear out, when the tech holds the pinion stationary in his palm. I wonder how they do it in the factory. When the diff is already installed, there is no way to hold the pinion stationary with a hand. So there is extra stress on the ring gear/pinion interface. The pinion has some mass, and it doesn't seem to be so difficult to hold the pinion in a palm when taking up the slack with a short burp of the impact. Certainly it is easier than it would be to hold back a drive axle when a vehicle accelerates. Once the slack is taken up, energy goes into crushing the sleeve and resistance of the threads, and some of that resistance reduces the torque needed to hold the other end stationary. Like tightening a bolt, once it tightens down, the wrench at the other end often doesn't need to do a lot. So I would guess the strain on the ring gear teeth is small, but I don't know. The alternative is to use a long cheater bar, which would be really difficult without a lift....

    I would expect even a truck (Toyota for that matter) to need pinion bearings if it has 260k on it. Especially if it's been used for towing or hauling. This isn't entirely out of the ordinary. I've seen much worse on vehicles with fewer miles.

    Interesting that K&N sent a new filter. It looked like the owner NEVER washed and re-oiled it, which you Should do once a year or so. Just saying.

      I changed it a few months prior to this repair at 257k miles when the diff actually rusted through and began seeping oil haha. Drain, weld, and refill :)

      No, actually you use a torque gauge on the pinion flange to watch the torque it takes to move the bearing, once you get to that number you stake the nut in place. That sets the bearing preload, if you go too loose the bearings will make noise and start destroying themselves, go too tight and they will generate a lot of heat and burn themselves up.

      @@Blazer02LS not only that, the more you tighten the nut, the more receccessed the pinion gear becomes. It throws the alignment of the ring gear off as it is set by the pinion position.
      I don't know if half a turn or more after this was set will make a big difference or not. But it will change how the gears contact each other and increase backslash.

      Deez nuts? You tighten the pinion nut until you reach the proper rotational torque for the bearings. Since the bearings are worn, zero lash and zero rotational torque should be fine. Can’t be worse than all the slop ( lash ) that it had.

    Filthy K&N filter. Poor maintenance. Clean it every 15,000 miles. It only takes 30-40 minutes if you dry the filter on a fan.

    front seal bad and front pinion bearing pitted and galled, maybe the rear also from water/salt ingress they'll often still feel pretty smooth and turn ok, but once taken apart, ugly ugly.

    Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics
    If you have play in the pinion bearings, they are already shot. You don't just lose pinion preload unless the bearings are damaged. Even if the nut backed off, you need new bearings and a new collapsible spacer. Where is your beam torque wrench to measure pinion turning preload? This is a hack video, please show people how to do it the right way instead of damaging their vehicles further. Having a customer drive 15K miles on damaged pinion bearings is nothing to brag about.
