    The best thing about this video is, you're helping/teaching a younger tech to do this job.

      Hey Pauly. Sure wish I had someone like myself now, back then to learn from when I was just starting out AND THE INTERNET. LOL

    Thanks for posting this video. It showed me that I don't have all the tools and I don't want tackle this job. I was feeling over ambitious and thinking about just buying the 4.30 gears and replacement bearing to upgrade my tundra from a 4.1 rear differential to a 4.3. It's the last modifications needed to have all the same components as the factory tow package. Its a lot easier to change out the carrier assembly with the differential already installed. Thanks again for posting this video

      Your welcome. Setting up the pinion preload is a pain and without the proper tools, impossible. Yea, you definitely don't want to buy the tools for setup if you are only going to do it once.

    Great to see some videos from yourself again. That young man helping you looked really interested and wanting to get involved, that's really hard to find over here in the uk the apprentices we get never seem interested. Hope he soaks up whatever knowledge you pass on. Hope your settled into your new shop aswell.

      OSHA would be impressed. That work bench was such wobbly, thin metal garbage. I should do a video on the new bench I picked up about a year ago. It's fully welded 7g steel with 1/4" thick legs.

    I have a 07 tundra that's howling. I was wondering how hard it is to tear into and fix. 500 and change for master part kit, vs 1,600 or more to take to a shop. May just buy the axle tool kit you posted the link to and try it myself. I've done motor and tranny changes, replaced wheel bearings, but I've never tore into a differential. Thanks for doing and posting the video, much appreciated!!

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  3 года назад +1

      They are pretty simple to setup with the proper tools. You most likely have a bad pinion bearing. The ring and pinion almost never go bad. I would get just the pinion, carrier bearings & save a bunch of money.
      If you do yourself, you will need to have access to a press to install the bearings, dial indicator to check gear backlash like in the video, large pipe wrenches, cheater bars or something equivalent to set up pinion bearing preload. It takes a bunch of force to crush the sleeve to get the preload adjusted. Oh yea, you will need an inch lb torque wrench to check the rolling preload like in the video. Good luck!

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  4 года назад +2

      Pinion bearings fail all the time on any manufacturer. Its ridiculous how many tools a tech needs these days, that is if you want to be able to do just about anything.

      That I do not know but if all the mounting points, shock hangers, etc. are the same then make sure you check the total width from axle flange to axle flange and the gear ratio. If it is four wheel drive, the gear ratios MUST be the same.

    What tools did you use for the side adjusters?

    • @raincitywrench117
      @raincitywrench117  4 года назад

      I didn't have the special spanner tool so I used a round punch. Mark them or count threads so when you go back together it will be close. I found that leaving the carrier bearing cap bolts a little loose helped to thread in both adjusters then tighten both cap bolts. After caps are tight, use punch on the adjusters to get correct ring gear backlash. It will be tough to get too much carrier bearing preload. I just went by "feel" tried to get the same adjuster tension as when they were removed.
